Hello,
How can I not have the iPhone display a text message on the home screen when I receive a text?

When you are using the iPhone, you can't.
When the iPhone or the iPhone's screen is asleep, you can turn off Show SMS Preview so only the name of the person sending a text will be shown on the screen, but you must enable the Passcode Lock feature to turn Show SMS Preview off.

Entering description of event into iCal, pasted too much text into event, responded with The server responded with an error. Preferences is greyed out, and window pop up comes up every time I open iCal and doesn't go away. Force quit, still opens. Help?

While pasting event description into iCal, accidently pasted too much text, causing "The server responded with an error" pop up. This pop us includes the event description, but because of the mass amount of text, the window shoots off the screen to the bottom, so if there was an exit red "x" available, it isn't visible or accessible. The iCal>preferences is greyed out and I have force quit and it pops up each time I use iCal. Is this even fixable?

I am trying to add text to the I photo book inside the which indicate the boundaries but a red triangle has appeared. for indicate the boundaries for such text, however there is a small red triangle appearing to say that I have too much text.

I am trying to add text to an I photo book project. I have entered the text inside the blue lines which indicate the boundaries but have got a red triangle showing I have exceeded the text. Any ideas please?

Check the font size, if it's just a little too close to the top of the box, it will reject it.

InputStreamReader: reads too much?

}and noticed that too much text is read! I i increase chars (e.g. 4096 bytes), more additional text is read. It seems, that the read() method for the last call does not clear 'chars' and therefore has additional (old) characters in the 'chars' buffer(?). how can this be avoided?
(note: I need to read from inputstreamreader, not e.g. from a BufferedReader, as ProgressMonitorInputStream can't be used with Readers.)

Too much information

Hello everybody,First of all I have to say that I'm not a Netapp expert as you will see.After some time without receivng the autosupport, with the help of NetApp support we solved that problem.Now I receive daily one mail with performance data and one mail fron each storage. Each mail contains about 20 files. Some of them compressed and some plain text files. Too much information. Also I supose ver complete information. But I can't analyze daily those files.The problem that I have is that I'm not an expert.In our IT Dept we are two people and we receive similar information from other resources: Backup copies results, VmWare chenges of status, and so on.When we receive those mails we only check if in the boy of the e-mail some error is metioned.I wonder if NetApp (our storages) is capable to send me an e-mail only with relevant error messages. Please undestand me. All this information is very useful to solve problems and know the storage status, but is too much information if I need only to notice that "there is a problem". I need to input text from PC to iPad with large font size. Too much to ask?

Works well with PC to PC using just software likge Windows Live Messenger, but not with iPad because I haven't seen a Messenger app for iPad that can display large fonts or has custom font size option. They all use small font size that can't be changed.
I've also tried many VNC apps by writing the text in my PC to notepad and using the VNC to display the large text for iPad. Probelm is VNC's wont work well with 3G.
Is this really too much to ask from iPad?
If some app developer reads this, I'll buy an app for 50$ that has white background and can receive text sent from PC with custom font sizes. Doesn't have to have any other features. Just receive text from PC using the existing IM softwares like Windows Live etc or simple custom software.

I was wondering if you could help me out with my current situation. It seems like it is similar to your previous I/O delima. I think I might have to parse the data, but i dont know how to do that yet. I basically have to put the information from one text file into a database, and it is formatted in one way, and i need to format it a different way that SQL statements can read. My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

IMovie HD - Trouble! Video is skipping like it has too much information??

On my current iMovie HD project, the Video portion of the playback is skipping during the last song I am working on. It's almost like there is too much information during that song, but I have not added transitions, sound effects, etc to the clips.
I have tried deleting song and adding a different song, same problem. The other 30 minutes of the movie play perfectly.

Thank you Jason for responding so quickly. I clear the auto-linking and do my own linking between tables. As you said, "there's nothing smart about CR's smart links".
And I was referring to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 version 9.0.3073. The problem I initially had was linking CR to the server. Thankfully I had a lot of help from the linking forum that helped me with it. I'm running Windows 7 and it appears the operating software has two ODBC one is 32 and the other 64. In the ODBC Data Source Administrator the user DSN is set to the SQL Server.
Back to this problem. Trying to figure out the double item numbers and I have tested it with only that one particular table and did not link it to another. I also have tried it with linking it to other tables to see if somehow that could put a restriction on the information. The parameters really doesn't work here unless I'm setting it up incorrectly. Nor does the Select Expert really do what I need it to do. The options I can choose from: Itemnumber: is any value, is equal to, is not equal to, is one of... nothing gives me the option to say only choose the child if the child was purchased. And I'm not advance enough to figure out a script to do it.
Per sales order (I have the report to group by the sale order number) I need it to list the correct item that was purchased by the customer. The report pulls into the detail section of the report the parent and child item number when only the child item was ordered and not the parent.

Firefox uses too much cache when commenting in Facebook - 45MB when the text is only 1kB - why?

Firefox uses too much cache when commenting in Facebook. I wrote a comment up to 1000 characters and my PC crawled. I had to wait several times for the text to catch up with my typing. I cleared caches after entering my comment and it freed up 45MB of RAM from the firefox.exe process in Windows Task Manager. Why does Firefox use 45MB when the text is only 1kB?
Another time the firefox.exe process began at 88MB and went up to 250MB whilst writing a comment, reducing to 170MB afterwards. Firefox hogs the CPU too (I tried the CPU hogging tips but none was the solution to this), but the memory usage is the issue because the CPU would not be hogged if less data was being moved or cached.
I accept some slowness on an old 1.2GHz 512MB PC but the facebook issue is much worse than other sites.

The newest version of flash Plugin only works with Opera 9.5 beta. If you want to use flash with the stable Opera find an older version of the flash plug in.
Thanks for the hint, will keep that in mind in the case I will switch to Opera again (used it for a while because Firefox2 scrolling was bad, with 3 it is much better). Besides, there is a new flash version in the repos.

How do i get rid of "other" on macbook air? its taking up too much room

How do I get rid of the "other" storage space on my macbook air? it takes up too much on my small 64GB macbook air? I must get rid of it as I have now space to put anything on my computer.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Kernel_task is spending too much CPU and Ram

I have Macbook Pro 13' mid 2012 I bought it 9/2013 and its started to become too slow like seriously slowed when I check the Activity Monitor kernel_task spend too much RAM and CPU and because of the usage of CPU my computer becomes overheated. This what comes up when I do the EtreCheck;

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Too much power?

Hi (first post )
I have just got a new battery, and now a "funny" error occor.
When the battery runs dry of power, the computer shuts down, insted of going to the "standby mode" (don't know the word).
When I charge the battery and the computer is turned off, the computer will make 3 "bibs" when starting, and nothing is happening.
Then I turn of thte computer, and then it will start up.. Sometimes I have to "restart" it severel times, before it startes OS X.
When the computer is running, there are no problems at all!
I have done a SMU restart and a Hardware test, but nothing helps.

My theory: There is too much power on the battery, and by turning the mac on and off, it uses enough power, so the computer thinks it is all ok again.
Anyone who can help me?

Check this for help. Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
Have you done the battery update? About Battery Update 1.2.
I don't think this is a battery issue. What do you mean "Too much power?" I think I know what you mean but I would be surprised if that is the problem. Follow these directions, Determining Battery Cycle Count , and then post the following info back. Do this after the battery has reached a full charge and shows charged in the battery indicator. One tip, if you cut and paste the info like I did, be sure to remove any spaces from in front of the text or it will not display in the post.
