Today I updated to Firefox 8. It installed, then started to look for add-ons. It never opened beyond this stage.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but while i can see firefox.exe under processes, nothing else happens apart from very high CPU use. I also cannot open in safe mode & there are no reports under "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted" I don't have Roboform or Trusteer.
It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.<br />
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf) and compatibility.ini in the [[Profiles|Firefox profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

After updating to Firefox 9 I have lost all my Bookmarks and Add ons
Firefox updated it's self to version 9.0.1. When I opened Firefox all my bookmarks and add ons where gone.
I have searched the help section with no help.cor-el,
This turned out to be the root cause for my problem. Simply renamed the
places.sqlite.corrupt file to places.sqlite and my profile (including bookmarks) worked again. Thanks!
By the way, I first noticed that something was wrong with my _profile_ when, in addition to lost bookmarks, I noticed that I couldn't create _new_ bookmarks. Also was not able to restore bookmarks from a backup .json file. So I created a new profile, and was able to restore the bookmarks from the original profile's backup. That led me to exploring your suggestion. Thanks again! -

I am using firefox on Windows 7 home premium platform today I updated my firefox to its latest version i.e. 3.6.12 first I uninstall the firefox but keeps my personal setting and then restart my system but when I click on firefox icon nothing happened in fact its exe was running in backend firefox version 3.5 is working fine on my system as I low grade myself to 3.5 again. A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

Okay: My start page is the one Google provides: http://www.google.ca/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official and frequently it has a note underneath the search box that "You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!" But when I check for updates on the About Firefox window, it says my Firefox is up to date. So what is the start page looking for? Is there some setting I need to adjust? Or is this a Google marketing ploy to get me to switch to Chrome?
I tentatively think I have the solution; this is for when the session id value 'thing', in about:config, referred to in other answers is already on the default/rest state.
I am assuming, I don't what to imply certainty in-case there is a value wrong in our browsers, that the problem stems from the fact that our homepage is no longer the default for Firefox.
So, go to 'Options'>'General' and delete the homepage. This will reset it to the new address, which is 'about:home'.

I just updated to FireFox 11 and whenever I start the browser, I get that annoying window that checks for the compatibility of add-ons.
I have looked around for solutions and have tried the following:
1. Deleting several extension files from the profile folder.
2. Going to about:config to disable the extension:checkcompatibility (does not exist there).
None of these worked.Did you try to delete the file prefs.js?

I click the "Tools" tab, then click the "Add-ons" tab. If I then click anywhere on the "Add-ons" dialog box, the dialog box immediately closes. I can't install plug-ins or add-ons. However, this happens only with my account. Other users have no such problem. I have also tried going to the "Add-ons" dialogue box through "Tools" then "Options." I still cannot get into the "Add-ons" tab; the dialog box closes. I have tried using the keyboard instead of the mouse; same problem.

I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID. Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine. -
