Too many force quits!
Something's wrong with my OS. Too many programmes fail to launch. iTunes, system preferences etc..
What's the best way to fix? Is it a full reinitialise and rebuild or can I simply reload the Snow Leopard DVD??
Thanks for an advice...
It's hard to say what the best approach is without more info, but certainly reinstalling is an option. You can try reinstalling over the current system - just be sure to update everything afterward - but depending on where the problem is, that may not help.

I am getting too many Force Quit/SBOD responses for too long. Why?
What can I do to fix it? I have been through trash cache, repair permissions, verify disk and trash Safari cache. Can I avoid reinstall system?Hello Arthur,
It would help readers to assist you, if you would post some additional information.
For example,
What size is your Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
As Jeff Kelleher asked, which applications are affected?
Here are some additional help resources.

many times it happnes that even I had closed the application window it keep running on backend and I have to manualy close it again by going in 'forced quit'.. any solution....
Closing the window doesn't quit the application on Mac like it does in Windows. You have to select Quit (Program Name) from the top menu or use the keyboard shortcut Command + Q

While pasting event description into iCal, accidently pasted too much text, causing "The server responded with an error" pop up. This pop us includes the event description, but because of the mass amount of text, the window shoots off the screen to the bottom, so if there was an exit red "x" available, it isn't visible or accessible. The iCal>preferences is greyed out and I have force quit and it pops up each time I use iCal. Is this even fixable?
I can see that this issue has been quite extensive, and frustrating, and I am so sorry for all that has happened societygirl! I would like to help you work this issue out. Please follow & send me a Direct Message, so I can get your account specifics and help finally bring this to a resolution.
Thank you,

10.5.3 won't Shut Down too often and have to Force Quit!
Right after 10.5.3 update, my iMac 24" often won't Shut Down at all, forcing me to use the ON/OFF button. Software that used to work fine like Firefox 2.00.14, PowerPoint 10.1.9, and You Synchronize 2.1.1 now lock up often and can't be Force Quit when they become unresponsive like before. This pretty much means the machine won't shut down either.
I've repaired permissions and all of the hard drives checked out fine. Any idea how to correct these unpleasant problems? After further investigation it seems to be related (at least in my case) to a bug that affects firefox and 10.5.3 update.

I have an email that I was trying to send, but now I want to stop it. I tried to force quite & re-booting, but it continues to try and send it. Sent mail shows 1 outstanding, but no message shows when I click on it. What do I do?
Ah, never mind. Looks like the problem finally resolved itself. Not sure exactly how, but it seems OK now.

IPhoto doesn't update to modified pics after force quit
iPhoto didn't respond to my 'quit' command, so I chose to +force quit+ it. Before I did so, iPhoto had a problem connecting to Facebook, which seemed to cause iPhoto not being able to quit (this happened to me several times recently, and I always had to end up force quitting iPhoto). Every time I clicked on an album under FACEBOOK on the left column of the iPhoto application window, an error message came up saying +"Facebook authentication with server failed. Please check your login and password information."+ I thought perhaps stopping iPhoto from syncing with Facebook would help, so I +removed my Facebook account from iPhoto+, in an attempt to set up the connection again where I would re-enter my login and password information.
However, after this, when I clicked on a photo and then clicked the Facebook botton on the bottom right corner, then clicked *Set Up* in the message box to +set up iPhoto to publish to Facebook+, the Facebook login box never completed loading (it was all white and plank besides the loading bar on the bottom which never exceeded loading more than about 12%). I waited for more than half an hour and the loading didn't process any longer, so I closed the box. I tried this for several times in the next few hours and the same loading problem came up each time.
In the mean while, the Faces under LIBRARY in iPhoto had an +updating circle+ next to it which seemed never able to end the search. So I did some search over the Internet to find solutions to the problem, and came across with this: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2444899_.
The problems now were that 1) iPhoto could not load me to the Facebook login page for me to re-enter my Facebook information for iPhoto; and 2) iPhoto could not quit.
Because the solution posed on the above link has a first step of "quit iPhoto", so I force quitted iPhoto and followed the 1) to 6) processes stated in that thread (i.e.: removed ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist to trash; deleted iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access; restarted computer; and launched iPhoto again).
This time I could come to the Facebook login page on iPhoto, and quit iPhoto for no problem. However, I now find that some of the pictures I edited within iPhoto before force quitting do not show the modified versions when I open them, even though the +modified versions+ are shown in thumbnails and they can be located in +iPhoto library+ (~/iPhoto Library/Modified/year*/album name/picture name*). The other weird thing is - the problem does not occur to all photos I edited before force quitting (e.g. for two photos I edited one after another, one has the problem and the other does not).
I did some search over the Internet before posting this message, and found one to be a possible solution to my problem: _http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2771968&tstart=15_
Nevertheless, I'm a bit resistent to downloading +iPhoto Library Manager+ in thinking of the down sides of doing so, if there are any. What would be the best way to solve my current problem? How could I get iPhoto to recognize and link to the modified photos instead of the original files? By the way, I did not have this problem before force quitting iPhoto.
Thank you in advance for all your inputs!i'd like to keep all modified files because it took me quite some work to edit the pictures
Then recover them from the damaged Library and import them to the new one. That said, remember they will be treated as "new" photos, not as edited versions of the others. There is no way to recreate that link.
1) Would it be bad for me to keep working with my old iPhoto library?
This library is corrupted. It is known to be damaged. The chances of dataloss are greatly increased. You will have more problems. Personally, I wouldn't.
2) How to *back up*? And I assume it should be conducted regularly?
*Most Simple Back Up:*
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
*Slightly more complex:*
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
*I'm Serious about Back Ups.* +And you should be too.+
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
3) Should I un-do the removal of ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist, as well as the delete of iphoto.apple.com inside Keychain Access?
No.
Regards
TD

I have a 5 month old iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.
Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

My Bridge CC opens in a locked mode - I cannot make any changes (dump cache) - it says "other instances of Adobe Application Manager are running, which must be closed." I have to force quit Bridge to get out of it. I tried to uninstall Bridge and re-install it but it did the same thing. Any ideas where to go next?
The fact that I uninstalled Bridge and reloaded it has me concerned as to what to do next.?You need to force quit all other (real or fake) instances of the Application Manager. Instructions differ between Mac or Win.
A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

Every time I open the app store on my iPod touch, it says 'too many http redirects' whenever I click on the Categories and Top 25 tabs. I tried force quitting the app store, that didn't work. I tried closing all windows in Safari and force quitting safari, also didn't work. I reset the network settings, that didn't work either. When I reset all settings, it appeared to work. The tabs were different (it had a Genius tab), but it worked. However, immediately after force quitting the app store (I force quit a lot to keep as much RAM clear as possible), the same thing happened again. Does anyone know a permanent, Apple-supported solution to this problem? And please do not say restoring it. I don't want to start from scratch just to potentially experience the same problem.
See:
to many HTTP redirects: Apple Support Communities
However, it seems to be an Apple/network problem beyond your control -
I have been kinda irritated with the following problem which is happening quite often:
When I use Safari to surf, sometimes as it tries to download some videos or pdf files, it hangs and I can see the beach ball rotating indefinitely.
I cannot force quit because the cursor remained as a rotating beach ball & refused to turn into an arrow so I cannot point it to the apple icon to force quit.
Then I tried to press Option-Command-Esc simultaneously but the Force Quit dialog panel refuse to come out despite pressing Option-Command-Esc a thousand times !!
These Option-Command-Esc method only works for me like 5% of the time, in the sense that only 5% of the time the Force Quit dialog appears upon pressing Option-Command-Esc.
Because of this beach ball indefinite rotation & not being able to force quit, I am left with no choice but to turn off & on the computer again !!
Why is the Option-Command-Esc in Mac so unreliable as compared to Control-Alt-Delete in Windows ?
Is there some setting I missed out ?

If you can't perform the force quit action using the key combination
can you do it by the apple menu?if this method works. Your problem could be Keyboard or Keyboard settings
Suggestions:
1. go to keyboard and mouse pane in system preferences. Then keyboard shortcuts
below you will see restore defaults. Try it again if this does not work
2.Go to International pane in system preferences. Then input menu. Tick keyboard viewer. tick also show input menu in menu bar. Click the flag then show the keyboard viewer
Verify if those keys are being registered into the screen. You may have a faulty keyboard
Thanks kisuke3,
Now my Mac cannot start up. It hangs at the blue screen satge. Probably bcos to too many power turn-off due to the force quit not working ... sigh ...
Will come to this once I solve the start-up issue.
Will post the start up problem in another thread.

Just too many problems, iMovie, iDVD
After working with the same project for the past 2 weeks and getting nowhere, I finally gave up in total frustration and deleted the entire project, one piece at a time. I spent the last hour today starting at, 10:45 Am Alaska time and tracked down every piece of my project, iMovie and iDVD and deleted the whole shebang. Problems kept happening over and over and each time, were getting worse than the last time.
This time, iDVD froze up. It did it last night and again today. After waiting for 9 hours over night, and again 5 hours today for it to finish encoding and to finally burn the project, I ended up doing a "force quit", because iDVD wasn't responding at all. It was highlighted in red on force quit, with the words, ("iDVD not responding") in parenthesis. This told me that the program was locked and would not be able to complete the assigned project, so I force quitted the project and scrapped the entire thing.
Now I'm forced to make another decision. Do I go on and re-enter the video into my computer and start over? Or, do I just say forget it and trash the entire idea of producing an DVD from my video footage all together? I'm ****** off and frustrated at how poorly this new and expensive program is not operating like it was designed and supposed to do. Why did I spend all that money, for a program that doesn't work the way it was designed to? Is anyone else feeling the way I do right now?
Froglips from AlaskaYour not alone. I just spent over a week trying to
burn a project. I have a new iMac and the latest
iLife.....thought I'd be set for awhile however while
trying many different possible solutions for my
problem have spent the last week dancing around
iMovie bugs, iDVD bugs and Quicktime bugs forcing me
to do "workarounds" which take extra time again. I
like alot of things about Apple however people pay
for a workable product and iLife should not cause
people this much pain. I've used software that is 98%
bug-free so I know it can be done but Apple does'nt
seem to be willing to test its software thouroughly
enough on a wide variety of systems and different
circumstances to eliminate the bugs....and so we
....its faithful followers end up being its
"bug-testers". Perhaps it also has to do with the
desire to "pump-out" new versions every 9-16 months
however I would much prefer to wait longer and even
pay reasonably more for a new version that worked
properly. I want a company and software that is
usable, reliable and responsive to its customers.
This is the kind of company I'd be willing to be
faithful to. I've noticed that Apple has a tendency
to either be non-responsive alot of the time to
problems brought up in these forums or to deny that
problems exist. (It's hubris).Thats why sometimes a
new version of iMovie will carry over some bugs from
a previous version. Of course the right way to handle
this would be to acknowledge the problems , then do
everything you can to make sure they dont come up
again. After doing some testing myself between iMovie
2 and iMovie 5......I find iMovie 2 to still be the
fastest and most reliable version however it does"nt
have the "extras" that version 5 has. Instead of
building on the firm foundation of iM2 ....the
foundation was ripped up and we got the disasterous
iMovie 3.(To be fair...iM4 and 5 are at least better
than 3). When phoning Apple Support for assistance
with my latest problem .......my "helper" was trying
to tell me that my Mac was"nt capable of burning a
DVD over 1 hour . I ended up having to read some
passages out of the "Missing Manual" to convince him
otherwise. Apple often tends to say that the people
in these forums only represent a small percentage of
all its users ....tending to dismiss the
problems.......however its also true that only a
fraction of the people having problems come to these
forums for help. Alot more struggle on their
own....ask other people.....or just give up and move
on to some other software that works. As I said
earlier...I'm generally a fan of Apple.....but they
really should wake up and test their products
thouroughly before releasing. I have Final Cut
Express but I like the beauty in the simplicity and
ease of use of iLife. iLife is a great
concept............if only it worked properly.
Having said my say.......all I can suggest is that
if you persist and keep trying different possible
solutions found in this forum, theres a good chance
you'll eventually work it out (as I did). Only you
know if its worth the effort. Good luck.
Thanks Mr. Thompson, for your input. I agree completely with many of the things you said. I too, am a fan of Apple products, the computers especially. But that entheusiasm I once had about them has diminished considerably in light of the problems that seem to be ongoing. I finally gave up completely on the project that I was trying to edit, and I deleted the whole project. Right now I'm trying to decide if it will be worth the effort and time, to reenter my video and try again. I commend you for your diligence and willingness to keep trying and thank you for encouraging me to keep trying, but for now I'll take a break and rest on it before I decide what to do next. -
I have a problem with iPad2, apple logo appears but iPad won't boot up, then logo disappears & iPad dies - probably caused due to insufficient hard disk space (foolishly loaded up too many apps) - any help/advice greatly appreciated

My cursor has frozen on a word document - how can I unfreeze it without closing or force quitting Word? I am a writer and have multiple documents going at any one time - I think this may be partly the cause for the freeze. I would rather not force quit because there are too many documents that may have been added to that weren't saved. Im not so keen on the auto recovery process Please help!! Aussie OSX 10.8.5 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3.
If you click outside a Word document, is the cursor movement normal? And if you select Force Quit does the tag next to Word say "Not Responding"?
I'm afraid that the only way to get out of your predicament is to Force Quit Word. If you had auto-save on, you may or may not be able to recover some of your documents. I sometimes have up to 12 Word documents or so loaded at one time, so your problem shouldn't be put down to you having multiple documents open.
Sorry that I couldn't really help - I just don't see any way of getting out of your predicament. You MAY want to try pressing the command and period keys at the same time, but I really don't think that will stop anything.

I can't read my gmail by way of mail.google.com. It goes to my inbox for a split second then goes to a page that says "Safari can't open the page" followed by "Too many redirects occurred trying to open…….". This happens whether I go to mail.google.com or google.com and log in then try to go open gmail. I can't check either of my gmail accounts. I reset Safari yesterday and that didn't fix. I have also had to force quit Safari several times in the last 24 hours. I have to use Firefox to read my mail.

IIn the past the find my iPhone has never failed. It has always been within feet of locating my devices. One day I couldn't locate my phone so I pulled up the app and the map showed my phone was where I was, at home, but my iPad-which was in my hand,
