Too many fonts-slowing up program opening applications

I do not have Suitcase or similar program on my MAC however I do have a great many fonts-too many.  I understand Suitcase is the way to go and as soon as "Business picks up"…its the next add on.  So what should I do  "Optimizing fonts" as any program loads up takes forever.  How do I make installed fonts inactive.  I did order a font from a third party last year and it came with a program called Linotype Font Explorer.  I think it is like suitcase but it is a German Company and I don't have a clue how to use it or if it is manual or auto.  Any suggestions or is there something on any of my CS4 programs that will help
Thanks

Font Explorer is actually a very nice font manager. The free version has some limitations, though, as far as what versions of OS X it will run in, I think. I use the Windows beta version on my laptop and find it works pretty well, but they haven't put out a regular distribution for Windows users (been "in the pipeline" for a few years with no progress).
I personally never found anything to like about Suitcase back in the days of Sytem 9 when it was on all the Macs at work. Once a month it would self-corrupt the database and have to be completely rebuilt. Buko will probably be along in a minute or two to tell you to use Font Agent Pro.

does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

31 apps is nothing. I have 130 apps XD. Then again, I'm using an iPhone 4S which has more RAM compared to the 3GS. RAM is everything when it comes to speed. To use the app switcher, press the home button twice quickly and a list of your recently opened apps will appear. Then hold down on any app and all the apps will go to wiggle mode (like they do when you're deleting apps. Now, simply tap on the red icon that appears at the top left corner of any app you don't want running in the background. This will free up RAM and should make your phone faster.

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

  • How much can too many imports slow inititialization down?

How much can too many imports slow applet inititialization down?
I have seen our company's sorce code for some huge applets they have written. In many, many cases, the imports at the beginning of each file are written something like this...
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.border.*;
import javax.swing.event.*;Only certain portion of these imports are actually used. Does this sort of thing really impact the applets loading speed? I know it will obviously take at least a little longer but will the user even notice?

You are not actually importing the classes, but rather making the names of the classes available.

  • Too many redirects - Safari can't open page - Domainmonster to iWeb problem

I am trying to publish my website made with iWeb - I purchased a domain from Domainmonster.
onlineiwthme.net - and by looking around the web I think I have done the whole CNAME thing correctly.
When I go to my mobile me account summary it says - Personal Domain = www.onlinewithme.net
So I think it should be OK.
I clicked publish in iWeb and it seemed to work but when I try my domain I just get the following message: Safari can’t open the page.
Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://www.onlinewithme.net/”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.

OK I still could net get it sorted so I contacted Domainmonsters help desk and below is the nice clear answer to my problems.
I add it here in case anybody else has problems.
Ethiod, thank you very much for you help, regardless, much appreciated that you at least tried to help.
    Thank you for contacting Domainmonster.com.
    1. Log in to your Domainmonster.com account and choose to manage your domain by highlighting it on the right hand menu and clicking “Manage”.
    2. Choose “Website Content” then click “Web Forwarding”.
    3. Within Web Forwarding set-up non-framed web forwarding to point to www.onlinewithme.net – this will forward the root record (non www.) to the www. address – meaning that either http://onlinewithme.net or http://www.onlinewithme.net will go to the correct location.
    4. Once saved, click on the “ > onlinewithme.net Control Panel” breadcrumb at the top of the page to take you back to your control panel.
    5. Click on “Manage DNS”.
    6. Within DNS settings delete the A Record for www. (check box to the right hand side and then click “save DNS Updates”)
    a. Now add a CNAME Record with the following settings:
    i. Alias: www
    ii. Address: web.me.com
    7. You will now have pointed your www. record to your web.me.com account.
    8. You will need to ensure that your iWeb account is correctly set-up to expect your domain. You can do this by specifying a Personal Domain (www.onlinewithme.net). Apple have provided a tutorial here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1107

  • Installed too many fonts into font book, HELP!!!

    Hello community!
A friend of mine gave me a folder with nearly 3000 fonts. I mistakenly opened my font book, dropped folder onto the app, and voila I thought my new mac had 3000 cool new fonts! Little did i know it seemed to slow down every program and when i tried to pull the folder that my friend gave me with all of the fonts to the trash and empty, it said everything was in use so i couldn't.
When I tried to open the Font Book and delete it there font book just stalls and doesn't respond. One thing i've done so far is start up my computer holding shift (safe mode?). When i did this the folder my friend gave me was no longer on the desktop, and I couldn't seem to open Font Book in that mode. I then restarted and turned my computer back on in safe mode. The good news is it seems my programs aren't trying to use the 3000 fonts, and the folder seemed to have disappeard from my desktop. The bad news is Font Book still wont open, and i can see it is still recognising that the folder exist because it shows up on the side bar before is stops responding. Please help!!!
    -Daniel

The font collection files are probably damaged. If you have a backup, do this:
    1) Boot into Safe Mode.
    2) In your user account, open the ~/Library/FontCollections/ folder (the ~ means your home account, you won't find a folder by that name)
    3) Delete all of the .collection files.
    4) Copy all of the same files from your backup into the folder.
    5) Restart
If you don't have a backup, you can still just delete all of the .collection files. They have no special purpose. They're just the default sets OS X installs, and none of them are necessary for OS X or Font Book to operate.
If you prefer, move the .collection files to the desktop, then launch Font Book. If it works as expected, then one or more of those files are damaged. You can try putting them back one at a time (shutting down Font Book each time, putting one back, then launching again to test). When Font Book balks, the last one you put back is junk.

  • When I close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete, I want to start over on Firefox, I usually do this when too many tabs and windows are open. However, Firefox always restores the tabs and windows I previously had. How can I stop that from happening?

This happens when FireFox is not responding, and I want to close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete. Too many tabs can make Firefox crash. That is why I want to use ctrl-alt-delete to close FireFox. I tried finding a way to disable this, but I found no option to.

Ending the Firefox program or process with the Windows Task Manager "looks like" a crash. The proper way to exit Firefox is click Firefox button > Exit (or File > Exit, if using the Menu Bar).

  • Can too many Photos slow down a Mac Pro?

Hi, I have atleast 100,000 photos on my pc, would this many photos slow down a 2.66GHz quad core mac pro with 6 gigs of memory? thanks

I have 60,000. I use non-boot drive of course for data. Some people have huge music and video libraries of 2TB spanning 2-3 drives on stripped RAIDs.
Mac Pro and OS X really likes RAM, and the base for DDR3 8-core is to have 6 DIMMs and I'd go with 6 x 2GB, either Apple or 3rd party RAM, then add 3 x 640GB drives (WD Black Caviar). Stripe two, even if you partition it as 400GB each. http://www.barefeats.com/nehal04.html
And keep the boot drive to OS and applications primarily.

  • Too many albums slows down iTunes?

I've never used iTunes to organize my massive music library, but I want to give it a try.
I don't think in terms of songs.  I think in terms of albums - ripped CDs.  I have over 3,500 physical CDs and FLACs I'm converting to ALAC.
I read some very old forum posts that discussed iTunes bogging down, sometimes hanging or crashing, because someone had "too large" a library.   But those comments I read were several years old, obviously discussing older versions of iTunes.
Assuming that lossy compression is completely out of the question, is a person going to notice iTunes 11.1 responding slowly or hanging with that many lossless albums in his library?  A drag to use?
Without resorting to multiple libraries, how many ALAC albums is "too many" for iTunes?

I think a LARGE PART of what you're dealing with is format...
I have 41,742 songs (3212 albums) and 673 audiobooks in my iTunes library with album art for ALL of it.
It ONLY lags when adding new tracks, and even that's just for a second or two at most.
    BUT...
My collection is MP3 (192kpbs maximum) and M4B (128kbps maximum). EVERYTHING comes to 267Gb.
As FLAC or ALAC, you're looking at a substantially larger library that's going to be slower to update...
    Updating a 23mb ALAC track's ID3 tags... takes longer than a 4mb MP3.
Updating artwork for an album of ALAC tracks... takes longer than an album of MP3 tracks.
Renaming an album of ALAC tracks...  and so on.
Not being a music professional I don't NEED to have lossless music. I listen to most of my stuff through earbuds while riding. Too much outside noise to really appreciate the nuances of a studio quality rendition of Beethoven's 9th.
If you DO need that quality, the lag is a trade off.

  • New Computer, but Adobe is telling me too many are using the program

  • AI CS5 Font handling, how many are too many fonts.  I have 14000 fonts

Since I installed a font pack that I purchased, Adobe is sluggish...opening, saving files, closing files...getting a lot of "not responding" and then it returns to working condition.  I can select text, right click, but clicking Fonts does nothing.  Is there a setting I can change or am I stuck having to unistall fonts.

I like to have lots of choices.
So do I. But I still don't like having to plunder through every piece of fabric in the house in order to find a matching pair of socks. I also can never seem to have enough motorcycle tools, but I sure don't throw them all into a single tool bag, either.
Anyone who likes to collect a ridiculous number of fonts (as do I) should organize them so it doesn't take three forevers to find a suitable one. Regardless of performance, you should be using a font manager that lets you organize them into stylistic groups, and/or groups for particluar projects.
I've been using Bitstream Font Navigator (comes bundled with Corel Draw) on Windows for many years without much trouble. I do sometimes find it more reliable to quit and restart Illustrator when using BFN, but it's usually not necessary.

  • Too Many Fonts

I use InDesign 3 in Windows XP.
My work requires very few font families, but my Windows fonts folder bulges with True Type stuff that I don't need. I created a "fonts xtra" folder and moved the cutesy stuff there, and then copied what I thought was the "lean and mean" to the fonts folder in Adobe/InDesign. Everything is still there!
If I have to, I can delete TT fonts, but the more appropriate solution seems to be to designate those fonts I need for use in InDesign.
I'm missing something here and would appreciate advice.
    Thanks very much...
    Joe Strapac

    I'm missing something here ...
You are not missing something. The Adobe programs don't do their own font management -- they use everything the system provides. In addition, you can place fonts into the folders InDesign/Fonts, Illustrator/Fonts and PhotoShop/Fonts, making them available in each separate program, or, even, in the folder \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts, which makes them available to all (recent) Adobe applications.
    It all adds up.
If you really have a lot of fonts -- much more than the 930 currently on my system (which I don't consider "a lot") --, you may have (perhaps accidentally) copied some font cd. Try sorting your Windows/Fonts folder by "Modified" date; you should see Windows stuff grouped together in a lump, and the dregs into another.

  • Too many photos slowing my mac- what do i do?

i have backed to an external harddrive but when i access this it just lists 1000's of photos in jpeg format- not very user friendly. Also before i cloud came along i already had 100's of pictures in my iphoto library. What do I do? I need to delete some to create space but I am worried that the back up isn't correct. Is buying icloud space enough? do you need to back up i cloud? How do I transfer all my non - photo stream pics to i cloud. Very confused. thanks

That's not backing up. A back up is a copy of the data on another disk made to be used in the event of a problem with the main library. So, if you have a disk failure, for instance, your data is safe.
You always always need an up-to-date back up of all your important data.
What you're doing there is archiving. Taking some data and putting into "long-term-storage" as it were.
Here's one way to do that with iPhoto:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
Note: You need to back up of the Library on your internal disk and the archived material as well.

  • I've had a few (too many) apps that will not open, sometimes giving Error -1712. In one case it was TextEdit, the others are ones I've recently downloaded.

I've done some basic troubleshooting: repair permissions; trash and reinstall app; restart the iMac. I recently had the Apple Store reinstall OS X 10.9.2 (after I couldn't get any installers to work). That fixed that problem, but now this.

    Hi Suzy Q,
I can send and receive calls.
I get "messaging stopped" when doing a lot of texts.
Texts come up "ghosted" meaning they have the text on the bottom and a transparent one overlaid  on top. they then become one. But I get the ghosting most of the time when I go into a message from a contact to send a text.
When I go to call logs or text logs, the numbers come up first, and then then the names pop up randomly, meaning not in order down the page, until they are all shown. lots of lag time.
    It runs slow.
I have 5 apps on here. I should be able to have a  lot of apps on here, and play music, and have files, and...and....and.
I can get online but doing a Google search, when the page with the choices comes up, it is blurred and I have to tap on the screen for it to become clear and readable.
When online and scrolling, it hitches sometimes/lags/gets stuck then unstuck
I get VZWAVS has stopped. (not sure if those are the right letters)
The status bar that is supposed to be gray with the new update, goes back and forth between green--the old os--to gray. And I have found no continuity with when I get green or when I get gray.
I get a black screen on occasion.
sometimes the proximity sensor doesn't work.
sometimes when I have my bluetooth on and have "hands free mode" on, I get the a text message read through the headset and also through the handset.
