Too much "energy saving"?
Just wondering. My Mac is set up to put hard drives to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. I'm working on a project with an external HD as well, and the way I'm working, having to leave the computer to come back, the hard drives are continually going to sleep, only to be woken again. I may be saving energy this way (or possibly not) but my real concern is the impact of this on the drives. Putting the question of energy saving aside, is there potential damage or wear to a hard drive if it so frequently goes to sleep? Is it better for the drives if I change the default to perhaps one hour of in-use before the drives are put to sleep?

Contrary to Kiraly's prediction, I am not going to add fuel to the debate; rather, I would recommend what I do: I adjust the Energy Saver settings as needed. For instance, if I am rendering or encoding video and know if will take a while, I slide/change everything to "never". I do the same thing if I am creating a new bootable clone or any other work which should have the Mac working, not sleeping, especially if I intend to walk away. Once it's done, I re-adjust the settings to my liking (which echoes my work flow).

It mostly depends on the camera. Some cameras have a Transfer Mode, which does not attempt to charge while transferring pictures. does yours have such a setting?
Alternatively you can try to plug a powered USB hub between the camera and the USB connector so the power is provided by the HUB rather than the iPad.
Other than that, yes the Memory card reader may be a better option assuming your Camera uses Secure Digital (SD) type memory cards. -
How do I fix the error message that a USB is taking up too much energy on my Macbook Pro?
Whenever I plug in my iPhone5 to my Macbook Pro, an error message comes up saying that "the USB is taking too much power and will be automatically disconnected".
Purchase a powered hub and plug into that and plug the powered hub into the Mac. Although an iPhone should not be causing those messages unless you have an older Macbook Pro.

"A USB device is drawing too much power..." External Harddrive
My 15" Macbook Pro, OS X, 10.6.8, 2GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB memory keeps booting my 1 TB Seagate external harddrive off because it is drawing too much energy. It's done this repeatedly for about two weeks, and now it won't appear on the desktop (while it still whirs when I attach it and the LED comes on). I checked how much energy it's drawing in the System Profiler. 500, then very little after I restarted both machines, and then too much again. I tried connecting it with an identical harddrive's cable (my housemate has the same model), and it wouldn't register then, either.
...I suspect it's the harddrive as opposed to my MBP! Or I hope it is, and not a problem with my USB ports or anything like that. I'm surprised because the Seagate is connected to the mains... But if it is the Mac, how would I go about checking to know if it is? (My Wacom Bamboo is working fine.)
Anyone with any ideas, suggestions? Anything else I need to inform you guys of?:-) use your room mate's and do it!
pretty old drive, is it makeing clicking noises? try re repairting it before you go erasing but I think yoru system is giving you some sound advice. but I would go further in saying it's either too full or too old and is on it's last legs.
If you are afraid you're going to be loosing some important data that you haven't backed up get DiskWarrior as this has saved me from loosing my hair a few years back when my HDD crashed.

if you do get this, be sure to be picky on the things you keep as it will not always work and it sounds like your hard drive is on it's last legs. Imagine a door slowly closing everytime it spins up. -
Using an older, second-issue iPad, I can download images into it from my camera. I cannot move them out of the iPad into a thumb drive. The message I receive is that the thumb drives require too much energy to make the transfer. What can I do?
Thats how its designed. in order to export your images or videos, the best method might be by connecting the iPad to your computer, or directly to the thumb drive connected to your computer, not to the iPad. Then is as simple as drag and drop. The other method could be sending them by email or uploading via a cloud service but that will take more time do get it done.

When I try to connect my camera directly to my iPad with Retina, I get a message along the lines that the device being connected is taking too much energy and cannot be connected.
How can I connect my camera to my iPad?
SD Card works fine, but there are times I may want to just download my images directly from the camera instead.
Is anyone else getting this type of message?What app is on your ipad now for opening .doc and .txt files? Pages should do that, at least .doc.

Yet another temporary freezing problem, energy saving related, maybe
I've followed uncountable suggestions about this issue, but none seem to be quite the same situation, and none of the suggestions I tried made any difference so far.
History: MBP 17" June/2009, 8GB RAM, 500GB Seagate with sudden movement protection, started life as 10.5.7, done at least three fresh reinstalls of SL. The problem was present on the second SL install (the one I really used in production for about a year), but I solved it somehow by following uncountable Google suggestions at the time. Didn't take not of the magic one, because the problem wasn't so predictable at the time, or I didn't know enough about it, and also because I only noticed the problem was gone after a couple of weeks of normal use. Unfortunately, some time ago my filesystem went nuts on a kernel panic and, though I was able to move things back in place from lost+found, a few things wouldn't work as they should, so I went for another fresh reinstall. After I started to use the new system the problem showed up again, but I haven't being able to find a fix for it again. Current system (10.6.4) and patches regularly updated, though I tend to delay a reboot to avoid putting together all my usual windows/applications in the correct desktop/spaces. Maybe the only continuously running extension I have is Growl, since I tend to more heavily use the Unix part of the Mac through MacPorts (latex, tcpdump, nmap, bash scripts, emacs and so on). Recently I installed M$ Office, but normally I prefer OpenOffice (does M$ Office install some sort of extension?)
Frequency: I'm almost sure it is triggered by something related to energy saving regarding turning off the screen, but it doesn't happen every time. When I'm giving a class, the machine runs on battery, the settings for screen off are shorter and if I take too long to generate some input (key press or touchpad action), the problem tends to happen. Interestingly, it's particularly more frequent when I'm giving classes:-):-), but it is happening even on my desk with power on. I'm inclined to think there's a "window of opportunity" for the bug to happen, maybe between screen dim and screen off (a few minutes?). My settings are currently at 15 minutes for the screen to go off, for both power adaptor and battery operation, but that's an attempt to lower the chances of this happening during class, which is terrible. They used to be at only a few minutes of inactivity.
Symptoms: if I try to do anything with the machine past some period of inactivity, maybe during that window I mentioned above, there's a high chance of the bug being triggered. The system responds quickly to clicking a window, but applications don't seem to receive the focus of attention; I notice that the window frame of an application doesn't get darker when I try to select it. On a Terminal, the prompt remains as a rectangular frame instead of a filled block (I use white characters on dark background), and no matter how much I try, I cannot give the focus of attention to the visible shell on Terminal, so I can't issue any shell command to try and find out things. Changing workspaces may happen, but at a very slow speed, maybe many seconds after issueing the command. Eventually the system recovers itself, usually after several minutes, and then all user interface events that I tried during the freeze were remembered and are played sequently as fast as the machine can handle, sometimes doing unwanted things in the process due to objects receiving the wrong action (some sort of desynchronization). The outstanding event that preceeds recovering is the screen being progressively blackened and then lit again, but not instantly as in moving the pointer to a hot corner. The screen transition happens during half to a full second, after which all queued events are played at the fastest possible speed. After that the system is completely normal. In the beginning I have hard-rebooted the machine, because I didn't know it would eventually recover itself. During class I also don't have the patience to wait for long (and neither do students:-)).
Solutions already tried:
- disabling sms through pmset. I know it has to be disabled with this particular drive, otherwise conflicts with the drive's own mechanism. It is currently off, and had been on for a while till I refound the suggestion through google.
- re-indexing Spotlight's DB. No change.
- fixing file permissions (I don't see any possible relation, but anyway...)
Don't recall what else is missing on this list, because I couldn't find a concrete suggestion for this scenario, so I believe that's about it.
It looks to be more frequent now, to the point that I decided to stop work just to write this long msg, in the hope that someone else may have seen such behaviour and have something new for me to try.
Thanks in advance.The problem is that the initial backup is incredibly slow and hasn't worked yet. I right click on the dock icon and start the backup process which after working out what needs to be copied progress's in very slow erratic bursts.
It's hard to offer a definite solution. But there are some simple things you could try to improve the backup speed such as excluding TM backup disk from spotlight indexing (privacy tab in spotlight prefs), and excluding unecessary files and folder from the backup (e.g. applications) in TM prefs. -
My late 2009 iMac is running slow, particularly on Mail, more so since I upgraded to Yosemite. I have run an Etrecheck but it doesn't mean too much to me. If anyone can point me to what I need to do I'll be very grateful.

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

I cant use the iphone its useless now :S i think its a software problem but i restored it many times
I suffer same. AppleCare can't seem to solve the problem. I did a restore from backup. Then I did a restore as new phone (virgin). Then I did a restore as a new device and then backed up from a stored backup (which does not replace media). To no avail. Some days it works fine, and on others it's extremely bothersome. The major symptoms:
1. It can take 5+ seconds to delete a photo.
2. It can take 10+ seconds for the camera app to activate. In many instances, the moment is long gone.
3. Switching from camera to video can take 5+ seconds.
4. Saving a photo that's been optimized in iOS 5 can take 30 seconds. Absurd.
Note that Photos and Camera aren't the only affected applications. What'sApp can have the same issues on occasion. Voice Memos don't respond like they should, either. I suspect that there's some behind-the-scenes operations with network feed to which iOS gives its full attention (contrary to the UX getting full attention is is historically the case). This makes the user interface painfully slow at times — and, as most of us here would agree — painfully annoying. This might have to do with changes designed around iCloud, but I'm not even (yet) using it.
The bottom line is that what used to be a quick, pretty good phone camera is now totally lackluster and unreliable for fast shots. Sometimes I think Apple spends too much time worrying about form and not enough about function. -
Error message in iDVD - too much motion in the menu?
i keep getting this error message:
"The following warnings and errors were found during the validation of the current project:
- There seems to be too much motion menu content in your project. Correct this problem before you continue burning this project."
even if i take off all the motion in the menus (im guessing that's dragging a video into a loadzone) i still cant burn the dvd
any ideas?
how can i still incorporate the videos in the menus tho? (cos i really like that, just looping in the menu)

mikiWelcome to the Apple Discussions. The total playing time of any videos or audio in menus must be less than 15 minutes. Check the Info pane for the project and see what the menus are listed at. I believe if you add a 4 minute audio track for a menu and only have 30 seconds being used the entire 4 minutes is used. So if you want to use just a part of a song, copy it to the desktop from iTunes and use Garageband or a 3rd party editor like Amadeus Pro to cut out just that portion you want to use.
If you've removed some of the media from the menus and it still lists as too much, use the Advanced menu to delete encoded assets and try saving as a disk image. If it saves OK you can play the disk image with DVD Player to preview the encoding before burning to disk with Disk Utility (at the slowest speed possible).

I've been using Firefox as the default browser on my systems (both Windows and Linux and in 32 or 64 editions) and for some reason Firefox consumes too much memory. Now trust me. I have a very fast machine and so I get very frustrated with this issue as it seems to be a Firefox only issue. Its true that I might have up to 40 tabs open at times but Chrome can handle it Safari can handle it and even Explorer can handle it. Sometimes Firefox's memory consumption peaks to an astonish 3GB of memory which is unheard of. My machine is so fast that I can have up to 10 programs open (Maya, Photoshop, Cinema 4d, Autodesk Suites MySql server and PHP5, MS Office) and still be able to work with them all at the same time, but Firefox crashes suddenly and that is very annoying as I've customized it to my needs adding extensions and making sure all my online baking is done using Firefox. This memory issue is far more noticeable when I'm using Windows 7 64 bits. The same amount of tabs and extensions opened on Linux have no effect on memory and I often switch to Linux just to be able to enjoy a smooth Firefox browsing experience. I've invested so much money into building an amazing machine and it takes 10 minutes of having Firefox running to crash it all completely. I've lost track of the amount of times I've lost my profile and had to rebuild all my customizations but I can stand that. What is beyond my comprehension is the fact that when I'm using Windows XP or Linux the memory used by Firefox is far lower than when I'm using Windows 7 or 8.1 .
Can you help me out? I really love Firefox and would like to keep using it as my default browser but can't afford losing my profile info every time Firefox crashes or having Windows Explorer crashing and losing all the work I'm doing on other software programs.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension:

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

weblogic 10.3.6
IDM suite 11.1.1.5
Trying to create domain using Oracle\Middleware\Oracle_IDM1\bin\config.bat and domain creation taking too much time and in the log file i am getting below message

But process won't move forward, it just hangs with Progress 0% only. I checked similar errors in the forums and it is due to path settings but i tried to remove the existing path settings but no luck. If you guys have any idea what went wrong...?

RavindherI don't have any CLASSPATH variable and I have only Path variable but nothing was specified to any oracle product except DB(D:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\bin;)
Even i set java is 1.6 using JAVA_HOME earlier and then removed but no difference. Not sure what went wrong.
