Too big a file???

My daughter is doing an anthology for her school. There is a page for each student. For each page she scans a writing sample, a drawing and a photo, saves them as TIFFs, and then puts them in the template she has made up. It's been saved as a continuous file for printing purposes. She has done four of nine classes and the file size is over 2 GB. Pages will not open it, I suspect because of its size. Is there anything to be done other than starting over and either saving each class separately as TIFFs, or together as JPGs? In the end she will export it as a PDF and take it to the printer. Thank you for any suggestions/help.
Cheers, Peter

TIFFs can be really, really big. You might consider converting them to .png first. You can use Preview, Graphic Converter, Photoshop/Photoshop Elements, etc. to do the conversion. Another option might be .gif. JPGs are lossy so I wouldn't use it for drawings but photos would be OK.

I've got a .wav file that's too big to email.
Is there a way to reduce the file so that I can email it?

Control-click it in the Finder, compress or archive it, and email the resulting zip. If it's still too large, use a service such as this one or an IM service to send it.

  • Too big XML file to parse

I have this big xml file which is 13MB which I am trying to parse by Java. The problem is that I get the message
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap spaceI am loading from xml file as following:
    DocumentBuilderFactory docBuilderFactory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder docBuilder = docBuilderFactory.newDocumentBuilder();
Document doc = docBuilder.parse (new File("xmlGeneSynonyms.xml"));  //Here I get problem!!!Do you have any suggestion how I can work this out?
    thanx

I agree with the poster who said SAX may be a better choice. 13 MB, though (probably) smaller than the memory space of your machine, is still going to take a while to parse & build the nodes in memory. Unless you are going to keep the parsed XML tree in a memory for a LONG time and do a LOT with it, SAX is likely a better choice.
With SAX, you just parse a little at a time until you find what you're looking for, then quit. This would be a better wa to go, for example, if want only few parts of the 13 MB document.
And how many 13 MB documents do you have? If more than just one or two, you're going to take a huge performance hit by trying to parse each one & stuff the whole thing into memory if you're only interested in a small part of it.

  • Help! why iMovie app stalls when skimming over movie clips? too big a file?

    Hello all,
I've only been using a Mac for about a year; and am pretty new to using iMovie as well. I have a Core 2 Duo- Macbook with OS X 10.4.11 and 3 gig of RAM. Anyway, forgive if I don't use the correct terminology:
Okay I know my screencapture vido clips (.mov format) are about 30-67mb. I'm only loading one at a time that I need to work with in the 'New Event" section.
Even if I turn off every application, disable spotlight, take out the widget apps, background running apps, and turn off wireless, I still get the iMovie app...
...um how to describe...hmm.....well....that pinwheel/hourglass....."please wait a sec' thing comes up whenever I take my mouse and try to skim a SHORT amount of video (with no audio i might add). So if I move it then it takes several seconds for the app to catch up and then play the part that i skimmed over. I don't have to move it far or fast. This is happening even though I have added the movie from New Event to the project space.
Ah, I just looked more carefully and this 'catching up' thing is happening no matter what I'm doing like even trying to get to the menu or close part of the project window. And I might add my fan is gets louder and faster a few seconds after trying to do anything in iMovie and goes down after I do something else shortly afterwards. I noticed on the Activity monitor that it's taking ALOT of CPU power to just skim over little bits of video (or so it seems from the spikes in the visual meter in green 'user' bar part)
    What's up with this?
Please help as I'm trying to finish this graduate school webpage project that needs to be turned in tomorrow (yeah I know, I procrastinated :-P
I'm also trying to save money from calling Apple Support and pay them because I didn't pay for that extended care plan

Okay thanks for that explanation of things. I had forgotten about having data/media on a separate HD. I should have remembered that from when I've dabbled in creating music and had read to store one's audio and other data on a separate drive.
So, yes all my media is stored in the same folder and just on the main drive. Also, in the import settings i chose for the files to be copied to where ever it copies them. I thought that might help. Was that a good choice or.....?
I guess in the long term I need to switch to my external drive. However, I'm not at my house at the moment, and can't use the drive because I have to learn to config it anyway into two separate partitions and formats for storing PC stuff on and Mac stuff...currently have a PC-NTFS formatted partition with PC data and haven't taken the time to learn how to do the other partitioning for the Mac.
I need to figure out how I can deal with this stuff between today and tomorrow
So from the info above in the other reply I guess the Mpeg 4 format is not acceptable then for a format as you talk about making it easier to scrubb? I did a quick screen capture to see which file formats I can save stuff in. So are you saying I should have saved the files in DV-PAL format? BTW, I don't have any audio recorded with the file. It's just a visual presentation. also BTW, the reason I chose the mpeg 4 was in thinking that it might be better with the file size when converting the finished iMovie and then converting it to a Flash .flv file so I can put a small video on a webpage.
So would I need to re-save the clips somewhere to another format? Hmm which app would re-save a current video file if I need to do that: iMovie, Flash, Quicktime, iDVD, and Dreamweaver is the stuff I have that would deal with any kind of video.
I hope all this doesn't end up being that I need to use my external HD which I don't have the time to research/re-read that info for dual formatting a drive for PC and HD. Unfortunately, I've got three assignments to do with the time I have today (Tues.) and tomorrow, then school is finished.

  • Compressor 4.1.2 BluRay Encoded File is too big - Help!

I just encode a 4 hours of HD footage using compressor's Bluray output (H.264 Video & AC3 Audio).  It took near 10 hours of seemingly wasted time.  I am working with 25g blurry discs and the H.264 File Size is 27.71 gigs.  So now I need to re-encode.
How can I control the file size in this newest version of compressor?  In the past compressor always knew to keep the h-264 file size under 25gigs.  Any ideas?
    Thank you!

If you visit the FCP X discussions forum you will several threads about Blu Ray issues. There are clearly some problems that affect some systems in unexpected ways

That's why I suggested twice that you do a short, 15 minute test…so you wouldn't have to waste al that time to find out it wasn't encoding the projected size.
Sure. Drop both he average and max bit rate. But do the 15 minute test first to confirm it will fiit. I don't know why it's overshooting but it is and there's some guess work involved,

Making a interactive PDF from indesign, but it's too big. Tried to reduce file size in Acrobat, but it does not reduce file size.

Use the Optimize PDF command in Acrobat, it gives you more control. I think it's under the Advanced menu in Acrobat 9 Pro and File > Save As > Optimized PDF in Acrobat X Pro.
You might try playing around with different settings. You can also click the Audit Space button at the upper right to see if its from images or other things causing the file size problem.
Unfortunately, InDesign doesn't write interactivity in a very optimized way. You get better results with buttons, for example, creating them in Acrobat Pro and using the Duplicate command to duplicate them across multiple pages.

    Hi,
When you have the browser open (Internet Explorer) then press the Alt key on the keyboard. It should show you the file options at the top..Then uncheck work offline and check..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Score printout: files are too big for printout since Pro 7

    Hi there,
I have a serious problem printing scores with Pro7: the files appear to be too big, so I can't print them. When I try to print a simple 1 page part, I get the error: "printer out of memory" and I have a HP Laserjet with 8 Mb memory. A PDF from a 3 page part made in Logic 6.3 is 102Kb, a PDF from the same 3 page part opened in Pro7 is 2,4Mb! Everything seems normal: page setup 100% etc.
When I open a song made in Pro7 with Logic 6.3, the files are much much smaller. Does anybody know what's wrong, now I can't print scores with Pro7!
    Thanx, Peter

    Hello Rohan,
Thanks for your effort. I created a PDF-file with a totally different printerdriver. The result is the same: I get a very large file. A 3 page part PDF-file is 2,4 Mb, also with the other fake driver. I'm used to send PDF-files of sheet music through the internet and files this big are no option.
And very annoying: I can't print out scores using Pro7!
    Best regards,

  • I need to compress an InDesign file to web-quality pdf but file size is still too big. Help!

I need to compress an InDesign file to web-quality pdf but file size is still too big. Help!

    Hi Bill,
It sounds like your document has a lot of pages and/or images in it.
Instead of using the normal InDesign > Export command to create a PDF, you may be able to reduce the file size by printing to a PostScript file, then distilling it to PDF using Acrobat Distiller.

  • The offset in the file is too big"? Other than, hey it's FAT formatted, etcetera!

Does anyone have an answer for "The offset in the file is too big" error while creating a file using QT API "writeToFile"?
I mean something other it's FAT formatted, not enough space, et cetera. Anyone?

First how much free space do you have on your boot drive.  For normal use it's recommended to have a minimum of 10 GB free space.  If you use iDVD up that to 20-25 GB.  Lots of cache and swap space is needed.
Create the slideshow in iPhoto, set the disiplay size ratio to 4:3 and export it out of iPhoto at the medium or large size.
Open a new project in iDVD and add the QT file to the iDVD menu being careful to avoid any dropzones.
With a 90 minute slideshow you can use a single layer DVD disk. iDVD doesn't care about the file size of the media added to a project, only the playing time of the project, including menus.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
You shouldn't try to create the slideshow in iDVD with still photos if the number of still photos is larger than 99.  That creates a pause or stall when playing back on many set top players.

  • Can a file get too big to load?

I have a file that is HD and I've been editing it for about two weeks. Its about 2 hours long and I just started adding livetype titles as its nearly complete.
But this afternoon, I had to reboot my computer and now the file wont reload (gets to 47% then says "file cannot be loaded.")
Did it go corrupt? Or is it more likely that I've just pushed the file's requirements past my system's memory allotment?
Even today's autosaved files wont load (so I had to go back to a saved version from earlier this week).
I have 3gb of memory installed. Is FCE trying to tell me I have to install memory?
Either way, if the file get's too big for the machine, why wouldn't FCE have crashed? The file closed down with no problems and this is the second time its happened.

I'm using 3.5 HD and the project file is 4.5MB
I'm starting to fear the problem has to do with the livetype movie inserts. The application didn't even hiccup until I started adding my title-ing sequences -- especially one particular psd import that uses a transparent background.
I'm going to give your suggestion a true and report back, though...
    thanks.

  • File Too Big to Open?

I have a ~26 MB CSV file, which I had wanted to open in Numbers 09. But when I did, Numbers displayed the Opening dialog box, and then said that the file can't be opened because it was too big. How can I work around this and open the CSV file?

CSV is a text file, so if it's a spreadsheet, it likely exceeds the 64K row limit for a Numbers table.
You might be able to open the file in TextEdit, then split it into smaller pieces which you will be able to open.
Or it may be possible to open the file using either NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, both of which can be downloaded from their respective websites (linked to the names in this line).
Make a copy of the file to try these with.
    Regards,
    Barry
