Tomcat Connection Pooling

I am using Tomcat connection pooling (DBCP) to get the connection from the Database
It really works great with Oracle, MySQL, Sybase and as well as DB2.
Recently I tried to integrate apache with tomcat to improve the performance.
But now the problem is I am unable to load the JDBC Driver its giving me an error message as Cannot load JDBC driver class ?null?
@ org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource.createDataSource ..
Interseting thing is I am able to get connection through datasource(DBCP) if I use the following URL
http://localhost:8080/application _name/Hello.jsp
But I get the error message when I try to get connection through datasource(DBCP)
as Cannot load JDBC driver class ?null? for this URL
http://localhost/application_name/Hello.jsp
Both the URL use same server.xml, httpd.conf,servlet class and jsp pages
Gurus can you please help me to understand why my application is unable to get the connection when I use this URL http://localhost/application_name/Hello.jsp
But not with other one

Yes I am doing context lookup like this
Context ctx = (Context) new InitialContext().lookup("java:comp/env");
conn = ((DataSource) ctx.lookup("jdbc/test")).getConnection();
This works with Tomcat but I am unable to make it work after
integrating tomcat with apache

    How did you make Tomcat connection pooling(DBCP) working with Oracle?
    I refereced to the "JNDI Datasource HOW-TO" in Jakarta Tomcat. I am using Tomcat 4.18. I can get DataSource object, but when to get connection from dataSource, not any response, It seems freezing.

    I have configured the datasource with connection pool as per

    All the required jar fles are in $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib.
    When I run my app,I am getting the following error even though commons-pool.jar file is there which contains GenericObjectPool.class file
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.commons.pool.impl.GenericObjectPool: method <init>()V not found
    at org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource.createDataSource(BasicDataSource.java:652)
    at org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource.getConnection(BasicDataSource.java:403)
    Did anyone run into similar issue?

    I am trying to connect to a MS SQL database using Tomcat/JSP but having issues. The code that I am using is as follows:

    I think this is purely an issue with how I configured server.xml and web.xml
    In the Tomcat documentation it states to put the code in the server.xml - but nested inside the Context element. This is something that I have not done as I am clear what the Context should be..
    Can someone assist...

    you should put the code you typed in server.xml into context.xml
    in the META-INF folder and this will fix your problem.
    the latest tomcat docs detail what to do.

    You mean INSIDE the webapp, using the Admin Console (tomcat docs should be helpful in that case)... Where are you supposed to search for the info?

  • Serious connection pool problem on Tomcat

    Hi,
    We are deploying our JSF creator-made app onto Tomcat 1.5. We set up our JNDI datasource on Tomcat (using the i-net driver ).
    Initially the pages load ok but after a short period of time we are getting these errors:
    Initialization Failure: javax.faces.FacesException: org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot get a connection, pool exhaustedWe believe that somehow the Creator-generated code is NOT freeing up connections in the connection pool.
    We think that when the afterRenderResponse() methods in the beans call rowset.close() this is NOT returning the connections to the pool. Can someone, hopefully a Sun Engineer confirm that the rowset.close() code in afterRenderResponse() returns the connection behind the rowset to the connection pool.
    Could this be a driver issue? We are using the i-net driver not the DataDirect one, but this should implement the full API.
    This is a very serious problem for us.

    I am using the DBCP connection pooling in tomcat server version 6.0.18.
    I have session table which maintains the session details of the user in BLOB column. Recently I am facing a problem. When a user logs in, I am storing the session details in the DB. It throws an exception like this. When I restart the tomcat, it just works fine. But after some days it is again throwing the same exception.

    What version of Tomcat do you have? 4? 5? 5.5?
    Have you defined a Resource entry in server.xml as well as the ResourceParams?
    I have never had any luck configuring a datasource in the server.xml file.
    What HAS worked for me is putting the config into a myWebApp.xml file.
    My web context is "myWebApp"
    The name of the file is "myWebApp.xml"
    For Tomcat4 for this goes in the webapps directory
    For Tomcat5 this goes in the [TOMCAT_HOME]/conf/Catalina/localhost directory

  • Has anyone run the connection pooling for mysql & tomcat successfully?

    I'm trying to set up connection pooling. I'm following the how-to page at
    http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
    But when i test the DBTest/test.jsp file, tomcat displays an error =
    could not load jdbc driver class 'null'(msdos)
    i have placed all the required .jar files in the tomcat lib.

    Hi Karthikeyan,
    This is not the issue at all. I can open the management studio by the same login id and password and also i can make the database jdbc connection from plain java file.
    It does not give me any problem by them.
    I'm unable to find the actual problem. May be i'm missing something in connection pooling.

    password - Database password to be passed to our JDBC driver.
    url - Connection URL to be passed to our JDBC driver. (For backwards compatibility, the property driverName is also recognized.)
    user - Database username to be passed to our JDBC driver.
    validationQuery - SQL query that can be used by the pool to validate connections before they are returned to the application. If specified, this query MUST be an SQL SELECT statement that returns at least one row.
    how to configure server.xml file

    please help me...this module is very very urgen to me..

    I spent many hours when i first implemented connection pooling trying to put it together. The information is scattered and the config has changed slightly from 5.0 to 5.5 etc. This is how I got it working in 5.5.17:
    * server.xml seems to be a wrong place for the pool configuration if you consider it to be an application specific thing. It might be a better idea to put it into C:\tomcat55\conf\Catalina\localhost\ConfigFileForYourWeapp.xml as follows:

  • Tomcat 5.0.* global JNDI database connect pooling. complex config question

    Ok. I can't get global connection pooling to work in tomcat 5.0.24. (I am running windows xp pro)
    I am using MySQL (installed on the same machine) and I have succesfully worked through the tutorial titled "MySQL DBCP Example" found at http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
    This example does not demonstrate global connection pooling, however. I want to share a single connection pool across all my web applications. I don't want a different connection pool for each webapp.
    So I define the connection pool JDBC resource in the conf/server.xml file under the <GlobalNamingResources> element.

    I was not able to get it working exactly according to the tutorial, though. I was required to put the <context> element not in the conf/server.xml but in conf/Catalina/localhost/DBTest.xml. Then, with the DBTest/WEB-INF/web.xml as above, I was able to get the DBTest example working. The output of test.jsp (described above also) is the following:

If I remove the <Resource> and <ResourceParams> elements from the webapp-specific <context> element and put them in the <GlobalNamingResource> element in the conf/server.xml file I should have a global resource, right? I did this, then added a resource link to the <context> element (see above), however, the example stops working. I have tried both with and without the <resource-ref> element in web.xml.
    Can some remarkably intelligent and knowledgeable person please explain to me how global resources work in tomcat 5.0, especially global JDBC connection pooling.
