Too slow down/uploading speed FTP + airport extreme b.s.

Hi guys,
I've just switched form WIN to MAC...I've bought the Apple Powerbook 17" and Airport Extreme Base Station...I didn't have any problems with setting up airport extreme for connection to the Internet + I've connected PC and MAC wirelessly to the Internet.
Here's my problem...I've found out that the download speed from FTP server is to low (under 1 MB/s when using airport extreme).....while when I connect my PC to the Internet using LAN cable, the speed is about 6MB/s ....
where's the problem?
Is there any possibility of raising the speed when using airpport extreme?
Any ideas?
Thank you

Geoffrey,
I haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet - I am going to reset the base station and revert the firmware back to the second-to-latest version. I've heard there can be issues with the latest version.
I notice you're connecting wirelessly - that probably always will be slower but you can tweak your settings a bit - if you have 'enable interference robustness' on, you could try turning it off, there's also a speed setting there too.
My problem happens with it in wireless, yes, but weirder, working wired too - my adsl modem runs into the airport, then out to a router. Speed on a PC connected to that router seems ok, but all my macs are slow as anything, If I connect them directly to the ADSL modem, the speed improves - it seems to be an issue between the Extreme, and the macs - and, weirder still, some are on OSX.3.9 and some are on OS9.2.2

  • Extremely slow upload speed on Airport Extreme

I've had a perfectly working Airport Extreme for about 3 years now and suddenly the other night it decided it would slow it's upload speed to a crawl. Speedtest.net gives me an upload speed of 15-20 Mbps download speed but a tiny .07 Mbps upload speed.  I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.  I've tried prior software versions (was running 7.6.1), restarting, and reverting to the factory settings and setting up a new network all to no avail.   Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.
Unless your modem supports Gigabit Ethernet connections then setting the WAN port on the Extreme to 1000 will not work. Have you tried both of the 100 Mbps settings ... i.e., both Full and Half-Duplex?
The key here is what may have changed between the AirPort and the modem that could have caused your upload speed to drop. Depending on the generation of your AirPort, it can support LAN-to-WAN speeds up to 400 Mbps.
If changing the WAN setting doesn't help, I would suggest two things: 1) Reset the WAN setting to Automatic, and 2) Perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment, as follows:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • Slowing down or speeding up music?

Iv tried numerous times to to slow down or speed up music, I assumed it was changing the tempo but that didnt work and now im at a loss of what to do, can someone help???

I do not understand how you are not getting results after adjusting the tempo in Master track. I do it all the time to listen to note lineup and such. Go to Master Track, look for tempo and either adjust the slider or highlight the actual numerical tempo and type a new tempo setting. This will speed up or slow down the recorded material.

  • Airport Time Capsule slows down internet speed while uploading app

    Hi All,
Internet speed is going down drastically when I am submitting any iOS app to iTunes Connect.
Previously it was not like this.
I have updated my Macbook Pro to Mavericks and using Airport Time Capsule for wi-fi connection.
Is anyone facing this problem? Any help on this will be very much helpful.

I have almost the exact setup as you, and airtunes never slows down my internet connection.
Has it just happened recently? Have you done a reset on the TC? Make sure you are using the g network, and not in the b only mode.
You can also make sure everything on the network are getting good signal. You can check the signal strength from Airport Utility (in the logs and Stats pane).

  • Does new Airport Extreme slow down when used with Airport Express?

    Maybe this is self-evident.
If get the new Airport extreme and use an old airport express to extend it, will signal slow down to the old speed?
Does the AE have a greater range? Perhaps I don't need the Express to extend.
I live in NYC and there are so many signals in the air. It seems like having the additional airport helps keep me connected.
    Thanks.

The airport express is g technology not n technology, so it will be at least as slow as your old network. Also, I'm not sure but I think the the range will be a bit longer than with the old g system, but does not have the full potential of an n system.
I've set up my new system but none of my machines are n capable. I extended the system using my old expresses. The speed of the system is no greater than what it was before the n.
I bought the system to upgrade my technology because everytime my Applecare runs out, I get a new computer which isn't too far down the road. I've purchased an Apple TV which will also work better with the n technology when I upgrade. It's either buy it now or buy it later. I'm also hoping that some third party like Belkin will develop a PCIX card to provide n technology to those of my computers that aren't currently n capable. I'm sure there is many like me out there.

  • Very slow transfer speeds with Airport Extreme and MacBook

I have been using a new Airport Extreme without problem at my home for the past six weeks. The speed and range was excellent with both my MacBook Pro and the MacBook which I purchased a few weeks ago. I came out to Greece with both laptops and a new AP Extreme box for my home network here. After set up I noticed that internet access was lethargic on the MacBook and file transfer between the two computers was extremely slow. The problem seems to be with the new MacBook (although it was working well in London). I've done some speed tests and the internet download speed is only 48 kpbs! I also notice that the range is very poor--in the room next to the router I am down to five bars. If I connect to the AP Extreme with cable I get the full 1Mbps I would normally expect here in Athens (ADSL nominal 2Mbps). The MacBook Pro has no problems with wireless access speeds or range, so I am assuming this has to be a problem with the AP extreme card in the MacBook. Is there anything I have overlooked? Perhaps something to do with setting up the new AP Extreme here in Athens?

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.

  • Slow Internet Speeds with Airport Extreme

I am noticing a dramatic slow down with my Airport Extreme. However, I have noticed this is an intermittent issue. Here are the specs of what I am running:
    • Airport Extreme Base station that is plugged into a cable modem. The AEBS is routing the IP addresses.
    • Plugged into the AEBS is an 800mhz iMac that is hardwired in. No slow down is noted on this computer.
    • MacBook (Less than 2 months old) is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
    • iPhone is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
Where I am having the problems is with the MacBook. I will have full signal strength and yet it takes for ever to load a page. Plus sometimes the connection will time out. As stated above this is an intermittent issue. Sometimes everything works fine, other times the connection has issues. All pieces of equipment are running the latest firmware. Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this issue?

I would recommend changing the wireless channel of the Extreme.
Open Airport Utility, and select Manual Setup. Note on the summary page what the channel is set to, most often it will be set to channel 6 (Automatic), but it could be anything between 1-11.
Goto the Wireless tab and adjust the channel so it several channels apart from the current one. If it is on channel 6, I recommend channel 1 or 11.

  • Slow wifi speeds with airport extreme and win 7

i have an airport extreme router that i love. i recently noticed that my wifi was running slow. after performing a speed check i confirmed that my speeds were about 3-6mb/sec. this was done on my win 7 pro machine. while seated in front of my pc, i ran the same check using my iphone and i get 50mb/sec. this continues to be the case now for like a week. does anyone know if a recent windows update has done something. router has been restored to factory settings to no avail. when i first set up the router a few months ago, both machines were getting 50mb/sec downloads. not sure what has happened. any help would be appreciated.thanks

  • Slow fios upload speeds in northern NJ

I have 50/50 internet but the upload speed is extremely slow.  Download speeds are usually somewhere between 50-60 mbps any time during the day.  Upload speeds are around 30 mbps during the mornings and in the evenings it gets as low as 5 mbps.
They replaced the box outside, inside, and also the modem...Still the same thing. The upload speed seems very consistent everyday being faster in the morning and slowing down in the evenings.
Is the service in my area oversold?  The only time I got 50 mbps upload speeds was on new years day(morning).
Verizon shouldn't advertise that upload speeds is the same as download.

Well, then I'm not sure what you expect to get from posting here.  In case you didn't notice, you're talking to peers here.  There are a bunch of network savvy folks here, but we can't help you if you don't give us details.  We only know what you tell us, nothing more.  if you're convinced the problem is in Verizon's network, then there is nothing we other users can do for you.
I suggest you try some large file transfers as well.  Speedtest sites are very useful tools, but sometimes real world testing is important too.  Some quick tests could be uploading movies to FaceBook or YouTube.  If you have other well connected servers you can use, try them too.
Remember that the Internet is ultimately a shared medium, regardless of what Verizon's marketing department says.  If you're testing through links that are loaded, then speed will drop.  Using other servers and test sites will help determine if some links are busier than others.
    Enjoy.

  • Internet very slow after changing my previous airport extreme to my new 2T TC

    Hi,
I just got a new 2T time capsule to replace my Airpot Extreme that worked fine. After installing it I chose to import a previous wifi network to the new TC and my internet became very slow. I read a few online documents sugesting that the internet slows down when backing up large data, but I dont think it is backing up (I did a force quit on systems preferences that "froze" with the cursor becoming a spinning ball) and after that tryed to restart my mac pro, but it has been recovering space from file vault for 2 hours. I am trying to access the internet from my mac air, but the speed is 10% of what I usually get.
Any suggestions? Starting to regret getting the TC, I had high expectations about it.
    Thanks
    Rubens

    Thanks William.
I got help from Apple by phone and aparrently after importing the old airport extreme configurations, my time capsule ended with wrong "Radio channel selection" and after changing the 2.4Ghz to 9 and the 5Hhz to 157 the internet connection is back to normal. thanks

  • Max speed for Airport Extreme??

I just connected with Verizon Fios (fiber) and have 15mb down and 2 mb up speeds. I have verified the speed with an XServe directly attached to the router.
The airport extreme serve the rest of the house. I have yet to see speeds exceeding 3.5 mb once it goes thru the airport.
Am I missing something in a setup??
Or is there a limit to speeds??

OK. So is there a setting I can use to beef up the
speed? I'm about 75' away from the base but also
using 2 Express Stations as extenders.
I actually connect to one of the Express Stations as
    I get a full signal.
With this kind of configuration you can get a maximum
    throughput of:
    - with only 802.11g (Extreme): 22 Mbit/s / 4 = 5.5 Mbit/s
    - with 802.11b: 5.5 Mbit/s / 4 = 1.5 Mbit/s
(Here I'm speaking of throughput at a user level, for
exemple with an FTP directly wrom one of your computers
    to the next).
You may improve this by suppressing the 2 network
extenders (they eat their share of the bandwidth).
    Then by using only 802.11g.
Don't forget to check out that you don't have any
neighbour's interfering network. They may interfere with
your own network without completly droping it.

  • Ftp too slow: pharlap and linux ftp problem

    Hi all,
    my problem seems very strange.
I work with a rt system (PXI 8187 with pharlap os). I have to retrieve several log files that can be very heavy (100 MB or more).
When I retrieve these files using Internet Explorer the ftp has a transfer rate of 500 KB/s ca. If I use SUSE Linux the transfer rate is 10 KB/s, that is not acceptable.
Moreover if I use a windows client onto SUSE Linux (using VMWare) the client present a transfer rate of 500 KB/s.
Finally the SUSE ftp client can retrieve from other FTP server (Linux) with a good transfer rate (1 MB/s).
So I can't understang where is the problem: windows can retrieve from pharlap, linux can retrieve from linux, windows onto linux can retrieve from pharlap, linux CAN'T (because too slow) retrieve from pharlap.
    can someone help us?
    thanks all.

    Hi Anmol,
That's an interesting issue, I currently have some cRIO's sitting on my desk and would love to help you get to the bottom of this issue, could you let me know a few things:
    1. Operating systems the same?
    2. cRIO controller model & revision (revision is the first letter in the part number i.e. 111111C-00L would be rev C)
    3. Network speeds of both laptop ethernet ports & the chipsets for these (via device manager)
    4. Do you have another PC you could check this on to narrow it down to the laptop
    5. Have you always had this issue?
    Thanks,

  • Slow wireless internet connection using airport extreme

My wireless internet connection works but is very slow (<80kbs). The problem seems to be with the airport extreme (brand new, purchased in May 07) because my connection is very fast (>6mbs) when i connect by wire to the airport extreme base station. Signal strength is strong, so i can't figure out the problem. Any ideas?
    imac Mac OS X (10.4)

BK37, I hope you've solved your problem by now. But if not, and for the benefit of others reading this post, let me share what I (finally) discovered when I had virtually the same problem, i.e. 8mbps wired speed, <50kbps wireless speed.
I tried literally <span style="font-style:italic;">every suggestion I could find in the Airport discussions. First, I can assure you that changing the channel can give you incremental speed improvements in some instances, but for radical drops like yours, it's not the answer. Nor is turning off ipv6, or changing to WEP, or turning off Remote Access, or moving the AEBS, or or or or or....
With such a radical drop in speed, it's most likely you have a hardware-related blockage somewhere. In my case it was my wiring configuration. My setup was France Telecom Livebox (ADSL modem / ethernet & 802.11g router) --> Ethernet cable --> Linksys RTP 3100 IP phone adapter / router --> Ethernet cable --> AEBS --> 3 Airport Express set up to extend network and run AirTunes. After eliminating every other possible problem, I narrowed it down to the Linksys router, which for reasons I have yet to figure out was trapping the speed to the AEBS. I ethernet cabled both the Linksys router and the AEBS directly to the Livebox and presto! Back to blazing speed.
Hopefully this info will be helpful to you or some poor soul in the same situation, as I would have loved to have had it myself before I pulled every hair out of my head!
