Too many photos....Too many places....Too much of a newbie

I am currently working on a windows based computer...Have just purchased a Macbook Pro, cs5 upgrade and  LR3....Still waiting for both to come UPS but have started reading a quick start guide on LR3.....I have approx 10,000 photos on my old laptop and have been working on trying to consolidate them all in one location on one hard drive... I think at the end of the day when I am done I will probably end up with some duplicates.....I have a few questions and would appreciate any comments or suggestions on the fastest way to consolidate and organize my photos....It kind of got away from me over the last couple years...and some other queries.
Out of the two software pkgs I am guessing l should concentrate on getting a working knowledge of LR3 before I even bother installing CS5....Thoughts on this anyone?
my thought is that I need to create one folder on a new hard drive and copy and paste all my individual images(not folders) into that using my Windows PC and then organize my pictures from there on LR3....this way it will recognize the duplicates and I can chose not to copy them....From there put import them into LR3....Is this a good approach or is there a better one?
I am thinking that I need to set up an external drive system for storage of older photos and then keep the recent photos on the new Mac.....Is this a good approach
If that is a good approach.... what approach to setting up the drives do you guys recommend? RAID????????  I certainly want to have  two copies of my photos at all times and make the back up seamless, as I have experienced a hard drive failure and do not want to go through that ever again especially risking losing photos.
I know these are fairly simple questions to some of you out there but being as I am going to be spending a fair amount of time trying to organize my past photos and want to make sure when I start downloading them onto the new Mac that I do it properly so as to not create a bunch more work.....Any suggestions anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated

Jethro64,

I would install CS5 first and then LR. You don't have to bother about using CS5 before you get familiar with LR.
my thought is that I need to create one folder on a new hard drive and copy and paste all my individual images(not folders) into that using my Windows PC and then organize my pictures from there on LR3....this way it will recognize the duplicates and I can chose not to copy them....From there put import them into LR3....Is this a good approach or is there a better one?
Generally a good approach. A few thoughts:
Make sure you have one single top-level folder for your images (i.e. "Pictures"). This will make your life easier in the future
Try setting up some sort of folder structure within this top-level folder, i.e. by date. LR itself offers the following folder-names to be generated upon import, if so desired:
(the names of the months are in German, but I'm sure you'll get the meaning)
When you will import into LR, the pictures themselves will not get copied into LR. The LR catalog is just that, a catalog, as a catalog in a public library. The images themselves either remain where they are or are copied/moved to another location on HD.
I am thinking that I need to set up an external drive system for storage of older photos and then keep the recent photos on the new Mac.....Is this a good approach
That approach is OK. If you move the folders/images from within LR when you want to get them off your internal, you'll still be able to access them from your LR catalog.
If that is a good approach.... what approach to setting up the drives do you guys recommend? RAID????????  I certainly want to have  two copies of my photos at all times and make the back up seamless, as I have experienced a hard drive failure and do not want to go through that ever again especially risking losing photos.
RAID (especially RAID1 / RAID10) is a good way for protecting from single drive failures. But be aware that having a RAID array still means all of your photos are in the same physical location (fire, water, earthquake, ...). Also, your RAID controller might be a single point of failure.
To protect against this it could be advisable to have at least one backup on a portable drive which you can take offsite or somewhere in the cloud.
Some general advice:
Before you start organizing your photos for good, do some playing around with LR with a set of test pictures (copies of your real ones) to get a feel of what's best for you. You can always delete the test images from your catalog or even create a new, fresh catalog when you want to start over fresh.
Do some reading/watching on LR, as getting the basics is very important. I can recommend Julieanne Kosts videos (see LR3 Getting Started Series) and the first few chapters in the LR manual.
Enjoy!

  • How many photos is too much

I realize that this is one of those "your mileage may vary" type questions, but here goes:
How many photos is too much for a single iphoto library? Have people either encountered problems after reaching a certain threshold? Or are there people who have lots of photos with no problems at all?
I am in the process of trying to consolidate several iphoto libraries into one huge library. I say "trying," because I am running into problems with importing thousands of photos. The master library will have around 50,000 photos, although a good many of them will probably be duplicates (which is another hassle).
Because the consolidation is such a pain, I am wondering if it will be worth it. Is 50,000 photos OK for a library? What about 100,000?
Thanks for any words of wisdom.

In addition to Terence's suggestions make sure that in the Photos mode you have the Event titles displayed and only open those events you're working with. Having no Event titles displayed and all of thumbnails displayed will greatly slow down iPhoto whether it be 6 or 7.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic."  Comcast tells me server is not down all other network activity is fine.  WHat's up with this?

Starting earlier today, this also became my problem - can receive but not send in Entourage. The account settings are correct in Entourage - I even created a new account.  My Mac running 10.7.5 won't read the original Office : MAC 2008 disk, so I can't do a fix or reinstall from the disk.
This is not an issue if I log onto the Comcast site.
And so, I started using Mail but, unlike Entourage, Mail won't import my Entourage info.

  • Why is there way too much extra info attached to my photo cd, when I simply burnt only 6 pictures on it? This has been happening for months now.

Why is there too much extra info attached to my photo cd, when I simply burnt only 6 pictures on it?
This has been happening for several months now.
    It used to work correctly.
    For example:
I burnt a photo file of 25 pictures from my iphoto collection.
When I went to the store to print them, the computer indicated there were 155 photos on it.
All were cropped versions of my 25 pictures.
    Weird.
Then when I only burnt 6 pictures today onto a cd, I took the disc to a Print Shop.
Sure enough, the disc had other data and files associated with photos on it.
Yes, my 6 were on it, but the Print Shop had to spend extra time searching for them.
    What's uP?

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • To upload photos from my pc onto my ipad using a usb stick. I bought a camera connector kit and tried placing the usb stick onto one of the white square adaptors, stuck it into the ipad2 and I got 'the device uses too much power'' message. Pls help.

I am not very familiar with the ipad2. I wished to transfer some photos from my pc (not an apple pc but that is the only one I have) to my ipad2 as I thought it would be easier to cull them, edit, crop etc to create albums for our recent trip (the photos are already on the pc and no longer on the camera memory card). When I place the usb stick on the adaptor and stick it onto the Ipad2 I keep getting 'device uses too much power/ requires too much power' message. I read somewhere on the internet that a usb hub could be used to solve the issue but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong? Is there actually a way around this problem. If not why does apple sell this product for Ipad users at all?
Thank you for any help/ solution you can offer.
    Regards

I'd ask that on the iPad forum.

If they were deleted from your camera roll that should have resulted in a corresponding decrease in the estimated size of your next backup.
If it's still saying that you don't have enough storage to back up, read through this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.  It provides some suggestions for reducing your iCloud storage, such as deleting unneeded email.
The other area to look at is your text messages.  These are included in the backup.  If you have lots of photos and videos attached to your messages, that can significantly increase the size of your backup.  If that's the case, deleting these may make a big difference.

You can transfer photos outside of iTunes. I do it all the time. THat said, i have a 50/50 success rate with them. I'd avoid sandisk and kingston, their bundled software triggers the 'too much power' warning.
I've had mixed luck with lexar, some work, some don't.
I did have good luck with an older 4 gig geek squad one.
Look for drives without software on them, without bright LED lights and I haven't gotten any larger than 4 gig to work, but that may just be me.
For a less troublesome way? h onestly, I use a SD card that I've formatted with the DCIM folder. I've never had one of them trigger the 'too much power' warning. Just make sure they're not SDXC. those don't work.

  • All pictures in Photos on Mac syncing with Photos on iPhone and taking up too much space

Since I downloaded Photos on my MacBook Pro, all the pictures that I had in iPhotos are not showing up on Photos on my laptop AND my iPhone. I used to be able to choose which iPhoto albums to sync with my iPhone and would prefer to do that again. It is taking up way too much space to have them all synced to my phone. Any idea how to choose which pictures I want available on my phone???

Before the migration to Photos on laptop, I would go to iTunes, Photos, Sync Photos, Selected Albums, and then choose the albums from iPhoto to sync to phone.
Since I had the problem with all of the photos syncing to iPhone, I un-checked Sync, but they were all still showing up on iPhone.
I just looked at iTunes and saw this message:
When I looked last week, the "copy from _______" was not an option. Now I am able to choose the iPhoto albums that I want to sync just as I was before.
I still don't know why they were syncing when I didn't have that option selected, but it appears Apple has fixed the issue I was having.
I guess I will continue to use iPhoto rather than Photos on my laptop to avoid this issue again.
    Thank you for your help!!!!

    help

Is the USB drive you are trying to connect a USB thumb drive or a USB hard drive?
I have 4 USB thumb drives - an old one at 250MB, newer ones at 1GB and 4GB, and a new one at 8GB. All work in the camera connection kit except the 250MB (requires too much power). Suggest you get a new USB drive.
    Use your camera's SD card.
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
