  • Hdiutil -- trying to create a sparseimage ends with "too many processes"

    Hello
I've been trying to create a sparseimage file using both the Disk Util app and the hdiutil command-line tool to use with the Time Machine from a network folder. However, both fail with a "too many processes" error.
% hdiutil create -library SPUD -size 1g -fs HFS+J -type SPARSEBUNDLE -volname lala  lala
hdiutil: create failed - Too many processes
I've tried to search for it on Google without success. Is anybody else getting such errors?
    Kind regards,

  • Mail crashes my web server - too many processes

Just a bit of information for anyone out there who has found their web server having trouble during access by Leopard Mail.
I have 1 computer using Leopard. The Mail app is setup with 5 accounts (i.e. orders, service, accounting, etc.). The accounts are all IMAP. Our website is hosted at Bluehost.com.
Mail starts so many processes accessing these 5 accounts simultaneously (instead on serially one after another) that it maxs out my web server processes and renders anything that needs additional processes such as FrontPage extensions, PHP, etc. unavailable. I'm not sure if the problem is associated with how many or improper closure of processes but I can tell you this. Mail with 1 user breaks my server and quitting Leopard Mail closes all of the processes and restores the functionality of my web server.
Apple...could you put an option in to allow serial access to the email accounts or really look at processes at this is a big problem. Thanks.

  • Too many java processes.

    Hi,
I have installed Forms & Reports Services Standalone 10.1.2.0.2 on RHEL 5 and applied the 10.1.2.3 patch to it. After the patch, the java processes continue to grow so fast that sometimes when I open a new session and try to switch to oracle user, I get a "too many processes" error.
Apparently these java processes are from the Reports Server, however I haven't even yet configured the Reports server and am not doing anything with the reports server at the moment. Right now, I'm only configuring the Forms server.
So, I am wondering what is going on here - why are there so many java processes and what to do about it?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on dependency better you can go for 3 parellel process at a time as what we are doing in our project.
check schedule time for each your process chain which fetchs data from source system (Info Package) and re schedule them which should not execute at a time (make it max 3) and try again

How can I reduce the processes? Is there any alterante method of building this flow to avoid warning messages..
Though these are warning messages ,what is the correct flow of building process chain for this without getting any warning messages.

Does anyone have any idea what this means? This same router has, on average, one disconnect from our GRE tunnel each day and I can't connect to it externally until the cable modem is rebooted. The log above is the only thing I've got to go on really. Everything else looks normal.

I have Solved the problem my friend suggestion.
The excel file i was trying to access is from WEBI report which was saved as .xls format and then then made some modifications to the spreadsheet.
What i did was i deleted the unused columns, i.e my spread sheet has data upto AQ column so i deleted remaining cells.
and while  defining the  excel file format i selected the option workbook and selected the proper sheet and in the other options i have chosen column range and also check the box ( extended range) now i could over come the error OLE or COM processing error

  • TS3682 I have tried to restore me iPod that is disabled due to typing in the wrong password too many times. iTunes keeps giving me a box saying that it can't connect because I need to type in the passcode on the iPod (which I can't) what do I do now?

I have followed the steps provided by apple to restore an iPod touch. It is disabled due to having the wrong password entered too many times. When I get part way through the restore process on my computer it pops up a box saying that it can't restore until I enter the passcode into the iPod. I have tried this same process over 5 times now and keep gutting the same results. It is my kids iPod and he has only had it since September. Someone please help me before I throw the thing through the window and my kid strangles me!!! Thanks!

  • Too many open socket connections causing ColdFusion to crash?

I’m currently working on an e-commerce site which sends and receives information to/from the client’s order management system via XML over a TCP/IP socket.  It uses a very old java-based custom tag called CFX_JSOCKET (which appears to have been written in 2002) to open the socket, send the data, and get the response.  The code that calls the custom tag and sends/receives data from the OMS pre-dates my working on the site, but its always worked, so I haven’t paid it much attention.
Back in the summer of 2009 we started experiencing issues with ColdFusion (v.7 on Window 2003 at the time) locking up on a more and more frequent basis, until it ultimately became a daily issue.  After extensive research we narrowed the issue down to the communication between the web server and our client’s order management server.  It seemed the issue with ColdFusion hanging was either related to there being too many connections open, or to these connections hanging and resulting in dead threads.  This an educated guess based on a blog post I’d seen online, not actual monitoring of either CF or the TCP/IP connections.  As soon as we dialed back the timeout on the CFX_JSOCKET tag from 20 seconds to 10, the issue disappeared, so we left it at that and moved on.
Fast forward to this January. The site is hosted at a new location, on a 64-bit Windows 2008 box running ColdFusion 9.  Over the years traffic on the site has continued to grow.  The nature of the clients business means that August and January are their business times of the year (back to school for college kids) and in January ColdFusion once again started locking up on an almost-daily basis.
One significant difference is that the address cleansing software that previously ran on the box and was used to verify shipping addresses is not available for 64-bit, so when we moved to the new server last summer, that task was moved to the client’s order management software and handled via XML like all other interaction with that system. However, while most XML calls to that server (order input, inventory check, etc) take under a second to complete, the address cleansing call regularly takes over 5 seconds to return data, and frequently times out.
Once we eliminated the address cleansing call from the checkout process, ColdFusion once again stopped locking up regularly.  So it appears that once again it’s the communication between the web server and the order management server that’s causing problems. We currently have that address cleansing call disabled on the web site in order to keep ColdFusion from crashing, but that’s not a long term solution.
We don’t have, nor can I find online, the source code for the CFX_JSOCKET custom tag, so I decided I’d write some CF code utilizing the java methods to open the socket, send the data, get the response, and close the connection.  My test code is working fine (under no load).  However, in trying to troubleshoot an issue I had with it, I started monitoring the TCP/IP connections using TCPView.  And I noticed that all the connections to the order management server, whether opened via the custom tag or my new code, remain open in either a TIME_WAIT or FIN_WAIT2 status for well over 2 minutes, even though I know for a fact that my new code is definitely closing the connection from the web server side.
They do all close eventually, but I’m wondering 1. Why they’re remaining open that long; 2. Is that normal; and 3. If all these connections remaining open could be what’s causing ColdFusion to choke.
Does this sound plausible?  If so, does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations about how to fix it?  My research seems to indicate this might be a matter of the order management system not closing the connection on its end, but I’m in way over my head, and before I go to client and tell them it’s their OMS causing the issue, I need to feel a little more confident that I’m on the right track.
Any help or advice would be very greatly appreciated.  And thanks for taking the time to read through my long-winded explanation of the problem.

    Hi Laurie,
Not aware of custom tag called CFX_JSOCKET. I guess the process you described very well is consuming a resource then you are getting a problem. Trick is what parameter to adjust. Perhaps you are running out of one the threads in CFadmin > Server Settings > Request Tuning.
I expect if you enable CF Metrics logging where you can log the threads and other resources then you can find out which parameter needs adjusting. Let me know if you want some details on enabling CF Metrics. Perhaps others will have much better idea than me and help without the overhead of logging.
The other interesting thing is you are using CF9.0.0. Do you have some reasons for not being on updater1 CF9.0.1?
    HTH, Carl.
PS I posted before however seems to have gone, just hope does not come back and then I have posted twice.

  • When I close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete, I want to start over on Firefox, I usually do this when too many tabs and windows are open. However, Firefox always restores the tabs and windows I previously had. How can I stop that from happening?

This happens when FireFox is not responding, and I want to close firefox with ctrl-alt-delete. Too many tabs can make Firefox crash. That is why I want to use ctrl-alt-delete to close FireFox. I tried finding a way to disable this, but I found no option to.

Ending the Firefox program or process with the Windows Task Manager "looks like" a crash. The proper way to exit Firefox is click Firefox button > Exit (or File > Exit, if using the Menu Bar).

  • I have been blocked from my own ITunes songs because my apple ID associated with too many devices

I cannot access songs from my own iTunes Apple ID because it says my iPhone has been associated with too many devices.  I have to wait 90 days to access my own songs on my iPhone.  Here is what happend:
1-Our family moved.  So, with the address change, the credit cards on all of the apple ID's would no longer work because the other users had our old address. (I have 4 users in the family).
2-My family started calling me while I was out of town complaining that purchases were rejected.  This was because our address had changed and it no longer matched.
3-I tried to walk them thru the process of changing the home address on the credit card, but they couldn't do it.  They assured me that they were doing it correctly and were still rejected.
4-So, being the techie of the family, I simply logged into each of their iTunes accounts from my iPhone while I was out of town and made the address change.  While I was in their  accounts, I noticed they didn't have automatic downloads and iTunes match and stuff.  So, I changed it so it would work for them when they logged back in.
5-I go back to log into my own account on my iphone and I cannot access my own songs on the iTunes cloud for 90 days!!!!  This is quite disappointing.
How can I get this corrected?   I tried to reset user settings (not a erase and reset).  I figure it's not my phone, but my iTunes account thinks I'm doing something sharing-wise.
So, in summary, when I am on my iPhone and I go to my iTunes library and click on a song (that I have paid for) with the cloud and down arrow beside it, it's rejected.  It says that I have too many apple id's associated with this device and I must wait 90 days.  It counts down each day.
I just want access to the music I paid FOR!!

    Thank you-I will contact support.
No, I cannot wait 90 days.
Let me restate what I have to endure, even though I own the music and have paid for iTunes Match:
I cannot access my purchases-zero-at all
I have to listen to never ending McDonald's latte commercials and progressive insurance. I have now banned both of those annoying businesses and will not make purchases there.
In summary, I have given apple my minded, and have zero to show for it.
Ps-you get to hear the McDonald's "love hate commercial" every 2 songs on iTunes Radio.  I have substituted the words where I hate McDonald's and love when the commercial is over.

  • Operation Could Not Be Completed:  Too Many Open...

I've had this error showing up a lot in the Safari 3.2 and 4.0 beta activity window when loading multiple tabs of pages with many images (usually gallery type pages or blogs with lots of thumbnails). The result is that some images or other elements like style sheets don't load, leading to the blue question mark, or messed up formatting. Unfortunately, the activity window can't be stretched wide enough to see the whole error, but in fact it's "Operation Could Not Be Completed: Too Many Open Files". The error "socket(PF_ROUTE) failed: Too many open files" shows up in the Console as well, at least with Safari 4. I had also experienced similar problems with "Operation Timed Out" errors as well.
I've been pulling my hair out on this one, because it's rather inconsistent, not to mention annoying. You can usually get an individual page to load completely by refreshing it, but that kind of defeats the purpose of loading multiple tabs all at once. It's also less of a problem if more of those pages are already cached, but you never know for sure. Running your connection through a proxy also helps a bit, but not always.
I found a fix, but it's actually not Safari's "fault" per se. The issue lies in the allowable number of open files per user process, which is set by the system's launchd process at boot time. Note that Safari is not entirely innocent, as FireFox doesn't have this problem. It Seems that Safari just tries to load everything all at once, whereas FireFox does a better job of managing its load requests. Anyway if you run the following command in Terminal:
    sudo launchctl limit
the following list should show up (with perhaps slightly different values)
    cpu unlimited unlimited
    filesize unlimited unlimited
    data 6291456 unlimited
    stack 8388608 67104768
    core 0 unlimited
    rss unlimited unlimited
    memlock unlimited unlimited
    maxproc 200 532
    maxfiles 256 unlimited
The second column is a "soft limit" and the third column is a "hard limit", though to be honest I'm not exactly sure what the difference entails. The image loading problem is caused by hitting the maxfiles limit of just 256 files. The solution is to change maxfiles to 4096/unlimited, and also change maxproc to 1000/2000 since it's pretty low as well. That sounds like a pretty big change, but OS X server is supposed to change them to numbers like this when services like Apache are enabled, and Apple even mentions how to change maxproc at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1659
To make these changes, run the following two commands in Terminal and restart the computer:
    echo "limit maxproc 1000 2000" | sudo tee -a /etc/launchd.conf
echo "limit maxfiles 4096 unlimited" | sudo tee -a /etc/launchd.conf
The commands add the two lines in quotes to the launchd.conf file in /etc/ (if no file exists yet, it creates it). That should clear up the loading issues. I haven't noticed any other problems with these increased numbers, but I'll report back if anything seems to go amiss. Hopefully this will be helpful to someone.

I faced the same problem with an image gallery using css for image resizing. Thanks for the explanation.

  • Too many partitions in my W530?

This may look like a silly question and I fully admit that it might be it... But I have been unable to find a way to get rid of some apparently unuseful partitions in my SSD. I am attaching two images (see below) for clarity.
In image 1, I can see only two partitions, C: and Q: and there are also listed three other "Devices with Removable Storage": the DVD RW drive (D: ), the Removable Disk (F: ) and the Removable Disk (G: ). I tried to get rid of these last two (F: and G: ) but could not figure out how to achieve it. Not that their presence is a problem, just for cleaning purposes, as I do not see any need for them to be listed there. I don't even fathom what they may actually represent.
In image 2, taken from the Acronis True Image backup app, besides the same C: and Q: partitions, I also see a System_drv and an unamed partition that are not listed in the Windows-7 figure. The Unamed Partition, by the way, is always empty but I was discouraged in the past to just get rid of it. I wonder if I should, having received conflicting advice on whether or not to do it.
My question is: How can I eliminate the Removable Disks F: and G: as shown in the Windows figure and would it be a good idea to get rid of the Unamed partition as shown in the Acronis figure.
All help will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Moderator note: images totalling more than 50k converted to links per forum rules:  Lenovo Community Participation Rules

If you were to install Win7 from scratch on a brand new empty drive (spinner or SSD, doesn't matter) and not change anything from the standard default installation options, you'd get TWO partitions:
    (1) un-lettered "system reserved" 100MB, where Boot Manager (and boot menu, presented if you were to install a second or subsequent bootable OS after installing Win7 as the first bootable OS) is placed.  This is also marked as the ACTIVE partition, so that the BIOS goes here to start the actual boot process.
    (2) C-partition for the rest of the drive.  This is where Windows itself gets installed, as a "system" drive.
In the case of Lenovo-provided machines, they have installed additional recovery tools, which are placed into that small un-lettered partition normally referred to as "system reserved" and only 100MB.  Lenovo has enlarged the partition from the standard 100MB to about 1.5GB, but it's functionally identical in purpose.  Also, it's been labeled "SYSTEM_DRV", rather than "System Reserved", but this is of no relevance.
And Lenovo's also added that additional Q-partition, which is where the "data" for system recovery is placed, in the event you needed to or wanted to restore your machine to initial factory state, exactly as it looked when it first came out of the box.
So... what's critical here is that standard Windows7 requires the TWO partitions: (1) ACTIVE partition, where Boot Manager and boot menu lives and where the BIOS goes to start the boot process on what is configured as the first hard drive in the boot sequence, and (2) C-partition because that is specified as the one-and-only bootable OS partition according to the default one-OS boot menu built by the Win7 installer and subsequently examined by Boot Manager at boot time.  Since by default there is only one bootable OS you will not be presented with the boot menu, but instead Boot Manager will simply use that one-and-only OS and start it.  If you had two or more bootable OS's, you'd get a boot list presented onscreen by Boot Manager, and you'd need to select which one to boot from within say 10 seconds else the default OS would automatically be booted.
Any "system image" backup requires BOTH of the above partitions to be checked, since [at least theoretically] BOTH of them need to be backed up and/or restored in tandem should you need to recover from a disaster.  By backing and restoring BOTH, you guarantee a 100% working operating environment should you need to recover from a disaster.
Now the Q partition can be deleted (and its space re-allocated to either expand C, or perhaps in conjunction with shrinking the generally much too large C can be used to allocate one or more additional "data" partitions D, E, etc.) if you will NEVER need to or want to recover back to Lenovo's "factory-provided" out-of-the-box system setup.  This could be the case if you use an alternative method for disaster recovery, such as using Macrium Reflect to take regular periodic (say once a week) "system image" backups, say to an external USB 3.0 drive.
So you could use Macrium Reflect to take an initial "system image" backup, which would effectively be your equivalent of the Lenovo-provided Q partition content, although you wouldn't need Q if you had to restore the Macrium "system image" backup.  And then you'd just establish a weekly regime of further "system image" backups using Macrium, as your ongoing regular protection from a loss of Windows integrity which required some kind of restore to a prior working system.  In this case it would be no older than last week's backup.
If you needed more current protection, just take more frequent "system image" backups (if you only have a C partition), or add a second backup tool like NovaBACKUP to take monthly/daily "data" backups (also to the external USB 3.0 drive).
==> You don't have "too many partitions".  But the above description explains why you have what you have, and confirms that you can blow away Q if you have an alternative and superior backup/recovery method (such as Macrium Reflect) in case of a disaster.
