Took the plunge today!!!

After much consideration, I finally took the plunge and got an iPhone today, and now I'm wondering what took me so long! I was on a S**t family plan and painlessly transferred to an AT&T plan. Porting my number over was SURPRISINGLY and blazingly fast, taking less than an hour! It's always taken much longer in the past whenever I switched providers. I'm simply amazed. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I wish the Apple BT headset came with instructions though. It took me a while to figure out how to power it on and pair it, but I got it. Bye bye S**t, hellooooooooooooooooo iPhone!

I don't know what to make of the headset just yet. I had one for the old phone, but didn't use it often because it tended to literally hand on my ear and look more like a digital tumor than something useful. The Apple headset has no moving parts other than the switch, and it's just one earpiece rather than a pair. It doesn't fit my ear very well, but I think a sponge cover over the earphone will fix that. I will play with it over the next few days.

  • Took The Plunge!! Was NX6600GT VTD128SP HDTV output Performance

    NX6600GT VTD128SP HDTV output Performance
Well took the plunge and purchased the NX6600GT VTD128SP HDTV from Newegg of course.  Before I go any further, just like to say thier prices and CUSTOMER Support are GREEEEAAAAAT!!
I have purchased from them before and have always been a Happy Camper.     UPS delivery sucks though     Took 7 days on a 3 day shipping ticket.
Now on to what I am experiencing.  Removed all Drivers and leftovers using the Add/Remove, then ran Driver Cleaner no problems there.  Rebooted machine card was picked up right away.
Installed the Nvidia driver set 77.77_winxp2k.  Rebooted and then installed the Nvidia 4.13_forceware_wdm for capturing.  Rebooted and all is well.  This video card is GREAT so far for the desktop and applications for my HTPC.
The problem I am having is Capturing, the display is GREAT with VIVID color and DETAIL no fuzziness.  But during a capture from live TV, it will stop for maybe 1/2 second play for 5 mins then stop again, then play for 2 mins and stop again.
The stopping is very erratic and no set time frame for prediction.  The second problem I am having is during capture of medium to fast moving scenes.  There are trailing lines from the object that is moving fast, that are not as bad as I have seen on other cards but still noticible.
And before anyone asks wheather I installed the driver set from MSI, yes I did and they are junk to put it nicely.  My capture drive I know is fast enough and formatted to the 64K cluster allocation, which I believe is the recommend cluster size.
I know that my system can handle this as prior to the NX6600GT VTD128SP HDTV, I had the MSI Ti4800SE with VIVO had a few problems similar to this that I am having now.  The tricks I did to that card to get it to capture smoothly I tried on the new card with no success.  Video Overlay, Overclock, etc, etc.  I have not tried overclocking on this card yet as I feel it should be fast enough already as stock.
Any suggestions out there       This is TRUELY a great card for the HTPC community.  Again I was REALLY impressed with the Sharpness, Color, Vibrant display gives on my 55" Mitsubishi.  It really is  a GREAT picture.  Just got to get the two bugs worked out.
    Thanks
    John

You probably should consider more RAM. Since you're system may be contributing to a bottleneck scenario now with the more powerful card :shrugs: You could play with the swapfile settings, and If you had another drive entirely, you could put the swapfile on that instead of on the same drive as the OS.
    Just something to consider.
    Yeah, I love Newegg

  • Have took the plunge

    Hi,
Ordered Bt vision and infinity BB yesterday, (already BT cust for phone) great price on a 2 year contract, the sales person was really helpful and didn't rush and very patient as I was asking loads of questions, been with my current suppliers for years so bit nervous about moving - you hear so many horror stories but have taken the plunge feeling positive about the whole thing.
Given notice to sky and talk talk (I am an old Tiscali customer). Sky were very persistent but after about 10 mins actually let me cancel (had to be very firm as they were ready to offer me the earth) been with them on a basic package for about 8 years. Got the feeling the guy I was talking to was on a bonus to keep customers from cancelling.
Talk talk - asked why was I was moving and when I said getting infinity BB installed they guy said he couldn't argue with that! With all you hear about talk talk it was straight forward to get my mac code and was sent my code within an hour of requesting it, shame that they didn't deal with other issues I had them so promptly.
Got my order reference number and appt. for the engineer next week, equipment should be with me by mid week.
So will keep you posted on how it all goes - fingers crossed!
    Cheers Andy

    Well Folks,
After a few nervous hours waiting for the engineer I have finally got Infinity and BT Vision......Horraahh!!!
The openreach engineers (I say plural because 2 of them arrived) and within 10 minutes of my previous internet going down was online again, all the gadgets have been configured and connected (xbox, iphones, blu ray player, blackberry, laptops).
BT Vision took a couple of hours to connect, first off got C03 error so went shopping and when we got back and a couple of restarts it was up and running. Took a couple of channel scans to get all the channels stored, so far so good. Watched a few music videos already, just getting used to the interface.
Only slight downer of the day was my appt time came and went so spent an hour on hold waiting to speak to someone but when finally got through was very helpful and they contacted openreach and within 5 mins of putting phone down the engineer rang to say he was at the exchange and would be with me shortly.
So far very pleased overall but will keep you posted on how things go .............
    Cheers
    Andy

  • I took the plunge to upgrade!

After all the info seeing about Mt. Lion & Logic Pro X, I waited on upgrading. Finally I took the steps. Went to Mt. Lion first..... no problems... seems to work very well on my Mac Pro 2 x 2.26 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB ram. Then I loaded in Logic Pro X.  After the last few days of testing and using the programs, I am very satisfied with the new upgrades. No crashes or anything bad, so far. All in all, a very good experience changing over. In my case, I have had no problems in the past with upgrading. I have been a Logic user since 2.6 version. I have been lucky and not had problems like other users have had on this forum. But, with that said, I DO NOT put alot of programs on my computer. It is almost 100% music programs, no junk apps, games and etc. I would recommend staying away with putting everything in the sun on your computer. It only causes heartaches in my humble opinion. Just thought I would pass along the info for the people who are thinking of upgrading.  Life is good............... :-)

  • Took the plunge

Just ordered 2.93X2, 8X2Gb, two optical, 4700. I'm going to run a 30" using DVI and a 23" using the DVI adapter.
As an aside, I ordered a Seagate 7200.12 1Tb for my boot drive - have no idea what Apple might ship with, and I've heard very good thing about this Gen12 drive.
If the memory speed gets nailed by the extra two sticks, I suppose I could drop down to 12Gb and put them on the market, but I could use the 16Gb overhead (what I'm used to now).

Apple currently seems to be shipping the 1TB WD Caviar Black drives with the Mac Pro, but that could (and will) change as they are often switching suppliers. The .12 seems like a 'fine' model - though nothing to write home about versus the .11 - and that one was a nightmare with all it's firmware issues all the way to the latest (1.5 TB) model.
I do hope Seagate has gotten their act together though and the .12 runs flawlessly.
Not to take away from your purchase - if the firmware has no issues, it's a nice drive for sure!

  • I took the plunge...

I ordered a 15" 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro tonight. I ordered it with the 160 gig hard-drive that spins at 7200 rpm and with the glossy screen. I got $200 off since I am a student.
I'm a little bit nervous, anxious, and very excited as this is my first Mac. I have no idea what to expect, nor any idea how to use the OSX platform.
I just hope I made the right choice. Has anyone ever been in the same situation as me? How did it turn out?

It turned out that it was just another computer, albeit one with very well thought out features and a very sensible OS.
I still marvel at how usable the iSight camera and microphone are - the microphone doesn't seem to pick up any background noise even with the fans whirring away. The trackpad is immensely functional with its two-finger tapping and scrolling (despite not having two buttons or a slidey scroll thing on the side). The ambient light sensor does its thing at precisely the same moments I would ordinarily adjust the display brightness myself. The list goes on. A lot of thought went into this notebook.
Edit: Forgot to mention, it takes a photo of you to use as your user picture when you start it up for the first time, so dress nicely and say CHEEEZ.

  • Just Took The Plunge

Well i did it after years of being a pc person i made the switch. opened the box pluged it in 5 minutes up and running on the net im thinking this is way to easy. now to the problem after installing the updates lets put in the 4g of ram i bought from future shop comstar packaged buffalo ram 2x2g pc2 5300 667mhz part# d2n667c-2gmej non ecc and non buffered. turn the imac back on 3 beeps is this ram not combatible anyone tried this ram or is one of my dim slots defective any thoughts.

You have a known good module that you removed in order to install the 2GB ones.
Remove both 2GB modules, insert the original one in one of the slots and start up the iMac. Is all okay? That memory slot is fine then.
Shut down, remove the original module, insert it in the other slot and start up again. Is all still okay? If yes, then both your memory slots are fine and the problem lies with one (or both) of your 2GB modules.
Leave the original one in, insert one of the 2GB modules in the other slot and start up. Is it starting up okay? If yes, then the problem module is the one that's not inserted. If no, repeat the steps with the other 2GB module. If it still doesn't start up, return both modules and get replacements.

  • Finally took the iTunes 11 plunge - some observations, and a question.

So I finally took the plunge, and committed to using iTunes 11 as my main player.
I was using iTunes 10 as my main player, then rebooted to a spare disk with iTunes 11 when I needed to update my iDevices.
I briefly tried iTunes 11 when it first came out, but didn't really like it, so went back to iTunes 10. I finally got tired of having to reboot to sync and update my phone. So I took the plunge. For better or worse. Like a marriage?
Using various guides on the web I have itunes 11 functioning reasonably well.
I still don't like "up next" as much as "DJ" but think I will learn to adapt. Maybe.
The mini player is much better, I didn't use it much before, but do now just so I can show artwork for currently playing song. I guess I used to use multiple iTunes windows instead - but that is gone.
I used to use iTunes 10 mostly in "song" mode, with the browser and sidebar showing.
I discovered an interesting thing. As you probably know iTunes search speed is not what it should be. I accidentally found this might be due to having the "browser" window open. Close that browser (that shows genre, artist, album) and search gets much faster. In itunes 11 this is only relevant when in "songs" view. Search in other modes seems reasonably quick (for me if I get a search result in second, that is reasonable).
One thing I have not been able to replicate, and really miss, is to be able to click on the arrow next to an artist, or album, (in song view) and have just that artist/album show up in the "browser" window and song list. Does anybody know how to do this?
some background: 2010 Macpro 12GB RAM. OS 10.9.4, and Users files, and hence iTunes library, on SSD. Music media on external esata box. I have been collecting music for a long time, most of my music is from CD or digitized LP. I do have one iTunes store song. A lot of "bootleg" live recordings. I also act as the family music repository, brothers, sisters, kids, parents - and we all love music music, so, the library is quite large. I've weeded out all the outright duplicates, but still do have several copies of some albums (LP, original CD, remastered CD, you get the idea). Lets just say, I can't use iCloud syncing. iTunes was probably never designed for the way I use it. . . I've considered other players, but, can't find one that will import everything I've done, and work with iDevices. I am open to suggestions
Let me add - I used to visit the apple forums often, but the interface has changed so much it is almost difficult for an old timer to keep up.

One thing I have not been able to replicate, and really miss, is to be able to click on the arrow next to an artist, or album, (in song view) and have just that artist/album show up in the "browser" window and song list. Does anybody know how to do this?
    D Knight D,
It is still doable!  In Songs view, hover over the Song name.  This brings up a little arrow in a circle.  Click the little arrow, and you will get a small contextual menu that includes "Go to Artist," "Go to Album," etc.  See screenshot below.

  • Ready to take the plunge, but dont want to face plant

The update was made available at around 11 a.m today Wednesday September 18th I am on a wifi network and i took the time (about 20 or so minutes) to install, it seemed like everything was installing but after the long installation wait it wouldn't allow me to download it

I had better success doing this:
Download iTunes 11.1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. Select your device under the Devices heading in the iTunes' sidebar. Click on the Summary tab in iTunes' main window. Click on the Update button.

  • 7 Hours on the phone today with Comcast trying to activate my cablecard!!

After 7+ hours on the phone with Comcast my cable card is still not working.  I spent the entire day trying to get this resolved and now a tech is coming out on Thursday, a 3 day wait.  I've been told all kinds of things from "What's a Cablecard?" to "Comcast doesn't work with the Ceton InfiniTV".  Any chance of getting help here?  I will post a copy of my cellphone bill with my calls today and the time spent on the phone today.

    TomWilder wrote:
The tech came yesterday along with a supervisor, two guys. They stayed here six hours, from 2-8pm. They took my cable card that still wasn't working. They tested 4 or 5 cards.
The best part is, they had the exact same experience I had. Talk to someone for 45 minutes and they got hung up on, call back, talk to someone else for 30 minutes and blindly get transferred to someone new and explain everything from the beginning. It seemed like the same cycle over and over. The only difference, my 7 hours on the phone ended with them telling me they needed to send someone out. Thiers ended with telling them they needed to bring my card in and come back today.  They said they would be back between 12:30 and 2:30. Guess what, they didn't show up. I called Comcast, talked for 30 minutes with someone trying to talk me into using a cable box before she would find out why the tech didn't show, waited on hold for 15 minutes and then got disconnected. This is such a bad joke, I understand that Comcast has the second to worst customer service of any company, just ahead of Time Warner, but this is ridiculous.
Apologies for the issue that you described above. I have escalated your issue to the right teams so that we can get the cable card activated and make this right.
That team will review your account and contact you directly. Thanks again for your patience.

  • Time To Take The Plunge

Well, thanks to what seems like a nice opportunity, I am about to take the plunge later today and get a Rev B ( 20", 2.0ghz, 250GB) iMac. The opportunity? A large, reliable retailer is relocating one of their branches and discarding some of their display stock.
I've been offered $250 CAD off the retail price (which, after taxes, comes to about $283 CAD). That to me seems like a bargain considering I'll be getting full warranty and can buy applecare later. I have, of course, confirmed the specs from the box and will be double-checking that the unit inside the box is the same as that described. I will also be trying to see the unit to make sure it's not badly scratched.
So - in the next couple of hours, I would like the opinions of others. Should there be anything particular I should be asking/looking for prior to handing over my money?
    Thanks in advance.

Well, in the end I got a total of $300CAD off ($342 after taxes). I'm quite pleased, and setting up the unit at work - I picked it up on my way - it looks perfect. Of course, I'll find out when I turn the thing on at home, but I had to have my co-workers drooling, so I had it set up next to my desk.
I'll probably copy everything across and buy a wireless router this weekend to take it for a real test run. All I need to do now is find a good source of RAM and then decide between an extra 512 or 1GB chip.
Oh, Wayne: I got it from London Drugs new store in New Westminster. I had heard from a friend on Monday night that their old New West store was clearing them out, and when I asked on Tuesday, I found out they only had one left. Sweet...
