Too early for the retina, too late for the non retina? Which one?

Hi everyone,
Sorry for yet another "Which MBP should I buy" post but I have read through all the of the discussions I can find on this topic as well as around the web.
I am a digital designer who is currently using a PC only because up until now I have never been in the financial position to transition over to Mac.
I am currently trying to decide between getting a a 15" Mac Book Pro or 15" Retina Mac Book Pro.
15-inch: 2.6GHz
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz memory
750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
High res anti-glare screen
versus:
15-inch: Retina display
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz memory
512GB flash storage1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
I will be using Adobe CS6 Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver sometimes all at the same time. I occasionally have a video project where I will be using Premiere and After Effects. I am also looking into upskilling myself and becoming versed in at least basic 3D modelling. I am looking at a MBP because portability is important.
Given my job, going retina seems like a no brainer but I have a few concerns:
Speed, processing power - which will suit my needs?
This is an investment for me, I want it to last at least 3-4 years:
Is getting a standard MBP now just too late and bidding in the past?
Will resale of a standard MBP suck in 3-4 years?
In 3 years time will I need an upgrade, and if so, how will I even do this with a virtually unupgradeable (from what Ive read) Retina MBP?
About 80% of the time I plan on hooking up the MBP to a Thunderbolt display - whats the point in a Retina?
If I don't get a Retina and I need to start designing Retina graphics, will I be faced with added dificulty because I use standard MBP?
Is it realistic to assume Retina graphics won't become mainstream for 3-4 years allowing me to bide my time with a standard MBP, upgrading to a Retina later?
At work I use a 2-3 year old iMac and the screen is already magical compared to my PC and it seems to do fine for me. I've been in store and played with both and I am genuinely confused. I just feel like getting a standard MBP is like jumping on a train when it's already reached it's destination.
Budget wise I can afford the base level Retina MBP I outlined above but if I can save money, that'd be ideal. Being me I will automatically chose the best possible solution but I need to be rational about my needs. Someone please help, I just want a Mac!
Thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated

In general
Retina cannot upgrade RAM.  Storage can be upgraded, but more $ than upgrading the non-Retina unit.
Non-Retina unit can upgrade RAM  base-4 GB to 16 GB for about $85 (cf. OWC.)  HD can be replaced with SSD or larger HD.
Therefore lack of "upgradability" in Retina
No optical drive in Retina.
The non-Retina has  Ethernet and FireWire ports, and a slot for a secure cable- the Retina  none of these ports.

10.7 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
    The model 2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in the model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-3-g b-memory-limitation-details.html
OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. the model 2,1 is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • As of 2015: Best SSD for 9,2 Macbook Pro (mid-2012 non Retina)

Hi All, this is my first post in the community, so I apologize ahead of time if it is evident in my query.
I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina. Model ID: MacBookPro9,2.(i7, 2.9 GHz)
My question is: as of today (April 2015) what is the best SSD available (around 500GB in size) for my specific laptop? I've searched quite a few communities and just around Google and have found numerous options that people swear by and the same options that people swear against. What's been difficult is a lot of the posts were created much earlier on (which is expected for a MBP from 2012). I have read good (and bad) things about Samsung 840, 850 pro, 850 evo; as well as hearing good things about Crucial's M4, Mx100, Mx200. My preference is to spend approximately $200 for a 500GB unless there is clear evidence that I need to splurge on an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro because the Samsung/Crucial drives will just cause me trouble.
If anyone can lead me to the SSD's that Apple themselves use, I would be much appreciative. As of now, I'm not even sure which Controller they utilize (Marvell?) and if they support TRIM. Any information to shed some light on this would be great as a lot of my knowledge has purely been from the articles I've been reading in the past few days.
I know this question has been asked over and over again; but again, I am asking it to try and find the best SSD as of late.
    Thanks ahead of time!

"I thought the non Retina MBPs were still connected via a SATA connection. "
That is correct and that is why I was recommending that people buy that 2012 MBP non Retina that Apple was selling until just recently. Having the SATA connection while slower than PCIe allowed you more flexibility in purchasing upgraded drives.
"I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina"
So you bought one of these? Be aware that if you modify the laptop in any way your warranty will be void unless the work is done by an Apple approved tech if Apple becomes aware of it.
That said you could put a 480 SSD from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
That can be had for $229 currently.
I'd be wary of installing a Samsung in there because of problems like this:
Samsung 850 EVO in Early '11 MBP
A lot of people are running that drive just fine but now and then....
I've installed 6 OWC SSDs in various Macs and have had 0 problems and 0 hassles formatting and installing them.

    Another problem.....
When recording programmes I am frequently finding that the recording is starting way too early...5-10 minutes....and often ends too early (very annoying as one misses the end of a particular programme).
    Any help, gratefully received!
    Thanks

Recording should start 2 minutes before the scheduled start time and end 5 minutes after the scheduled stop time (by default - you can increase this).
The box won't automatically cope with programmes which start late. Are the programmes you're having a problem with starting on time?
Is the time displayed on the box correct?

No way for us to know for sure (without similar product/issues) but the

their drivers should be available through Apple Software Updates:

  • Using the correct charger for hp dv6? 90 or 120w?? which one? help!

Hi guys, currently im using a charger from my hp dv6-6153sa, but i need to cut this story short so you understand.
First of i changed the motherboard in this laptop, the motherboard is from the hp pavilion dv6-6198sp however the battery is from a hp dv6-6b60sa.
    So the charger i'm using is from a hp dv6-6153sa which is a 90w charger. 19v 4.74a
So am i right in thinking i would be better of using a 120watt charger?
Any advice would be much appreciated! thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The specifications that I  have seen show a 120 Watt power adapter is required for both. So yes, you should use a 120 Watt power adapter.

  • How do I know if I have the new iPad or the iPad 2. I bought it today but chose not to get the cellular version of the new iPad and now am unsure of which one they have given me. I know I was charged for the new one

I bought what I think to be the new iPad but chose to go with the non cellular option. Now I'm not sure if they have given me the new iPad or the iPad 2. I got a black 64gb one and need an easy way to determine the differences. I haven't put iOS 6 on it.

  • 15" retina display on a 15" non-retina late 2011 MBP?

    Hello,
I am curious if i can mount a 15 inch retina display on my 15 inch non retina mac book pro, early 2011.
There are a lot of build differences but except the connectors i believe it could be done.
In Romania mac books cost a small fortune (7 - 8 months pay) and it would be very hard to replace my laptop just for the screen.
Please help me out with rational and direct answers.
Thank you very much for your time!

Not possible even with a newer non retina MBP.
    Ciao.

  • I have 15" 2010 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. I need to activate Bootcamp and install Windows 7. I ran software update. Does this update update Bootcamp? Or do I need to comb thru the 4 pages of updates and somehow determine which ones I need?

My goal is to activate Boot Camp and the install Windows 7 in 64 bit mode on my 15" MacBook Pro (mid 2010 model)
    I have several questions:
    1. I ran software update and am up to date. Does this mean that my yet to be activated Boot Camp ap is also up to date?
There are 4 confusing pages of updates listed at Apples website for Boot Camp. I am having a hard time understanding what I need and don't need. For example, what version of Boot Camp do I have? I have Boot Camp Assistant version 3.0.4. Does this mean I have Boot Camp ver 3?
    2. The printed Boot Camp instructions do not explain the process of using downloaded Windows drivers; the instuctions only refer to drivers on the original disks. I have the original install disks from around mid 2010 but I am sure many things have been updated by now. Wouldn't the best idea be to download and install? But the instructions only cover using the original disks. How do I use downloaded drivers?

You have Mac OS X Snow Leopard, so you are going to use Boot Camp 3 on Windows. After installing Windows 7 on your MacBook, insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install the Boot Camp drivers from here. Then, as the Boot Camp drivers that your Snow Leopard disc contain are outdated, open Apple Software Update on Windows to install the most recent Boot Camp drivers.

On Snow Leopard, you can only download the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2010 MacBook Air. On Lion and Mountain Lion, you have to download the Boot Camp drivers for all the computers. If you try to download the Boot Camp drivers on Snow Leopard with your computer, you will get a message telling that there aren't any drivers to download for your MacBook Pro

  • PLZ PLZ ANYBODY were is the verizon iphone 4 wifi antenna (as in which one of the black little marks)

I need help knowing this for my iphone drops the wifi and knowing were the antenna is could help thx :)

To be honest, When the verizon iphone first came out, I thought it would be the most talked about event in the tech world but the further we get, the more we see how far back the verizon iphone really is.  I cancelled my att contract early, paid 375 dollars to do so and what do I get in return? an os that is sub standard and data that moves slower than my pet turtle, nick.
Why are we not recieving the latest and greatest features to iOS? why do we still not have the nitro safari browser? and why can I test drive iCloud beta with all my other iOS and mac osx devices except for my verizon iphone? Yes, it's not entirely verizon's fault but as america's largest network, you would think vzn would take some kind of action to help bring it's customers what they deserve and are paying for.  ANY WHY DOES MY FRIEND WHO HAS AN ANDROID(GOD, I HATE THAT STUPID GREEN CHARACTER) GET TWICE THE DATA SPEEDS AS ME WHEN HE'S ALSO ON VERIZON??? I feel my data usage is being throttled. And if that's true, verizon  should really allow us out of our contracts without fee because I was not advised my data, which is already slow to start, would be slowed down even further because the carrier is worried their network might overload. This is how vzn handles avoiding ATT's woes? not by having a better network that can handle heavy volume? WOW WAS I MISLED. I can't believe im saying this but att is looking better and better everyday. Not to mention their new unlimited any mobile plan that could save me alot of money every month.
At least, apple or vzn should issue a statement of some sort so their customers at least know what to expect in the near future regarding features and updates.

  • I have a file it has a Hold - There are a number of holds in the hold list how do i find out which one this file has

    Hi
I have a file which has a Hold.
However, It could be one of a number of Holds as defined by the Holds list. How do I (ideally in PowerShell) find out which hold is being used to hold the file and how can I remove that Hold from the file so I can change it and re-apply the hold ?
    Thanks
    Nigel
    Nigel Price NJPEnterprises

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to remove Hold from the file.
If an item has been added to more than one hold, you can view the list of holds that pertain to that by using the Compliance Details command.
Open the list or library that contains the item for which you want to view the hold information.
Point to the item that you want, click the arrow that appears, and then click Compliance Details.
On the Compliance Details dialog, click Add/Remove from hold.
On the Hold Status page, click the arrow under the Remove from hold option to view a list of holds the item is associated with.
You can use the Compliance Details command to remove an individual item from a hold.
Open the list or library that contains the item that you want to remove from a hold.
Point to the item that you want, click the arrow that appears, and then click Compliance Details.
In the Hold Status section, click Add/Remove from a hold.
On the Item Hold Status page, select the Remove from hold option and then select the hold from which you want to release the item.
    Click Save.
For more information, you can refer to:
Create a hold to suspend documents or items

  • I know some of my photos have NOT been imported in to the iPhoto library. How can I find which ones?

In error, for a period, I had iPhoto set up such that photos were not imported into the iPhoto library but left scattered around my iMac. How can I find which ones without selecting each individual photo - there are nearly 9,000?

Are you able to view them in full size in the library, i.e. don't get this
when you try to view the photo in full size?  If you can then you can do the following to consolidate all of the master image files inside the library.
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
