Too many hard drives?

I'm experiencing a growing problem, and that's that I'm getting too many hard drives. I originally bought a 250GB drive, then added a 400GB drive, and lastly I got a 100GB bus powered drive for portability. But now I need another drive for media and render files. The problem comes when I've run out of power outlets, and only see that issue getting worse. I was thinking of getting something that will let me expand my storage as my needs grow, without needed added power supplies. Basically I need an enclosure that I would plop extra drive in as I need them, does anyone know of such a thing? I've looked but the devices I've found aren't really what I had in mind.
Thanks,
-Brian

hey Brian
sounds like you need to do some Media Management. although others may be using considerably more, 750GB is still a fair chunk of drive space.
do you regularly backup finished projects to tape, archive projects and non-timecode related media to DVD, clear off no longer needed media?
this isn't a bad intro to project and media management:
http://larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_archive.html
regarding the, pop in another drive idea. do you actually need the old drive and media to still be available? if not, an oft used technique these days is to use a FW or SATA disc enclosure ... if you budget in the cost of the disc with each job, then each new job or client can get there own hard disc, when the job is done you pop out the disc and put it on the shelf, and then simply replace with a new disc in the enclosure. these days disc space is dirt cheap.
hope it helps

  • How many hard drives should i get to get the most out of premiere on my laptop?

    Hello,
I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro Late 2013 with 512gb ssd, 16gb ram and 2gb 750m graphics card. I was wondering how many external hard drives i should get to get the best results in Premiere Pro and After Effects. I'm thinking about buying a smallish portable hard drive for cache and another for media. How many hard drives do you think i should get, what size they should be and how it would improve Premiere and After Effects please.
    Thanks Heaps

I agree with JFP...above.  But if you have a USB3 interface on that MacBook, you can also try using it as I have on my PC laptop
For simplicity on my PC laptop I would just go with a fast USB3 flash drive for the project and media files.  I have several PNY Turbo USB3 128GB units and have recently edited a 1-hour long three AVCHD camera shoot (not multicam mode) with perfect ease.  That way you do not have power cables from hard drives.  I suspect that the new SanDisk Extreme Pro will match those speeds below but at a much higher cost ($140 versus $50).  Never believe the manufacturers speed claims here are real achievable results on the PNY.
That read speed is better than most hard disk drives as it does not fall off as the storage device gets full, and the access time is significantly better despite significant USB overhead.

  • How many hard drives can fit in a x120e?

Hello, how many hard drives can fit? I'd like to keep the included hard drive but also add a small ~30GB SDD to host Windows on. Is this possible or is there only one free SATA port?

Oh, there's an mPCIe slot? Will this work/fit along the standard HDD?

  • How many Hard Drives ?

I've been fortunate to receive a PowerMac G4 733mhz (Digital Audio) along with a Sony 20" CRT monitor at no cost and I'm looking to get all the performance that I can out of it.
So far I've maxed out the RAM and added an iogear USB 2.0 card along with a SIIG Utra ATA 133/100 Pro controller card. The Radeon 9800 pro video card is a couple weeks away yet.
I now have a 160gb and a 60gb as master/slave on the main board, and another 160gb on the controller card in which I'm adding another 80gb to tonight.
I am wondering how many hard drives I can add before I have to start worrying about the power supply. Keep in mind that I'm going to be adding the video card in the future.
I also see that SIIG card says OSX 10.1 or later, does this mean that I cannot connect a drive that boots into OS 9 to the card? Or a drive that may have Yellow Dog Linux?
Thanks, I'd appreciate any input about this new project of mine.

    Hi-
OK, let's talk power.... This is what we have to work with (may be slightly higher depending on PSU model):
    DA 338W PSU
    +5V=20A
    +3.3V=24A
    +28V=4.04A
    +12V=8A
    -12V=0.25A
    Total on combined +3.3V and +5V =126W @32A
Of course, there is a big difference between idle and load power consumption, but I will list maximum power consumption values. Various requirements are:
ATA/100 Hard drive- Read/Write, approx. 12.8W [email protected], [email protected]
Optical Drive- Full Speed (42x) read, approx. 5.6W [email protected], 15.7W [email protected]
Memory (per 512mb DIMM) 1-3W combined 3.3V,+5V,[email protected]
PCI and AGP slots combined max +3.3V, +5V=62W, AGP (only) up to 20W
    Firewire Bus 15W+25V
    USB Bus 5v@500mA per port
    733mhz PPC processor 1.6V 15.6W (Idle) 22.0W (load)
    Fans (combined) +12V [email protected]
As for the Radeon 9800 Pro, under full load, the power requirements are:
    +5V [email protected]
    +12V [email protected]
    +3.3V(AGP) [email protected]
    +5V (AGP) [email protected]
    +12V (AGP) [email protected]
Points to consider (no particular order):
-An ATA hard drive at idle, will still pull 7.2W and at Standby, will pull 1.4W.
-Unless you are running 2 RAID sets, you would rarely, if ever, have 4 drives simultaneously in Read/Write.
-One process that will push a system to the max is disc burning. Consider CPU at load, one, possibly two hard drives at Read/Write load, and the Optical drive at load. (For all who care, this is why we don't multi-task during burning). Without multi-tasking, the graphics power draw is minimal.
-Weak point of early ATX PSU revisions was the 12V rail. The G4 PSU also has a weak +12V rail (only 8A).
(Run a dual internal RAID, and try to burn a disc..... well, you better set the machine up as a headless server.....)
-Total combined +3.3V, +5V wattage and ampherage is sufficient for most fully loaded system and bus combinations.
-The power requirements of the 9800 Pro are all within the maximum limits of the various voltage rails of the OEM PSU.
-A 237W PSU equipped Sawtooth will run without problems with two hard drives (one system, one storage), a 2.0ghz 7447 processor, USB 2.0 PCI, Radeon 9800 Pro and AC VGA fan. Additional hard drive (scratch drive), PCI cards, HDD fans and lighting overload the +12v rail for operation at load with disc burning. (we're talking about real life experience here...)
-Hard drives are heat producers, and an external firewire connected housing can allow for better overall system operation by reducing interior clutter and heat production.
-High interior temperatures reduce the ability of the PSU to cool itself, and thereby reduce it's ability to produce reliable power under load, in the heat.
-Old ATA hard drives are power hogs and hot in comparison to current SATA drives. Switching to two larger SATA drives will reduce load requirements by 3-4W per drive, as well as reduce heat production. Required use off a SATA PCI controller card eliminates the capacity restriction of the native ATA controller. Switching to SATA saves space, power, and cooling needs.
-And, final (random) thought to consider, a dual 500mhz Gigabit Ethernet (same PSU as the DA) will run two ATA drives simultaneously, burn a DVD, with a 9800 Pro installed, without any problems whatsoever. The same machine will run 3D graphics intensive games at enjoyable framerates, without problem. Internet video, on line games, etc., are all enjoyable, with reasonable performance for the given CPU speed. All uses of the machine are without problem, with the added graphics benefit provided by the 9800 Pro (Yep, another real life experience).
    Now, you decide....

  • How many Hard Drives can a G4 DA Support?

Hi. I'm putting an old G4 466MHz Digital Audio to use as a file server but I want to make sure I don't over strain the power supply or something worse.
I currently have a Sonnet Tempo SATA card in one PCI slot running 2 hard drives (1.5tb and 160gb) as well as two IDE hard drives of 80gb. The book disk is one of the SATAs.
Would I be able to fit as many as 8 hard drives (2 per card x 4 cards) or would that be too much of a drain? Would it help if one of the IDE drives was used as the boot disk leaving all the SATAs for storage or would that make no difference?
    Thanks.

    Hi-
4 drives is all that the machine was meant to use.
One might squeeze another drive or two in, but more than power, the heat of the drives will probably be the problem.
Overheating a PSU makes reliable power production more difficult, and with multiple drives demanding that power, the problem compounds quickly.
It doesn't matter native ATA or SATA.
    All the drives pull power.
Go all SATA, and use 1.0 TB drives (or bigger) and you won't need 8 drives......

  • IMac G5 many hard drive errors

While my G5 was sleeping, a power outage occurred at my home, leaving my iMac un-bootable. Every attempt goes to the gray screen with the spinning "gear" and will either immediately shut down, or will hang there while the fan runs at full speed until it is forcefully shut down.
It will not boot to safe-mode, but will into single-user, however the fsck check gave input/ output error.
I can boot into the Leopard disk, but every attempt at either verifying or repairing the hard disk fails with different reasons. The "upgrade" install option seems to not be available, which would be ideal because the existing data on the hard drive and the inability is the sole reason I do not just clean re-install.
Back-ups through Disk Utility and Terminal from the install DVD fail due to errors. Other back-up programs (Diskwarrior etc.) are of no help because of the fact that I cannot boot properly.
My last option is Target disk mode, but I'm starting to have little faith that that will even work with all of the errors I'm receiving. If anyone feels that it will be my solution, I will go out and buy a cord for it.
I'm just posting this because I have seen no possible solution to the many errors I'm receiving. All and all, my goal is to acquire some of the data from the hard drive before erasing it and re-installing leopard. Any help will be VERY appreciated.
    Thank you all

    Hi, Gavin Race
welcome, and sorry to hear your problems.
It looks as if you HD is fried. This might be its electronics (i.e. of the HD device, not of the Logic board), but in any case it is likely that (most of) the data are still on it and can be salvaged.
What i probably would would try to do, is as follows:
get a new HD. unmount the actual one which is probably damaged.
try to get the iMac back running.
once you have it running, you can try to salvage the info on your damaged disk.
Alternatively you can try to get an enclosure for the HD (which makes a kind of external disk from it) and try to read its contents through another Macintosh.
    Hope this helps.

Hi a newbie to all this ive got a 500gb external hd and running out of space but am looking to buy a 1tb but i want to set it up as im using both hard drives so i get 1.5tb as this is a cheaper option for me is this possible and how
    many thanks for your time

You need to turn off the option to copy content to the iTunes folder in iTunes preferences, then when you add new content to iTunes you will need to place the content on one of the HDDs and then drag and drop it onto iTunes from a finder window.
Or you can alternatively leave the "Copy" option on and simply press the Alt-key when dragging and dropping content to momentarily suspend the "Copy" of the dragged content to the library. (I.e., iTunes will gladly manage both copied and non-copied content as long as you do not move or delete the non-copied files at the Finder level after adding them to the iTunes database.)

  • Why Am I Having to Make Way Too Many Hard Restarts?

Over the past couple of weeks, my wife and I have managed to lock up one or more programs to the point that it is necessary to shut down the computer using the power switch. The latest examples involve editing existing MS Word 2008 files in compatibility mode, but last week it was iTunes and I forget what other program.
I switched to the Mac because Windows kept doing this sort of thing ...

    (1) We first noticed the problem after we had purchased a game called "Bejeweled 2".
If it was me and I had a full backup prior to the installation of the game, I would restore to that point.
I moved the game program to the trash,
Moving the program to the trash does not delete the program. Everything is still on your hard disk and if something in that game is causing the hang, that piece of code is still on your computer.
If the game has an "Uninstall" option on the install disk or in the downloaded DMG, I suggest running the Uninstall.
    Firmware updates?
Normally those will come up in the Software Update window. Once in a while I log into http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ then do a search on "Firmware" and my machine ID (Like iMac or MacBook Pro).
I just noticed that my external LaCie 1 GB drive,
I lost mine a few weeks ago as well. Odd. Shut down, unplug the drive, restart, then open Disk Utility. With Disk Utility running in the front window, plug in the LaCie drive and attempt to mount it.
Mine would not come back up so I reformatted it - using the GUID option - and it has been running flawlessly ever since.
Following is over the top, totally unnecessary OCD behavior of a nut who wants everything perfect. Feel free to totally ignore everything that follows.
I started managing networks and supporting individual PCs back in the 1980s. I developed some odd habits. One thing I learned with DOS and Windows computers was that it was often easier to start over than to spend weeks chasing a problem. Once I moved to Macs, I kept my old habits.
You probably do not want to copy my example, but here is what I do:
1.) When I buy a new computer, I transfer the OS installation disks to an external hard disk using the Restore function of disk utility.
2.) I also transfer all of my software installers to the same hard disk as disk images.
3.) When software updates are available, I download the files from the Downloads page to the same external drive. (I don't do the installs from Software Update; I only use that to tell me what needs updating.)
4.) When something goes really bad - almost always from third party software, almost never from Apple software - I wipe the hard drive on the computer and do a full clean reinstall from my external disk. Because EVERYthing - the OS, the updates, and all my applications - are on the external hard disk, the reinstall goes very fast.
Of course, when I do the clean reinstall, I skip whatever application or utility I suspect caused my problem.
The full clean reinstall takes up to three or four hours which I can do while watching an evening of TV. To me, this is a far far better use of my time than spending weeks trying to find that ONE application extension or preference file that is trashing my system.
(By the way, when I do the clean install, I NEVER restore the Library from my back up. I restore all my data from back up, but I trash the old Libraries because whatever went wrong is still in there ... like a bad Ktext extension from a wayward game or widget.)
Now just to prove I really am a NUT, my other system: I keep a firewire external drive cloned to my computer using SuperDuper! When I have updates or new applications, I shut down and boot from the clone. I install the update or the new application on the clone. If that doesn't crash my system, then I'll go ahead and reboot to the internal drive and repeat the installation.
Yep. I have WAY too much time on my hands. But.... I lost all of my staff computers to a bad Windows service pack several years ago and I decided "never again". The Apple OS is not prone to those types of regular Windows disasters, and I have never lost critical data on a Mac, and I have never had an entire department off-line for a week due to a bad Mac OS update. Still, I am old, old habits die hard, so I do this stuff with my Macs at home.
Of course I hope none of these extraordinary efforts are necessary in your case. With luck you can Uninstall the game, reformat your LaCie, and be back to flawless operation shortly.
Hope all this helps ... (jk)

  • In replacing a hard drive on a Mac book circa 2006, can you put too much hard drive space in and cause overheating? I've had 2 hard drives fail after installation in the past 3 weeks.

I recently had my Mac book circa 2006 updated to OS Lion and in the process was told I needed a new hard drive. I just replaced my original hard drive 9 months ago and was told at that time not to put too large a hard drive on my laptop or it could overheat. Now I have gone through 2 hard drives in the past 3 weeks since updating to Lion both of which were a terabyte in size. The authorized repair shop that put both failed hard drives in insists that the size of the hard drive does not cause problems in the Mac book but I am wondering why 2 failed in such a short time when the smaller hard drive lasted. It was working when I took it in for the updates but their diagnotic test showed that the first replacement HD was failing. I'm not sure what to think now.

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

  • Need Advice re: Too Small Hard Drive

When I bought my Pro in 2006, I did so because I was starting a job teaching video journalism at a middle school and I also wanted to make personal movies. The Apple salesperson I spoke with said that 80GB was sufficient for the job, so I went with it.
Unfortunately, within a few months I realized what a mistake that was. For example, I loaded 3 hrs of mini-DV video of family memories to edit, but it was 45GB! And now that I have 2000 songs in iTunes, 30,000 photos in iPhoto, and who knows how many movies in iMovie, I have no room on my hard drive. I have had to put 3/4 of what I have produced on external drives not for backup purposes, but because my computer couldn't hold them!
I have discussed this issue with the Apple Store on a few occasions b/c I felt that the salesperson made a mistake in recommending such a small internal drive, and I'd like Apple to do something about it. I was told that I would have to go to someone outside Apple to have my drive swapped for a larger one and then have all the software reloaded. The problem is that I don't think I ever got the disks for the programs Apple loaded when I first bought the computer, and I also have software that I have downloaded over the past 1-3 years for which I have no record.
Does anyone know how I might get Apple to agree to give me a larger drive? I'd pay for the upgrade, of course, but I think they owe me that much. Of course I will use external drives to store things on, but I need more than 80GB to do what I need to do.
    HELP, PLEASE!!
    Thank you.

    Kenneth:
You make me feel young, although I am taking RMDs on my IRA. In the past year I have swapped out HDDs in a PowerBook G3, iBook G3, PowerBook G4 12", PowerBook G4 15", iBook G4 14" and a MBP 15.4". I haven't done a MacBook, but you hardly have any screws of which to keep track they are so straightforward. No, I don't do this for a living; I do it for my children and grandchildren. I have never lost a screw or put one in the wrong slot. I use a very simple method to keep the screws organized so that they go back exactly whence they came. Next time try this:
I clicked on the pages of each step in iFixit directions which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier.
Some of us do this to save money, some because we like tinkering, some because it is a challenge, and various combinations of those reasons. If a person does not feel comfortable doing this they can pay to have the professionals do it. We give people the information, and users choose how they wish to have it done.

Can I put one or two more hard drives into a Pavilion p2 1122? Is there a particular spec or physical size that this must be?
    This question was solved.

Your HP Pavilion p2-1122 Desktop Computer only has space for one hard drive in it... the one installed at the factory. The only way to add any more drive internally, is to remove the CD/DVD and use that space, or to fabricate and install a drive cage... room permitting.
