Too many albums slows down iTunes?

I've never used iTunes to organize my massive music library, but I want to give it a try.
I don't think in terms of songs.  I think in terms of albums - ripped CDs.  I have over 3,500 physical CDs and FLACs I'm converting to ALAC.
I read some very old forum posts that discussed iTunes bogging down, sometimes hanging or crashing, because someone had "too large" a library.   But those comments I read were several years old, obviously discussing older versions of iTunes.
Assuming that lossy compression is completely out of the question, is a person going to notice iTunes 11.1 responding slowly or hanging with that many lossless albums in his library?  A drag to use?
Without resorting to multiple libraries, how many ALAC albums is "too many" for iTunes?

I think a LARGE PART of what you're dealing with is format...
I have 41,742 songs (3212 albums) and 673 audiobooks in my iTunes library with album art for ALL of it.
It ONLY lags when adding new tracks, and even that's just for a second or two at most.
BUT...
My collection is MP3 (192kpbs maximum) and M4B (128kbps maximum). EVERYTHING comes to 267Gb.
As FLAC or ALAC, you're looking at a substantially larger library that's going to be slower to update...
Updating a 23mb ALAC track's ID3 tags... takes longer than a 4mb MP3.
Updating artwork for an album of ALAC tracks... takes longer than an album of MP3 tracks.
Renaming an album of ALAC tracks...  and so on.
Not being a music professional I don't NEED to have lossless music. I listen to most of my stuff through earbuds while riding. Too much outside noise to really appreciate the nuances of a studio quality rendition of Beethoven's 9th.
If you DO need that quality, the lag is a trade off.

  • Does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

    does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

    31 apps is nothing. I have 130 apps XD. Then again, I'm using an iPhone 4S which has more RAM compared to the 3GS. RAM is everything when it comes to speed. To use the app switcher, press the home button twice quickly and a list of your recently opened apps will appear. Then hold down on any app and all the apps will go to wiggle mode (like they do when you're deleting apps. Now, simply tap on the red icon that appears at the top left corner of any app you don't want running in the background. This will free up RAM and should make your phone faster.

  • Can too many Photos slow down a Mac Pro?

    Hi, I have atleast 100,000 photos on my pc, would this many photos slow down a 2.66GHz quad core mac pro with 6 gigs of memory? thanks

    I have 60,000. I use non-boot drive of course for data. Some people have huge music and video libraries of 2TB spanning 2-3 drives on stripped RAIDs.
    Mac Pro and OS X really likes RAM, and the base for DDR3 8-core is to have 6 DIMMs and I'd go with 6 x 2GB, either Apple or 3rd party RAM, then add 3 x 640GB drives (WD Black Caviar). Stripe two, even if you partition it as 400GB each. http://www.barefeats.com/nehal04.html
    And keep the boot drive to OS and applications primarily.

  • Will having too many apps slow down ur iphone4

    just like the topic says, will it slow the phone down? or drain the battery faster?

    Having apps shouldn't affect anything.
    Using apps will obviously use battery, as will using the phone, the ipod,etc.

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

    How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
    I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

    You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • Too many fonts-slowing up program opening applications

    I do not have Suitcase or similar program on my MAC however I do have a great many fonts-too many.  I understand Suitcase is the way to go and as soon as "Business picks up"…its the next add on.  So what should I do  "Optimizing fonts" as any program loads up takes forever.  How do I make installed fonts inactive.  I did order a font from a third party last year and it came with a program called Linotype Font Explorer.  I think it is like suitcase but it is a German Company and I don't have a clue how to use it or if it is manual or auto.  Any suggestions or is there something on any of my CS4 programs that will help
    Thanks
    GB

    Font Explorer is actually a very nice font manager. The free version has some limitations, though, as far as what versions of OS X it will run in, I think. I use the Windows beta version on my laptop and find it works pretty well, but they haven't put out a regular distribution for Windows users (been "in the pipeline" for a few years with no progress).
    I personally never found anything to like about Suitcase back in the days of Sytem 9 when it was on all the Macs at work. Once a month it would self-corrupt the database and have to be completely rebuilt. Buko will probably be along in a minute or two to tell you to use Font Agent Pro.

  • Too many "Album Only" songs

    In my view, one of the greatest strengths of iTunes is not having to purchase an entire album to get the particular songs one enjoys. This strength is undermined by the "album only" choices that appear all too frequently.
    I've found several album only songs that I would like to purchase and I have not purchased one of the albums. I'm guessing I'm not alone in this behavior. Drop the "album only" idea and you'll certainly make more money from me. Keeping it is only driving me to look elsewhere for the songs.

    This is not controlled by Apple. The most frequent reasons for "album only" songs are the copyright holders are different for this song than the rest of the album & do not want the song sold as an individual track. The copyright holder for all of a specific album, for whatever reason, may have required that a specific track or tracks be sold as "album only". Apple has to abide by what the copyright holders want when it comes to distributing content.

  • Too many albums

    Hi Guys; I have recently downloaded the 32 songs of Puccini: la Boheme (2 CDs). These were originally on a single album named " Puccini: La Bohème (2 CDs)" , but show up on my iTunes Music as 32 albums with one song in each. I checked the album name, it is the same for all of them, how to group all these tunes under the same album?
    many thanks

    The artists have to be all the same. Now I figure the artists are all different right? If so, this is a compilation, simply check the box marked compilation. The actual CD needs to be the same as well, and make certain you have the correct CD 1 and 2 under descriptions.
    Oh and check off the box for a gapless recording as well. Opera with gaps is very odd.

  • Is my ISP slowing down Itune?? or is Itunes getting slow??

    My Itunes downloads are vary slow. The first tv show will be ready in a few seconds, after I watch it the next tv show I download will take a hour or more to be ready to watch. How can I tell if my ISP is slowing it down?? This has been going on for over a week. Seems strange that I get good speeds for the first download and almost no speed later when I download the second TV show. I generally can test my speed at speedtest.net and get over 20Mbs. While getting a slow download from Itunes, my connection still test around 16Mbs. The downloads show that they are going about 1Mbs for the second TV show and 15Mbs earlier for the first TV show. These speed are when nothing else is downloading.
    Is this caused by my ISP. (brighthouse) or is it a Itunes problem?????? How can I find out?

    You can do a speedtest (try something like speedtest.net). I did. I have a fairly good 7 mb/s. But when I try to d/l something from iTunes now, it takes FOR EVER! Never used to. I'm inclined to think that it's a problem with iTunes store, their servers, etc. Very frustrating.

  • Keeping itunes media folder organised slows down itunes

    My itunes became very very slow indeed when I updated to version 9. I looked at self help forums and discovered that it should speed up if I unchecked "keep itunes media folder organised". I did that, and sure enough, itunes was cured.
    Somebody then said that if I re-checked it, then the folder would be re-organised, and everything would be OK. I did this, and it took all night to organise my library (although it wasn't actually 'disorganised'). However itunes had just returned to being glacially slow.
    So why is this happening? I can't find any cure for it, although I suppose one might have been found by now.
    This is on a G4 ibook, 1.42 GHz. It ran itunes 8 with no problem at all. Leopard

    I don't use the feature myself, but it works properly in a test library for me.
    It could possibly be a permissions issue. Different processes in iTunes seem to make use of either the system or the user account for file actions and it is just possible that which has been used in that case has changed. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for details.

  • The Wife has WAY too many duplicate songs in iTunes. How to get rid of them?

    Hello All,
        We bought new computers in April and the Wife is still trying to work out the kinks. Not sure if it's Music Match or iCloud or something else but at least half of the songs listed in iTunes are duplicates. It would take her forever to delete these. First, is there a untility or App that could take care of this task for her? Second, why did this happen and how do I prevent it from happening again?
      Given time to reflect, I am thinking buying either Music Match and/or iCloud (if one or both of these is the cause of the trouble) was a mistake in that it really f-ed up both our playlists (over half the playlists on MY new laptop are from her computer-Can't.Stand.More.80s.Playlists.) and song lists. We have two very divergent music libraries and had NO need to start mixing them up. Yet cross-polinate they did to both the wife's and my near-daily annoyance. All we really needed was the 2T Airport and time machine. Which we have.
    Thanks.

  • Many Queries slowing down performance?

    Hi,
    Our query response time is very bad, sometimes 30min to execute a query!
    I noticed that there have been created a few hundred queries on the respective MultiCube.
    Is the bad performance linked to the number of queries?

  • Too many photos slowing my mac- what do i do?

    i have backed to an external harddrive but when i access this it just lists 1000's of photos in jpeg format- not very user friendly. Also before i cloud came along i already had 100's of pictures in my iphoto library. What do I do? I need to delete some to create space but I am worried that the back up isn't correct. Is buying icloud space enough? do you need to back up i cloud? How do I transfer all my non - photo stream pics to i cloud. Very confused. thanks

    That's not backing up. A back up is a copy of the data on another disk made to be used in the event of a problem with the main library. So, if you have a disk failure, for instance, your data is safe.
    You always always need an up-to-date back up of all your important data.
    What you're doing there is archiving. Taking some data and putting into "long-term-storage" as it were.
    Here's one way to do that with iPhoto:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
    Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
    As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
    You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
    Note: You need to back up of the Library on your internal disk and the archived material as well.

  • Does having multiple media or removable storage drives, slow down iTunes?

    I recently built a gaming PC in the summer and I have since installed iTunes to listen to my music. I transferred all my music from my mac over easily and logged into my itunes successfully. Now, the problem arises when I start iTunes. It takes about 5 seconds for the program to open. Of course this isnt a long time, but my computer opens every other program much faster, including steam, chrome, WMP, etc.  I am more curious as to why iTunes is the only program that does this, more than the loadup time.
    I have tried running it as an administrator, updated all drivers and itunes, etc. I have a feeling it is because I have multiple drives from Daemon tools, as I did not include a CD/DVD drive in my PC because nearly all of my games come from Steam. However, I have three games that I made ISOs of (via USB CD/DVD drive) that i Have mounted on my PC at all times. Anyways, I notice that iTunes allows me to "eject" disk, because it clearly thinks theres a disk in my PC. Is it possible that iTunes is going through my three drives before opening itself to verify it isnt a CD or DVD that should get played?
    My second philopshy is that I have Itunes on drive D, which is a 1tb HDD, while Windows 7 x64 is running on drive C, which is 128gb SSD. Is it because the PC has to switch drives to load iTunes?
    Thanks!
    PS. Before anyone says get a faster computer etc..... my rig is running with i5 3570k @ 3.7 ghz, 16gb RAM and SSDs ( I am able to run ARMA II/ Max Payne 3/ Far Cry 3 on max settings with no problems)
