Toggling between voices in Text-to-speech

Hi!
I'm using my MPB to study both languages English and French and every time I want to change from the English default voice in text to speech change it to french i have to go to system preferences to change it
is there an eaisier way (likea menue button that toggles between the two voices: tha English one and the french one)

Which voice are you using? Here's a response from that page from Dr. Allen:
"This is because the codes are for the Loquendo voices, not the Neo-Speech voices. I don't believe that the NeoSpeech voices use these codes. You might search forums & the blog to see if there are similar triggers for Kate & Paul."

Ios 5 possible firmware bug for iPhone 4; Voice command/text-to-speech doesn't work properly.

I upgraded an AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 to the ios 5 firmware, and I am having the same exact issues for both phones. When using the voice command a few times, the audio voice does not come through the "speaker" (referring to the speaker located at the bottom of the phone). Instead, the audio voice goes through the receiver which is on the front face of the phone, on the right of the camera.
For example, say you want to use the voice command to dial a phone number. You would enable voice command by depressing and holding down the "Home" button and give the command "dial...1-800-452-3456", the phone would then repeat the phone number back to you through the "speaker". However, when I did this a few times, the voice instantly goes to the receiver instead. I found no way to fix this problem. I tried the following and none of these solutions worked:
Turned the phone off and back on again
Hard reset (held down the Home and Lock button for 10 seconds)
Restored the phone, and set the phone up as a "new iPhone" instead of restoring from back up
After trying to restore both iPhones and still have the same issue, I made an appointment to visit Apple. I took the Verizon iPhone 4 to Apple, and the employees handed over a refurbished iphone in hopes to solve this issue. However, this refurbished phone still had the same exact issue.

Of course I checked my apps library and found nothing. However I'm looking at the status while sync is processing, I'm 100% sure that app is not synced to my iTunes library
Yep, I can always manually "transfer purchases" to my iTunes library. But this is not the point. On my old iPhone 4 and new iPad (3rd gen), it will sync all newly installed apps from my iOS devices to my iTunes library, no need to click "Transfer Purchases" again.

Tweaking Text to Speech

I wish to create more time (i.e. dead air) between paragraphs when Text to Speech is turned on and in use. How do I do it?
I've tried spaces, paragraph returns, & punctuation, nothing slows the voice. (There have been some amusing moments.)
If there is one beat between sentences, can I create two beats between paragraphs?

Can not get Text-to-Speech to work

I can not get Text-to-Speech to work. In "Settings", I can go into "Voice input & output", then to "Voice Output; Text-to-speech settings" and then to "Install voice data; Install the voice data required for speech synthesis" but it is "grayed out". I have downloaded Pico TTS several times and I have soft-reset and hard-reset the device several times. Still no text-to-speech
Any thoughts on what I can do to get text to speech to work?

Did you activate InCar in Vlingo? I just checked this and it works for me. Once you activate InCar, you should hear "Vlingo InCar".
If Vlingo InCar doesn't work for you, have you considered getting another Bluetooth headset that has the ability to read texts to you, like the Blueant Q2?

System Preferences crash (on text-to-speech settings)

Every time I try to change text-to-speech settings under System Preferences, it crashes.
I was trying to change it because I was experiencing crashing in Skype, and Skype recommended I change the default voice for text-to-speech.
All my data on this MacBook Pro came from my old MacBook Pro via a Time Machine restore. Not sure if this info is helpful or not!

Text-To-Speech-Simulation?

You probably all know the effect of synthetic voices by text-to-speech systems. (You can find several online in the internet). Did anybody simulate this with Logic 9, done from a "real speaker's" voice. I tried Ringshifter, EVOC 20 Filterbank, EVOC 20 Trackoscillator. It all sounds more as vocoder and/or pitch transposes. Is there a specialist?

This would be difficult to simulate. You would need to start with the speaker trying to talk like a computer sounds (make a recording of actual computer speech reading the text, to practice imitating), record some takes, then do some Autotuning to make the voice recording sound a bit more mechanical. Flex Time could also be used to make the timing of words and syllables "quantized".
Would it be applicable for you to just use the Mac's Speech function to read your text, "speak" it (there are lots of computer voices to choose from)", record the output, then use Flex Time to adjust the timing of words and syllables as needed for your project.

That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm

How do I install the text to speech voices in Captivate 7 trial

I am on day 2 of the 30-day trial. I downloaded the voice zip files, but can't seem to get them recognized/installed in the trial version. How do I do this?

Hi there,
If you have downloaded the voices for Captivate 7, then it has downloaded the zipped file for Text to speech installer.
You need to extract that zipped file to a folder first, then inside that folder there is setup.exe file, double click on setup.exe to start the installation. (Captivate should be closed while installing voices)
Note: The set up of text to speech are different for Captivate 7 32 bit and Captivate 7 64 bit, so make sure that you have downloaded the appropriate one.

CP 5 text to speech--purchased voices integrated directly?

I am hoping someone from Adobe will answer this question definitively for me (or someone who has figured this out and tested it). Let's say I have to add text-to-speech to a software demo and provide the demo in, say, five different languages. I have English, French, and German available to me in CP5. But I also need Spanish and Japanese. So I purchase the Spanish and Japanese voices from another TTS vendor (pick a vendor, it shouldn't matter, right?). QUESTION: will the purchased Spanish and Japanese voices be available directly in Captivate just like the voices that came with Captivate?

Using third-party voices for speech text
You can purchase voices from third-party vendors and use them seamlessly in Adobe Captivate.
Note: Ensure that these voice comply with your operating system’s speech APIs.
Install the voices on your computers using the installers provided by the vendors. The new installed voices get listed in the Speech Agent list of the Audio > Speech Management dialog box.

Use Chromium OS text-to-speech voices with Chromium browser

...and he's at it again!
TL;DR chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts-git - all TTS voices from Chromium OS for use with Chromium desktop browser. Install as unpacked extension (no more auto-install, sorry, damn you Google!)
So you've heard about the text-to-speech capabilities of Chromium OS, and you would like to use them with your desktop browser?
Perhaps you have dyslexia, a visual disability, or just a desire to learn a new language, have Web pages read out to you, or you simply want to show off your digital-fu to your friends?
Then you may have noticed that the Chrome web store does have plenty speech synthesizers from third parties, but in most countries, the one from Google usually shows up with just one voice (US English).
For those who don't (want to) speak English, are bi-/multilingual, or who just are more open-minded with regards to the world's languages, here's my way to help make this happen: chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts-git on the AUR.
This extension packages the TTS engine and all the voices available from the Chromium OS project...as a Chromium extension.
To install it:
Download the taurball, build and install the package
In Chromium, browse to chrome://extensions
Enable Developer mode by ticking the box
Click the button named "Install unpacked extension..."
Navigate to /usr/share/chromium/extensions/chromium-ext-chromiumos-tts
Click on Open
That's it, you should now have a new extension named "Chromium OS Text-to-speech (by Google)" enabled and ready to use.
Note: Before rushing off to try out some HTML5 / TTS demos out there on the Web, please realize that not all of them work well (or at all), since text-to-speech on the Web is quite new and still in development.
The easiest way to get a quick glimpse (or rather soundbite) of what this thing can do, is to install the ChromeVox extension from the Google web store. After installation, click on its Options link, scroll down to Voices, and try out the different languages from the listbox.
Suggestions, questions, etc. are very welcome.

To make it clear, this is not ripped, reverse-engineered, "warez" or anything like that. It uses publicly available material from the Chromium OS project, and modifies only BSD-licensed source files.

Does Leopard's text to speech offer any new or more understandable voices?

I haven't moved up to Leopard yet. I have read that Leopard is suppose to offer some improvements in the text to speech voices, however I can't find any information from Apple about these changes.

Exactly so. With any purchase you get Heather (US English). The US English pack includes Laura, Ryan, Kenny, Nelly, Jane, and John, giving 7 voices for $99, or $14 apiece. Cepstral voices are $30 each.
British English gives you Heather, of course, along with Graham, Lucy, Peter and Roger. 5 voices for $99, or $20 apiece.

OK, so one does get more voices with Infovox. However, after listening to the American English voices, I would probably only use Heather, Laura, and Ryan.
Just curious, how are using the other language voices for speaking English? Sounds like the would be fun to occasionally break the monotony of hearing the same voices all the time. I wish either had a good Aussie accented voice.

How can i import abbreviations in text to speech without using voice over?

Hi, I have recently discoverd text to speech on my macbook, and I like what it can do. I would like to edit the way it pronounces some abbreviations. I discovered this was possible with voiceover. I would like to do this even when voice over is turned off so I can highlight a text i want to read on a pdf and it would read everything as I want it to. Maybe there is a third party app that makes this possible?(This could come in handy when I want something to use it for biology books where there are a lot of abbreviations used, like ADP/ATP/NHDAP/...)

You can load your data automatically in the Multisim word generator. Follow these steps:
- Save your data file (in excel .xslx ir .csv format) on your computer
- Change the extension of the file to ".dp"
- Double-click the word generator in Multisim and click on Set...
- In the Settings dialog box, click on Load and then Accept
- This will prompt you to select the .dp file you have on your computer, select it and you're good to go
However, in Multisim you have the option of creating your own custom simulation analysis and instrument.
I will try creating the instrument and send it back to you but it might take some time.
Multisim and LabVIEW are very powerful in test automation, with the custom instruments you create for Multisim you don't need to export your data file into excel from LabVIEW (or MathCAD or other tools) and then reload it into Multisim. The test procedure is automated instead.
