Tomtom iPhone app external gps receiver help!

I use my iPhone tomtom app while traveling around Europe and there are a lot of places where gps is low is very low in Europe. Last time I went I lost gps signal and got lost and needed someone else to help me on the road.  I was wondering if I could get some suggestions of external GPS receivers that will boost my gps signal so I always have gps everywhere. I also want to turn data off as soon as I enter Europe so I don't get charged for data being used by tomtom. So if I could get some good suggestions of external GPS receivers that will work with iPhone 5 and iPad mini would be great. Thanks in advance.

Nope. I have the same as you but no issues.
I have TomTom's Western Europe nav app on my iPhone and the TomTom car kit, but when I used it the GPS seemed jumpy, as in it kept wandering onto neighbouring roads and then randomly... I've done a restore of the phone and it uses the latest software versions....
So I downloaded the TomTom Car Kit app which allows you to see the GPS status of the mount and even after 30 mins outside with a clear view of the sky not a single satellite was detected by the mount.
Well you've done a what's necessary. I would delete the TomTom app and redownload it. If that fails I would assume that the mount is MIA and try to get it swapped.

  • Can I use an external GPS Receiver via Bluetooth?

Great phone.  I used a Galaxy Nexus for over a year until I got this phone, but once I started using the Z10, I never looked back.  The "Hub" is a GREAT feature, exactly what I use most of the time.  Oddly enough, I was never much of a BB fan until the Z10.
Anyhow, I have bought several apps and accessories for the Z10.  I rely on my Z10 a lot.
I still have (from my old Windows Mobile 6 phone days back several years ago) a perfectly working external GPS receiver that has Bluetooth (Holux GPSlim236).  Great little receiver.
Since I often use my Z10 for GPS nagigation (I am using Mireo DON"T PANIC) for directions whilst riding my motorcycle all day long, with Bluetooth enabled to my helmet, having the GPS radio on as well as Mobile (aka phone) and Bluetooth does drain the battery faster than if I could avoid using the internal GPS at this time (I still want to use the internal GPS at other times).  I do have a data plan, so I could use the internal maps, however, I often ride through places with no data access (back country).
I was able to pair the Bluetooth GPS Receiver to the Z10 (easy enough), however, there is no option in the "Network Connections" settings area to be able to disable the internal GPS radio, or anywhere else, so I can't tell for sure that this is working (that is, not using internal GPS but using external GPS).  I suspect it is not using the external GPS Receiver, though, since Bluetooth settings indicate "no services" for the external Bluetooth device.
Is there a way to sometimes use the external Bluetooth Receiver on the Z10 (in order to save battery on long trips)?
It is also not just for battery power savings, but also when I ride there is no air conditioning, so the phone does get hot, and I suspect would be cooler if I used an external GPS receiver via already-enabled-anyways Bluetooth.
    Thanks

I am not sure my original message was clear.
I have th Z10, it has GPS software and a built-in GPS radio receiver.  I also have an external GPS radio receiver, not a GPS device.  It is strictly a radio receiver.  I used to use it years ago on my Windows Mobile device - the software with maps was on Windows Mobile, and the GPS receiver hooked up via Bluetooth.
The GPS receiver in the Z10 uses the Z10 battery.  I have the Bluetooth on anyhow to connect to my helmet headset.  Since Bluetooth is on already, I could save Z10 battery by using the external GPS radio receiver (disable the internal GPS radio receiver), thought the map software would still run on the Z10.
So, the previous response says "does have GPS profile" but also says "external GPS will not work:".
I am not sure the statement was respect to my setup.
What I really need is for the Z10 Bluetooth to see the external GPS receiver, perhaps as a serial  device or as a GPS device, howsoever such things work, and for the GPS map software to use the external rather than try to use the internal (the map software should not really care, it should be the OS that virtualises the GPS port).

  • How do I get my iPad2 to use an external GPS receiver

I have a Marine Navionics Chart app on my iPad. I have bought an external Blue Tooth GPS receiver. The iPad has recognised the device. I wish to use this to improve the accuracy of my location when at sea. When I have "Location Services" off my iPad does not seem to want to use the external receiver (a GNS 1000 device).
How can I get it to use this device?

Make sure to select your recever in Audio Out options, under Sound in System Preferences. If you cannot see your receiver listed, than it is most likely ana adapter issue.

  • N95 8GB with external GPS receiver

Not being too happy with the internal receiver on my N95 I bought and external one (HBTGPSOL BT Solar GPS Bluetooth GPS Receiver by Hamletcom.com).
It is very easy to connect by bluetooth but I cannot figure how to switch the phone from using the internal receiver to the bluetooth one.
    Any ideas ???

You will get a meassage asking you whether or not you want to activate bluetooth everytime you run Maps. If you say yes, it goes to bluetooth if you say no it goes to the internal GPS receiver.
There is no real need to disable the others.

  • External GPS receiver with TomTom app

I have the Dual XGPS Bluetooth receiver for my wi-fi iPad2. It works with a couple of the cheap map apps I was testing it with. I then downloaded the $50 TomTom app, and I can't get it to work. Always get the Weak GPS Reception response.
Anyone else with this receiver get TomTom to work?

Yes, I did send an email to Dual & posted a question on TomTom, but usually get better & faster answers on Apple discussion.

  • Issues between iPhone and external GPS bluetooth

I have paired my Garmin GPS bluetooth with my 3G iPhone. Seemed to work fine. I could call and talk through the GPS speaker-mic.
However, realized today that when receiving a call, 1) the GPS ring, and I answer by clicking the answer button on the GPS. However, I do not hear the caller. Only way was to press the speaker ON the iPhone and talk handsfree through the iPhone !!
Also realized I can use the car speakers when iPhone iis connected through car AUX, and simply use the iPhone mic.
Cool, BUT : we're talking about driving safe here... What am I missing so there could be a simple way to make or answer calls without having to play around with both iPhone or GPS or disconnecting the AUX cable, whenever a call is coming ??
Unless (and I hope) I am missing something, I am getting to conclude that iPhone was not designed with mobile-slash-driving security in mind.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Well, I use a bluetooth headset with my iPhone when I drive. I have familiar people set with different ringtones, so when the phone rings, I know without looking who it is. All I do then is press the button on my headset and talk. Press it again to hang up. If it is my default ringtone, then I just look down at the phone for a second to see who it is and decide whether or not to answer it.
As far as your other statement about having to perform checks everytime a call comes in, I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to, unless it is my statement about checking the phone. I would recommend that you test that while in the driveway of you home before venturing out on the road. It may be a limitation on that particular version of Garmin. I know not all of them work 100% with the iPhones.
I agree about searching for a song on the iPod as being dangerous. If you cannot find a handsfree solution, then I wouldn't use the phone except for when you are stopped. I agree it isn't worth a fine or worse!

  • Can anybody suggest iPhone app for GPS route backtracking

I travel in African bush and would like to know if there is an iPhone GPS application which can plot my route in an unmapped terrain and guide me back on the same route.
It does not help to get a direction to the start point as there are bad patches of sand, river beds and dense bush.
My old hand held GPS did it, but sadly is now beyond repair.
    Thanks.

No.  Commercial GPS (signal degraded relative to military use) can't be that accurate. The device would have to see > 10 satellites at the same time to get anywhere near that. iPhones do most of location using WiFi and cell tower.

  • Tungsten E2 + SPECTEC SDG 812 BT GPS Receiver= Help!

Trying to get the SPECTEC SDG 812 to communicate with my E2 via Bluetooth.  Note that the 812 is not an SDIO device.  I can get to the screen where the passkey is entered, but after that no GPS data is received.  Tried with both cotoGPS and SoarPilot.  Any ideas?  I have tried all possible baud rates and settings, and even several variations of the passkey in case the product documentation is wrong.
Note that I can only initiate communication with the 812 by removing it and inserting it in the slot while the E2 is doing bluetooth discovery.  If the 812 is already in the slot when discovery starts it won't communicate at all.
Very close to sending the SPECTEC device back for refund, but hoping that maybe someone here can help....
    thanks

    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Thanks Dash, I am moving closer to a solution. I now know the following essential things:
    - the Palm must have Conklin System's CS SDrv software installed to keep the power on for the SD port.
    - the Spectec SDG GPS unit must have a mini-SD card inserted in it's slot in order for the CS SDrv software to work. Without a recognized card the Palm turns off power to the slot.
    - the Palm doesn't work reliably with SD cards over 128 Mb and, wouldn't you know, I don't think there ARE any mini-SD cards that are this small. I got a 2 Gb card which the Palm recognized. I thought I'd fix was wasn't broke by reformatting the card before I did anything and that corrupted the card: Palm can reformat a card that large. Now the card's broke and I CAN'T fix it! ... older but wiser.
What kind of card do you have in the SDG unit? Have you tried to put any data on this card? Apparently you might have problems if its a large format card and you try to write to it.
I have confirmed that with my now corrupted card I can still get the Palm to supply power to the GPS for about 8 seconds, and in that time I can confirm that it's recognized and connecting via Bluetooth. I don't have enough time to get a GPS fix, but I assume if I can keep the power on it will work.
I think that my problems will be solved if I can put a recognized SD card in the slot. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?
Thanks for your help. Too bad these old units, using BETTER screens than the new units, are not better supported. Oh well.

  • Iphone App not Opening, Please Help!

I keep trying to open the game app "what's the phrase". It will start to launch and act like it's going to open, but then the screen goes black and it goes back to my home page. This seemed to start happening after I downloaded the update for that particular app a few days ago. I've tried downloading a random app from the app store, as suggested in other forums but that did not work! Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated!

minimise the app then double tap home button , then hold finger on the icons that appear along the bottom of the screen until they wiggle, then swipe to where the icon is for the app that is giving you trouble an dtap on th eminus sign then tap once on home button.  Then open app again and see if it works

  • Iphone app development... GPS, UIWebView, and Cookies???

    Hi guys!
I'm a total Newbie to macs, iphones and anything apple. I just got my iphone yesterday
Anyway, I really want to create an iphone app that views a website through the "UIWebView". (I'm sure you can do this)
Then, i want to somehow read the gps location of the device (GPS satellites only - if not avilable, a message will be shown) (I'm not sure if you can do this, i've seen gps info apps in the app store, so im guess its possible)
Then the bit im im not sure about... Would it then be possible to take the data from the gps, and save it with NSHTTPCookieStorage "setCookie", which im hoping would be accessible from the UIWebView with a javascript read cookie function (document.cookie)
Does any of this seem possible? Really hoping the last bit to pass the gps via a cookie to the javascript in the UIWebView. Or maybe if cookies cannot work, is it possible to post the gps from the app to a server side mysql database, and then read it via ajax in the UIWebView.
If this looks possible im going to buy a mac mini and really have a go at making a iphone app
Thanks for the help (and thanks for reading my long post!)
    Regards.

    Hi,
my Location Sender application does what you want: http://appshopper.com/navigation/location-sender. I am sending the location via HTTP GET method.

I don't have a paid Mobile Me account, but I understand I can set up a free account to use the app. I signed up for the free MobileMe account in the iPhone 4's settings, and signed into it using my Apple ID. It seemed to work except that, when I went to sign into the app, I got an alert saying that my MobileMe account had not yet been verified, and I should check my Mobile Me email. The problem is, I can't seem to get the the mail screen. When I go to the Mobile Me sign-in page and enter my Apple ID, all I get is an alert saying that no device has been registered. Can anyone provide any help with this? Thanks very much for your help.
