Too old to fix

Adobe solution to solving my problem installing element 7, is to say "buy an upgrade". That was their response to my error 1935 install problem.
A typical " we already have your money attitude".
I will cut my loses and try one of their many competitors. I'm sure their customer service will be better, it certainly could not be worst.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try zapping the PRAM:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
You can attempt removing the hard drive yourself, if it is the right iMac G5 model:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG517inchharddrive.pdf
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5_isight/imacg502i.html
If anything is different in your attempt, stop, and go to http://www.apple.com/buy/ and http://www.apple.com/usergroups/
Either an authorized service center, or a usergroup may know of someone who can do the hard drive extraction. Mind you, there is no guarantee they will get the data off, as lightning could have in the worst case scenario fried the drive controller. In that event, it will cost a lot more to recover the data. Only one source do I know that can do that, and that's http://www.drivesavers.com/
In the future, always backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Oh, and because of differences between PowerPC and Intel, I would attempt to get the data moved over to another PowerPC Mac with a Firewire drive case capable of running your applications. See my FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
And this migration tip:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=0
And good luck!

I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • "Ipod software is too old" error with ipod nano

I am having a big problem with my ipod nano. I've been working on it for a week and still have not been able to fix it. I can sync my ipod nano to my mac g4 (running OS X 10.3.9) however in the ipod settings it won't show the version of ipod software and the click buttons to restore the ipod or update it are grayed out. When I connect the ipod I get an error message "Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to your ipod because your ipod software is too old. Go to Summary tab in ipod preferences and update to get the latest software update."
As mentoined, when I do that the update is not available. I have reset the ipod multiple times, restored it, reformatted the disk etc. With the ipod blank, I discovered it does NOT give this error when I connect it to an older imac g3 (go figure) and that it correctly shows the ipod system information and allows me to update it or restore it from itunes (7.0.2). If I then plug the ipod into the G4 it gives the same error message.
The fact that it works and syncs fine with another mac leads me to believe that it's not the ipod, but my system software on the G4 that is corrupted- there must be a settings file that is bad, I just don't know which one it is. Help!!

Is it possible that you have part of an old iTunes still installed on your computer? If so, take a look at the info I pasted below from the following article:Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X
It's possible that clicking the iTunes icon in your Dock or double-clicking an iTunes icon on your desktop could open an older version of iTunes. Open iTunes from the Applications folder to be sure you are opening the right version:
    Double-click your hard disk.
    Double-click the Applications folder.
    Double-click the iTunes icon.
If you notice another copy of iTunes in the Dock after following these steps, here's a way to take care of that:
    Quit iTunes.
Drag the iTunes icon out of the Dock.
Drag the iTunes icon from the Applications folder to the Dock.

My daughter's iPhone 3gs has just been replaced by Apple. When she tried to restore her backup files she was told to upgrade to itunes 10, but she can't because her Macbook is too old to run it. What do we need to do to get all her stuff onto the new phone?

Here's what I'd do, go back to the Apple store, take the phone & computer. Ask the geniuses how to fix this since they replaced the phone. You never know, they may just update the computer for free...its happened before...can't gurantee it will happen for you, but worth a try.
Otherwise, you're looking at purchasing a retail copy of Leopard, however if her computer can handle Snow Leopard you can purchase the $29 upgrade disk & install a full copy of SL.

  • Absurdity of Pages documents being 'too old'

I understand the need for obsolescence -- whether planned or necessary -- and I'm even willing to buy again new versions of software that were perfectly good the way they were. Progress and all.
But to have my brand-new, beautiful iMac tell me that my Pages documents from 2011 are 'too old' and can't be read anymore by the iMac's Pages is simply absurd.
And the solutions offered -- OSX 9.2 users should open the 'too old' documents in Preview and cut-and-paste; or save them in Pages 9 first (although Pages 9 can't be found or downloaded anymore); or buy from a third party vendor a copy of Pages 9!! -- just seem ludicrous and unacceptable workarounds.
This isn't even treated like a 'known issue.'  At which Cupertino meeting did someone say 'but the new Pages won't recognize old Pages documents,' and someone higher up responded, 'that will be fine.'  Really??
Again, I understand we don't live in an eight-track world anymore and the roads must roll, but for all the games and gestures, the fact remains that words, text and writing remain fundamental to the computing experience.  To think that long manuscripts, detailed memos, form letters, and all manners of written history on Pages can no longer be accessed because they are 'too old' is completely unacceptable.
Sadly, programmers too often treat text like an 'object' -- something to be picked up and moved, rather than a living, breathing piece of digital 'code' that can be shaped and reshaped by the writer within the object itself.
Apple is not the only culprit: The new Microsoft Office can't read Pages either, as this insane format and upgrade war rages on.
So yes, I know there are ways around this ridiculous situation, but how does it exist to begin with?  How can Apple's Support Forum staff reply with the suggestion we go to Amazon and buy Pages 9 there??
Yes, upgrading to a new computer or operating system often means discarding older, comfortable programs. (I will miss the older 'Power PC' software, but progress is progress).  But text -- the written word -- is the most basic software that is. How could a new version of Pages not 'recognize' older versions of Pages?
It is ridiculous and an affront to millions of Apple users who stick with the company -- this is my fifth major Apple computer, not counting our iPads, iPhones and such -- but the trust I've built up with the company has never been so shaken.  How could this not be fixed, or even recognized as a problem?
    david

How can Apple's Support Forum staff reply with the suggestion
Did you contact Apple support directly? Just as an FYI, these forums are user to user only - we're just fellow users volunteering our time here.
As for Pages: when I installed the new Pages version, my older version remained intact. I have two separate versions installed; I found that the default was to open anything with the new version which I changed in the Ger Info window (back to the old one). I also found that the new version lacks several functionalities, so I am ignoring it. I will keep using the older version. Unfortunately, if you have a brand new Mac, you do not have the older version installed - how about using your iWork install DVD from your previous Mac to install the older version?

  • HT202879 since updating pages 8 to pages 9 it won't let me open saved files saying they are too old ?

I updated pages 08 to pages 09 but now if i have saved a document and try to open it it tells me the file can't be opened as it is too old. Does anyone know how to fix this ?

You have tried to open a Pages 09 document in Pages 08. You have to be particular about which app you use for which document. Pages 09 will always try to be tha app to open all your Pages documents. The Pages icocn looks the same for both apps.

  • The nature of "ORA-01555: snapshot too old..." error

    Hi all,
Please help me to understand the nature of this error:
ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number 23 with name "_SYSSMU23_755263746$" too small
One of reports returns this error. Yes, I googled it, but honestly I can't understand deeply what causes it. Usually I resolve it by performing sql request on yesterday's copy of production database. Is it correct to say that this error happens when I try to perform request on tables that are changed in the same moment? What is correct solution to resolve it other than using yesterday's copy of production database?

    marco wrote:
    Antonio,
The problem is generally small segments of undo, you need to add more space or put guaranty the tablespaces.
How do I describe it for our DBA (how much extra space do I need and what is the name of tablespace)?
Before you go to your DBA, you should figure out how much space your largest query/update uses. That is, your biggest transaction, how much space does it need? 10M? 100M? 1G? From there, your DBA can then size your UNDO properly (or at least "more better" ).   Yes he "name of the tablespace" is just called "UNDO").
As mentioned before, the solution might not even be to increase your UNDO size, but rather to identify the "problem job", and fix it. That's not easy, however, talk to your DBA, he may be able to help with that as well.
    Things to look for:
    1) a job that issues a lot of commits. (suspicious - try to reduce # of commits).
    2) a job that runs for a long time and updates along the way (suspicious - try to reduce run time).
    3) a job that runs for a long time and has no updates (try to reduce run time - in this case, if this job starts running, and then takes a long time, a lot of other jobs may be reasonably doing updates, and this long run query needs to reference a row that was updated - it might lose it in the UNDO, though).
    4) long running queries running at same time as updates on same table. (not always possible, but think about it: a "long running query" is often a "report" of some sort (not always, but often). Try to schedule the reports when less update activity is expected. Or, if the updates are part of the same batch, try to schedule them after each other so they don't overlap. (if the updates are online users, there isn't much you can do except try to decrease runtime of the long running query).
You DBA can help find candidates for those cases.

  • Snapshot too old error during drop tablespace

    Hi Experts
When we are doing BW reorg and steps followed are
    1. created a newtablespace with source tablespace TABART class reference.
    2. Export the source tablespace to the filesystem level.
    3. DROP the source tablespace now.
    4. Rename the new tablespace to source tablespace name.
    5. Import
Here in the third step i have received snapshot too old error.
BR0301E SQL error -604 at location BrSqlExecute-1, SQL statement:
'/* BRSPACE */ drop tablespace PSAPADSOLD including contents and datafiles cascade constraints'
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number 0 with name "SYSTEM" too small
BR1017E Execution of SQL statement 'drop tablespace PSAPADSOLD including contents and datafiles cascade constraints' failed
so i tried to rename the tablespace and set to offline and tried to import only 240 tables were imported compared to 24057 tables.Still the PSAPADS - Source tablespace shows 65000 elements.
    my queries:
    1. After Export of the tablespace how come the Source tablespace retain the tables.
    2. why i could not able to drop the tablespace
I had increased the UNDO_RETENTION to 86400 my oracle version is 10.2.04.
Source table space PSAPADS is 80 GB and has only 30 GB data and the remaining are free.
    PSAPUNDO was 17GB in size.
    Kinldy suggest

    Hi Stefa
    Thanks for your reply.
how to find the System undo is still active. How to track which Undo which is active and their steps.
As per the metalink note our PSAPUNDO is Locally Managed Tablepsace hence the second workaround is applicable..
How to validate this will not give a problem again while i am doing reorganization.
When i checked a sap note 1039060 this note is applicable to windows i dont how it can be impleneted.
Whether any merge fix will help on this

  • "Snapshot too old" for a report program

We get "ORA-1555 error:  snapshot too old" for a report job, NOT an update job.
We can add rollback segments to the DB.
Why we cannot increase the commit frequency to fix this issue?
    Thanks!

    > 1. create a big rollback segment. search the web for keyword PSAPROLLBIG.
    > 2. convert to PSAPUNDO, as started by others, check SAP note 600141.
    > 3. analyze the program and if it is a Z program, ask your program to add more commits in his program.
    HI all,
of course Stefan and Eric have already given the right hints here.
But the main point here is not the configuration of the UNDO management.
I know that this kind of problems bears a big mental hurdle in it, which is also difficult to jump over for many supporters.
The notion of Undo/Rollback data beeing used mainly for ROLLBACK actions is unfortunately totally wrong.
The primary and main usage of this data is to deliver the consistent view (as already explained in this thread).
So the single big question here is: why does a single statement of your report needs to visit so many pages from a certain point in time?
In the wast majority of cases this is because the statement is badly tuned.
Maybe there is no appropriate index available.
Or it's just written badly, so that unnecessary data must be read by Oracle.
Maybe the CBO does something wrong which must be checked.
Maybe the data is scattered over too many blocks and clustering them together somehow could help
The core point here is: figure out what causes the statement to touch so many pages and fix that.
Then you are most likely to come over this problem.
All other recommendations, especially the move to automatic undo management: full ack.
But the solution to your problem is to fix your statement.
    regards,
    Lars

  • E Mac too old to watch Video streaming from web?

Hi good folks of Apple world. I am having an 'issue' with my eMac 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 with 1 GB DDR SRAM. Mac OS X Version 10.4.11.
Apart from a problem with the logic board (fixed under extended warranty) this has been an amazingly reliable machine. My problem now is video related, I cannot watch video streaming on the web, The feed is jerky and broken. In the UK my family watch the BBC i Player a lot. Something happened a few months ago after a security update, because before that I could watch the i Player, now we cannot. The same thing happens when trying to watch music video etc. I use Safari and Firefox, for a while we could almost watch video using Firefox, but now it's as bad as Safari.
Is it just that my Mac is too old? I heard that the BBC were not 'supporting' Apple product?
When watching video feed from the web at work, on a PC everything works fine?
Love to hear any informed comment?
    Regards, Alister

There's a variety of reasons for this problem...
Flash - Flash is bad. One possible solution is to downgrade to v9 of Flash, as it seems to run better on these machines.
Speed - yeah, the CPU isn't real current, so it's probably a bit of a factor - but in reality - I can watch any AVI/MOV etc, without a problem. Its only when I try to watch HD content that my eMac struggles. So, I really don't think the CPU/computer as such is to blame.
Websites - YouTube for example, is rotten for making their site full of crap that your eMac is having to deal with as well as play the video you are trying to watch. Stuff like telling you how to buy the song that's playing in the video... or other advertising crap etc. That all doesn't help.
BBC - I'm not familiar with the BBC's iView software/website, but for one thing, I'd be writing back and formally lodging a complaint that they don't support Apple Mac. That's poor.
One option, painful though, is to use Safari to load the video page, then look in the Activity Log to find the video file, double click it, and download it direct to your computer. Then watch it that way using something like "VLC".

  • Version too old to administrate site

We have four administrators for our site, due to its large
size. One of the administrators downloaded the trial version of CS3
to test it out. Now, since she used the administration features
with that version, none of the rest of us can use the admin
features with our version (3.1). It says "Your version of
Contribute is too old to administer this website. Please use a
newer version of Contribute, or contact another administrator."
Any way to fix this, other than upgrading?

If you kept a backup of the "_mm" folder on your site you
might could overwrite the newer copy of the folder.
Short of this I don't think you have any other options other
than upgrading. When upgrading the Administrative functions
Contribute CS3 makes changes to the formatting of the XML files
where the site infromation is stored.

  • Delivery expired (message too old)

    Hello,
I am getting a few errors each day related to the following type of message.  I have done some web searches, and a few pointed to Windows 2008 DNS as a possible problem.  However, our Ironports point to our external DNS which is BIND.   Here is the relevant data from message tracking.

Anyone else see this?  Any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks ahead of time!
    Elias

    Greetings Elias,
With the data you provided its a bit difficult to say if this is related to a DNS issue or not. A couple of things you may want to do here to further diagnose this.
If delivery attempts fail, this means the destination's mail server  did not accept a given message after 72 hours or 100 iterations of  consecutive tries (example).   This issue can be seen either incoming  (delivery to your internal groupware server) or outgoing (towards  another domain via the Internet).   While this does not necessarily  signal a problem with your local IronPort ESA, you can work around this  by extending the retransmission period or number of attempts, and  therefore increasing the chances for successful delivery.   These values  are controlled by the IronPort's Bounce Profiles.
Note: If you  wish to make the retransmission timeout more lax, increasing the value  may increase your chance for successful delivery.   The overall duration  (i.e., "maximum number of seconds") defines times in terms of seconds.  The default value is 259,200 seconds, or three days. We'd recommend  increasing this threshold to 345,600 seconds (four days) or 432,000  (five days) if necessary.
To edit the "Default" bounce profile via the GUI:
    1) Go to Network > Bounce Profiles > select your Profile Name
    2) set "Maximum Number of Retries" to change the number of times we attempt delivery
    3) set "Maximum Time in Queue" to specify the total length of time to store the message for retransmission
    4) set "Maximum Time to Wait per Message" to give the maximum interval between retries
Alternatively, we can use the CLI 'bounceconfig' command to set the same values.
You may also want to enable the domain debug logs to this host. This way you can see the full smtp conversation between your appliance and the remote host. This may provide some more detail on the previous failures before it gets to this state.
Additionally you may want to also consult the mail logs for the previous failures.
Below is some more information on setting up the domain debug logs.
The domain debug log is a system log  designed to record all SMTP traffic between a specific domain and an   Email Security Appliance (ESA)  for a finite number of sessions. This  log type can assist in troubleshooting issues that relate to a specific  recipient domain or host. Each session is recorded until the number of  session defined has been reached, at which time the log will stop  collecting data. You can stop domain debug before all sessions have been  recorded by deleting or editing the log subscription.
    Configuration
Logs can be configured and created through the IronPort CLI   using the logconfig command or via the GUI.
To configure logs via the GUI, see the Advanced User Guide: Log Subscriptions .
Below is an example of creating a Domain Debug Log subscription using the CLI:.
