Tone on startup

I can't find anything about this, maybe someone can answer this question. Just upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11 using archive and install on my mid-2007 iMac. What a mess! Nothing is going right. This problem concerns a tone at start-up. I always had problems with freezing at startup. I would reset the PMU and repair permissions, use MacJanitor and rebuild the pre-binding every single time I had to start the computer. Now in Leopard I still freeze at startup, but the disk utility takes forever!! and doesn't repair anything when it does work!But i'm getting the obnoxious tone when I hit the power button before I get a screen. Sounds very ominous but I can't figure out what to do. What is is telling me, and how do I fix it? Thanks.
Rick

First, updating a broken system is never a good thing. Problems usually only get worse, never better.
All those things you have to do are abnormal and most likely indicate a hardware problem.
Anything but the normal startup tone indicates errors.
Macintosh startup tones:
Tones Error
Error Tone. (two sets of different tones) Problem with logic board or SCSI bus.
Startup tone, drive spins, no video Problem with video controller.
Powers on, no tone. Logic board problem.
High Tone, four higher tones. Problem with SIMM.

Your problem could be anything from bad RAM, to a bad HD to some other hardware problem.

  • Long Beep tone at startup - Unable to select boot partition

    Recently I was running a software update on an old G4 which had been working perfectly. When the system restarted it made a long beep tone then the usual bong. The system hung at the "starting login window" stage.
    The beep is not a bad RAM beep, that one is short. This is a long beep like one you get when you update firmware.
    Tried taking out and reseating the RAM but that did nothing.
    After booting into OF a couple of times, doing "Reset All", Zapping PRAM etc. we still the get tone at startup only now we just get the white OF screen. It no longer tries to boot into OSX unless we type "Mac Boot", in which case it hangs at the login window again.
    I attached an external drive with two partions, one with 10.3.9 and another with 10.4. Both will boot successfully on my old Pismo and my PB G4. When the OF screen came up I typed Mac Boot and held down the Option key. The blue screen came up and first boot partition was displayed, but the machine sat there and spun forwever searching for the others. I figured it was stuck on the internal drive so I disconnected the ribbon cable and tried again. This time both partions on the external drive are available, Yae! However when I go to select either one and click on the right arrow nothing happens. The selection seems to bounce back to the first partition. And through all of this the long beep tone is there at startup.
    So thats the stage we are at. If anyone can shed some light on this situation we would be most appreciative. What is causing the tone? How can I fix it?
    Why doesnt the system accept the boot drive selection?
    Mike

    Hi Petra,
    It was one of the recent security updates for 10.3.9 along with Quicktime, iTunes etc. I couldn't tell you exactly which ones as its been a few weeks since the original event. However I can say that I had already done the recommended firmware update for that machine several months before the crash.

  • 2nd internal drive not mounting, melodic tones at startup

    Main drive with System folder on it opens fine at startup, 2nd drive which is a 160 GB Maxtor drive will not mount, nor show up on Disk Utility. Both drives are connected correctly to a Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 card and have been working fine for over three years. Yesterday I went to startup and my computer made a melodic tone similar to a cell phone ringing. Is this an indicator that something's wrong with the drive? The computer is a 867mhz Quicksilver running OS 10.2.8. I tried a few things, I ended up disconnecting the 2nd drive from the ribbon connector & power supply and the melodic tones quit playing at startup. I tried the same ribbon connection and power supply from the dead drive on my good drive and it works fine. I can always replace a bad drive if that is the case, but I had some important video projects on the drive without a backup (lesson well learned here, ouch!). Is it possible to retrieve the data even though the drive will not mount? Any app suggestions or how do I attempt to accomplish this? Thank you!

    Many hours worth of work recovered from failed drive! Cool! If anyone out there experiences what I just went through here is what I did:
    The Maxtor drive wouldn't spin at startup, apparently the drive has a melodic tone that is supposed to "kickstart" the drive into spinning again when it fails. Well, it didn't do it's thing for me, so I went out and bought a Western Digital drive (supposedly a more reliable brand) with the same 160 GB capacity. I installed and partitioned it, then I installed the bad Maxtor drive in the third bay and ran another cable to my Tempo ATA card's second patch. I left the computer side door open, started up the computer and the drive started to make it's melodic tones again. I knocked on the top of the bad drive with a rubber hammer - wwrrrr, the drive took off running again! It didn't mount the first time, but after a restart it started up on it's own and mounted. What super luck! I was able to transfer all of my work onto the new drive without a hitch. I also found that is very important to read directions pertaining to the proper way to connect a jumper connector on the back of a drive when using multiple drives with an ATA card. I don't trust the Maxtor drive anymore now, so I will just pull it out of the machine. Thanks for the tips Noble B!

  • 3 tones at startup

    I have a MBP about 1.5 years old.  Now it gives me 3 tones at start up.  No screen.  When I try to set it up in Target Mode my other MBP doesn't see it, even though the nuclear looking icon is floating around.  I have changed the ram and zapped the pram.  Any ideas?

    Still sounds like bad memory. Read:

  • Dead tone on startup and instruction to type "mac-boot" - Why?

    A strange thing happened when I pressed the power on button on our iMac G5 running the latest version of Tiger. I got a very loud tone and then a grey screen which said "welcome to apple firmware" and then a line saying to boot up type "mac-boot" to shutdown type "shutdown" and return. I typed "mac-boot" and it now seems fine but I haven't seen this before and wondered if I should be concerned about something that may be going wrong inside the mac, ie what caused this?

  • No tone at startup...

    Hi,
    Through another forum I have been directed to reset my P-Ram to check if my Firewire drives are the issue. When I start up my iMac I am not getting any sort of tone at all. I am supposed to be holding down 'command' 'option' 'r' after I hear the tone in order to zap the P-Ram and I don't have a tone. My MacBook does, but not my iMac.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, ok so I tried that. It starts up, the tone goes, and then while I am holding <option><command><r> it will fade to black make another tone and then fade back up. If I continue to hold down those buttons it will keep doing that.
    I am still not getting a response from my FireWire ports which was the original problem. Are there any other resets/diagnostics I can run to try and make this work or do I have to take in the iMac to the Apple store?
    Thanks.

  • 3 BEEPS AT STARTUP (MBP 13' late 2011) new hard drive

    HI, I need some help I have changed the hard drive myself of MacBook Pro (the hard drive died after 3 years of intense use)
    (I have a mac book pro 13' from late 2011- 8go ram, 500go hard drive, and i5 double core)
    So, I have now my new clean hard drive inside the baby, and I turn it on, and load the CD of OS X SNOW LEOPARD bought on Apple s website)

    Here I have the white screen. I click on the cd icon, and the BEEP BEEP BEEP .... BEEP BEEP BEEP .. And so on, so I force it to turn off.
    WHATS GOING ON??? I've heard that it's a ram issue, I removed it and placed it back up and there is still the issue...
    I you have any idea how to fix that pls tell me, thanks

    3 tones at startup is usually an indicator of a RAM issue:

    If you are using the White retail Snow Leopard disk to install that OSX, it will not work.  I have a late 2011 MBP and that disk and I have tried to do that thus I speak from experience.  (There is a way to install Snow Leopard but not that way).
    The proper way to install the original OSX is to boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys and follow the instructions.  This will require a solid Internet connection.  (This should install Lion)

  • Macbook Pro display has no picture after I turn it on

    I am running 10.6.7 on a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008). The machine was fine this morning and an hour later, I booted it up and the screen remains dark.
    The light on the front of the machine shows that it is on. The battery is charged and the laptop is plugged in.
    I have tried the following and with all the screen remains dark
    -- booting from the Install Disc to run a disk Utlity
    -- Connecting to my iMac via Firewire to boot up as an external drive
    -- Resetting the PRAM
    -- Resetting the SMC
    For all, I dont really hear any startup noises and definitely no mac tone on startup. The only indicationt that the machine is on is the light at the front.

  • Multiple Error Messages CFB2 after hotfix installation

    Hi,
    I just installed the CFB2 Hotfix on Windows 7 pro 64 AND 32bit machines and now get a ton of startup errors in the error log. I have no idea what is causing this. Here is a small part of the error log. I have tried starting with the -clean option and still get the errors. It's approx. 900 lines of messages.
    Any way to remove the cause of these?
    Thanks,

  • Rectangle outcode() not working quite right

    I wrote the following to try to capture if the rect is top bottom right left, however it doesnt work right. If I replace the statements eg lets say for top to code==2 || code ==6 || code ==3 it works fine. Any idea what im doing wrong
    code = nodeRect.outcode(currentRect.getX(), currentRect.getY());
    if(code & Rectangle.OUT_TOP) != 0 ||
    (code & (Rectangle.OUT_RIGHT | Rectangle.OUT_TOP)) != 0 ||
    (code & (Rectangle.OUT_LEFT | Rectangle.OUT_TOP) ) != 0)
         //This means the point is above the rectangle
    else if(code & Rectangle.OUT_BOTTOM) != 0 ||
    (code & (Rectangle.OUT_RIGHT | Rectangle.OUT_BOTTOM) ) != 0 ||
    (code & (Rectangle.OUT_LEFT | Rectangle.OUT_BOTTOM) ) != 0 )
    //This means the point is below the rectangle
    else if(code & Rectangle.OUT_RIGHT) != 0 )
    //This means the point is to the right of the rectangle
    else if(code & Rectangle.OUT_LEFT) != 0 )
    //This means the point is to the left of the rectangle
    }

    >there is no tone upon startup.
    First of all, check whether the speaker is properly connected.
    >Perhaps it's time for the motherboard dishwasher trick.
    Before attempting to clean the logic board, it could be a good idea to closely examine it. Look for leaking electrolytic capacitors, other discoloured components, damaged printed circuits, et cetera.
    As you probably know already, repair work inside a compact Macintosh computer can be very dangerous due to high voltages, and must be carried out by someone with the necessary expertise only.

  • Getting My Mac Book Pro in Order Post Archive and Install

    Hi there,
    My 17" Macbook Pro recently closed down on me, giving me three longs beeps and not starting up again. I archived and installed, for the first time ever, and was relieved when my Mac bumped back into life with all of my work and apps stashed away in 'Previous Systems'. I then embarked on going through 'Disk Utility' to create a disk image of the preserved work (I was following advice from the Mac support site) but the down load process was so slow I gave up and have resorted to sorting through the previous system manually and dragging info across into the new setup. I am completely green to this and have no idea if I am doing the right thing?
    However, I also have some issues:
    My spotlight search does not work, I type in a search item then get the spinning wheel, and spotlight closes down?
    I want to reset my mail to just the way it was, with all my old sent and received messages. I can't even get mail to work, I get:
    The server error encountered was: The server “[email protected]” cannot be contacted on port 110.
    Any advice here?
    I am running OSX 10.5 and I tried to do the hardware test but the computer told me it cannot be run on this computer??
    Thanks in advance
    James

    Your profile says you have a Powerbook, and yet your question is regarding a MacBook Pro. MacBook Pros and Powerbooks are totally different machines on the inside. If the issue is with the MacBook Pro, you need the MacBook Pro installer discs to run the hardware test. If it is with a Powerbook, then you need the Powerbook installer discs. If you have the correct discs according to this, it may be your firmware installation at one point failed. That's sometimes the reason for the three long tones. Here's a guide to the tones at startup on Intel Macs (MacBook Pros):

    And PowerPC Macs (Powerbooks):

  • Weird bootup chime...

    Hi all,
    I recently bought a 20" iMac, not been having many problems with it really - just the occaisional application crash (happenned when I first got my macbook, too) whilst it was settling in.
    But, I've got this weird "issue" - when the iMac boots and plays its chime, it plays the second half of the chime again 3 times.. then after that the gray apple finally shows up.
    Any idea whats wrong guys and how I can fix it?

    M3G4UK, while what you describe is not exactly what is referred to here, check this article out anyway:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303083
    Typically a series of beeps or tones at startup means something in your machine failed the POST at startup (Power On Self Test) The above article references the POST error codes (beeps/flashes) for Intel Macs.
    I would suggest you run the Apple Hardware Test on your computer and see if it comes up with anything, then post back your results.
    To start an Intel Mac in Hardware Test mode you need to insert Install Disc 1 that came with your computer, then hold down the " D " key on your keyboard.
    The following article explains what to do:

  • Turning off Power-On "Chime" during start-up

    Hello fellow Mac users,
    I need advice on how to temporarily and/or permanently turn off the
    Power-On/Restart "Chime" during start-up on iMac (with wireless MAC keyboard).
    I tried holding down the 'mute' button during start-up until Apple symbol shows up and that did not work.
    I also tried 'muting' volume before restart and that also did not work.
    My external speakers are shut off but the Chime sound still comes from the iMac speakers.
    Thanks,
    Edwardson

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Some folks use Statrtup Sound.
    If you completely silence your Mac you remove its form of communicating issues to you during startup. The chime alerts you that the Mac has passed the POST, Power On Self Test and has found usable RAM. When it fails to do so it may sound other tones during startup to alert you to what is wrong.
