ToDos--lavish praise and a little criticism

I love the new ToDo section of Mail. At first I thought it was a very basic application, but now I understand that it can compete fairly with Entourage by the use of Smart Mailboxes. Once I got my head round the terminology--Smart Mailbox is the same thing as an Entourage View--I was up and running. Apple has done a good job with this, but the depths of the module are well hidden. Most new users will not understand and will complain about the lack of filtering (as I did in another thread).
So far, though, I have two major criticisms and I hope Apple will take note:
1) There is no "Start Date" field. This, in itself, is not a big problem for me because I take a fairly simple view of ToDos, or tasks, and don't see them as a full-blown project management system. But the problem arises when data is synchronised with devices using a start date field. In particular I am thinking of Windows Mobile 6 phones/pdas. When a ToDo is created in Apple Mail it's usual to choose a due date. When the item is synchronised with Windows Mobile the due date is reproduced also in the start date field. Subsequent editing of dates causes problems. We need either a start date field in Apple ToDos or a fix to ensure that start dates are not added to the record on synchronisation.
2) The filtering for Smart Mailboxes does not allow (as far as I can see) for ToDo items with no due date. When creating mailboxes, or views, it is a useful catch-all to be able to include those items without due dates alongside other time-based selections.

Hi Michael,
I'm just working myself into it and so far am tempted to second you.
Until then - I am still looking for a way to sort hierarchical, i.e. first after priority, second on due date (and then I'd like those without duedate last ...)
Anybody got an idea how to work that out?
Thankx,
Roox

  • My macbook pro wont get passed the apple icon and the little were wheel below it.  Any suggestions on how I can get this thing to atleast get to the home page or sign in page

This initially started out as me trying to get my battery to work.  my battery was dying after a few minutes so I was trying to kill the battery and recharge it to see if I couldn't get it back to a full charge.  This didn't work but after a day or so I noticed the computer running slow and when I went to start it a couple days later the apple icon page would pop up and the little grey wheel would just whir away below it like it was thinking.  The screen was kinda hard to see.  Since then I have tried several different things to get the computer to fire back up as it should.  I have taken out the battery and left it hoping the internal battery would die and it would reset itself to a default mode.  Didn't work so I then tried taking the battery out and just using the power cord.  This didn't work.  I tried putting the battery out and in while running on the power cord.   this didn't work.  I have tried holding the "alt/option" key and that didn't work.  Although it did give me a different window.  I have tried holding down the "f" keys.  That didn't work.  I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.  That didn't work.  I had to shut it down and restart it holding down the eject key to get the disc back.  I am running out of things I can think of to try so if anyone has any ideas I am open to all of them.
    Thank you,
    Seldovian

I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you did manage to reach the desktop after doing any of the above
my battery was dying after a few minutes so I was trying to kill the battery and recharge it to see if I couldn't get it back to a full charge.

  • My ipod 60gb classic is showing as fully charged until I connect it to my pc when it comes up with the error message, 'please wait very low battery' and the little wheel goes round and nothing happens, can anyone explain why this is and what i can do?

My ipod 60gb classic is showing as fully charged until I connect it to my pc when it comes up with the error message, 'please wait very low battery' and the little wheel goes round and nothing happens, can anyone explain why this is and what i can do?

I have worked my way through the assistant and nothing works. I have tried connecting in disc mode but although the screen on the ipod is showing that the device is charged and that it is in disc mode as soon as I connect it to the computer it comes up with the error message 'please wait very low battery' and stays like that until I disconnect when it appears to be OK again. I have tried on both pc and mac.
BTW the ipod is an ipod video not classic if that makes any difference.
    Thanks

  • To buy or not to buy an entry level 13in MBP? Have a 30in display I would like to connect it to for photo editing and a little video. Any advice?

In the last year the logic board in both my 17in MBP (5yrs old) and Mac Pro (4yrs old) have died.  The local techies have advised due to cost and age that replacing them would not be worth it in the long run.
I am thinking to buy the most basic MBP and connecting it to my 30in cinema display would give me the best of both worlds - a desktop option when at home and a laptop for travelling.  Is this a viable option?  I would be using it for photo editing (photoshop) mainly and a little video editing with Final Cut Pro when connected to the cinema display and a little light internet usage, emails and such when on the go.
My other question is, do all MBP come with airport/wireless capabilities as standard?  (I had to purchase airport separately when I bought the other computers.
    Thanks in advance

The 13" MBP is c**p, it's a consumer MacBook quality in a silver case with a "Pro" sticker, comes with poor integrated graphics that overheat when it even looks at a web video, all shiny screens poor for video. Scores a mere 11 on Cinebench.
Like Sig said, 15" 2.0 (scores 18) or better, 2.2 (scores a decent 30) or better preferred, it has the hefty video card you need to power the external monitor.
also you get a anti-glare option, excellent for avoiding glare and reflections in portable uses.
also you may need the quad core i7 for processing video faster, dual cores are toast.
    17" high res has true 1920 x 1080 (1080i) with it's 1920 x 1200 pixel screen, I've got one. Sweet.
Sad to hear you have been having such a bad run with Mac's, it used to be they lasted 5-7 years or longer easy.

  • I dont get sound for videos, games and music but ringtone still works. When i press volume buttons on side of phone i only get the picture of the nell and no little dots underneath. This is on my iphone 4s and ipad. It happened at the same time.

Recurring theme with the 4s losing alerts except for the phone ringing.  Most complaints seem to center on the 7.1 upgrade.  The fix is dodgy, putting in a charger, playing a you tube video then pulling out the charger and wiggling it until you get the sound back.  When you get the sound back, the volume buttons start to work again.  Alternate solutions involve cleaning the docking port with a toothbrush, running a pick over the electrodes etc.

  • HT3964 I am not able to reboot my Mac desktop. When I switch on the Mac, I get a white screen with the Apple logo and the little wheel below that goes round and round but the computer refuses to boot.

We need to get you moved. This forum is for mini-tower Macs built between 1998 and 2005 and doesn;t get as much traffic ("eyeballs on the problem") as the forums for newer Macs.
Please do "About this Mac" from you Apple menu and tell us what that says for "processor" and Mac OS version. Looks like this:
or this for later Mac OS versions:
With that we can figure out which of the two iMac forums you need and get the Hosts to move your post.

  • My photos won't "load" - it has worked fine for at least two years, but suddenly now when I plug in the chip, iPhoto opens up as usual, but the window just says "loading photos",  and the little wheel keeps on spinning - can anyone help me?? I am new here

my photos won't "load" - it has worked fine for at least two years, but suddenly now when I plug in the chip, iPhoto opens up as usual, but the window just says "loading photos",  and the little wheel keeps on spinning - can anyone help me?? I am new here. I need to get it working again because we're about to go on a trip!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • When I run multiple Microsoft powerpoint files at a time on my MacBook Air, it simply gets hotter and generates little noise (most probably fan noise). Will this make any effect on life span of MBAir??

When I run multiple Microsoft powerpoint files at a time on my MacBook Air, it simply gets hotter and generates little noise (most probably fan noise). Will this make any effect on life span of MBAir??

    Theoretically, yes.
Heat, and heat cycling certainly do take a toll on even solid state components. I have several "very old" Macintosh computers, and the logic boards exhibit the effects.
The fan too, running at higher speeds, does eventually cause wear. More than anything, the higher airflow leads to a higher propensity for dust accumulation on the fan, and the heat exchangers.
In practical terms though, maybe not so much. If you plan on having your computer exhibit a reasonable useful life before you retire it or upgrade, you may never experience any of the detrimental effects. I rarely use a computer longer than 3 years, before I sell, give it away, or just stop using it.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Your computer is well designed to give you a long life, even in the manner in which you describe. Take care of it, but use it for what you bought it for. Nothing you mention is in any way, abuse.

  • Todo for ical and iphone

I use the to do list with ical and it works fine, but it doesn't sync with my iphone.
Can anyone recommend an easy to do package that integrates with ical to do and can be synced and updated on my iphone??
    Thanks in advance.
    M

I don't think there is a way to this. I wish apple would make the todo list available and syncable with the iphone. How do we get apple to do this. It is such a pain not having this feature. The other thing that I use is quickcal as a way of putting info into ical. Its a bit buggy though unfortunately. Be great if apple made a good widget version of this that worked well.
Sorry I can't be of more help

  • I've recently spilt a little bit of water on my Macbook Pro 13" and some of it went into the keyboard, the first thing I did was get paper towels and dry it off, everything is except now the speakers sound different, and a little bit lower in volume

I've recently spilt a little bit of water on my Macbook Pro 13" and some of it went into the keyboard, the first thing I did was get paper towels and dry it off, everything is except now the speakers sound different, and a little bit lower in volume, basically the speakers just sound weird, there's no word to describe it, I can't really hear any bass from my speakers

Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

Not sure if it uses data, but that allows you to multitask.  To save battery life you should close out of all the apps.
