Too many photos on iphoto

Should I create several libraries to manage a large amount of photos , or can i load all 10,000 photos without causing slowdowns .

yes - to export a video you must export as kind is original
however moving to a new system does not involve either exporting or importing
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

  • Do we have too many photos in iphoto 6?

After last roll was downloaded from digital camera (91photos) We have total of 3300 +. Which if you print six to a page its 539 pages. When we select multiple photos get a text message with iphoto camera on left saying document page not loaded. So will not print. The only way I have found to get around it is to click on Library photos which shows the very first photos on the screen then go to advanced options and select a page number to print six pictures. Tried even with photos I had printed before by doing he same thing. Everything was working fine before that last roll was downloaded.

    tap:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you trying to select and print 6 photos or more photos at 6 per page? Can you describe the workflow you're using to select the photos, bring up iPhoto's print window, select the paper size and other options?

  • Keyword Search showing too many photos

I have over 22,000 photos and over 300 keywords for them.  Sadly I cannot search by keyword since the keyword list only shows the last 146 keywords on the screen (a known bug that, in my case, only shows keywords beginning with p-z) and there is no way to scroll to any keywords before it.  I have therefor taken to entering the keywords manual in the "all" field, which worked fine in iPhoto 08, but reveals way too many photos in iPhoto 11.  From what I can tell, if there is one photo with that keyword in any given event, it will show me every photo in that event.  So, for example, if I want to see "Jane" and there is one photo of Jane in the Hawaii" event, it will show me every photo in the "Hawaii" event.
I have occassioanlly stumbled upon workarounds for this, I think entering a space after the keyword or something, but can't recall any concrete solution that seems to work now.  Can anyone help me with this extremely frustrating problem?  (And I know about Smart Albums.  That won't solve this one.)

Did you ever solve this problem. I have it too and it's driving me crazy.

Some photos in iPhotos on MacBook Pro show "!" There are 7000 photos.

    No.
    Have a current backup.
Hold the option command keys and launch iPhoto to launch the First aid.
Start with repairing permissions first and proceed from there.
If you need to be more agressive, try the tried and true:

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

  • How many is too many pictures on iphoto

will having a couple thousand pictures on iphoto slow down my macbook pro? It seems to run slow getting pictures to come up and even on other safari web pages?

I would consider an external drive to store your photos at this point, you are getting up there. It will free up space on your internal drive, then you get to have another go-round:)
By the way my wife killed 2 MBP's by ot clearing her drive of too many photos.
Drives are cheap, but some photos are priceless.
    Just my thoughts;)

Go to Setting>General>About. oow much avaialbe storage do you have?

  • While writing a journal I drag many photos from iPhoto to the journal pages. Every time I get a pop-up that asks if I want to publish to Facebook which I don't. I have to cancel it each time and it's driving me crazy!

While writing a journal I drag many photos from iPhoto to the journal. Each time I get a pop-up asking if I want to publish that item to Facebook which I don't. I have to stop and cancel the pop-up each time which is time consuming. How do I get this to stop? It's driving me crazy. (And yes I am a member of Facebook.)

With iPhoto open, from the menu bar click iPhoto / Preferences then select the Accounts tab.
If you see Facebook on the left select that then click -  (minus)
Quit then relaunch iPhoto. See if that makes a difference.

  • Iphoto does not load into iDVD- too many photos?

Recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 and iLife '09. Ever since, iPhoto will not load into iDVD (iphoto 8.0 and iDVD 7.0.3). When trying to open current and new projects in iDVD, the project opens, and plays, but the photos from iPhoto never load, the loading icon just spins on and on. When I open a new document, the same thing happens. Tried trashing preferences in both programs, reinstalling iLife, and reparing permissions. All software updates are current. Still won't work.
I am starting to wonder if it has to do with the number of photos I have in iPhoto, which is about 4000. The photos loaded with no problem until I upgraded. Could it be that the upgrades in iPhoto just make the files too large, and it's too much to expect that many photos to load? Does anyone know how many photos is too many,— or can you suggest anything I have not tired that might work?

This is from Mac Help. It is a good idea to create another account to use in troubleshooting situations such as this. After you create the new account, open iDVD from that account. Try creating a small project to see if you are having the same problems. Post back with your results.
_Adding a new user account to your computer_
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete to cancel.

  • Too many pictures in iPhoto.  What should I do?

Hi.  I have over 33,000 pictures in iPhoto.  Consequently, it runs super slow.  What should I do?  I only have one iPhoto libary.  Should I have more?

    No - and no
33,000 is not too many - I have over 40,000 - someone posted today that they have over 300,000 photos
multiple libraries is usually not a solution to anythingdo you have all of the sharing options turned off?

  • Re: To many photos in iPHOTO - TO SLOW

    Two questions
I take way to many photos...
    1. Tech guy came by and "created a second database" under the iPHOTO icon.  He held down command or ALT or some combination of keys to allow me to "open the second database of photos".   What keys am I to "hold down" and then click on iPHOTO to see/open that second database?
Tried ALT and a variety of options, none worked.
    2. I have WAY to many photos and when I open iPHOTO, the entire MacBookPro operates at a snails pace.  HOW DO I have easy access to my photos yet keep this expenisve computer running as fast as possible...even when looking at photos on one of my 2 screens?

You posted in a forum for workstations, Mac Pro tower, not notebooks.
I was going to tell you to move iPhoto to another disk drive, preferably an SSD 2x the size of your iPhoto catalogue.
By having your Pictures on one drive and iPhoto on another it works better. True of doing that with all your stuff, get them off the system boot drive.
Or put in a large as possible SSD or Fusion or 1TB drive in notebook. There are 1TB SSDs.
Ideally you have at least 8GB of RAM, might even want 16GB but wanting and being able to upgrade are two different matters.
Showing that the file is a package and has folders embedded in does not help. Applications are packages of same design. Get Info. Show Package Contents.
Splitting it into two can but then you need to open from the one you want if you want to alternate.
Maybe you have reached the point where your drive doesn't have enough space, or RAM or processor. You didn't include those or the model year to know.
Or maybe look at something else instead of iPhoto for what you do.

  • Can too many Photos slow down a Mac Pro?

Hi, I have atleast 100,000 photos on my pc, would this many photos slow down a 2.66GHz quad core mac pro with 6 gigs of memory? thanks

I have 60,000. I use non-boot drive of course for data. Some people have huge music and video libraries of 2TB spanning 2-3 drives on stripped RAIDs.
Mac Pro and OS X really likes RAM, and the base for DDR3 8-core is to have 6 DIMMs and I'd go with 6 x 2GB, either Apple or 3rd party RAM, then add 3 x 640GB drives (WD Black Caviar). Stripe two, even if you partition it as 400GB each. http://www.barefeats.com/nehal04.html
And keep the boot drive to OS and applications primarily.

  • Too many photos?

Is there a limit to the number of photos that IPhoto 6 can safely handle?
I've currently got over 18000 photos and videos on there and sometimes it runs quirky...
I get a message to rebuild my thumbnail cache every week or two...
    thanks!

My boot drive has 141GB used and 92 GB free.
My second internal drive, which contains the iPhoto Library, has only 37GB free and 428GB used--that might be the problem.
I am reminded of another problem that's been happening lately, because it just happened now:
While I am importing from an SD card with my Iogear USB card reader, in the middle of the import, the flashing light showing activity on the card reader goes dead. The iPhoto import continues to run, but the photo number stops counting down (no longer importing photos). When I stop the import, (and choose the option to keep the photos already imported) iPhoto essentially gets stuck with the message "Stopping..." with no visible progress after minutes and hours (Activity Monitor does not show the program as hung, however...). The flash card drive remains visible on the desktop, but I am unable to open the files anymore. I am also unable to eject the SD card (again the Activity Monitor shows everything working normally). When I physically pull out the card reader usb plug, the disk icon disappears; when I plug it back in, the card reader light turns on again (though not showing any activity), but the card does not reappear on the desktop or in the finder window. I have to reboot for the computer to recognize the card again... The CPU usage on Activity Monitor during this whole problem is minimal, with 80-95% idle the whole time. The memory usage seems to creep continually upwards, from 800MB when I first started iPhoto to 1.3GB and higher.
I recently ran Disk Utility and had an error that could not be repaired on my boot disk--"Invalid Leaf Record Count (It should be 1 instead of 851)"--could all this be a sign of my hard drive going bad?
    Help!

  • Iphone 6 too many photos

i only have 500 photos in my camera roll but when I connect my iPhone 6 to iTunes it says that i have over 3000 items for the photo category.
i originally had around 2000 when I first noticed the issue but since then I have deleted many photos and videos and the results have still not changed

    Hello Ben,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iTunes is indicating that you have more pictures than you really do. You can use the steps under "If your device gets stuck during startup" in the following article. It doesn't mention the issue you are describing, but other users reporting the same thing have reported success using these steps.
