Too Much Stuff

This is a Ps question, but I have the same problem with AE, bridge, and others.  In the past I had Ps CS2 and AE CS3 (which came with Bridge 3).  I have upgraded to CS5 Production Suite which includes Ps, AE, etc. but, of course, all CS5.  Prior to installation, I used the Windows control panel to uninstall CS2 and CS3.  Then, I loaded in CS5.  Today, as I examine what's in my system in My Computer>C>program files (64bit) and Program files (x86) (32 bit), I seem to have a fully functional Ps CS5 32 bit as well as Ps CS5 64 bit.  I also have what seem like bits and pieces of the old CS2 and CS3 programs.
Am I right to assume that these just got left over during the uninstall process and I can simply delected them from the program files?
I am perplexed at having two fully functional Ps CS5 programs, one for 32 bit and another for 64.  I have looked in the control panel for a way to uninstall the 32 bit version but it only offers to uninstall the entire suite.
Although everything is working fine, I would still like to clear out the stuff I don't need so as to maintain maximum usable space on the HDD.
How do I do this?  Thanks in advance, Dale

Oops, I meant to type the word UNinstall just after the word "don't".  I got it backwards.  I meant to say "...don't uninstall the 32 bit version..."
I only ran through the Photoshop CS5 installer twice, back in May, and I didn't remember seeing there was a way to install or uninstall one of the 32 / 64 bit pair either, but I've been told since then that it's possible.

  • The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake.  The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion.  I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over.  I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

Thank you so much for the help!  I had heard bad things about MacKeeper and I don't want to screw up my macbook  any more than it already is!  I will do as you suggest.  Do you believe this is the best solution for the problem I described?
Should I load my Adobe Creative Suite 6 (in the cloud version) on an external hard drive?
I am so tired of this spinning wheel....should I avoid putting the CS6 on my macbook pro altogether?
I have it on my desk top mac, but wanted to be able to take the photo editing with me when I am "out and about".  I know I should probably buy the ipad, which would transport much easier, but even the ipad probably doesn't have the capacity to hold all the Adobe CS6 apps, correct?

  • Way too much stuff, need more locations

Yes, I have a 1TB drive - that's too full. I had to move a lot of stuff to a new 1TB drive. In order to find the moved stuff I have to go one by one to 'locate' and all is good in the world. Is there an easier way? Because I would LOVE to know it. Apologies if this has been answered before, I searched and couldn't find.

    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.

  • Too much stuff running in the background

I have a Casio Commando Gz'One.  I installed an App called Advanced Task Killer to be able to turn unnecessary things off that are constantly running the background.  What I have noticed is even right after I run Advanced Task Killer, there is A LOT of stuff that keeps turning itself back on.  How can I permanently turn off apps/stuff that I rarely if ever use?
As an example of Apps/stuff that constantly is on and turning itself back on in the background........My Verizon Mobile, Gallery, Camera, Desk Cradle, Mobile IM, Skype Mobile, Slacker, City ID, etc etc etc.
I'd prefer to not have all this stuff constantly running in the background and using up memory.  I notice that when I don't run Advanced Task Killer for a while my phone responds slower and slower and the longer I leave things be, my available memory available goes down......
    How do I do this?

Thanks, Ann, that's a great article, very helpful to a veteran Windows user like me, who isn't used to RAM being managed this way by the OS.
I  just did a quick check on my Samsung Stratosphere using Menu > Applications > Memory usage, then tapping Running. There's a lot of stuff running, and I do wonder about some of it. Slacker Radio, for instance, which I've never used and don't intend to use, has been running for 24 hours and is using 2.3 MB of memory. When I press and hold it, I get a screen informing me that it was started by an application called Tap to stop, and a warning, "Service started by application. Stopping service may cause application to fail." If I throw caution to the winds and tap Stop anyway, I get another message, "Stop this system service? Some features of your phone may stop working correctly until you turn it off and then on again," at which point I grab caution back from the winds and hit Cancel.
So, granted that I should just leave things alone and "let Android be Android," as the writer of the article you linked to says, I'm still curious. What the heck is the application called "Tap to stop"? I don't see it anywhere. What feature of my phone would fail if I forced Slacker Radio to stop?
Thanks again for the article. It's fun to learn about a new OS.

  • Won't start properly because of too much stuff on desktop - how do I delete stuff if it won't start up now?

I was trying to move photos to an external hard drive because my startup disk was full and I accidentally dropped them onto the desktop. Now my computer won't start properly because of all the stuff on the desktop and I don't know how I can fix that?

Start up in safe mode. Hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting and check that you can start up in safe mode. Then, choose all the items you want to transfer in Desktop by pressing Command and A keys, and move them to the external drive.
If you have any file in Desktop that you don't want to transfer, simply click it while pressing the Command key

  • Too much stuff in "other"?

Hi - I have a 30gb and 60gb video ipod - they both sync to the same itunes.
They both show the same amount (17gb) in "music". But the 30gb has 6.66gb in "other", while the 60gb only has a few megs in "other".
For the life of me, I can't figure out what that stuff is. Neither ipod is enabled for disk usage, but I did check them and neither of them has anything when viewed as a disk except apple's sample files.
How do I find out what this stuff is and get rid of it?
    Thanks,
    cf

Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Too much stuff popping up

I have a cookie in my Macbook Pro that I can't get rid of.  When I click to go to a page, just for an instant I see "123Srv.com" and then I'm taken to a page that I didn't request.  This has become very annoying and I have searched the computer for some sort of file relating to this but nothing shows up.  Anyone had experience with 123Srv.com?
I have another problem and don't know if it's connected to this or not.  Any time I visit a website certain words have two lines under them.  If I accidently move my mouse across them an ad pops up that wants to take me to another site.  Is there a way to stop this?
I'm using the browser Safari but the same thing happens when I use Google Chrome.
Thanks for some much needed help.

Considering that this problem is occurring using two separate browsers, it is likely that your router's DNS settings have been maliciously changed. That problem has been growing rapidly. To fix it will require resetting your router using its hardware reset option, followed by configuring it again.
When doing so, be sure to select the option to prevent setup over its WAN port. Different routers use different terminology for remote administration, so be sure to find the correct setting and disable that option.

  • Too much "stuff" to install Leopard

I've backup my iPhoto Library & iTunes library to external HD. Now I delete both from my HD? Then after Leopard is installed, I drag both of them from the external HD to MacBook Pro HD? Just being extra cautious!

Select the disk in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu; if the disk's format is listed as Mac OS Extended, you can simply delete the folders from the hard disk prior to installing Mac OS X 10.5. You may want to use the instructions here and here to keep the iTunes and iPhoto libraries on that drive; if you don't have enough free space on the original drive to install Mac OS X 10.5 you probably won't have enough to effectively use it.

  • Office 2010 downloads too much stuff to users' roaming profiles, making it go over the 30MB size limit

Hey, we recently rolled out to Office 2010 at my workplace.
On the student segment we've activated the 30MB roaming profile size limit, and we've found that a bunch of students have had trouble with this now because Office 2010 seems to download around 8MB of files to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates\LiveContent, which
occasionally makes the profile go over the 30MB size limit.
Is there any easy way to prevent this LiveContent from being downloaded?? Anything I can set in the installation transformation file, or preferably with a registry setting or something?

You had mentioned a policy to disable synchronization of the LiveContent folders.
I think it would be this GP admin template setting, it's what we use for this kind of requirement:
    File Name: UserProfiles.admx
Policy Setting Name: Exclude directories in roaming profile
    Scope: User
    Policy Path: System\User Profiles
    Registry Information: HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System!ExcludeProfileDirs
Supported On: At least Windows 2000
Help Text: This policy setting lets you exclude folders that are normally included in the user's profile.
As a result, these folders do not need to be stored by the network server on which the profile resides and do not follow users to other computers.
Note: When excluding content from the profile you should try to exclude the narrowest set of data that will address your needs.
For example, if there is one application with data that should not be roamed then add only that application's specific folder under the AppData\Roaming folder rather than all of the AppData\Roaming folder to the exclusion list.By default, the Appdata\Local
and Appdata\LocalLow folders and all their subfolders such as the History, Temp, and Temporary Internet Files folders are excluded from the user's roaming profile. In operating systems earlier than Microsoft Windows Vista, only the History, Local Settings,
Temp, and Temporary Internet Files folders are excluded from the user's roaming profile by default. If you enable this policy setting, you can exclude additional folders. If you disable this policy setting or do not configure it, only the default folders are
    excluded.
Note: You cannot use this policy setting to include the default folders in a roaming user profile.

  • 3000 old emails back to 2009 came along for the ride when I transferred aol address book to Mac address book. All attempts to delete en masse have no results. Too much stuff. Procedures?

3000 old emails, some as far back as 2009, came along for the ride when I transferred aol address book to imac address book. Can't find the magic key to permanently delete them. Ideas on procedures?

    I'd try deleting 50 at a time - 3000 is a stretch.
By the way, double posting is not at all helpful.

  • Answer: too much stuff?

That is what Lyle Lovett said to Delbert Mcklinton - John Prine; so that may be the answer here with this thing stuck behind the old banjo and reverbs.
Intel chip Macbook: Logic current v.
What's going on: the environment is behaving badly. After a successful couple of runs at the setup manager - it recognizes the MIDI devices fine - but the environment doesn't at all in the program itself.
So it's not AMS, and the M-Audio driver is Intel compat.
It's not just a simple matter of adding a multi-inst. either because the Ozonic controller has specific ports (internal/external software routed MIDI). Ports which Logic recognizes easily on the PPC's, but not on the Macbook.
Here I'm getting nothing but the premapped drums and gen. MIDI device (yes I tried setting up a multi-inst. and it didn't give me the correct I/O).
So where shall I stick this dilemna other than the closet?

    Muzak,
Good to see you back! FWIW, Logic 7 for PPC never did a good job at translating the devices defined in the AMS setup into Logic's environment. I found that I had to go through the motions twice (setup manager 2x). And it only added to the fun when I found that all of my multi-instruments had pre-programmed program changes. Who defined them? 'Twasn't me... It was AMS! Nice!
    Not.
Man, in the old days of OS 9, Logic 2, 3, & 4 running under OMS, all you had to do was revise your OMS setup, select "update" in the environment, and blammo, your devices were all updated in the MIDI layer. It was so easy! These days it's one step forward and one step back because this ßchies (sp? sonther?) isn't beta-tested well enough. But I digress.
My best advice to you would be to totally dispense with AMS altogether. It'll recognize your USB-based MIDI interface(s) and they'll show up in the environment (provided the interface's drivers are good). Otherwise, define nothing in AMS. Instead, go through the Neaderthanlian exercise of defining your MIDI devices from scratch in the environment. Even though doing this is like rubbing two sticks together just to get a light for your smoke, you're spared the hassle of having AMS and/or Logic screw it up for you.

  • Time machine - backing up too much stuff

I'm capturing DV video these days and it's painful, at least from a Time Machine perstpective.
I've got a camera connected to my Mac through Firewire. Video is captured by iMovie09. The files are very big (eg 15-20Gb). Once captured, I connect my external drive and I transfer the file to it.
Then if I start a backup via Time Machine, I end-up with 100Gb+ files to be saved!!!
I tried the timetracker application, but it does not seem to work (or I dont know how to use it).
How can I find out which files TM is copying and why do you thing this is happening?
    Thanks
    Yvon

timetracker is the right tool for it. its use is quite simple. you just start it and it will show you a list of available backups. you can pick one and see what was backed up.
With big files as you describe I'm not sure why you think the numbers TM is giving you are incorrect. also keep in mind that your external will also be backed up by TM unless it's on the exclusion list in TM system preferences->options.
Lastly, you might want to exclude from backups the folder on your main drive where those videos are being captured.

  • Too much authentication on my Mac. How can I disable the messages?

Got a shiny new iMac. Somehow I set it up so that I have to authenticate way too much stuff, like emptying the trash. On my Macbook all I have to authenticate is SW installation. How do I fix it do there is less authentication?

Click on the Finder to activate, select Preferences from the Finder menu, click on Advanced icon in the toolbar, uncheck the middle two options. That's all you can disable. The rest is for security purposes.

  • OIM 11g using too much memory and not releasing it when shutting down

    Hello,
we have a problem with OIM 11g using too much memory (about 5gb) and it's not releasing it at shutdown (4gb still used).
We are using a VM with RedHat Linux 5.6. Originally we had 4gb RAM + 2gb swap file. We installed Admin Server, OAM, OIM and SOA on that machine but quickly realised we couldn't run all 4 programs at once in 6gb. AdminServer could run with 2 other products, but it was a tight fit in memory.
So we increased the RAM to 8gb (still 2gb swap file). But then our problem occured : I start the Admin Server (2.7gb total memory used), then OAM (4.6gb total memory used) and then OIM. After it started the server is now using 9.6gb of memory (~300mb of free memory) ! The problem gets even better : after I shut down everything (OIM, OAM, admin server) the "top" command show that there is still 4gb of memory used even tho nothing else is running on the server ! There is absolutely no other process (other than root stuff) running and no other users connected to the machine. After a reboot, it shows 400mb of memory used. I tried restarting the programs and it did the same thing.
Our intuition is that there might be a memory leak or some bug in OIM that might use up almost all the free memory and it's not releasing it upon shutdown. It might have been there before we increased the memory but have not noticed it since memory was already tight.
Anyone encountered the same problem ? Any idea ? Any suggestion to narrow down the problem ?
    Thank you

You can adjust the memory settings for WLS by editing the setSOADomainEnv.sh file that can be found in your /middleware/user_projects/domains/<domain>/bin/ folder. There is an argument called PORT_MEM_ARGS which is used to set your Java memory arguments. This way you can decrease/increase the amount of memory used by each managed server.
I usually type "ps -ef | grep oracle" to see what processes are running by the oracle user. This way the output doesn't get cluttered with root processes.

  • After Effects Ram Preview Drops Frames , Using Strangely Too Much Ram

    System Specs :
         CPU : Core i7 4770k
         Memory : 16 GB DDRIII
         Graphic Card : GTX 770 4GB RAM
         Storage : 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD
         OS : Windows 7 SP1
         Using After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
NOTE : NOT ANY ADDITIONAL HARDWARE IS ATTACHED TO MY PC . NO SOUND RELATED EQUIPMENT NOR CAPTURE CARD NOR ANY THING ELSE
    Hi there
As you Already Don't know I'm an After effects Specialist Using it for quite long time . There is an Ancient Problem with CS6 CC versions . I have a short Small size 1080p Video , about 8 MB , I drag it into project panel and then put it into timeline hence it creates a sequence . There are no Effects and nothing added to timeline , just a small simple video . The Strange Problem is when I click "0" for ram preview , The video starts playing and the green bar above timeline starts to fill . When Ram preview Finishes and plays the video from beginning I See there are several frames Between which are not being loaded to Ram ! The video plays RGB color bar instead of main video and when I check the Green bar above Timeline I see that those frames are being dropped and there is no Green bar above them !
I have had this problem several times before but this time it is too important and the problem should be solved . What is obvious is that some frames are not being rendered or are being deleted after render !
Another Strange problem is that when I open Task manager , It shows AE uses around 10 GB ! of RAM when I press "0" for Ram previewing this video !
So there is a Logical explanation here , Somehow when I do ram preview this video it uses extra ordinary too much ram so AE is unable to load the full video (8 MB) into Ram and hence deletes some of frames .
most of my videos have not this problem and use acceptable amount of ram .I've had this issue with some of my videos till now .
Listen carefully : "This has nothing to do with AE preferences or low memory or plugins . because there is nothing wrong with any individual components of may hardware or software . I have far more than enough RAM for a 8MB video . My Memory has no hardware or software problem . I tested them and if there was any problem with memory or other hardware that should have affected other applications . I have the most recent AE version . I have the most Recent windows updates and drivers . I have a Clean virus free system , and as a computer engineer this strange AE problem is rarely caused by viruses , trust me . I have not any hardware instead of ones a normal PC has . I have not any problem with my whole entire system configuration because I have benchmarked my PC with several up to date softwares . I have tested my PC with almost any STRESS TESTING solutions available for really long period of time , 3 days by IDA64 . Not any driver conflict , dll missing , registry problem have been discovered , as I know perfectly how to solve them ."
I asked some of my friend whom are expert in AE . I handed them my videos and Watched ALL OF THEM HAD THE SAME ISSUE ! So the problem isn't related to my Local PC . What i believe is that there is some malfunctioning or miss coded part in AE source code that decides to reserve such a huge strange amount of ram for such a tiny 8MB video . The point is that the AE works fine , no crash or any problem report . So the AE it Self decides to allocate such huge amount of ram and thinks it is correct ! So I think this is a work around that AE developers in adobe are using to bypass a problem or conflict ! by Using more amount of RAM . I think that there might be some miss understanding between the AE and my installed codec . I installed MEGA CODEC PACK on my PC to enable some new codec supports , and so are some of Windows default de/encoders changed to new ones . I think there shouldn't be any problem But there is something wrong between AE and de/encoder modules !
Please any one with any suggestion , I really appreciate your advices .

    ###UPDATED###
Well thank you guys for your patience ...
as you considered I forgot to mention the codec itself and other stuff ...
The video is in 1080p , 35 sec long , it is a green screen shot , this video is directly downloaded from YouTube and plays perfectly on all tested PCs . here are detailed info :
    Format                                   : MPEG-4
    Format profile                          : Base Media
    File size                                 : 8.55 MiB

    Format profile                           : [email protected]
    Codec ID                                 : avc1
Codec ID/Info                            : Advanced Video Coding
    Bit rate                                    : 1 927 Kbps
    Width                                      : 1 920 pixels
    Height                                     : 1 080 pixels
    Frame rate mode                      : Constant
    Frame rate                               : 30.000 fps
    Color space                              : YUV
    Chroma subsampling                 : 4:2:0
    Bit depth                                  : 8 bits
    Scan type                                 : Progressive
NOTICE : This video is just for testing the lighting and etc , and so the Sampling and other specs are not considered for broadcast .
I think you hit the point ! Thats K-lite codec pack installed on every machine which the video is tested on ! The point is whats wrong with it ?! I have had never ever any problem with this codec pack !!!
The deadly question : So what are the alternative ways to work with codecs that AE doesn't support ?! because installing codec looks simple and sufficient !
