Tolerance Setting for OSX Window Scroll Behavior?!

I would really love to see if there is a way to solve a problem that I have been having since moving to the mac just under two years ago.
Is there a way to /change/ the tolerance amount for getting a window such as those in Aperture to scroll upward or downward? I am pretty sure I have the same problem in Finder but - I am basically getting carpal tunnel over here trying to hit the "sweet spot" on this action. It seems to me this area is about 1/8" in depth and if I am not exactly in the right spot the window will not scroll. So I end up gripping my mouse tighter and tighter (since I may also be really bummed if I lose my 4 minute multiple selection that I am trying to move...) and I keep moving the mouse until I get the window to bump just a little.
Then I sit there with my hand gripping the mouse, trying to bury it into my desk as I try and get the window to move a little /faster/ - all while sitting there patiently waiting for the scroll window to get where I need to go.
I know some are going to suggest the multiple list view in Finder to keep from doing this but I just don't find there is enough info in this window to be useful to me. Also, something like iPhoto of Aperture doesn't have this list AFAIK and Aperture is what is really making me uncomfortable with this one.

i have posted a screenshot of the kind of behavior i am seeing which is rather inconvenient since the area that gets it to scroll is like 1/8" tall and then there is /another/ area where you can move the mouse about 1/32" and get it to scroll faster. this is in aperture but the behavior seems pretty similar (though a bit more tolerant) in Finder:

Virus protection for osx - windows user

Hello
I am a mac user working in a predominantly windows based office, i use my personal macbook in the office quite alot but often need to transfer files from various windows machines to my laptop. The lab has recently had some problems with viruses, while i am aware that these are very unlikely to pose a risk to my system i would like to know that i was not passing them around via flash drives etc. So my question is this, can anyone recommend a good (preferably free if its decent) antivirus for osx?

It's impossible for them to pose a risk to your system. There are no Mac viruses, those will all be Windows viruses, so unless you're also running Windows, you have nothing to worry about. (If you are running Windows on your Mac, note that you should still have Windows antivirus software installed there.)

How can I make triple partition for OSX, Windows 8, and for saving Data

I read many articles on googles yet I still can't figure out how to.
The point that I get is when you're installing Windows using bootcamp, before it actually try to install windows, i have to go back to OSX, choose disk utility and create the 3rd partition.
But after I continue the installation, the windows boot camp partition can't be formatted and worse I can't use the drive to install windows 8.
Other I read about deleting the recovery partition in order to make it works?
I don't know .... I tried and I failed many times *sigh*

1. Boot Camp doesn't support Windows 8, so wait until Apple releases new Boot Camp drivers.
2. Boot Camp requires only one volume on the hard drive, so you can't create a volume to store data

Zebra setting for viewer window?

For some reason I am suddenly getting zebra warnings in my viewer window.
(little black lines around hot spots in the image)
I never had this before- not sure why I have them now- but I don't.
How do I shut this off?

Where are the default icon set for OSX located?

Hi all. im new to osx and mac (like 2 weeks in) and really like it so far.
I really like the folder icons with the stamped icon on them, like the downloads folder with the stamped down arrow, and the applications folder with the stamped A.
Ive created a folder for my Work files which i'd like to add a custom icon too. i know how to change the icon, but id like to see what other 'stamped folder' icons are available in the osx iconset so i can change it to one of those for consistency sake.
Anyone know how?

The commands baltwo gave you will show all hidden files, as will TinkerTool, which you REALLY don't want to do! There is an enormous amount of visual clutter that will appear.
A new command appeared in Leopard, I think, which made it possible to easily change the hidden bit for any file or folder, without need of the specialized commands from Developer tools. IF the hidden bit is the only problem this will fix it:
sudo chflags nohidden /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle
Just copy the above and paste into the command prompt in Terminal, press Return, then type your admin password (it isn't echoed to the monitor in any way, so type carefully) and press Return again. The CoreTypes.bundle should then reappear.

Lanovo ix4 300d and european character set for samba shares

Hi,
I am installing a couple of IX4-300d at a client site, struggling to set and fix the samba character set for the Windows shares. Here in Italy everyone is used to put western european characters into filenames (for example è ò ° €) but the NAS acts wierdly when it finds such caracters in folder names and file names.
As you know samba gives the possibility to declare dos charset= ISO8859-1 and unix charset= ISO8859-1 in the smb.conf file but the option is not present in the IX4 setup pages.
Is there an easy way to circumvent the problem and fix this option? As it is now the machine is fearly useless, at least if you need to migrate files and folder from a server or storage with ISO8859 charset already applied.

This issue has been raised on all iomega drives since day 1. although 'documented' it is still shame, that units sold to 'r-o-w' means rest-of-world, outside US, are stuckto Aa-Zz09 basically wheras client systems ( windows, linux, ios ) don't care and take what they are supposed to do.
Take it or leave it. ( I mean, take another vendor), I do not believe someone ever has taken that seriously or will do it......
Various PCs / Laptops ( sorry I still really love Dell and Fujitsu ;-))
Supporting Customers ix2s and ix4s -- Love Networking ( not only technically ).

Mac Pro - Separate HD for OSX and Windows?

Hello Mac Pro users - maybe some of you can help...
Are going to buy a Mac Pro soon - which will be used for graphic artwork and Windows games. Today I have a Mac and a PC - for the same purpose - and now I want to build the Mac Pro with a harddisk for OSX - and another harddisk for Windows (XP or Vista). Is it possible to have 2 separate HD's (or more) with each systems using the standard setup by Bootcamp - or do I have to make a partition on the OSX HD and then install Windows there?
I'm asking this pro forum because I can't get a clear answer here in Denmark where I live - a Apple supplier first said it was impossible - then 2 days later, that it was possible, but they will charge me for 2 hours of support - and in another forum some have told me it was easy - but have given me no help how to do it - and again some have told me to use some software called "rEFIt".
So is it possible - and hard to do?

The only thing you need to be wary of is that the
Boot Camp Assistant will not wrok from a Mac OS X
installation that is on a RAID set. As long as you
boot mac OS X from a single drive then it's really
easy.
I had a setup for awhile of two drives in RAID-0 for my Startup drive, a backup single drive, and a separate 300GB drive just for Windows.
In Windows the "Startup" drive in Control Panel would not show the RAID-0 Startup volume, but I could startup from it by hitting Option when it rebooted.

System Preferences → Exposé & Spaces → Exposé
I can’t set shortcut for „Application windows” — first column with Fn key is OK, but the second column with mouse button doesn’t work. If I set „secondary mouse button” for „application windows”, it doesn’t work. But if I set „secondary mouse button” to „All windows”, it works! All mouse shortcuts for „All windows” or „Show desktop” work, but no mouse shortcut for „Application windows” work . The same with „Mouse button 3” and other buttons.

Do you see the iTunes Library icon in the window? Click on it and the use the scroll bar to get to the tracks you want.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I have it set up, in "Tools", "Options", etc., for my windows and tabs to reopen & be restored to the webpages that they were previously at before I, for one reason or another, restarted my computer! But, after I restart my computer and the Firefox browser, it always goes to my homepage; the windows & tabs NEVER restart as they should!
It wasn't always like this. It has only been within the last few weeks that this has become a constant and consistent problem. I assume that a Firefox update somehow disabled something & that's why it isn't working properly but, whatever...
How do I fix this so that my windows & tabs reopen as they should!?

Have you checked to make sure that under>> Options >> General >> That the startup behavior is appropriately? I had the same problem after upgrading and setting my homepage. It should be set to "show my windows and tabs from last time".

Background: I have a menu and when I click on one of the options a window opens but I hate the fact that I can enlarge it...wish it would be fixed sized and have scroll instead... :P

First you should be searching the forums to see if you questions has been asked and answered before. (Very few questions posted in the forums are original). It makes sense to search the forum where the questions should have been posted in the first place.
For example, if you had searched the Swing forum using "fixed size jframe" you would have found this posting at the top of the search results:

Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 patch set for windows - questions

I have for that some questions. I have oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on a windows 2003 server running with one local database - no real apllication cluster.
I don't understand which instructions I have to make for oracle upgrade?
Must I also make the 3. instruction? Connect to databse prior and drop?
Must I also make the post install action for my database?
(startup migrate ...)
what means at post install actions the following:
'execute these post install actions only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $oracle_homee.
My database path is e:\oracle\oradata\database my oracle path is e:\oracle\ora92 have I in my case make the post install actions?

1. When applying this patchset on Windows NT, XP or Windows 2000, you must log onto the system as a user with Administrative privileges
(e.g. as a user which is a member of the local Administrators group).
2. Unzip the downloaded patch set file into a new directory.
3. Drop the xmlconcat function by running the following commands:
drop public synonym xmlconcat;
drop function xmlconcat;
4. Shut down any existing Oracle Server instances in the ORACLE_HOME to be patched with normal or immediate priority. i.e.: Shutdown all instances (cleanly). Stop the database services, and stop all listener, agent and other Oracle processes running in or against the ORACLE_HOME to be installed into.
5. Perform the following pre-install steps for Real Application Clusters (RAC) enviroments only:
IN ADDITION TO STOPPING ALL ORACLE SERVICES IN THE ORACLE_HOME TO BE UPGRADED:
If you are running in a RAC enviroment, stop the following Windows service(s)/devices(s) using the Net Stop command:
Stop the Windows service named "OracleGSDService"
Stop the Windows service named "OracleCMService9i".
Stop the Windows device named "OraFenceService" (This Device does NOT show up as a Service in the Control Panel).
For Example:
C:\>net stop OracleGSDService
C:\>net stop OracleCMService9i
C:\>net stop OraFenceService
Once the above steps have been performed on all the nodes of the cluster, you should then be able to upgrade the OSD components to the 9.2.0.3 versions. This can be accomplished by...
xcopy all the files in the \Disk1\preinstall_rac\osd\*.* directory to the directory in which the OSD components were originally installed on all nodes(typically %SystemRoot%\system32\osd9i).
Note: You may also be able to look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle\OSD9i registry key to determine the directory in which the original OSD components were installed. Now the OSD components can be restarted on all the nodes in the cluster.

C:\>net start OracleGSDService
After all of the above steps have been completed on all the nodes of the cluster, you are now ready to proceed with the Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 patchset installation.
6. Start the installer:
If the current Installer version is less than 2.2.0.18.0 then download the Installer 2.2.0.18.0 from Oracle Metalink where it can be accessed with the bug number 2878462 and choosing the MS Windows NT/2000 Server platform, then run the setup.exe 2.2.0.18.0 from the C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install directory .
7. You may install the Patch Set through either an interactive or a silent installation.
To perform an interactive installation using the Oracle Universal Installer graphical interface:
1. Start the installer from the newly installed OUI 2.2.0.18.0 by running the version of setup.exe located at C:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install and verify
that the version of the OUI GUI is 2.2.0.18.0 before proceeding.
2. Follow the steps given below within the installer:
1. On the Welcome screen, click the Next button. This will display the File Locations screen.
2. Click the Browse button for the Source... entry field and navigate to the stage directory where you unpacked
the Patch Set tar file.
3. Select the products.jar file. Click the Next button
The products file will be read and the installer will load the product definitions.
The products to be loaded will be displayed (verify ORACLE_HOME setting for this first).
4. Verify the products listed and then click on the Install button.
5. Once the installation has completed successfully, it will display End of Installation. Click on Exit and confirm
to exit the installer.
To perform a silent installation requiring no user intervention:
1. Copy the response file template provided in the response directory where you unpacked the Patch
Set tar file.
2. Edit the values for all fields labeled as "<Value Required>" according to the comments and examples
in the template.
3. From the unzipped patchset installation area, start the installer by running the setup executable passing
as the last argument the full path of the response file template you have edited locally with your own
value of ORACLE_HOME and FROM_LOCATION:
setup.exe -silent -responseFile <full_path_to_your_response_file>
Post Install Actions
Execute these "Post Install Actions" only if you have one or more databases associated to the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME.
Important Notes
1: Java VM and XML DB Requirements
Users who have JVM (Java enabled) or JVM and XDB installed on their 9.2.0.1 databases should make sure that the init.ora parameters shared_pool_size and java_pool_size are each 150 MB or more before running the catpatch.sql upgrade script. Failure to do so could result in an unrecoverable memory failure during running of the script. Please note that JVM and XML DB was shipped as part of the default 9.2.0.1 seed database and will be present unless the user explicitly installed a 9.2.0.1 instance without them.
2: SYSTEM table space
If you have JServer installed in the database, you should check to be sure there is at least 10M of free space in the SYSTEM table space before running these actions.
3: Installing on Cluster Databases
If you are applying this patch set to a cluster database, then set the CLUSTER_DATABASE initialization parameter to false. After the post-install actions are completed, you must set this initialization parameter back to true.
To complete the installation of this patch set, you need to start up each database associated with the upgraded $ORACLE_HOME, start the database listener (e.g., lsnrctl start), login using SQL*Plus (e.g., sqlplus "/ as sysdba"), and run the following commands/scripts in order from $ORACLE_HOME within a MIGRATE session. If you are using the OLAP option, make sure that the database listener is up.

Review the patch.log file for errors and re-run the catpatch script after correcting any problems

How can I set-up my mac mini server to be a central file server for my windows boxes (they don't see the mac on the network), and how do I set-up a central iTunes server so that all my devices sync to the mac mini?

I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared. You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access. The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.

Then select Other
Then select "Add a Mail Account and click create
Then go to google for the settings you need:

These are instructions for Mail 4.0 but all of the necessary settings should be listed.

Setting Cursor - For a window and application wide

Hi,
Can somebody please help with a cursor problem ? I am not able to set the busy cursor for a frame when the application is doing some work. I have tried many methods of doing this (some of them from these forums...) but still I am not able to make this work.
1) setting the cursor before doing the work and resetting after the
work doesnt work.
2) setting the cursor for the window by calling
Window window = SwingUtilities.windowForComponent(getRootPane().getGlassPane());
window.setCursor(Cursor.getPredefinedCursor(Cursor.WAIT_CURSOR));
This works but the events are not blocked by the frame i.e if i
click on any part of the window like a button or something, that
event is fired after the work is done. So this is not good.
3) created a glass pane for the window and blocked all the events. Then
set the cursor for the the glass pane. This does not work either
since the event thread is doing the work. So had to create another
thread to do the work. This works but when the cursor is reset back,
it doesnt reset. I have to move the mouse a bit to reset it. So this
is not good either.
4) created a work around for the cursor by creating a modal dialog box
saying "Processing..." in the event thread and doing the work in the
worker thread. The worker thread posts an event to dispose the
dialog box after the work is done. This works perfectly though it is
still not good because the cursor is not showing busy. Because of
the modal dialog box, the user cant do anything in the application
which is exactly what i want. Is this ok ? Can somebody provide any
other work around for this ?
5) Also I have another question for you guys. In the worker thread if i
do something like updating the gui etc., it takes a lot of time
almost 10 times more than when the work is done in a single threaded
environment. Is this because of the communication between the worker
thread and the event thread ? If I do only data related work not gui
work in the worker thread, this is fine.
I am new to Swing, so somebody please explain to me if they can.
My environment is JDK 1.1.7, Swing 1.1 on Sun Solaris 2.5.1. Is this because I am using old versions. Is this resolved in the newer versions like 1.3 etc ?

That is all true. The problem is the need to give a user the ability to run a program that has secrets that should only be visible by root. If you give the user ownership, they cab see the keys to the kingdom.
For example, you may want to allow a user to connect to an arbitrary wireless access point. Generally, this is a privileged operation -- you want to give them permission to do it, but don't want to give them ownership. You may also not want them to be able to see or modify the pass phrases.

In addition to Niel's comments, if you plan to use Time Machine to backup a Mac to the secondary drive.....that application needs a drive that has been specifically formattted for Mac. That would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
PCs can also read and write to the Mac formatted drive.
