Too many photos, how to organize?

I have a macbook pro and with two little boys, our hard drive has been filled up with photos.  What is the best way to remove these photos from our computer but still keep them accessible and usable in iphoto?  We do have a time capsule, which might be the best way, but I am hoping someone can guide me in the right direction.
Thanks so much.

  • Too many photos: how can I keep iPhoto lively?

I have about 2000 photos in the iPhoto library - and already everything works more sluggishly. I suspect there's some way to organise all these files so that they don't hold things up. I wonder how to check this out?

    Oliver
I was working on the possibility that a corrupt thumbnail might be causing the slowness, but if you're on 512MB of RAM it would make a big difference if you chose to double it.
What you cannot do is put a chunk of your library apart from the rest, but what you can do is have two (or more) libraries. This can be achieved most simply by using iPhoto Library Manager (http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html) to create and manage the various libraries you create. If at some point later on you wish to merge the various libaries, iPLM will help you do this too.
    Hope this helps

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

Error saying "this ID has been authorised too many times" , how to resolve ASAP?

    Adobe Live Chat: http://www.adobe.com/support/chat/ivrchat.html
They can reset your authorizations, and then you must reauthorize any devices you still need.
(Unfortunately, Adobe haven’t got round to an admin website for viewing and editing authorizations.)
    Some of the representatives haven't been properly trained and don't know what to do (and claim there is nothing they can do);
in that case the only way seems to be to give up that chat and try another session hoping for a properly trained representative.
If your problem is with another device using Overdrive, Bluefire, Aldiko or similar third party app, it is recommended not to mention that app when on the chat, just mention that you have run out of authorizations  (E_ACT_TOO_MANY_ACTIVATIONS) .  Thanks to AJP_Bear for that tip.

  • Keyword Search showing too many photos

I have over 22,000 photos and over 300 keywords for them.  Sadly I cannot search by keyword since the keyword list only shows the last 146 keywords on the screen (a known bug that, in my case, only shows keywords beginning with p-z) and there is no way to scroll to any keywords before it.  I have therefor taken to entering the keywords manual in the "all" field, which worked fine in iPhoto 08, but reveals way too many photos in iPhoto 11.  From what I can tell, if there is one photo with that keyword in any given event, it will show me every photo in that event.  So, for example, if I want to see "Jane" and there is one photo of Jane in the Hawaii" event, it will show me every photo in the "Hawaii" event.
I have occassioanlly stumbled upon workarounds for this, I think entering a space after the keyword or something, but can't recall any concrete solution that seems to work now.  Can anyone help me with this extremely frustrating problem?  (And I know about Smart Albums.  That won't solve this one.)

Did you ever solve this problem. I have it too and it's driving me crazy.

    No.
    Have a current backup.
Hold the option command keys and launch iPhoto to launch the First aid.
Start with repairing permissions first and proceed from there.
If you need to be more agressive, try the tried and true:

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

  • How many photos are in Organizer Catalog

How many photos are in my Organizer Catalog?

Sorry if you already know this but I feel it is worth repeating. There are no photos "in" the organizer - the photos are where you put them or have told the organizer/editor to put them.
The organizer database only contains links to your photos which is why you should NOT rename, delete or move a photo by external applications like Windows Explorer of Finder. The organizer does hold a small preview image of very low quality which it uses in the grid view.
If you want to know how many photos have been cataloged, then try going into the thumbnail grid view and ensure that all images are being viewed - i.e. no Back button or Show All button at the top of the grid. There is usually a status line at the bottom of the window which contains a count of images.
If you tell us which operating system you are running on and which version of Photoshop Elements you have, we may be able to help you more.

  • Iphoto does not load into iDVD- too many photos?

Recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 and iLife '09. Ever since, iPhoto will not load into iDVD (iphoto 8.0 and iDVD 7.0.3). When trying to open current and new projects in iDVD, the project opens, and plays, but the photos from iPhoto never load, the loading icon just spins on and on. When I open a new document, the same thing happens. Tried trashing preferences in both programs, reinstalling iLife, and reparing permissions. All software updates are current. Still won't work.
I am starting to wonder if it has to do with the number of photos I have in iPhoto, which is about 4000. The photos loaded with no problem until I upgraded. Could it be that the upgrades in iPhoto just make the files too large, and it's too much to expect that many photos to load? Does anyone know how many photos is too many,— or can you suggest anything I have not tired that might work?

This is from Mac Help. It is a good idea to create another account to use in troubleshooting situations such as this. After you create the new account, open iDVD from that account. Try creating a small project to see if you are having the same problems. Post back with your results.
_Adding a new user account to your computer_
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete to cancel.

  • Too many !, how do I purge iTunes so I can re-populate?

Ok I've got way too many !'s & doubles of songs.
How do I purge iTunes of all songs so I can then re-import?
Will my playlists also be deleted? Or will I still be able to see what songs I had in them & just have to re-add their new location?

    To find duplicates:
Select an item below Library or Playlists, and then do one of the following:
Choose File > Show Duplicates to find every instance of a song from the same artist from any album in your collection. For example, the same song could appear on the artist’s album and on a movie soundtrack.
Press the Option key and choose File > Show Exact Duplicates to find multiple copies of the same song (if, for example, you inadvertently imported the song twice).
To help prevent duplicates from appearing in your library in the first place, it's recommended that you have two particular options in your iTunes Preferences enabled. If you're interested, follow these steps to enable them:
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. If you're using Windows, choose Preferences from the Edit menu. If you're on a Mac, choose Preferences from the iTunes menu.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Make sure the checkboxes next to the following options are selected:
Enabling these options will ensure that when you add an item to your iTunes library it is copied to your iTunes folder and that iTunes keeps your folder structure organized. When these options are enabled, iTunes should not allow you to add an item to your library that already appears in your library.

  • Too many apps - how do I delete those not on the 11 pages?

I have way too many apps & my space is almost all used up. I know how to delete apps from the 11 pages of 20 apps each. I know how to access my extra apps from the search iPad page but how do I delete some of those apps where I have to type them in to find them? Many thanks.

Probably easier to delete them in bulk in iTunes and then resync your iPad?
