Told not to Shut off background apps ios 8

During a recent visit to the Apple Store for a warranty, I was told by the employee that I should not be shutting down manually any background apps running. The proper way was to restart my phone periodically and the operating system would take care of the rest. Is there any truth to this I can't see that it's working that way at all.

Apps stay on the list forever (until you clear them), but that does not mean they remain in RAM, and they are not "running in the background." iOS DOES autoclear memory, but not the list. If iOS runs out of the 1 GB of RAM it will delete the least recently used apps to make room for newer ones. If apps do not save data to their database when suspended the data will be lost. Safari does not save open pages, for example, so if it is flushed from memory the cached pages will go away. This is true of many other apps also. So the fact that an app appears on the screen does not mean that it is occupying memory. In addition, apps can expand and contract in size while they are running; when they expand iOS gives them more memory that may not be adjacent to the existing code. Eventually apps get spread over many small segments and leave many "free" segments scattered around. If a new app is loaded and there isn't enough memory for its initial load iOS will move the existing apps around to create a larger single segment to hold the new app (this process is called "garbage collection" and has been a part of all Unix-based operating systems [which includes Windows] for almost 40 years). This results in a launch delay for the app, and can also slow down the keyboard.
The Quick Launch (AKA multitasking) screen has nothing to do with background apps. There can be apps running in background that are not in Quick Launch, and most apps in Quick Launch do not have background processes.
iOS moves apps to the front for your convenience; their position has nothing to do with their priority or where they are in memory. When you double-press HOME while running an app the first app displayed will always be the one you had used just prior to the one you are currently using, then the one before that, down the line.

What is a memory alert and how do I shut down background apps?

It's when the internal memory doesn't have enough space to operate apps or the phone.  You should do two things.
    1)  Double-tap your Home button.  You should see a row of apps at the bottom of the screen.  Tap on one and hold down until it wiggles.  Hit the red x in the upper right of the icon.  Do this for all icons.  Don't worry - you're not deleting the Apps, you're just shutting them down from multitasking
    2)  Do a hard reset of your iPhone.  Hold down the Home button and Sleep button.  Keep both held down until you see an Apple logo.
    This should clear the memory.
    Good luck!

The machine could be repaired by a company that does circuit board re-soldering, since it is possible a heat-flex solder break on the main board may have caused either the processor or graphics chips to lose connection and that could manifest itself in a few somewhat documented ways.
There is an on-board RAM chip that may also have something to do with a kernel panic, if it no longer is functioning correctly; that is the non-removable one soldered on the board you never usually worry about.
Companies such as powerbookmedic, wegenermedia, and others can take in portable macs of vintage or newer (contact them for details on what they do, and how they accept work orders) for repair and can fix most anything; and have a parts inventory. Modern repair workstations allow the equipped service company to fix complex issues and they do troubleshooting. Sometimes the cost is less than a replacement logic board.
The links above may help isolate the general cause of a kernel panic. There are other articles in Support database including a deeper look into them.

Usually the issue is caused by hardware, especially if there is an indication of machine failure in the crash log or other screen image text.
A working last model MacBook (mid-2010) would be a better 'first mac' to have.
Hopefully you can sort it out.
If not, there likely are fair parts in it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do you shut off the apps that are running? Before the update you hit the button twice then it would showing all the apps and u can then shut them off.

How do you shut off the apps? Before update I just hit the side button twice then it would show all the apps. Then I would shut them off.

    View running apps.
Double-click the Home button to reveal the multitasking display. Swipe left
or right to see more. To switch to another app, tap it.
    Quit an app.
If an app isn’t working properly, you can force it to quit. Drag the app up from the
multitasking display. Then try opening the app again

  • My ipad will not completely shut off.  If I try to power down, it reboots on its own.

When I hold the sleep button down to power off my ipad, I get the red slide that confirms that I want to power down.  I slide it like I always have, but once it shuts down, it immediately reboots.  I can't get it to shut off completely.

when you slide the slider, as it is shutting down, the little revolving circle spins.  It is not rebooting, just doing an orderly shutdown.  Make sure you let go of the sleep button when you slide the slider, or it will turn back on.

  • I shut off in app purchases but when I try to get one it still comes on and I don't want it to

I shut off the in app purchases because my grand children uses my ipod sometimes and I don't want them to download an in app purchase.  I just upgrade my ipod and when I try to get an in app purchase it lets me.  How can I keep it from letting me.

Have you checked to ensure that that restriction is still set? Settings>General>Resrictions

  • When I'm on an app sometimes my ipod shuts off the app and brings me back to the home screen. Whats wrong with it?

It only happens on some apps but sometimes it will shut off and bring me to the home screen i think its happened while im using safari on my ipod to.

It can happen from time to time, especially with third-party apps, though shouldn't happen too often with the ones created by Apple, such as Safari. Turning your iPod completely off and then on again can sometimes help.

  • HT4993 phone is not working, shut off

i phone shut off, screen blank. will not turn back on

Connect iPhone to Wall Charger for 10 minutes, it may turn ON itself. If still nothing, keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until the iPhone begins to start.

  • Ipad 2 shuts off randomly after iOS 7 update done

I have seen a youtube clip of this happening in the beta form.  I've never used a beta because you do so with the expectation there will be potential bugs.  But I just loaded the final version today and it just shuts itself off.  Especially seems to do this when you go into the photo gallery.  Is there an answer?  it will just shut itself off and restart.  My 4S doesn't seem to have this problem when I updated it today as well.
I suppose now that this final version is out, there is no way to revert my iPad 2 back to iOS 6?? I keep reading on the net that you can apparently do this if you had 7 beta, but am guessing it's not possible with the actual release version that came out today?  My iPad 2 is now pretty much useless.  Any possible solutions?  How can this happen if it's been shown to exist in the beta version a few months ago?

  • Was told not to report off transaction planning cubes

    Hello there,
we recently implemented Hyperion Planning and have 3 Essbase cubes: Planning, Capex, and workforce. We want to hook OBIEE up to the cubes for reporting. We have been told it is not best practice to report off the same cubes we're transacting in. How should we go about building reporting cubes? Is it as simple as "backing up" or copying our transactional cubes?

It is always better to restrict the planning application for the planning operations and providing the reqd reporting applications for the reporting purposes.
This will avoid the unnecessary conflict b/w the planning and reporting cycles.
In the planning 11.1.1.2 there is inbuilt feature of mapping the planning cubes for the reporting application(ASO applications).
Under covers it works like this
It extract the required set of data from the planning cube by genaratiing and executing calc script into a text file.
After that it will format the data file to map the reporting cube and dimensionality and load into the reporting cube.
Insteade of using this in built feature we can provide the better automated customi interface for our application with three regularly used components
    1. data export calc script
    2. Rule file to map the exported file with the reporting cube.
    3. MaxL file.
If you are using the same dimension structure for the reporting cube as of planning cube except hsp_rates and currency dimensions.
You can try this as well.
    1. creating bso-aso replicated partition(suppoerted in essbase 11)
    2. replicate data
    3. drop replicate data

OK.  Using it turns it off.
I just setup two Z10s fresh out of the box today, and within ten minutes of use on both, it's gone.
    That turns it off.

  • IPod will not charge, shuts off after three seconds

Pretty much what it says up there. When plugged in, the screen comes on for about five seconds, then the device turns back off. I REALLY want to avoid a DFU restore, because I didn't back up my apps. Any way to get it to turn on?

I am afraid you will not be able to get your iPod Touch to turn back on. My iPod Touch did the same thing yesterday, and it would not turn on. Your only option (as far as I know) is to hold the home button while plugging your ipod into the computer. Then you will be able to go into iTunes and restore your iPod.

  • Health app not reading from any other apps. iOS 8.1

Using iPhone 6+ and iOS 8.1. I use MapMyRun, MyFitnessPal and Lark. Lark pulls activity from phone when I walk around with it in my pocket but I'm not going to run with the thing. I run with a Garmin Forerunner, log my workouts on MapMyRun and they show up fine on my iPhone app version but they don't push to the Health app. I have Health's source settings all "on" and allowing read and write permissions but there isn't any reading or writing happening. What gives?

Hi Try a Reboot press and hold power button and menu button hold both down until you see Apple  Logo Also Sign out of itunes then Sign back in not Apps Store. Cheers Brian
