It's one of the older Yonah iMacs and as it's "Out of Stock" it's probably not really available just sat there to score well on the price checker websites that will trawl for the lowest priced iMacs and hence list PCWorld at the top. (Call me cynical! )

Saw a ad in kijiji selling a brand new 440s for $1250 cash.

There's no guarantee you will get the price on eBay you expect.
Your original iPhone may sell for a decent price since there are still people out there who wish to use iPhone illegally on non authorised networks.
Personally I have lent out my original iPhone, got an O2 pay as you go SIM card for iPhone and given it to a friend to use to see if they can live with iPhone compared to their usual button led mobile (so far they have abandoned their button led mobile in favour of iPhone, so once they are out of contract with their current provider, I think there will be another iPhone dedicatee on the books)

ITunes 7 ...too good to be true... start menu folder problems

If any one out there like me and prefers to keep there start menu / programs organized then you might run into this ... itunes 7 automatically installs itunes into the directory directly under start menu/programs....and if i try to move the folder into a sub-folder such as start-menu/programs/media folders ... itunes will reinstall itself and make another new folder under start-menu/programs .... this is quite upsetting

It said my ipod update was complete. Then when I go to disconnect it, it says "itunes is updating the ipod. are you sure you want to disconnect it?"

looks like its time to uninstall iTunes 7, go back to the previous version, restor my ipod to factory settings and remove all the songs, then start over.

Beware too good to be true

I recently switched from Comcast I've had nothing but issues with these scammers. I was told I pay 85 a month for the package special they are running for one year. First they took three weeks to setup before I could use it took three techs to setup and finally I was only using the service for a month. They charged me those three weeks and a month. I paid the first bill of 65.00 but then a week later I get a bill for 213.00. I've only used them for a month....they said the first bill I paid was for the partial month I explained I didn't use it until three weeks after the first tech showed up and the last tech fixed it. So please explain to me how they came up with that number again I didn't agree to any charges other than activation and setup for 49.99 so plus 85.00 for monthly how do they come up with 213.00 again I already sent them 65.00 they told me there's nothing they could do....so to save you a headache unless you are prepared to spend 300 dollars for setup don't use uverse cable and Internet. I knew 60.00 a month for a year would have a catch they don't tell you that when they promise you the world to get your business. Scammers! I wish I just stuck with Comcast.

Did you sign up online or by phone? What discounts were you promised?

Is X48C Platinum Too Good to Be True?

Although I've built several MSI motherboard systems over about five years, I'll admit to never being more hesitant to start a new build than right now. I've literally been "on hold" since about November 2007, buying just dribs and drabs of components, but always side-stepping and delaying the motherboard purchase.
I want to stay Intel, I want to build right out there on the "bleeding edge" . . . a first in itself for me. This build will be pressed into heavy duty HD video rendering as it's primary, nearly sole, function.
OK, I'll say it - DDR3 spooks me, both its very high present cost, but more I'm concerned about its long-term viability. Maybe I shouldn't remember things like RDRAM & RAMBUS, but I do.
If DDR3 becomes the new memory standard - and it very well may - I want to be able to migrate to it easily, i.e., without changing motherboards. But I want to build NOW, preferably with DDR2.
So, very clearly, the NEW MSI X48C Platinum, with it's dual DDR2/DDR3 capability appears to be just what the geek ordered . . . but . . . where is it?
Literally the Internet (and especially various Sellers like Newegg to name just one) seems to be almost void of ANY information regarding this motherboard.
Even these fine MSI Forums are almost without X48C Platinum mention.
I didn't hijack an existing thread. Yes, maybe I rambled, but I'm a loyal MSI old guy geek builder in need of any advice and/or comments out there. Please respond.

I would go with Xeon based workstation mainboard from video edit system...... something based around the Intel 5000 chipset. FBdimm slightly cheaper than DDR3 and is now a proven product.....

Verizon Edge, to good to be true, or an outright lie?

I recently (May 15th, 2014) went into a GoVerizon store to upgrade two of our phones on our family plan.
We have 5 lines connected and we have been on the 1400 family shared minutes with text $10 extra per phone.
We were due for upgrades (actually some of us were due for an upgrade in 2011).
So, as we were looking at our options, the representative (Alissa) explains the Edge plan to us.
She explained that with the special offer, if we choose the 10gb plan we would get $25 off our line fee, AND $25 off our monthly phone payment.
This was without a two year agreement.
Well, this offer was too good to pass up! We would have 5 new iPhone 5S' with 10GB of data and only have to pay about $200 a month.
How could we pass it up? We would only have to pay $15 per month for line fee's, and only $2.17 per month for phone cost fee.
I asked Alissa if she was sure that we would get $25 off each of these things and Alissa said, "Yes!"
As I thought about it overnight, I just didn't believe it, how could they give credit on both the line fee and the phone fee? So I went in the next day to verify what I was told and spoke with the manager of the store (Elisabeth). She explained the plan to me again, and gave me the very same information.
I questioned her over and over asking how Verizon could do this. She said, "I don't know, it's a great deal, I think that they would like everyone to be on this Edge plan."
So, now we have 5 new iPhone 5S' and the 10GB Edge plan, no contract and we didn't need to use our upgrades.
I've been with Verizon since I began using a cell phone. It's been like 16 years!
Today (May 20th, 2014) I went in to the same store because my 23 year old daughter wanted on the plan too. She is currently with AT&T and bought a used iPhone 4S to avoid a 2 year agreement with them.
Elisabeth was out for the week and a different employee was working, his name is Aaron. I told Aaron how excited I was at such a great deal. "How can Verizon do it, I mean $25 off our line and our device, Wow!" I said to Aaron. "Um no, just your line, not your device too." What!?! Are you kidding me?" I was here twice last week, for hours verifying that this plan was indeed what Alissa and Elisabeth were telling me. What am I supposed to do!? We were pushing it to have the bill increase to $200, I can't pay $300!!" I said, now feeling a bit sick to my stomach.
You see, I share a plan with my parents. They didn't want to upgrade to smartphones, I had to talk them into it. The way I did this is to tell them that they would each be getting a new device that I would help them learn how to use, and it would only cost about $65 more a month total for all of us; so each of us would be paying $40 per month.
We really could barely squeeze the extra money out of our budget, but the deal was cheaper than just adding two smartphones, or so I thought....
This happened in Lake Stevens, WA

If so, how did you handle it?
I fear that now we will each be out $50 restocking fee since we will have to return the phones and cancel the plan.
Is Verizon obligated to uphold the contract that their employees (even managers) mis represent?

Verizon did the same exact thing to me and my wife as switched from AT&T. 2 separate phone reps from Verizon's sales number assured us the same thing. A third assured me over the phone after we got our phones and were setting them up.
I was assured several times we would get $25 off our line fee and $25 off our device.
3 months later when we get our second bill without all the confusing tax and start-up fee's sure enough, no $25 off our devices.
I asked customer service to review the phone calls with reps and get back with me. The manager told me regardless of what I was told by them and what they listen to they will not give me the credit. So we shall see.
I will wait until next and send a written claim and request for mediation before either filing a smalls claims action action or seeking counsel on a possible class action suit. I am sure there are many deep pocketed class action firms that would love to take Verizon through the ringer. We are not only talking the $25 a month until the phone is paid off, there is bad faith and punitive's plus if you were grandfathered into an indefinite unlimited data plan how much is worth?

Metrics inspector file info has too good of a memory for file names

Hi, I'm working on a technical manual in Pages 09. We decided we wanted to make sure the file names in the metrics inspector's file info section were descriptive of the images' content, as this would make it easier for us to find the original image file for localization. We want the same images, but different file names in the file info. I have not been able to achieve this, no matter what I try. If I delete the image and then insert the new image via drag and drop, Insert->Choose, or from the media browser, the file always has the same name (the original) even though that name is no longer associated in any way that I can see with the file I've just added to the document. Help! I'm going to have to recreate the entire document from scratch just to get the names in file info right! Any assistance would be very gratefully received!

You are right.
It will switch for an entirely different file. But it remembers the name of even a duplicated and renamed file.
It even does it if you open in Preview.app and resave from there.
+However if you make a small edit in Preview, say rescale or slight crop and resave it, it will accept the new name.+
OSX has a very good tracking ability of files, they actually carry an identity number as well as the name, so that when you change its name and/or location it still can find it. This appears to be too persistent in Pages and I'd say is a bug.
Refreshing Permissions and verifying your Hard Drive or relocating the file to an external Hard Drive may trigger a refresh which may fix this.

Sound is too good.

I love the sound quality on the Playbook. The problem is when I want it just one notch above mute...there's no true "low". I have to browse the Sounds & Notifications section to take it a HAIR above zero (because the physical buttons won't let me get that close to zero) and it's still too loud.
I've thought that maybe I can get a MINI external 3.5mm speaker that has a volume rocker on it, but I haven't been able to find a tiny one that has a volume rocker. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Blackberry, PLEASE adjust the gain settings in the next firmware, so that I can get the Playbook working with low volume. THANK YOU.

It's $6.99 at the moment, more than I paid for it originally. But it works well. I use this with my earphones which have a straight connector and then, using this, I get a 90 degree L shaped connector which allows less stress on the headphone jack when inside my case. The volume rocker is a VERY accurate dial. Anyhow, using a straight male to male headphone extension cable to plug into this and the speaker of your choosing, you should be able to max the PlayBook volume and then control the overall volume using the cable I picture above.

Pages '08 is too good for me. Please reduce quality!

I'm finally posting here about it, because I can't keep it in anymore.
Pages '08, dear Apple reps and forum-goers, is too sleek and functions way too much as I'd expect it to do, so that it's actually unexpectedly capable. This is a real problem as I cannot concentrate on the matter at hand, the work, the stuff that I need to get done. The elegant, even sophisticatedly laid out interface and logically arranged, yet easily customizable areas and objects of it are so stunningly efficient and surprisingly, no... amazingly crisp to use, I feel guilty of owning the sexiness of this app. Well, I sure would if I hadn't paid the (very practical) price of seventy-something Euros.
As proof of the unbelievable working capabilities of Pages '08, I was just trying to work on a portfolio, but was constantly and unavoidably, and inevitably, "bugged" by the way Pages '08 makes me feel like I'm playing a game! I just can't keep concentrated when I have to work with such a nicely made program that mentally forces me to passionately talk about it with family and show it off to friends.
I urge anyone in the position to influence the production and design of the (oh so beautifully crafted) Pages application to seize the immeasurable amount of quality that is iWork '08. At least make Pages more windozey, microsoftie wordey -like, with fugly icons and and the necessary crash-factor!
No, seriously, Pages '08 is a dream of a word processing application and just wanted to make sure that my gratefulness would reach out to Apple, however small that chance may be!
Thank you, Apple, for Pages '08, just one more reason to get a Mac!

Avid offer to FCP7 users .... too good to refuse?

Well yes of course I'm going to stay with Final Cut Studio til it don't work no more, which may even be two years away, but we will then need to go to an alternative whether we like it or not!
Why should I wait til then to pay top dollar ($2500) or probably more by then for Avid when I have the opportunity to jump on board for about $1000 now(til September 30th) with their deal for FCP7 users?
Avid may just sit there in my Applications folder doing nothing for a while but it seems to make sense to max out my credit card for much less now than waiting to do it later at more than double the price !
Not looking forward to going through another steep learning curve when the time comes but all things considered, does it make sense for me to jump in here?

Ask yourself these questions....
Does Avid Media Composer do what you need to do to make videos?
Is Avid Media Composer used by people in your specific area of production or post?
Are employers that you might work for using Avid Media Composer? Will you find yourself sitting in front of it soon?
Avid Media Composer is primarily used in broadcast TV and film production, where the final outputs are to tape, film, or high end digital file for broadcast. It has a lot of powerful tools meant to aid those in those production fields. It doesn't come with DVD authoring software (well, it does, but PC only), a graphics application (Like Motion or After Effects), a sound editing application (like Soundtrack Pro or Audition). It does ship with Sorenson Pro, which allows for good quality encodes.
Building effects..and composites...in Avid is difficult and almost impossible. Not nearly as easy as with FCP or Adobe Premiere. So, just make sure that it fulfills your needs. Adobe also has a deal for CS5 for FCP switchers, so see if that does what you need. Or if Avid does. Just have a realistic idea of what you need to accomplish in video production, and look at the tool that best helps you deliver that. Don't get an application because "it is an industry standard" in certain areas. Get the tool that does what you need.

Is ArchLinux Too Good?

I have been using Arch for a number of years but there is a problem ... everything always works perfectly and hence it is boring!
So I was using KDE for many months and nothing ever crashed and always worked perfectly. So to spice things up, I started using other window managers / desktop managers. They all work perfectly as well.
Hmm .. so I try out other distributions (like Ubuntu, Fedora, Puppy, Slax etc etc .. I have tried them all) .. and they seem to crash and have endless problems. So I go back to Arch.
I have tried moving to Testing & Unstable Arch repositories but they would eventually trip me up and I would be stuck
This cycle has now been occurring for 3 years.
What should I do?

"Too many activations" NOT TRUE, please help

How can I activate Indesign? I get a too-many-activations error, but there is no way to deactivate the copy that I am replacing. The Mac it was on went down, and the hard drive is not readable. I installed from the original disc and put in the serial# as requested. There is no option in the app to contact Adobe. When I use the website, I get an endless loop of click-around that ends at contact-support. Click that and it sends me back to the start. This should be a simple phone call with an easy to find number. I eventually found, by accident, the chat feature, but it was and is, unavailable. Please offer some real-world advice on how to get this fixed. I don't really want to go back to Quark...activation

Psu price...to good to be true?

I dont know much about psu's voltage wise, but I do know that for my mobo I need a min of 26a recomended. So I bought a OCZ.
A friend now wants a simular set up to mine , but he wants to use a hyper psu. (see link)

Can´t verify all this myself since I´m running Aspire 520w and Tagan 480w U-22 lines, but I would not hesitate getting a Hiper Type-R 580w ( around $100 in sweden). Seems to be good quality for less money then some other brands.
I've been looking at this psu as well as the 480W hiper R for possable use in systems
