Too hard to use Roto Brush in Tree Branches!

Hi all!
I'm having trouble roto brushing tree branches, it's too difficult, is there any alternative way or color selection option in Roto brush?
Thanks in advance!

Colorama is a plug-in that easily creates a track matte for things like trees against a sky. An additional junk mask and your work should be almost done. Just use the negative preset and then do some tweaking like this:

  • What could cause no propagation using Roto Brush Tool?

Also is it allowed to use masking while using the Roto Brush tool?
Could the arrow colors be exacly the same as the gray of the background?
I have gotten it to work on some other projects.

Unlikely that you could tweak your UI brightness in such a way that it kills both grey tones at the same time, so this is a real issue of sorts. do you see any propagation status updated on teh info plaette? Please check that. If there is propagation, yet it does not show up in the viewer, it may be an issue with your footage. And no, you shouldn't use masks and RB at the same time. It may throw off RB completely. You would have to pre-compose or pre-render the RB layer and work based on that.

  • Using Roto Brush in After Effects CC

When I go to the next frame while rotoscoping, it doesn't allow me to make any adjustments on the following frames? I want to roto each frame bit by bit and get rid of the stuff I don't want but it wont let me do it any ideas? I am using CC if that makes any difference!

This is an instance when having CC shouldn't matter.  Things have remained unchanged for Rotobrush: if you're trying to use it intuitively, you'll fail.  You need to look at documentation and tutorials.  You'll find them when you nose around here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2010/01/getting-started-with-after-eff.html
...and if you're new to AE, you'll need to spend some quality time looking that page over.

  • My ext HDs spin too hard when not in use , how do I slow em up ?

some externals have the smarts about them but others just wizz too hard when not in use , old macs had a processor setting I could change  , but not MBP
I should be able to tell these HDs to chill till I call on them right ?   thanks for any help[ you can offer me .
    cheers R

You don't. You have no control over the spin rate of any hard drive.
To encourage the external drive(s) to spin down when they aren't in use, System Prefs > Energy Saver > check the box for "Spin down hard disks when possible." But you'll find that the OS checks in on those drives quite frequently, spinning them back up again. So the likelihood of their spinning down very often or ever staying quiescent for long is small.

  • Creating that blur using my brush my entire image changes too and becomes blurry. Not only that but the area I painted also becomes over exposed. What can I do am I missing something here all I want is to blur a section and not change the rest of the area

Creating that blur using my brush. When I paint the area, which highlights in red, I bring the clarity down to create more of that blur but what ends up happening is that my entire image changes too and becomes blurry. Not only that but the area I painted also becomes over exposed. What can I do am I missing something here all I want is to blur a section and not change the rest of the area I am painted by automatically becoming over exposed. Does anyone else have this problem that can help me?

Do you think I should try to find a cheap mobo to OC my current CPU?  How about trying to find one (mobo) used?  I fear that my only realistic choice will be to scrap the CPU and eventually buy a new mobo and CPU, but as the CPU was only released just under two years ago I would value being over to overclock it with a cheap enough mobo to last me another year or so.
Who knows what additional problems may be run into by switching mainboards & such. The OS would have to be reinstalled fresh, etc. Money wise, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to invest more into a system that is rather outdated. The small performance gain making the switch to another board using the CPU you have, just doesn't really make much sense, especially if what you have now is completing the tasks asked of it. Save up some money, set it aside for a future build. There are plenty of new platforms in the works.

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8,  the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it.  System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night.  If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1  ,  I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
How large is your application folder?

  • Roto Brush Performance Issues & Seeking Advice.

    Hello everyone,
First time posting in the forum, so I'll make this as painless as I can and hopefully I can get a hand in figuring this out.
Computer is a brand new Mac Book Pro 15in Retina Display.
    - 2.7ghz Intel Core i7 (quad core)
    - 16gb Ram
    - SSD HD
    - NVidia GeForce GT 650m 1024 mb.
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - After Effects 11.0.2.11
The project that I'm working on right now was shot 1080, 24fps. I cut the project in Premier and copied all of the footage to AE for keying and to ad motion graphics. The project is close to 5 minutes in length, when I noticed the project effecting the performance of my computer I created 4 smaller projects.
I'm using the rotobrush to add back in the underside of the brim, a task which, initially, I didn't expect to be such a problem.
No issues at all with keying, so I duplicated the footage, and began roto brushing the brim at full resolution. For the most part, I've been advancing by 10 frames, which I understand will take longer to propagate, however any selection after the render is completely is leaving After Effects almost completely unresponsive for a minute or two.
Not sure what exactly is going on. I just finished a project last week and used the roto brush quite a bit and had absolutely no problems!
I read every article and post I found on the roto brush tool, as well as a handful of AE Optimization articles and videos.
Not sure what else you might need to know from me, but any input or advice would be great.
Also, if there is a better way to handle adding the underside of the brim back in please let me know. I've tried a few different options, and roto brushing seemed to be the best and quickest option until this!
    Thanks a lot!
    -Joe

It's hard to say what is causing the rotobrush show down but there may be an easy work around. Try something like this:
I applied keylight to the footage, selected combined matte to give rotobrush a nice easy area to work in, then pre-composed the keyed footage and used RotoBrush on the layer to select the underside of the hat. I added a white solid behind the rotoed pre-comp and pre composed that to use as a track matte for the original footage. Keylight was also applied to the original footage but was only used to supress color. Here's the AEP. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

  • Paint and Roto Brush Not Working?

Had a few problems since re-installing Windows and AE CS5. Mask tool works, can create masks in layer, but everytime I select Roto Brush or Paint Brush and click into a layer to do something, no luck. Absolutely nothign happens, settings for the brushes are fine, just not being applied to any layer, plain solid or a picture. I am not new to AE, been using it for a long time, but rarely use AE for these features. Any ideas on how I can actually start to paint in AE?

Thanks mate, I realised with the change of workspace, I'm used to the Text workspace as a pose to the one which it was set on I was working in the wrong preview. Also it was auto locking my layer for some reasons, but now that's resolved too. Thanks, you definately helped.

  • Duplicate roto brush effects

    Hi to everyone.
I'm here to ask you if there is any way to duplicate a roto brush effect.
I found many threads with people asking how to copy a roto brush "layer" from a project to another, but I'm talking about duplicate it in the same project.
Long story short, I already have a roto brush effect, made a new layer out of it, and now need to make a new layer with the "inverted selection", but keeping the original "effect layer" too (need to have each single effect layer at the end of the work).
    I'd "settle" for a copy/paste selection too.
    Thanks in advance!
PS. Currently running After Effects CC on Windows 7 Ultimate.

When you have a good pass at a roto then render either an alpha only (there is a preset in the render cue and it's very quick) or render the result and use that for your matte effects. You can then use the rendered footage as a track matte or inverted track matte. EZ as pie.

  • How can I optimize my setup for Roto Brush?

I've been trying to work with Roto Brush and on a 8-second clip and it's painfully slow (about 4-5 seconds to propagate between individual frames).  Adding and subtracting to the mattes take a fair amount of time to refresh too; all said and done I might as well have just painted mattes by hand.
Is this normal?  The demos make it looks so quick and simple...
I'm on a fairly decent machine (Windows 8.1 64-bit, 8-core Xeon, 64GB RAM).  Looking at the task manager it seems it's only using one CPU core while working, but it's not even maxing out that core.
    Thanks for any insight/tips!

That's just how it works. Traditionally, AE can only use 1 thread/core for most temporal operations since they need to be handled linearly and in sequence. Equally traditionally Xeons have a smaller per-core efficiency since they are aimed at parallel processing more than peak performance with TurboBoost as a core(X)i would. Simply not an ideal combination.

  • Roto Brushing

    Hi,
I'm using the roto brush tool for the first time and I've found that it lags considerably when I'm trying to see what the roto brush tool is doing to nearby frames.  I have to wait way too long to see one frame.  Thing is, I think my boss might be willing to upgrade my computer or get me a new one but I need to know exactly what I need if I'm going to approach him about it.
Any thoughts/recomendations on what I should do?  I'm going to be using a lot of the roto brush tool for a project that will be ongoing for a while.
    Thanks,
    Mike

What 64 bit operating system? What kind of footage? Have you gone through the tutorials and the FAQ about Rotobrush? Do you know now to set span? What version of AE right down to the last decimal point?
I have no clue what may be causing this problem. It could be anything from the codec used in the original footage to the size of the footage, to the available ram, to your memory settings, to an out of date version of AE.

  • Why is iCal so much harder to use????

Is it just me...but why does it seem like iCal is way harder to use in Leopard?!?!?! Just look at the number of steps/clicks it takes just to enter an entry.
In month view, you double click on the day, but you can only enter in a title. you have to double click on the new event before you can enter in any details or even a time. And the box that pop-up is a tiny little box. In the old version of ical you could enter in everything in the right hand panel right away.
Then there is viewing events you have to double the event to get a little pop-up in order to see the details of the event. All you had to do before was click on an event and it would display in the side panel. Much much easier and less work.
Does the new ical bother anyone else? or is it just me? it just seems like they rushed it. there's lots of other little annoyances and inconsistencies in it too.

Why is it that I seem to be unable to reply to this post? Well, here goes another try:
I agree: iCal is harder to use. In addition, there seems to have been little or no super-improvement in iCal (etc.) as we move to Leopard. It looks to me as if Apple must have hired tired, clueless (typical) Microsoft programmers to "help" them in this latest development.
I sincerely hope that Steve Jobs gets his broom out and cleans house. The "improvements" in Leopard seem to be salted with Windows-like stupidity and productivity reductions. Is Bill Gates now working in the Apple Human Resources Department?

  • Lenovo G460 - dead pixel, LCD can't be waken up from sleep/ hibernation , very hard to use Touchpad

I got this unit as my birthday present last week. I was very happy about it, as i've been using Dell laptops for the past 6 years of my life, this is the very first time in my life that i'm getting a Lenovo laptop, and i gotta say i'm very disappointed. Friends around me saw me carrying a new Lenovo and they all went " oh my god, that's Lenovo leh !!!", and now i must say "it's no big deal, it's only Lenovo".
after i got this laptop as a present, i'd been quite busy with work and didnt even play with it much. But when i first got my hands on this laptop, i found the touchpad is the hardest one i have ever used in my life. i dont know if it's me or the touchpad itself. Sometimes, the right click doesnt work or the pointer just stalls on the screen for a few seconds no matter how hard i try to move it. Ok, i said it to myself, fine, maybe i got too used to Dell's touchpad, this is a laptop of higher end/ bigger name and it's too hard for me to use. i could get myself an optical mouse. But the nightmare is just about to start !!!
It's labour's day, i got 3 days off work and i started playing this new laptop. After playing around with it for half a day, i left it for shower. After i returned, the display turned off. I tried every way to wake it up and they all went in vain, only a hard power off would do the job. I got online, searched the forum and found that many other users were having the same problem as i had. Ok, read that a BIOS update would solve the problem, though it's not available now. I can be patient and not a crazy **bleep** complaining about it.
just the next day, i woke up from bed, turned on the laptop, as windows 7 was starting up, i suddenly noticed there was a **bleep** dead pixel !!!!! it's so tiny that it could be so hard to see, if it wasnt windows 7 startup screen (all black with some colorful animation at the center) i wouldnt have noticed it !!! I googled on G460 having dead pixel, oh my, i'm certainly not alone !!!
Now that i have sold off my old dell laptop, and had everything set up in this new laptop, and it seems that i need to return this laptop, and certainly i'll have to live my life without a laptop for the next few weeks. I gotta say it again, i'm very disappointed in Lenovo !!!
Now please let me know how do i return this laptop for repair or whatever you call it, as i work on weekdays in singapore and return to malaysia only on weekends, and this laptop was bought in Malaysia. looks like i gotta take a day off just to send this laptop back to lenovo..........what a big let down.
have had so many Dell laptopsand  never had a single tiny problem with them......

I'm banging my head because I can't find a solution to make my arch-install detect an audio CD
I assume that you mean the optical drive. I don't see a /dev/sr0 in /dev
Does it show up with lsblk or parted -l?
Looks like it's a LiteOn drive.
You can play an audio CD.
    mplayer cdda://
    mpv cdda://track[−endtrack][:speed][/device] −−cdrom−device=PATH
An audio CD doesn't have a mountable file system on it.

After 04 months of purchase of iphone 5 the lock button is too hard. At times its not working at all. The phone has been purchased in USA now I'm not getting service in India. After all whats the point in spending so much amount without any service.

The warranty says that Apple may restrict service of an iPhone to the country of sale, and any reliable salesperson will tell you that if you tell them that you plan to use the iPhone in another country. Such service restrictions are common with cellphones and are by no means limited to Apple's phones.
Sorry, but if your iPhone requires service, you will need to send it to someone you know in the US who can get it serviced and then send it back to you.
