• Canvas Color

I just started using Illustrator CS4 and I'm finding the canvas color (not the artboard color) a little bright for my eyes' comfort.
I'm aware of the ability to change the brightness of the interface, but this does not affect the canvas color. Is there a way to change this?
Thanks!

> Any way to do so without creating a colored box?
Turn on the Transparency Grid in the View menu. Change the grid colour in Document Setup. No need to draw anything.

• Canvas color won't change, only remains white.

I opened Illustrator and my canvas color is white. I tried changing it in the user interface but it just remains white. I checked and unchecked Overprint preview and nothing. I think maybe I hit a key or somehting but does anyopne know how I can change the canvas color back to a dark gray?

File >> Document Setup
Turn on simulate colored paper
Set top swatch to color to a dark grey
Click ok
The only really use for this is if you have colored paper/canvas, is this what you want. If not just dray a dark grey rectangle adn send to back.

I guess that you should have first done this and can even do it even now:
Have the entire project selected first; then open your preferences and choose your white background. This should allow your entire work to have a white background.
That is NOT the way it is supposed to work. The background color preference is global to the application, it does not work on a project by project basis. This preference setting determines what FCP X displays in the Viewer in areas where you have no content (or where the content is transparent) - as in the present case, where the photos do not cover the whole viewer area.
You can easily confirm this. Open some project with a transparent area, and set the background to say, white.
You should see white showing through any transparent area (that's what the OP was expecting, and it should happen!).
Now close this project, open something else. Switch to, say, checkerboard background.
Open the previous project and see the checkerboard (not white!) background.
One workaround for the present problem is to place a custom generator behind the content, and set its color to white. But of course this should not have been necessary.

• Adjusting PDF properties changes canvas color?

When I adjust properties on a PDF the canvas color changes from nearly black to bluish gray. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or a way to change the color back?
I'm not talking about the background color of the PDF page itself (which can be accessed at Document > Background > Add/Replace). I'm talking about the color that surrounds the page and is the screen background in Full Screen Mode.
I have tried this in both in Acrobat 8.3.1 and Acrobat 11.0.0 for the Mac and the same thing happens.
Thanks!

Thanks! Selecting "Hide window controls" does seem to be the only trigger.
The good thing is that the effect is reversible (deselecting "Hide window controls" returns the background color to what it was before).
Is this a bug? I don't see the point of it as a feature. For that matter, it would be useful to have background choices beyond these two colors.

• One Horizontal Toolbar Canvas and Multiple Windows

I have a form with multiple windows and canvases. All our forms have ONE horizontal toolbar canvas. We like to display this horizontal toolbar canvas on every window. Is there way to do this? We get FRM-30162, when we assign the horizontal toolbar canvas to any window other than the primary window of the horizontal toolbar canvas.
Happy New Year!
Thanks

Hi,
we handled that with the following:
1.- create a DUMMY window with the following properties
title: null
Primary Canvas: null
Horizontal toolbar canvas: null
2.- On the Toolbar canvas properties:
Window : DUMMY
3.- On Form properties:
form Horizontal toolbar canvas : "your toolbar canvas"
This sets the toolbar on top and indepedent of your windows.
Happy new year!!!

• Return Form Canvas color to unspecified

{color:#0000ff}Hi,
I´m using forms builder 10g and I would like to know if there´s a way to return the canvas color to <unspecified>?
thanks.{color}

Hi,
The name of the Colour you want is 'OLAFVeryLight' - note this is case sensitive, this works for the BLAF and the new 11g SWAN themes.
This colour will change depending on which scheme you use, if you use the old darker schemes such as TEAL or BLUE then 'OLAFDark' is the background colour you want.
This is a list of the Oracle Look and Feel (OLAF) colours, note they are all case sensitive:
automatic (this changes depending on the object it is applied to)
OLAFVeryLight
OLAFLight
OLAFDark
OLAFVeryDark
OLAF0
OLAF1
OLAF2
OLAF3
OLAF4
You might want to create a form with items using all these colours and run them using the different schemes to get a feel for how they work.
A word of warning though, these colours are undocumented and may not work in future releases or even patches, but they do work with 10g and 11g at present.

• Change canvas color

Hey im currently trying to make a title with a background other then black, do I have to add in an actual second clip or can I just change the canvas color?

You need to put a color generator underneath the video clips. Changing the color of the canvas is only for display purposes.

• Changing Canvas Color

How do I change the canvas color in Illustrator CS4? I do not want to alter the Artboard color, just the canvas. Does anyone know how?

There is no "canvas" in Illustrator. This is not a raster imaging program.
In Document Setup, Transparency pane, you can use the transparency grid as a fake "background" by setting both parts of the grid to the same color. Effectively, this makes the Illustrator window display as the color instead of white. But this is just an on-screen display, originally intended as a means to view transparency effects. It does not print. It is not the same thing you think of in terms of the "canvas color" in a raster program.
If you want your document to actually have a colored background, draw one. Get the Rectangle Tool and draw a large color-filled rectangle. Sent it to the back and lock it. Or put it on its own Layer and lock the Layer.
In Illustrator, you create and work with objects, not regions of different-colored pixels as in a raster program. If there is no object, there is no color, because there is nothing to which to apply the color.

• Canvas color changing when exported

This is something I've just spotted, and is actually very subtle, but now I've spotted it, is bugging me.
Basically have a site here:
http://www.safariawards.com/
The various headings, eg The Safari Awards 2011 were created in FW, and exported out as JPGs (they might actually be OK as GIFs, but have done JPGs because of the gradient fill of the text, and drop shadow).
Anyway - the canvas color pre export is #39434A. Post export its changing to #39444A.
Is there any reason this should be happening, or any way to prevent it from happening?
Thanks.

Yes, there's a reason it's happening. The JPEG format is a mathematical representation of the data in an image. The compression works by throwing out what are called "higher order terms." The higher the compression, the more detailed information is lost. Color fidelity is one thing you can lose and it's usually more noticable with line art. If you have sharp, high-contrast lines, you'll lose crispness along them, as high contrast is also represented by "higher order terms." (The .jpg format is really designed for photos, JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.)
Things you can try. First, try saving at a higher quality .jpg. Compare that to a .gif. Depending on the art, the colors lost in a .gif may not be as noticable to you as the color shift in the .jpg. Also try a PNG24, as these are full color, but not lossy. Compare file sizes and see which image gives you acceptable quality for the file size.

• Tab canvas color

Hi,
I had a form with content/stacked canvases and I converted all of them to tab so that it would be much easier for the users to view. Everything's working fine but somehow the color of all the canvases has changed to light gray. Earlier my canvases were teal (which is by default in 10g). I want to keep the default color i.e. teal, how can I do that?
Thanks in advance.

You can set all or some of the tab canvas's pages the background color you wish:
Open the object navigator , and all the tab pages of the tab canvas.
Right - click on each one - or press F4 - to activate the property palette. Change the background color as you like....
Note: you can do this in just one click..... You simply select the tab pages and preesing F4 you alter the background color.....
Greetings.

• Inaccurate FCP Canvas Color Preview

I am getting FCP 7 this afternoon but I am not sure that it will address the problem I have been having in FCP 6 at all.
I have a NEC LCD3090WQXi and a 2690WQXi as my primary desktop displays. I have a AJA Kona3 outputting to a HI-5 SDI to HDMI converter box which shoots a signal to a 37" Samsung 1080P LCD. I also have the Kona3 outputting to a JVC DT-V24L3DY 24" Professional Broadcast LCD.
Here is the situation. The 37" Samsung looks quite similar to the JVC Studio monitor, as close as I would expect since the Samsung is a consumer monitor that I use to evaluate how video will look on a typical LCD/Plasma purchased from Best Buy or wherever. The JVC is perfect, true 1 for 1 pixel monitoring, built-in waveform, timecode displays, a great display that is very accurate.
Here is the PROBLEM. The NEC monitors are wide gamut, and display a much wider range of color than the typical Cinema Display (I have two 30" Cinema Displays so I know this for certain). The NEC's basically have a gamut that is identical to AdobeRGB 1998. I calibrate and profile the NEC monitors using the Spectraview II software and dedicated sensor so they are dead on. The problem is that FCP displays the video as super saturated, because it is not correctly using a system monitor profile to accurately display video (or stills). The external monitors are fine like I said, since they are not system color managed, but it is rather ridiculous that FCP does not recognize the display profile and correctly compensate the Canvas viewer within the application. Programs like After Effects and Photoshop handle all of these display profiles correctly, but it appears that FCP is doing absolutely nothing and that my only choice is to calibrate my wide gamut monitors to sRGB (the closest match to the HD standard of 709-5. This is a dreadful and pathetic work around.
I have read a couple of people converting images to AppleRGB for proper display in FCP, this is insane,AppleRGB is a gamma 1.8 colorspace with a gamut not matching HD video anywhere near the match that sRGB provides.
Any help here?

This is an incredibly frustrating topic because there are so many variables, but after a lot of lost hair, I have found these rules to work:
1. FCP, Color treat video as if it was a gamma of 2.2, and shift it on the fly to display correctly on a properly calibrated computer monitor ( I'm using 2 Sony Trinitrons, Eye1 calibrator), with ITU 601 for Standard Definition, and ITU 709 for HD, and the results are fine. Color correction with Color works just as expected. NOTE that the calibration is a little odd, as I am using the ITU color space definitions with a gamma of 1.8.
2. Quicktime, Photo to Movie, and most other video programs, display using whatever the monitor is calibrated to, so if you want to judge color there, you need a calibration run at gamma 2.2.
3. Quicktime has a switch that will force it to display video the same way FCP, Motion, and Color do. Make sure you know where that switch is set in the preferences.
4. FCP, AE, and others give you a choice of what gamma to use to interpret still photographs with. You need to make them match your workflow.
My workflow is to do all image editing in Adobe 1998 color space with a gamma of 2.2. My monitor is using a 2.2 profile.
When working with any FCP app, I use a icc gamma calibration of 1.8, and the appropriate color space. I set all imported stills to be interpreted with a gamma of 2.2.
Using an accurate spectrophotometer and test patterns, I have traced this from Photoshop to Quicktime to FCP display out to a well calibrated home theatre HD display. The results on all the test patches are within a dE of 3, which is well within the the band where the eye can detect differences.
When evaluating video in Quicktime, different codecs appear to be handled differently. I haven't cracked the code heve, and simply use FCP with a monitor gamma of 1.8 for critical evaluation
