Today Security Update 4-07 OS semi stalls

Installed todays security update think it was 4-07
Now i have problems the dock seems to freeze i cannot bring it up, the wallpaper on random change doesnt change, general stuck.
However, i can open applications through finder window.
What is going on, happened twice since i updated!!??
The only other thing i did was change my wallpaper pictures, surely it cannot be that?
Any ideas?
Many thanks

I had this problem too. My solution was:
1. Go to Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility and do a Repair Permissions.
2. Go to Applications / Utilities / Terminal.
3. Do a 'sudo bash' to get a root shell (or just "su" if you know the root password).
4. Type 'shutdown -r now' to get the machine to reboot.
Choosing Shutdown... or Restart.... from the Apple menu got me nowhere....the shutdown -r now was successful at forcing a restart.
The Dock and other icons then worked for me.
Take care!
...Andrew

  • Installed todays security update, computer will not boot, down

I installed todays security update. now my G3 600mhz 14" iBook, running 10.3.9, will not boot.
I have had several symptoms throughout the day. A couple of times it sat there for about an hour with a blank screen. It came up several times with the message to type "mac-boot" ( I may be remembering the syntax wrong) I tried that, I also tried typing "shut-down" at that point.
Later it came up to my background screen bout would do nothing and go no further. Now it is siting there with a OS 9 folder icon in the middle of the screen and sometimes the icon alternates between a face and a question mark in the middle of the icon.

    Robert,
I sympathize with your plight. I had a similar problem with my G4 AGP (Sawtooth). Like a dummy, I installed Security Update 2006-004. Upon reading posts about Apple updates on this board, it seem that the knlowledgeable ones wait until the unsuspecting ones walk on the landmines that Apple builds into the upgrades before trying it themselves.
I had exactly the same problems that you describe. Since I believe that my G4 has an extended warrantee, I called Apple Phone Support. The gentleman after listining to my plight, told me that he could not help me because my Mac was a "VINTAGE" model, no longer supported by Apple. How is that for an answer. I guess that now that Apple switched to Intel, all Motorola chips become "persona non-grata".
Anyway, I remember that something like this happened to me some years back with another "upgrade". I believe that basically, the problem is due to the fact that Apple does not make provisions for third party products installed in a Mac. Last time, it was the video card (ATI) that had to be removed in order for the upgrade to work. This time, I had to remove my 2 GHz. Giga Design CPU and put back the measly 400 MHz. Apple CPU. Then I was able to boot normally. I then re-installed the Giga drivers and everything went back to normal. Since I am getting old, and it is recommended for persons of my age to engage in mental exercises, I believe Apple is trying to help me by having my brain work overtime (not to mention the 5 terror-filled hours I spent to resolve the problem.
I suspect the update writes to or resets your PRAM or other non-volatile memory. Does your G3 iBook have any non-Apple components? If so, I suggest you remove it or them. Beyond that, I cannot help you, except to suggest that you reset the PRAM.
I now have transferred most of my data to a fast, trouble-free (relatively) PC. Since in the future, all Macs with have Intel chips, there will be no reason for me, after about 30+ "vintage" years to buy Apple. Of course, just as Apple touts that its OS can run on a PC, PC owners will (are already) running Mac OS on their PC.

  • DVD SP crashes after I installed todays Security update

Earlier today, I installed the security update, and now I cannot get DVD SP 3 to start up. I've tried reinstalling it, trashing preferences, everything.
This is now an emergency situation. I have a project with a deadline.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually after updates you should fix disk permissions.
In general fixing permissions resolves many subtle issues with the OS.

  • Security Update - Airport won´t work any more

    Hi there,
I just installed todays security update, everthing went fine, but all of a sudden I can´t access the internet anymore via airport. I didn´t change any settings and tried two networks that usually work. Just prior to the update, everything was ok. Now I can´t access the internet, but I can connect to my network and e.g. browse other computers in my network... Internet by ethernet cable works fine. Any suggestions?!

I am having this same problem on my wife's old PB G4 12", however the problem has been intermittent since installing leopard on launch day. I have tracked it down to the leopard firewall which will only allow internet access if I completely turn off the firewall. This is fine when she is at home and behind out home AEBS firewall, but when she ventures out to starbucks having the firewall off is not acceptable. In short, try turning off your firewall and see if you can connect.

  • Security Update for exchange 2013 SP1 (KB3040856) failed mid-way / power problem mailbox server disconnected

While applying todays security update for exchange 2013 (KB3040856) there was a power issue (sad story) and the update was interrupted halfway through.  A bunch of service were left deactivated and I beleive I brought them back.
At this point the exchange admin center brings me to the login and when I do login, I get an enable to display page msg after the login.
I have an ActiveSync error log  "cannot access the mailbox because the mail box server is disconnected"  translated from french.
    I also have ASP.NET 4.0 error "MapiExceptionMdbOffline"
What could be the next step in fixing this if it is at all possible ?  I am not an expert in cmdlet but can manage if pointed in the right direction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I ran update KB3040856, and it disabled all Exchange services, and a few others besides (IIS and filtering). I ran the test-servicehealth cmdlet and eventually got all the services set to automatic and all running.
This is really a stupid thing for an update to do, what is going on? Exchange 2013 is trouble enough already, we really do not need this sort of agro.

I received a pop up regarding security certificates when opening a PDF document today.  Is it safe to say "yes" to the installation of the security updates?

If you opened it with Adobe Reader, then yes: "Yes" is safe (I just did the same thing one minute ago).

  • New Os 10.5 Security update today....but didnt fix my SMB/NAS issue!

Since I am one out of many here in this forum that cnnot connect his NAS harddrive to Leopard, i was looking forward to receive an update from Apple.
Now today there is an update available, which also states it fixes Samba issues....but unfortunately no change on my NAS harddrive. still can connect, see the main folder, but cant drill down and see the files or access files. all works fine on windows (!!) and if i connect the NAS to the Mac straight away.
anybody else still has issues after today's software update?
    Please let me know,
    Thx, Markus

As soon as I read your post, I went checking for software updates and voila, there was the Security Update.
I downloaded and installed it, but no good news. Finder still only shows the topmost shared folders inside the NAS drive, but it doesn't let me browse into them.
I really think there is something wrong with the kernel or with the smbfs support. Are we supposed to get stuck with this problem until Apple finally releases Darwin 9.1? How long will it take?

  • How fix lost dialog box for typing in wanted web site url after installing security update 20110811165603 into Mac OS 10.6 snow leopard today 6.04.2011.

Today, was prompted to install new security update. Did so. Now when click on + to open new tab the words New Tab appear in the tab. But, no dialog boxes appear to type in wanted new URL and no google dialog box appears in the tab area.
Every thing was fine before installed this new security update 20110811165603 into Mac OS 10.6 snow leopard computer.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delayed response - have been away for a few days over the holidays.
I understand your point about backups and disk permissions. I do have a back up copy and will adopt using the 'verify disk' step in future; so, for me the loss shouldn't amount to any more than the time I have spent, as frustrating as that is. However, I think the point I'd like to make is that doing a disk permissions check is fine for those like me [or others on this forum] since I work in a hi-tech industry, and have worked in a Unix/Linux environment for the last ~20 years so understand about permissions etc. , but I know people with Macs for whom the key advantage is that the they largely 'manage themselves' seamlessly. So, if the verify step is simply a pushbutton check-then-repair step and omitting it can lead to such fatal errors, then why can't it be built into the update script as the first automatic step ? What I mean is; my computer reached this unusable state simply by pressing 'ok' on a planned update, so to the average-Joe user it looks like a 'stop and catch fire mode'.
For info: I have now used Disk Warrior, which is reporting a disk malfunction, but can recover the user data. It seems to be a remarkable coincidence though, because there were no system problems exhibited before the update.

  • After today's security update, my macbook pro is failing to boot: error 19

Update 2012-002 on macbook pro. When rebooting, after 'successful' install, I now see a repeating cycle of Error = 19, unable to mount root. From my *nix perspective I fear the worst - that the boot sector (at a minimum) is hosed. I tried  (running Lion 10.7.x) booting with the command key down - no joy. do not currently have my install disk (sadly, it's in storage, somewhere).
I'm concerned about this. this is VERY unusual for an update. This is a relatively new drive (750GB drive installed about 8 months ago). At no point have I seen errors, and believe me, I look.
Assuming the worst case is repartitioning? (ah for hte days of 'fdisk /mbr')

yes. Apologies for being unclear. command--R does nothing but report the same error (note, I have verbose boot enabled).I was an apple tech long ago, I tried myriad key options, just for grins.
Shift key while powering up will bring the expected 'grey' background, with the dark grey apple. After a period of searching, the apple is replaced by the 'no sign'.
an addendum: I believe I know where the issue is, and while I cannot nail it, it's quite likely it is because of a failed filevault2 startup. I went through the process of enabling filevault2, got the key, restarted and when I went to look at the progress of the encryption - it had not 'taken'. I was at the option to enable it again. I didn't think much of that at the time (though I know from working in the past with full drive encryption) that the reboot was invovling a rewrite of the boot sector. However it DID reboot, and more than once. I was able to use the system for a couple of weeks, until today's update. I personally don't feel it had to do with the security update - more it had to do with the failed filevault2 enabling.

  • After running Office 2011 for 1 year with no problem all programmes stopped working today. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now can not even put in registration key. Is it  Security Update 2015-003 problem?

After running Offcie 2011 for 12 months with no problem, today I can not open any of the programs.
Have followed some advice forums but no resolution.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now get the same error when trying to open one of the programs and trying to add activation key.
Updated with Security Update 2015-003 yesterday is this causing the problem?
    Running Yosemite 10.10.2

Me too. It has been 3 days since I have no access to iCloud mail. No matter I check it on iCloud.com, Mac, iPhone or iPad, the mail app says I have incorrect password. Specifially, when I check email on my Mac, the message below appears and prompt me to type in the password. I am sure that I've entered the correct password already.
The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “my user name”
Enter your password again or cancel.
Staying away from email for a day is OK, but definietly not for 3 or 4 days. Someone, please tell me what to do. If it has to do with the servers, Apple, PLEASE FIX IT ASAP!!

  • Today's security update to OS 10.4 has disabled my Mini

Today (6/3/08) I downloaded the recent Security Update for OS 10.4. I am running 10.4.11 on a G4 Mini. The update crashed due to an error said the message and was automatically sent to the trash. I then went on line searching for information using Safari, closed Safari, and moved on to check the recent tremor with Google Earth. Found I could not open Good Earth. Tried opening Safari and then Mail. No app would open. Did a restart but could get only as far as the expanding blue bar. Manually shut down the Mini, started it again, and got the same result. Startup gets as far as filling the blue bar and then nothing happens. Of course, I suspect that the Security Update failure has fouled the OS in some mysterious way. Any ideas? Any suggestions aside from a reinstall?

After scanning 8-10 queries from other Mac users who had tried downloading the recent security update, which ended up corrupting their OS in one way or another, I decided instead of trying to follow some of the arcane suggestions to just reinstall OS X from the original disks. This I did using the Archive Install option, which preserved all my data and settings. Worked like a charm and the computer is now humming along in a well-behaved manner. Of course, I am now back to OS 10.4.0. The only issue now is how much updating am I willing to risk doing. It would be useful if Apple cautioned users that Apple has no way of knowing all of the complex configurations that Mac users have created and thus any presumed valuable upgrade carries the potential of creating new problems.

  • Today's Security Update 2012-001 is POISON to PowerPC/Rosetta apps  on Snow leopard!

First time I've ever had a routine Security Update cause me problems with OS-X, ever.
Today's Security Update 2012-001   is absolutely crashing my PowerPC/Rosetta apps on Snow Leopard .
Every time to try to OPEN... SAVE or Save as ...PRINT  , you will get an instant hard crash.
I still use AppleWorks 6 for all my business correspondence , and have quite a few other PPC apps.
    This security update is poison.
Other forums, such as Macintouch , are reporting this. it seems to be affecting almost everyone , regardless of hardware system.
It appears enything and everything PPC will crash , even Apple's own older PPC/Rosetta apps .
SU 2012-001 for Snow Leopard obviously was not tested well, if at all.
Apple MUST fix this ASAP, no matter how much they want to divorce Rosetta and PPC technology for the OS. There is no excuse for dispatching a system software update that  has such damaging issues.
I have no need for Lion 10.7 whatsoever , but I do need my Rosetta apps every day... and Apple just crashed them.

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

  • Today's Security Update - How Do I Get It?

So I was on MacUpdates and they list a new Security Update for today, but when I try and run Software Update it doesn't show up. Anyone know if it's part of that behemoth 10.5.2 download today?

I have installed every update supplied by Apple, as soon as they were available and have never had any issues with them.
So how would anyone be able to answer that question?
Apparently you and several others have some software or system modification in place causing problems that others(like me) do not.
