Too much compression in CS5?

My camcorder puts out AVCHD files. So if they are imported to CS5, are then compressed in mpeg 4 when a rendered file is made? Someone told me that elements and premiere pro cs5 do this?

As far as I know, PPro and PreEl do not output AVCHD... so, yes, editing AVCHD and outputting does result in compressing to another codec

Low resolution - a result of too much compression or is it the source file?

a friend of mine is helping me produce a DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4 and as our source files, we are using 14 video files that were generated using Final Cut Pro.
when the final DVD is produced, we were both disappointed to discover that the screen resolution appears to be quite low - the darks are pixelated and the entire image lacks sharpness. it looks fine on anything up to a large computer screen, but it definitely seems inadequate when viewed on a large flat screen HD television.
the DVD is not HD formatted, by the way.
being quite the amateur on DVD Studio Pro, my question is this: have the original video files been compressed too much and is this the cause of the problem?
the 14 video files that were loaded into DVD Studio Pro, in their original format, take up over 15 GB of space - they are all quicktime files (.mov formatted), generated from FINAL CUT PRO as DVCPRO files in NTSC (those were my export settings) - yet when all of the files are compressed and loaded into DVD Studio Pro, they take up only 1.4 GB.
it would seem that we have at least 3 GB's to spare.
any feedback would be welcomed, and please excuse me for my beginner questions.
additionally, it would be great if anyone could take the time to explain to me where i can change the compression settings / preferences in DVD Studio Pro.

Ok, do not use DVD SP to compress your video. Use Compressor to create a .m2v file of your video and a .ac3 file of your audio. Tutorials can be found at; http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fcp_homepageindex.html
With Compressor you will have much more control over the encoding process and you can get better results. That being said, Compressor is good, but there are even better third party MPEG-2 encoders out there. They will give you even better results at lower bitrates.

Too much compression on FCE project

I have a FCE project that is 14.4 min long and 3.81 GB. When I us DVDSP to create the menu and DVD it ends up as a 995 MB DVD. Compared to the original FCE project, it looks really grainy. I upped the encoding as high as it would go, but I can't get it larger than 995 MB. Since it is the only movie on the DVD is there anyway to get DVDSP to not compress at all?

DVD footage is most often compressed to MPEG2, but the bitrate can vary widely up to 9.8Mbps if you use a replicated disc. Additionally, you can also use MPEG1 on a SD disc, which is not as high a quality, but can allow you to fit vastly more minutes of video on the same size disc.
If you are burning a DVD on your mac then anecdotal evidence suggests that a video bitrate of no more than 7.4Mbps is prudent. More than this and the disc may 'choke' in some players.
This isn't necessarily to do with the laser, so much as the reflective properties of the re-writable disc not being as good as a replicated one. All DVD players should be able to cope with 9.8Mbps from a DVD-Video disc (although sadly not all do, surprisingly), but keep in mind that a DVD-R is not a DVD-Video disc.
If your pristine footage is coming out as grainy when you encode then you really ought to check the settings that you are using. Is the source footage and lighting good quality for the footage? Have you applied any filters or effects? Are you using a good quality encoder?
The final size of the file produced will vary according to the encoding used. The higher the bit rate the larger the file size will be. Audio files add to the overall bit rate on a disc, to, so using AC3 (Dolby Digital) is a very good idea - they have a smaller file size, lower bitrate and can allow you to increase the rate for your video to gain quality.
Be aware that the visual difference between footage encoded at around 7.4Mbps, compared to that encoded at 8 or even 9Mbps is so slight that most people won't notice. There appears to be a law of diminishing returns in operation - you really don't gain anything by encoding at much higher levels, but you will prevent some players playing your disc back reliably.
If you've not yet used Compressor then you really ought to be looking at it. If your results are coming from Compressor, then it is about time you looked at BitVice and if necessary used the DVNC setting there to reduce the noise on the final output. There are other encoders, but none so easy to use as Bitvice, IMO.

Too much limiting! i need a mastering tutorial!

i'm finishing up mixes for what will be a cd release.
i've listened to it on various speakers, from studio monitors to my car, etc. and it sounds pretty good.
however... i've fallen into the trap of putting a limiter on just about every track, sub and even the stereo sum.
unsurprisingly, the whole mix isn't very, well... dynamic.
can anyone give me any suggestions as to how i can get a punchy, loud mix without limiting everything?
by the way, i'm going for an old-school 1970s power pop/rock sound, a la cheap trick and sweet.

The trick too, that relates to what NoEQ was saying, is not to over do the compression in you're recording & mixing process.
Try not to add any more than 3-6dB of gain reduction, when you do compress, you're compression meter should tell you how much you are compressing.
Add a little while, tracking(recording) a little in mixing if needed, redirect the entire drum kit to a Buss, and compress the Kit in it's entirety, Still only a little at a time. You may want to do the same with your guitars & bass, or assign the bass to the Drum Buss so you can gel it together better with the kick.
Also consider your EQ, try to keep a wide Q or bandwidth, try to filter the dodgy bits a little, maybe enhance the good bits a touch... Any more than a boost in 3dB EQ and it'll start introducing phase issues, and smear the attack transients a bit, so they're not as sharp. But if you're boosting more than 3dB and it's not for some real creative purpose, then something must be wrong. It could be the mic or it's placement when it was recorded, it could be the instrument, (always try to solve the problem at the source first) it could be too much compression.
I say use a wide Q of about 0.7, becaue EQs in the 70s weren't capable of doing what we are doing now with them. If you can, try and get your hands on some vintage gear, or emulations, because that will also help you to achieve the sound you're after.
The reason, why I got into talking about the mix and EQ, is because that IS the critical stage before mastering. Over do it and no amount of mastering will get the sound you want, under do it and it could sound dull, or thin, or lifeless. Getting the balance right, is mega important for the mastering stage. Like wise if you have a bad recording to begin with, then no amount of mixing or mastering is going to help.
And the other tip to consider, especially if things are too much on top of each other, or sounding thin.... Is arrangement. Have the guitars play different inversions, or different phrases, choose different amp sounds. Throw some cymbal crashes in if it needs it, have the drums play more dynamically, instead of thrashing them start to end.
These are just all ideas and places that if you pay some attention to, it can REALLY help you master.
When you do master, try using vintage stuff, if you're after that vintage sound, following the above tips. Or think or a Multiband Compressor, use the Limiter so you don't exceed 0dB, that is VERY IMPORTANT in mastering. Some limiters will allow you to drive it more, getting a more energetic sound, but the tendacy here is to over do it. Respect the song's dynamics so soft parts sound soft, it doesn't have to be too soft, and your masters will go a long way.
Also if you're working on a release, try to work at having all songs sound simular as far as tone and dynamics. Constantly compare them, and tweek the EQ, Compressor or Limiter when ever they need it.

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

Report taking too much time in the portal

Hi freiends,
we have developed a report on the ods,and we publish the same on the portal.
the problem is when the users are executing the report at the same time it is taking too much time.because of this the perfoemance is very poor.
is there any way to sort out this issue,like can we send the report to the individual user's mail id
so that they can not log in to the portal
or can we create the same report on the cube.
what could be the main difference if the report made on the cube or ods?
please help me

Try table rsddstats to get the statistics
Using cache memory will decrease the loading time of the report.
Run reporting agent at night and sending results to email. This will ensure use of OLAP cache. So later report execution will retrieve the result faster from the OLAP cache.
Also try
1. Use different parameters in ST03 to see the two important parameters aggregation ratio and records transferred to F/E to DB selected.
2. Use the program SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS (Performance of BW infocubes) to see the aggregation ratio for the cube. If the cube does not appear in the list of this report, try to run RSRV checks on the cube and aggregates.
Go to SE38 > Run the program SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS
It will shown dimension Vs Fact tables Size in percent.If you mean speed of queries on a cube as performance metric of cube,measure query runtime.
3. To check the performance of the aggregates,see the columns valuation and usage in aggregates.
Open the Aggregates...and observe VALUATION and USAGE columns.
"---" sign is the valuation of the aggregate. You can say -3 is the valuation of the aggregate design and usage. ++ means that its compression is good and access is also more (in effect, performance is good). If you check its compression ratio, it must be good. -- means the compression ratio is not so good and access is also not so good (performance is not so good).The more is the positives...more is useful the aggregate and more it satisfies the number of queries. The greater the number of minus signs, the worse the evaluation of the aggregate. The larger the number of plus signs, the better the evaluation of the aggregate.
if "-----" then it means it just an overhead. Aggregate can potentially be deleted and "+++++" means Aggregate is potentially very useful.
In valuation column,if there are more positive sign it means that the aggregate performance is good and it is useful to have this aggregate.But if it has more negative sign it means we need not better use that aggregate.
In usage column,we will come to know how far the aggregate has been used in query.
Thus we can check the performance of the aggregate.

4. Run your query in RSRT and run the query in the debug mode. Select "Display Aggregates Found" and "Do not use cache" in the debug mode. This will tell you if it hit any aggregates while running. If it does not show any aggregates, you might want to redesign your aggregates for the query.
Also your query performance can depend upon criteria and since you have given selection only on one infoprovider...just check if you are selecting huge amount of data in the report
Check for the query read mode in RSRT.(whether its A,X or H)..advisable read mode is X.
5. In BI 7 statistics need to be activated for ST03 and BI admin cockpit to work.
By implementing BW Statistics Business Content - you need to install, feed data and through ready made reports which for analysis.

You can go to T-Code DB20 which gives you all the performance related information like

Buffer Pools
Tablespaces etc
use tool RSDDK_CHECK_AGGREGATE in se38 to check for the corrupt aggregates
If aggregates contain incorrect data, you must regenerate them.

You can find out whether an aggregate is usefull or useless you can find out through a proccess of checking the tables RSDDSTATAGGRDEF*
Run the query in RSRT with statistics execute and come back you will get STATUID... copy this and check in the table...
This gives you exactly which infoobjects it's hitting, if any one of the object is missing it's useless aggregate.

Itunes is taking up too much hard drive space on pc? what do I do?

I love the 20 gb ipod i recently got but it now with just 120 songs seems to have taken up too much space on pc hard-drive (ibm) If i allow it to compress to library what will happen to those songs when i re sync? Guess Im afraid theyll disappear from ipod itself.

Bridge memory leak/using too much ram

I just built a new PC tower for business use and installed PS, ID, LR, and BR CC trials. I already have all of these (CS5) on my personal laptop, all work fine. Bridge on the new tower has been using WAY too much ram/caching too much and crashing everything. I'd changed cache preferences, purged the cache several times, and within days it is back at it again. PC specs: 8 core AMD processor, 16GB ram, 2x 3TB HDD
This is being used to show photos, edit, burn and print at events. I cannot keep closing bridge every half hour to keep my computer running. Right now bridge is NOT keeping 100% previews in cache, exporting cache to folders, cache size is about 25,000. If bridge is going to crash every half hour on a machine with 16GB of ram, while CS5 ran fine on my laptop with only 4GB something is seriously wrong. At this point I don't know if I should actually subscribe to CC or just move my CS5 to this new computer.

I have tried to analize better what happens. In the dashboard I only have a calendar, a calculator, a clock and one postit (but there is nothing writen on it). If I use something in the dashboard, for example, the calculator, and I do some multiplications, after a couple of minutes the use of memory of the dashboard starts to increase. I closed any other program and in some minutes I have sen how it increased until I stopped the process when it was using more than 2GB! (you can see it in the picture). It's very strange! Too much RAM consumption in Photoshop CC 2014.

Hi people,
Since the update to Photoshop CC 2014 I'm having serious problems with the amount of RAM used by Photoshop.
When opening a file (only) 245 MB big, Photoshop uses around 3.5 GB of RAM. As a result my PC is extremely slow.
This was never the case in previous versions. Files made in previous versions are now hard to work on in the CC 2014 version.
Some bigger files are now useless. It takes forever to open them and impossible to work on because of this RAM issue.
I can not open other apps or even browsers at the same time anymore, because Photoshop consumes too much RAM.
Is it normal Photoshop uses 3.5 GB RAM while the file is that small?
When comparing with other Adobe (CC 2014) software only Photoshop uses that amount of RAM.

you can see the minimum requirements of RAM:
Photoshop CS5:            1GB
Photoshop CS6:            1GB
Photoshop CC:             1GB
Photoshop CC 2014:     2GB (8 GB recommended)
OK, new versions need more RAM, I understand. But in my case it seems like 6 GB is not enough.
And I have the feeling even 8 GB won't be enough too.
Can someone please tell me if there's a problem with Photoshop CC 2014, will this be solved?
Or is this normal behaviour, and should I buy more RAM?
Buying more RAM is of course the easiest answer to solve this.
But don't you think the jump from 1 GB to (minimum) 8 GB RAM is very big?
And like I said, I don't think 8 GB will cover it too. Then how much will be enough?

Too much information

Hello everybody,First of all I have to say that I'm not a Netapp expert as you will see.After some time without receivng the autosupport, with the help of NetApp support we solved that problem.Now I receive daily one mail with performance data and one mail fron each storage. Each mail contains about 20 files. Some of them compressed and some plain text files. Too much information. Also I supose ver complete information. But I can't analyze daily those files.The problem that I have is that I'm not an expert.In our IT Dept we are two people and we receive similar information from other resources: Backup copies results, VmWare chenges of status, and so on.When we receive those mails we only check if in the boy of the e-mail some error is metioned.I wonder if NetApp (our storages) is capable to send me an e-mail only with relevant error messages. Please undestand me. All this information is very useful to solve problems and know the storage status, but is too much information if I need only to notice that "there is a problem". Excuse me for this "simple" problem and my poor English. Thank you all. Daniel

Reporting time taking too much time

Check if the IC data is compressed or not?Compression will increase the performance of the query.
Check for the stats info using ST03 and analyse what need to be done .creating aggregates etc..
Use ST03N -> BW System load values to recognize the problem. Use the number given in table 'Reporting - InfoCubes:Share of total time (s)' to check if one of the columns %OLAP, %DB, %Frontend shows a high number in all InfoCubes.
You need to run ST03N in expert mode to get these values
based on the analysis and the values taken from the above - Check if an aggregate is suitable or setting OLAP etc.
Check the read mode for the query. recommended is H.
If the Query is built on the top of MP then
- including characteristic 0INFOPROV when you design the query for the MultiProvider so that you can filter by InfoProvider.
- Do not use more than 10 InfoProviders when you define a MultiProvider. If a number of InfoProviders are being read by a query at the same time, it can take a while for the system to calculate the results.

Photshop Elements 9 Interface has too much contrast

Hi. I like the new version 9. But I don't like the interface. Why did they change it. It was great in Photoshop Elements 7. And they even had a option to adjust the appearance option. Not now though. To me it has too much contrast. Why did they have to leave out that option. The new interface is too bright and too dark. Oh well. I guess I will have to get use to it. I wish CS4 had a interface like Photoshop 7. Here's a screenshot of Photoshop 7.

Hi. I will get the new version. But I just wish it could have the option to change the interface like Elements 7. The best looking version in my opinion. They should have made CS5 look like Elements 7 too. Black interface is the new thing. Not dull dingy gray like CS5 is. It looks like the Windows XP classic themes. Boring. I like subtle black like beautiful Elements 7.

Compressor eating up too much cpu

hi guys,
everytime i use compressor on my macbook pro i7 17 inch, my final cut gets very choppy as well as other apps running. I think its because compressor is eating up too much of my CPU power. is there a way that I can still compress stuff in the background while setting it to be using less CPU?

A reference movie refers to every frame of every clip in the project. If any of those clips are in use in another open application, you're going to see a performance hit of some kind. Try exporting your timeline as a self-contained movie first. There are reasons why reference movies are efficient, this may not be one of them.

Too much meta data when importing to Flickr

I've noticed that when I export a photo directly to Flickr it seems to carry with it a TON of useless meta data. It happens when I use the Flickr export plug-in as well as updating to Flickr from their site. Here is an example of too much data (basically everything after Compression):

If I retouch the photo in Photoshop then everything below image length is not include (which is my preference). Here is an example:
