Told to ReStart (?)

I was working in Safari and all of a sudden the screen showed what looked like a grey curtain was drawn from top to bottom. In the center was a message that said "you need to restart your Mac. press the power button and then press again to turn back on".
I've never seen this before. I did as told and am back in OSX 10.6.7 and everything seems OK so far.
I have rebuilt directory with Disk Warrior several times and still am getting strange activity on my computer.
Any help appreciated.
Bruce

I hope this is the correct report.

  • Have had the descending shadow on my iMac and been told to restart but not sure why, any clues would be helpful thanks

Had a warning siren tonight on iMac, restarted, seemed ok until a shadowy curtain crept down my screen and I was told to restart again, and again. No clue as to why this has happened, any help would be gratefully received.

every time i try to download updates i get an error and told to restart my macbook pro. why? what to do?

This is a rare error, so excuse me if I ask some basic questions:
    1. Do you update your Apple software through the Software Update pulldown menu? If not, I'd suggest doing that.
    2. Do you perform diagnostics? If not, you can perform a Permissions check by going to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and running it.
    3. Do you perform other diagnostics? Download Onyx to your Mac, and perform a full diagnostic on your machine. You'll need to reboot.
    4. Have you tried to download updates individually from Apple? Not the perfect solution, but there's a good chance it will work.
    5. Have you used Terminal? If you go to Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type "sudo softwareupdate --install --all", and enter. Software Update should work.
    6. If all fails, consult help at your Apple Store, if there's one nearby.

  • Screen goes gray; told to restart?

Called a kernel panic. Something caused the operating system to have an irrecuperable error.
In the 3 or 4 I've had since I started using MacOS X in the year 2000, I always restart with the Install DVD, run Disk Repair and carry out a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions, prior to restarting the Mac proper and see if it will run without further issues. When the kernel panicked, data structures in the hard drive may have been left in an inconsistent state, which hopefully Disk Utility will be able to fix.
Beside waiting for one of the gurus to show up and try to diagnose the messages, it can also help to know exactly what you were doing and what apps were in use in the last few instants before the panic.

  • When I try to install download helper I am told to restart firefox. I do, and go back to the same "restart firefox" message.

I have tried to install "download helper" as a Firefox add-on. I hit the install button, but then get a box telling me to restart firefox. I do, but end up at the same page with the same "restart firefox" message everytime I try to install "download helper."

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

What to do?  Can't turn on at all. Logo, folder icon, and circle w slash appear. Nothing else.

Thanks for the reply...  i tried, but nothing was able to work.  Took to Genius Bar this morning, they said the Hard Drive was the problem, couldn't be repaired

  • I started to update my macbook pro and was told i needed to restart, which i did. that  was about 6 hours ago and all i see is an apple and a rotating circle. what do i do?

! started to update my system and was told to restart. I did. it has now been about 6 hours and all i see is an apple and a rotating circle. what is happening?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc  if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
    Thanks in advance

You are likely forgetting a step.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
    Click Restart

  • Javascript development on Apex - How to show changes on the Javascript on Apex without restarting the web server?

      Hi,
I am working on a Javascript for Apex. The changes are not reflected and I was told to restart the app server. Is there a better way for Apex to process the changed Javascript? Thanks.

    Hi,
I assume you store JavaScript to web server folder and browser caches your file.
Use query string end of file name like
    /my.js?v=0.0.1
And when you change file, change query string value
    Templates JavaScript help says:
File reference using a query string in the URL referencing the application version, such that when the application is upgraded
(and the version is incremented), the browser will be instructed to always load the new file and ignore any previously cached files.
    /myjs/main.js?version=#APP_VERSION#

  • Feezing after Restart or Shut Down commands

Perhaps this is a common problem, as I have seen it happen before, but I have a Mac G5 in my lab that, after being told to restart, or shut down, the icons disappear like normal, but it just sits there with the desktop background up. No shut down, no restart.
I can restart manually by holding down the power button, but this machine is the master image for the lab and has to be able to shut down by timer, due to our college's "green" policies. If it won;t shut down on it's own, and has to be done manually, it defeats the purpose.
I've already resatrted from the CD and ran Disk Utility to repair and verify permissions. It did find errors, and said it fixed them, but after restarting from the hard drive again, it is still freezing after given the shut down or restart commands. The cursor still moves and the desktop background are there, just no icons or dock.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi-
The power functions of the machine are controlled by the PMU/SMU.
A reset may be what is needed.

  • Leopard won't install on G5 iMac - nothing happens after restart

I put in the Leopard DVD into my first generation G5 iMac. A Leopard window opens and asks allows me to click on "Install Leopard." I double click and it tells me Leopard wants to restart my computer and has me type in the computer password. I do. The computer restarts and the gray screen comes up with the gray Apple logo/icon in the center of the screen. Nothing happens. The fans start to come on. It's stuck. Tried this 3 times. I have never had an install fail this way. I have to wonder if Leopard is ready for prime time.

I called Apple, in India I think. After going through my serial number (hold the computer upside down in your lap and use a magnifying glass to read the serial number, holding the phone in the other hand) I was asked the most inane questions like "Where did you buy the iMac." I don't remember and had to say "What does it matter where I bought it? I don't remember. Can we please get to the question I called about... this Leopard software I just bought from your company?" So, we got into the problem. Anyway, I was told to restart the iMac with the C down on the keyboard. I am using a wireless keyboard and suspected it wouldn't help... I thought the bluetooth software wouldn't work until the computer had booted... but lo and behold, the "spinning gear" soon appeared and, after that, the rest of the normal Leopard installation. It's going on now. Fingers crossed.

  • Why doesn't restarting FF4 remove extensions

I want to remove an extension. So I open the Add-on manager and click remove. I'm told to restart firefox to remove them. I restart and what do you know they are still there. Can some one please tell me how I can forcibly remove them?

This can be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.
Extensions that are installed by other programs (Java, RealPlayer) need to be removed from the settings in those programs.

  • Computer requires restart evry time ipod connected

Have a 20 gig Ipod that is about 3 yrs old. Everytime I connect the computer dims and I am told to restart. When I restart with the Ipod still plugged in and log in, the computer dims and tells me to restart. Anyone have this problem and if so, any ideas on a fix??
    Thx

My computer needed to restart every time as well, and I connected it to another computer and showed up fine. So from there, I restored the ipod on that computer, and now it works fine on my computer. So hopefully that will work for you too.

  • MacBook Won't Start Up!!  Please Help!

    Hi all,
I have a Aluminium MacBook which I purchased online at Apple, I have had the MacBook about 2 months, all was working ok until last night when I went to start it and it wouldn't get past the grey Apple screen...
This morning I tried it, it did boot up but took AGESSSSSS I do have AppleCare but wanted to see if I could do anything before calling them?
Feel really dissapointed, especially as I have a old Emac which I've never had any grief with grrrrrr...
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, but simple terms only, I have VERY limited knowledge
    Thanks in advance,
    Amy

    Hi all,
Right, I've not got any further with my problem, after seeking advice on here I went home rung AppleCare who suggested what you guys did and with the install dvd in the machine I went into Disk Utilitys and 'repaired disk' It completed successfully and said 'The Macintosh HD appears to be ok'
So I was told to restart, which again took about 20 mins booting from the dvd. So I was then advised to 'erase disk' which I did.
I was then told I would need to reinstall Mac OSX again from the dvd which I did but got a message reading something like 'checking dvd for consistancy' There was a 'skip' option but I thought I'd let it go through it's motions which painfully took about an hour. Then clicked 'install' only for it some moments later saying 'install failed'
    I got the following message:
*The installer could not make the computer start up from the volume 'Untitled' you may need to select your disk using the startup Disk Utility. Restart to try installing again.*
That's as far as I got, as I'm not confident enough to try anything else without getting advice on here or calling AppleCare but by this time had closed. They said its either a software or hardware problem and that was part of the elimination process, so I'm guessing this looks like a hardware issue would I be right in thinking that?
If so, where do I stand with getting the MacBook replaced as its under 2 months old...
    Please advise, I'm clueless here
    Thanks in advance
    Amy

  • Can not close company code in asset accounting for prior year in ECC 6.0

    Hi,
I have problem with closing one company code in particular for 2007.  I have run through the basic steps, however when I run AJAB.  I am told to restart the posting run.  I restarted the asset posting run ASKB and depreciation rub AFAB.  Both finished without error.  Again AJAB gives me the same message afterwards.  I confirmed with my security team that I have access to close the company code.  I ran a trace on the AJAB transaction for company 7600 and received the following:
All these errors repeated about 200 times.
    I_ANLN1 incremented to about 215.
