TomTom iPhone mount, external GPS and Navigation

I have TomTom's Western Europe nav app on my iPhone and the TomTom car kit, but when I used it the GPS seemed jumpy, as in it kept wandering onto neighbouring roads and then randomly... I've done a restore of the phone and it uses the latest software versions....
So I downloaded the TomTom Car Kit app which allows you to see the GPS status of the mount and even after 30 mins outside with a clear view of the sky not a single satellite was detected by the mount.
Anyone else seen this problem?
TIA
Tob

Nope. I have the same as you but no issues.

Well you've done a what's necessary. I would delete the TomTom app and redownload it. If that fails I would assume that the mount is MIA and try to get it swapped.

  • Tomtom iPhone app external gps receiver help!

I use my iPhone tomtom app while traveling around Europe and there are a lot of places where gps is low is very low in Europe. Last time I went I lost gps signal and got lost and needed someone else to help me on the road.  I was wondering if I could get some suggestions of external GPS receivers that will boost my gps signal so I always have gps everywhere. I also want to turn data off as soon as I enter Europe so I don't get charged for data being used by tomtom. So if I could get some good suggestions of external GPS receivers that will work with iPhone 5 and iPad mini would be great. Thanks in advance.

  • Single User Mode - mount external drive and make it r/w

How can I access a USB disk and make it read/write?
I can't +mount -uw /Volumes/"Time Machine Backups"+ because it says that the disk is a special type.
Can I just use chmod because the disk is automounted?
When I attempt to chmod my USB disk, I get this message:
chmod: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups: Read-only file system
    chmod: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/.autodiskmounted: Read-only file system
I know that I can cp from the internal disk, since I can cat the pictures to the terminal. But I can't make the external hard disk writeable.
I need to do this from single user mode, because the machine won't boot from the DVD.
    -Michael

Just got back from the apple store. The genius found these things:
    * My DVD is fine. It loaded in another computer
    * My computer is mostly fine, except for the hard disk. It was able to boot off of an external Firewire disk.
    * The DVD drive is fine. When the computer was booted off the external disk, it was able to mount my DVD.
    * The internal HD is definitely bad. Drag/drop copy to an external HD was going to take 3 hours for about 30 files. Disk Utility shows it in red.
    * He suspects that the failing HD prevented the machine from being able to load a DVD. (?)
    His advice:
1 Buy a new 2.5" SATA disk at Frys.
2 Buy a USB sled for the old disk
3 Replace the failing HD in the laptop with the new, unformatted disk
4 Boot from the OS X DVD
5 Install the OS from the DVD
6 Reboot from the internal HD
7 Insert the failing HD in the sled, and connect it to the computer once it's booted off the new HD. Copy everything from the /users directory
8 But a new HD for the sled and use it for Time Machine backups
9 Teach the daughter the importance of regular backups
    Let's hope this works.

  • IPhone 4.0 GPS and camera

    Hi,
I have two questions about the iPhone 4.0. I would like to get input from users.
    1 - GPS
I read that the iPhone 4.0 has the same GPS chip than the iPad. Is it a stand alone GPS? I mean... if I have no phone data link and no Wi-Fi, can I still use the GPS? Or is it like older models where it uses triangulation with the 3G?
    2 - Camera
Ok, there is a flash on the iPhone 4.0 for photography. My question is the following: can you change the aperture or shutter speed with the built-in application for taking photos or a third-party app?
    Thanks.

    Yes, really.
The iPhone includes a dedicated GPS receiver - always has, and also uses A-GPS or assisted GPS. The assisted part via cell tower location or wi-fi helps to speed up the initial GPS acquisition only.
When you use a GPS system and you turn it on, it needs to find orbit and clock data for the relevant satellites, this in turn results in what is called TTFF, or Time To First Fix—how long before you get your location pinpointed. This initial TTFF is often called a “cold start” and on SiRF III systems (the latest GPS systems available), it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to acquire a signal. That time is dependent on your location, amount of interference and horizon information: open fields are faster than canyons or urban environments where buildings can interfere with the satellite-receiver line of site.
But when you use assisted GPS this whole process is much faster. Very often cellular network towers have GPS receivers (or a base station nearby) and those receivers are constantly pulling down satellite information and computing the data. This data is then passed on to the cellular phone (when requested) and acts like a “cheat” since the relevant satellites to your location are already identified and all that GPS computations is handled by 3rd party computers.
Maps data is not stored locally with the Maps app included with the iPhone. An internet connection is required to download the maps data for a particular location. If you don't have cellular service, the GPS radio will work but the initial acquisition will take longer and unless you are using a GPS app with maps data stored locally on the iPhone, you won't have maps data available.

  • Trouble Mounting External HD and CDs/DVDs

    Hi Guys,
Recently my iMac G5 (approx 1 yr old) has started having problems mounting disks and external hard drives. It has never been a problem in the past until now, when it wont mount disks and drives that ive been using in the past week (burnt cd) and year (external HD).
The external hard drive will only mount when the computer has been restarted and the drive is already connected and switched on,
And the CD will not mount at all, although it is shown in the Disk Utility list and wont give the option to mount but only eject.
Ive also refreshed the disk system preferenes to open iTunes when a disk is inserted however there seems to be no difference...
    Any suggestions???

After a huge update of the computer and giving it all a rest for a few days it has miraculously started working again...
But thanks for the info Dale - ill keep it in mind for the future as im sure something like this will happen again.

  • Can you use GPS and Navigation on a 5230 without a...

    Hi all,
I'm just wondering if you can use the Maps software on a 5230 without a SIM card. It works perfectly well with one, but the sim I will use in this phone does not have a data package, so I don't want to use Maps if I can only get GPS data in conjunction with a data connection.
    Could someone please advise?
    Thank you!
    John.

    Hi GarfordJB
Yes you can as just put my 5230 into "Offline" profile, but bear in mind that takes longer to lock on to position as totally dependent upon Integrated GPS.
You would need to go to Menu > Applications > Location > Positioning > Positioning methods and disable all except "Integrated GPS" as per screenshot here:http://i50.tinypic.com/2lk4g1w.jpg
In Maps application click on "spanner" icon bottom left of screen > Internet and set "Connection" to "Offline"

  • Single User Mode - mount external drive and copy user files to there

I have an iBook G4 running (I think) Tiger (although it may be Panther). AHT reports a bad HD and it will not boot from that drive. Mounting it via Target Disk to another Mac won't permit me to even see beyond the root directory; just a spinning sunburst at the bottom of the Finder window.
If I boot into single-user mode, I can "ls" and "cd" to see the files and folders in the home folder. Assuming the HD is named "Macintosh HD" and I have a USB-connected hard drive named "Backup", what are the commands I need to use in single-user mode in order to mount "Backup" and copy the user's home folder (there's only one on this drive) over to "Backup"?
As I indicated above, I'm not absolutely sure whether this iBook is running Panther or Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I'm in the middle of copying things.
I did a chmod -R ug+w (IIRC) to the 300GB volume and this made it writable.
I then CD'd to the Pictures folder on the Macintosh HD.
I then did a cp *.jpg /Volumes/300GB/ and found that it managed to copy all of the jpegs that were sitting loose in the Pictures folder. Some of the photos were corrupted but I expected this as the drive is reported to have a hardware issue by AHT.
I'm now in the process of copying the iPhoto Library using the cp -r command. Some files are being reported as bad and can't be copied but, again, I'm expecting this.
Whatever I can get from this drive will be a bonus. I'll mention that I used Drive Genius to duplicate the HD to a disk image and, while this was done successfully, it resulted in a "no filesystem" error when I attempted to mount it. However, I -did- ask for it to be mounted anyway and then used DiskWarrior on it (even though it didn't appear in the Finder). It took a few hours for DiskWarrior to come up with a "preview" of the disk (as the filesystem was thoroughly hosed). The User folder was nowhere to be found and every file that was displayed was corrupt. That's why I'm trying this "out of the GUI" process.
I'll thank everyone who made suggestions; they all pointed me in the proper direction.

  • Best GPS software w/external puck and Verizon?

For years I've used WM phones with an external gps receiver (i.trek M series) and iGuidance software.  It worked fantastic.  Now I've been forced to switch to a BB Curve running on Verizon.  I still have my i.trek M5 but don't know the best software to purchase.  I tried nav4all and it simply didn't work (didn't find my paired gps for some reason).  Tried to download a trial of Garmin and it won't support Verizon at all, even with an external receiver (or so the website claims).  Looked at MapQuest Navigator trial download; same issue, it won't support Verizon.  Looked at TelNav and they want $99 per year?  They're crazy.  GPS software will be commoditized soon and will wind up free in the very near future I believe.  I'm not paying yearly for TelNav.
So experts, I'm looking for a recomendation based on your experiences.  If iGuidance would just port their software over for BB, this would be a done deal!!!
    Thanks for any help.

I don't know what "bells and whistles" you are looking for but I am using the BB maps application and it works great. It is not voice prompted turn by turn directions but man it has a lot of good services. I also have loaded GPS Snitch and use them in unisom to be able to map friends locations in comparision to mine. They are both great but better together.

  • Using an external GPS with an iPhone 4S

For improved accuracy, I want to use an external GPS with my iPhone 4S. I have purchases a Dual XGPS150A Bluetooth GPS receiver and successfully paired it with the iPhone. Dual's "GPS Status Tool" app reports the GPS data from the device just fine. So now I want to get other apps like MotionX to use the GPS data from the XGPS150A in preference to the iPhone's own GPS.
Dual's technical support assures me this can only be done by putting the iPhone in Airplane Mode then re-enabling Bluetooth. Well that's a showstopper. However, in another post here, I found this statement from BrettAtBadElph: "As long as you are using an Apple-approved external GPS accessory like the Bad Elf, XGPS150, or GNS, you don't have to worry about configuring the GPS source being used. The iOS device will pick the source with the best accuracy, and shut down the internal receiver to save power."
Is BrettAtBadElph correct? If so, can anyone point me to some documentation?

I've received no responses, nor have I found any difinitive info elsewhere. But I can say that testing this weekend has made it clear that that BradAtBadElph is correct -- MotionX is clearly using the XGPS150A GPS data in favor of the iPhone's native GPS.
Funny aside: Dual's GPS Status Tool app is fairly weak -- it cannot dissplay any GPS data if another GPS-consuming app like MotionX or Waze is in memory.

Updating to iOS 8.3 has caused a connectivity issue between my iPad and my Dual150 external GPS. Can I revert to a previous version of iOS?

The only way to get this working again is to downgrade to 8.2
Seems Apple does not have this on a high priority list and am not willing to buy something that works for a lot of money. The flying community who uses this for navigation is having a lot of problems with this issue. The position awareness is compromised. Hope they fix this quickly

  • IPod 4 touch and external gps problem

    Hello.
iPod 4 touch with iOS 6.1.3 is connected to Pioneer AppRadio2. Everything works great only the external gps. The problem has started when the iPod has
been updated to 6.1.3. I've tried restart and reset device, changed privacy and location settings, changed time settings, but nothing helped. The problem is still
here and navigation is now useless.

Have you tried the standard fixes
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset the GPS/Pioneer unit
    - Go to the unit's support site
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • I'd love some help trying to figure out why my 2008 MacBook no longer recognizes my external drive and now is not downloading photos from my iphone....?

After many years of having no problems at all on my Macbook, I recently figured I should finally upgrade my OS. I did that about three weeks ago, updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I used Time Machine at least once after the OS upgrade but now Time Machine no longer recognizes the external drive I have used for all these years to back up. The MacBook does not "see" it. (Disk Utility does however.) The computer then also stopped recognizing another La Cie back-up that I have and now... my iPhone cannot download photos? Yikes.
I have, of course, shut down numerous times, used different cables (that worked for some) and the two USB drives. I even used a firewire. Nothing worked. I also tried to "Repair disk" on Disk Utility. It didn't work either, giving me an error (that I didn't save, sorry).
I read many other discussions on the file format of the external drive and of course I'd be happy to reformat the external drives--however, it is obviously a tad nerve-wracking to reformat drives before having an accessible back-up. Suggestions? I do not remember what file format they have but am pretty sure it's not the Mac file system someone mentioned. The drives are a 2009 WD "My Passport Elite" and La Cie 2007 d2 Quadra,
In terms of other hardware available, we do have another MacBook Air but it has  started rejecting both drives as well (without the Snow Leopard upgrade). We have an old Dell but it wouldn't have the disk space to help out much.
Any thoughts on the process involved would be welcome.  Any ideas on the iPhone rejection would be helpful as well! It is a 30gig iPhone 4 that has 20 or so gigs free (not clear as iTunes says that there are abour 18 Gigs on the phone but 24 free gigs? I may be bad at math but that's 40 gigs...).
I am checking out iCloud but apparently there are only 55 gigs available?
Will be glad to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

    Good afternoon Lyssa,
Phew. First of all, thanks in advance...these blogs are always comforting help!
So, to answer your questions: For the age of the hard drive.Well, I added memory a couple of years ago (RAM and hard drive). Being a mom leads me to eat up a fair amount of gigs with photos of my kids and, in fact, I think I entirely replaced the original drive, so it is a couple years younger than 2008 since I did that in March 2010. If there is some way to verify that (whether or not I replaced the entire drive), I'm all ears. I have 311 Gigs free, so it is not a space issue. I verified the startup disk on Disk Utilityand nothing showed up.
    Question 1- What formats...
The La Cie is format Windows NT Filesystem 3G ....At the time that I bought it I was still using a PC as well as a Mac and was told by afriend to use this format...
The WD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I again tried to repair the WD last night and this is the error message: "Error: DiskUtility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Also, Time Machine tried again to back-up and gave  me this error: "Files can't becopied onto the backup disk because it appears to be 'read only'. You may needto repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't berepaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machinepreferences to select a different backup disk."
    Question 2. Other cables...
I used two other cables with the WD and that didn't change anything.
Question 3... Fire Wire from the La Cie
Yes, I used the Firewire cable from the La Cie and it is indeed present, though still not visible in Finder. Since it is not Mac OSExtended I know that I can't use Time Machine with it.
    So, in summary...
I can plug in the La Cie and it is functional on the MacBook, visible on Disk Utility but not visible in Finder. The WD drive is not visible and not functional. So we can think it is indeed the WD that is not working.... Also, the iphone photos did, in the end, get downloaded, so it is not something more general.
    Causes...
I forgot to mention that there is a "lost+found" file on the WD which apparently points to a UNIX /OS issue?
    Some kind of "insurance"?....
I'm curious about how people avoid this kind of issue. You just regularly replace back-up drives and hard drives before problems come up? Time Machine is great and saves many of us from disasters, however, knowing that your Time Machine back-ups are vulnerable makes the whole system insecure. No way to have alarms ring before the drive goes out?
    As for ways ahead...
It seems that I ought to be able to copy off of the WD to the MacBook then erase it and reformat it and start over again. However, I haven’t been able to see its contents except on random occasions. If you have any ideas on how to copy the Time Machineback-ups from the WD, again, I'm all ears!

Apple doesn't have anything to do with this other than enforcing the DRM protection. The developers of this content expect to be paid if someone wants to use their content. When you purchase content in the app store, you purchase a license to use the content. This license does not permit you or anyone else to resell or give this content away. The individual you purchased the phone from simply does not have the right to sell or give away any purchased content on the phone. You were deceived.
