Toolbar missing in illustrator CS4

just noticed that my toolbar is missing in illustrator.  using CS4 on windows vista.
never had a problem with it before.  only thing i've done differently is reset the computer back to an earlier date (only a couple months) and delete some temporary files while troubleshooting some hijack this files.
was very careful what to delete and had help from an expert on the techsupportguy forums. don't really think this is related to the problem except maybe setting the computer back.
i've closed all my open panels in illustrator, and tried turning off and on the toolbar.  the window only resizes but the toolbar doesn't appear.
i've tried different work spaces as well.
any tricks to getting it back or am i going to have to reinstall?
thanks in advance...

Let me ask a question, are you launching AI from an alias located on your desktop? Another Question did you move the Illustrator folder out of the Illustrator application folder and perhaps to a place where you could more easily launch it?
An alias is a copy of the icon of a folder or directory of fie that links it to the original and looks like the actual originl.
The aliases you know are My  Computer, Internet Explorer, Documents etc that you find commonly on a PCs desktop.
This is the scenario that often takes place on a mac and probably would cause the same problem on a PC.
Instead of creating the alias to use as a link to launch the application you either copied the application it self or you moved it to the desktop.
What that means is that some essential links between the application are now broken such as some of the tools and menu items that reside in the Applications folders such as filters and effects, file formats and extensions. So they are not showing.
The way to fix this is either move the application back to to the Illustrator folder and read about how to make an alias or just launch it from the Start menu or delete the copy if you have a copy of the application on the desktop and again either make a proper alias or launch from the Start menu.
I do not know how this might effect the preferences on a PC but on the Mac it sometimes corrupts the preferences and they have to be trashed as well as correcting the problem.
Having written all of this there was another way this can manifest itself on both a Mac and PC and you might do a google search if what I describe above does not apply to you.
It was actually posted here about four or five months ago and it involved deleting a file.

  • Ai CS4 toolbar missing

My Illustrator CS4 toolbar went missing, along with workspace options, and options under the window menu. I feel like I just hit a wrong button, and can't get it back.
    Thanks

    Tab key?
    This is for a Mac
But if you happen to be launching AI from what you think is an alias then you probably are trying to launch it from a duplicate of the application instead and which now resides outside the application folder.
What to do if this is the case first trash the duplicate (what you thught was the alias)
Then go back to the Illustrator folder and this time hold both the option and command keys down when you drag to make the alias.
What probably happened before is that you only held the option key down when dragging the application icon that ony makes a copy and nt an alias yu need to hold both the command and option keys.
    This is for a Mac
Now the next time you see a warning stating that the application has been moved and it needs t be reair yu will better understand that you made a copy by a slight of hand.
Now if you are not trying to launch from an alias.
Trash the Adobe Illustrator Settings Folder in your users preferences Users/Username/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings Folder

  • Missing tools in Illustrator cs4

    hey,
This problem is driving me crazy. I have Adobe Illustrator cs4 installed (win.Vista), it runs o.k but I'm missing a lot of tools- I get all the main tool groups but the groups wont open` so I have the line tool but not arc or spiral, I have warp tool but not twirl or bloat, text area but not text path and so on.
I have tried redirecting to plugins>tools via the edit>preferences>plug-ins and scratch disks dialog, but then when I load the software I get an error notice saying that some of the plug-ins conflict with... and it doesn't work. I've also tried deleting the AIpref. file from appdata but that didn't help.
What am I missing? this situation consumes too much of my time and sanity!
    thanx

  • Help! - tool in Illustrator CS4 missing

Hi! This tool in Illustrator CS4 is missing!  How do I solve this problem?? I have tried several things , but nothing helped!

Sorry, I can't find Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings?
    please look here: http://screencast.com/t/Le732Z2DsbtE
I have look through every folders under Adobe Illustrator .
I have a full Create Cloud subscription on my Mac laptop, - but when I am working in my company, in daytime, I use an old stationary Mac which cannot use Create Cloud subscription because this Mac is 6 years old (but works perfectly).  This Mac is connected to our CTP.
I take the files down to my company, where I'll take the files in from a USB and into Illustrator 4 - and from there I can then print directly to our CTP. When I am in the company I work daily with Illustrator 4, and on evenings and free time I worked with Adobe Illustrator CC 2014. So I do not really know what to do, I have to get Illustrator tool to work, so I can work from there to our CTP

  • Illustrator CS4 Toolbar Icons have 'smeared'!?!

    Hey folks,
Got a strange problem this morning when starting my work copy of Illustrator CS4, a large number of the toolbar icons have smeared for some reason? See the image below for what I mean, when you click and hold on any one of them all the tools in that family are also smeared, they all appear to work fine mind you.
Has anyone else had this problem and know of a solution? I have rebooted the system, updated CS4, updated windows, updated graphics driver
None of the other components of CS4 are having issues.
I am running CS4 design premium on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on a Dell Precision T5500, Xeon E5520 Processor with 12GB of Ram and a Nvidia Quadro FX1800 if that's any help to anyone.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jami.

I would think this was conflict of some kind more like a plug in than hardware.
However if it just started happening it might be something to do with a setting either in the drivers for the card or Illustrator or the system
you can try toreset your settings by holding down the control, alt and shift keys (all 3 together) while starting Illustrator.
That will reset the settings or you can move or delete the settings folder if that does not help, sometimes something else in the folder becomes corrupt.
Also this can be a conflict with a font, if you have installed or updated software recentlyI would suspect that software or font. Have you used any free fonts recently in a document?
Here is how you find and remove the settings foder
    1. Quit Illustrator.
    2. Rename the AIPrefs file (for example, to AIPrefs.old) in the Users/(user)/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings folder.
    3. Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new preferences file.
    4. you can also just trash this folder if the new preferences work out fine. Also if this does not work then move the entire Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings folder to a different location like your desktop for temporary storage Illustrator will create a new folder with all the elements required within the folder and those settings will be fresh default.
However if there is a conflict or hardware issues this will not  probably help.
if you do not find the in this location do a search for it.
Also if you have moved the computer or installed any hardware in your desktop it could be the card is no longer seated well or the card is not quite right or the display could be funny or going funny. But I do not think so.

  • Need help!  I have a plug-ins issue in illustrator CS4 after updating my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE

    Hi,
My Adobe CS 4 ran perfectly find up until I updated my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE. When I launch illustrator CS4 I get a window message the reads   "some plug-ins in the additional Plug-ins folder are conflicting with application or user plug-ins. It will skip loading plug-ins from additional plug-ins folder."  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading process, then a second window will appear reading  "Error loading plug-ins.  PhotoshopImport.aip"  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading and launch.
The problem is when I open a current file that has a psd link I will get a window message reading  "could not find a plug-in to read the link file _______ choose repair to locate the missing file, replace to select another file, or ignore to leave the link unchange."   When selecting a psd link /file it is greyed out which I cannot select it.  I can not select, choose, import or open any files/links that is a psd.
Would someone please help me resolve this issue please!!!

I have the same issue! Did you get a solution yet?

  • Trouble getting Illustrator CS4 to run, and when it does: no workspaces

At work (University of St Andrews) I have Adobe CS4 Web Premium and everything installs and runs okay apart from Illustrator CS4.
I've tried to install it on two different PCs, both Dell Precision workstations. One had Windows XP Professional 32-bit, the new one has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I get exactly the same behaviour on both. I've even tried to install it on Windows 7's XP Mode and I get the same error messages!
    INSTALLATION #1
When I installed it I got an error saying "Done, with errors". Details showed:
    Error
    Adobe Illustrator CS4 LangPack (en_GB)
    Error:
    Error 2
When I then tried to run the application it just wouldn't start, it would throw up an error message. It simply would not start.
    INSTALLATION #2
So I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and got the same error.
    COPY FILES - NO WORKSPACES
I then read this advice on a forum:
"Do you have a working install of Ai CS4 on another computer anywhere?
    If so, go into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator\Support\Required
and copy the Resources file to the same location on the computer that
encounters the error. I was having the same problem, but luckily I had a
working install on another OS, so I just compared the files between the
two installations and found the missing ones."
So I copied over these files from a working copy elsewhere in the department and this time the application ran but I now have no WorkSpace settings and cannot save any either.
    INSTALLATION #3
I then uninstalled again and tried to reinstall. This time on the installer I was given a number of language options. Rather than English (International) I selected English (US) and lo! and behold! the installer ran without errors and the application opened ok and this time I had WorkSpaces... the only problem was that it would only run in trial mode because it wouldn't accept my serial number, which I'm guessing is for English (International) only.
    INSTALLATION #4
Uninstall, again. Reinstall, again, this time in English (International).
Now the application opens but again I have no WorkSpaces, and cannot save any workspaces.
What can I do? Any idea how can I get a fully working version of Illustrator CS4 on my PC that includes workspaces?
    Thank you
    Gareth

    Hi Carey,
Thanks for your post. I have followed your instructions and here are my replies:
Are you having any issues with your other Adobe products, or is it just Illustrator?
If just Illustrator, did you previously install the product separately (i.e. as a trial, or as a pre-release/beta)?
I am having problems only with Illustrator CS4. I have not installed the product separately, either as a trial or a pre-release or beta.
In fact, I installed Adobe CS4 Web Premium on a clean, newly installed, straight-from-the-Dell-factory Dell Precision T7400. It was the first application I installed, and Illustrator wasn't working straight after the installation.
I've not had any problems with other Adobe applications. The only time the serial number became an issue was when I tried to reinstall Illustrator CS4 using "English (US)" as an option, simply out of curiosity as this hadn't been an option with the original installation of the whole suite.
    I followed the instructions:
    Deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4.
Updated permissions for Public Documents (although when I reached step 12: "Click Apply and click Permissions tab." there was no Permissions tab).
Reinstalled Illustrator CS4 from the setup.exe file. You said uncheck everything else, however the following applications would not allow me to untick them:
    Adobe Bridge CS4
    Adobe Extension Manager CS4
    Supporting Components:
              Adobe CMaps CS4
              Adobe CSI CS4
              Adobe CSI CS4 x64
Adobe Color EU Recommended Settings CS4
Adobe Color JA Extra Settings CS4
Adobe Color NA Extra Settings CS4

              Adobe Output Module
              Adobe PDF Library Files CS4
              Adobe Search for Help
              Adobe Service Manager Extension
              Adobe Type Support CS4
              Adobe Update Manager CS4

              AdobeColorCommonSetRGB
              Connect
              PDF Settings CS4
              Photoshop Camera Raw _x64
              kuler
The installer ran, and I got exactly the same error as before:
    Error
    Adobe Illustrator CS4 LangPack (en_GB)
    Error:
    Error 2
Now when I try to run Illustrator CS4 I get a dialog box saying:
    Error
The localized resource files for this application could not be loaded. Please reinstall or repair the application and try again.
This is the ninth time I've tried to reinstall it.
I'll try to send you a direct message with the serial number and take it from there.
    Thanks

  • How can you create a swatch from a jpeg in Illustrator CS4?

I am trying to create a jpeg image into a swatch in Illustrator CS4. In previous versions you could simply drag the image into the swatches toolbar and it would convert it automatically. Now when I do that nothing happens. When I click on new swatch it creates a colour swatch instead of the actual image itself.

When you say you would drag the image itself into the Swatch Palette and it would show the image itself? How would then use this swatch? Can you give an example of what you would apply a jpeg to as a swatch? The only palette that I can think of off the top of my head that you can drag a jpeg into and have the icon appear as the jpeg is the Symbols Palette. Is is possible that you were using the Symbols Palette in the past and not the Swatch Palette?

  • PRINTING? illustrator CS4 to HP Pro b9180

Does anyone have experience managing the color printing from illustrator CS4 to an HP Photosmart Pro 9180?
I am getting pretty innaccurate color. I usually do all my priinting thru photoshop but now need to do a lot of tiled printing so am working with AiCs4.
The problem I'm having is this - in Ai' s print dialog box there seems to be no way to turn the color management over to the printer - in print dialog the only choice is to let Ai manage the color... print > Color Mgmnt > "Let Illustrator determine color" and below that a printer profile is chosen. No choice who determines the color. Correct?
BUT then in the HP printer dialog box the choices under "color Matching" are not greyed out the way they are when printing in Photoshop and letting it handle the color.
This leads to "Color Matching" > "Vendor Matching" and further along under PaperType/Quality > Color Options > Adobe RGB (the space I work in). This is what HP tech recommended. I've tried all kinds of variations and combos of choices with absolutely bad results.
At this point I'm pretty flustered. Am I missing something? I'm used to getting near perfect results in printing so this is killin' me. This SHOULD be easy :-(
    thanks in advance...

  • Illustrator CS4 Not Starting (no error messages)

I'm running into a problem trying to run Illustrator CS4.  It has worked int he past, but I've gone a month or two without touching it. Yesterday I installed a trial version of Photoshop CS4, which ran fine.  Today I tried to start up Illustrator and I can't get the program running.
Illustrator will startup and show the 'License Agreement' screen where you can accept or decline.  If I click on Accept the screen disappears and then nothing happens.  If I watch the processes on the task manager, I see that Illustrator is running, but it stops about 10 seconds after the agreement screen disappears.
After searching the forums here, I've uninstalled Photoshop (thinking there was a conflict), uninstalled and reinstalled Illustrator several times with no luck.  Taking suggestions from the forums and thinking that it might be licensing issues, I ran clean up tools and the license recovery tools, with no luck.  I even tried to move out some fonts even though it doesn't get that far.  I've gone in and tried deleting what preference files I could.  I even logged on as a different user to see if there was a corrupt file (no go).
At this point I have no idea what's going wrong.  It simply doesn't start up and I have no errors (Are there log files that I'm missing somewhere?)  Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I'm at my wits end. :/
    Thanks
    Windows XP SP3
    4 Gigs of ram
    Dual monitors
    ran fine before :b

But are you running with full administrative privileges? AI hanging after the l.a., is a pretty clear indicator that the respective signature/ lock files for the licensing system cannot be created. Log in as administsrator and try to launch AI. If it works, then AI should work again under any user account. alsop check, whether the licensing service actually launches. May similarly be a problem with the service (FNPlicensingservice.exe) not starting and thus no license file being created.

  • Fontproblems and fontcaches in Illustrator CS4 and CS5

    Hello all,
I've been having a serious and severe problem using Ilustrator and fonts.
As this is a very complex problem to explain, I'll try to make it easy to understand.
First I'll tell you the specifications and software used:
Imac 27 inch running  MAC OS X 10.6.7 with follow software:
    Illustrator CS4 + Illustrator CS5, both installed
Fontreserve (running a central server and macs connect through a MAC-client) http://www.extensis.com/en/support/font-reserve.jsp
So we use an external third party fontsoftware to manage and activate our fonts used in Illustrator.
We only have the required system fonts installed on our systems.
We recently ran in a big issue concerning fonts within Illustrator.
I'll try to explain what the problem really is ...
So normally we boot up Illustrator and we activate our fonts in fontreserve.
The fonts get loaded in Illustrator. So that does work like it should.
But the problem begins when we deactivate fonts.
Font reserve does deactivate them and in Illustrator the deactivated fonts are gone or so it seems ...
After a restart, I only start Illustrator. So our client fontreserve stays closed.
I opened the job I worked on before the restart and Illustrator opens the document and loads the fonts.
You read it right, Illustrator does find all the fonts which, before the restart, were deactivated.
Where does he gets those fonts?
So I started to investigate and tried a couple of things.
    1) I physically moved the fontreserve-plugin out Illustrator so it will not be loaded on startup.
That didn't fix it because Illustrator still finds the fonts.
    2) I physically plugged out the network cable to be sure Illustrator could not contact our fontserver.
Sadly he still did find the fonts.
    3) I used "Tweak Freak" to clear my fontcaches. I also searched for "AdobeFnt" to clean out the cache from Adobe itself.
    This did not work either.
    4) I tried opening the document again but this time in CS5. And guess what? Illustrator CS5 asks for all the fonts that are missing, which is correct because not one font has been activated.
Strangly enough I decided to reopen Illustrator CS4 (Illustrator CS5 still beiing open as well), and suddenly Illustrator CS4 asks for the fonts too?
A minute ago he still found all the fonts and after opening Illustrator CS5, it does not ...
So Adobe what is the connection between Illustrator CS4 and CS5?
And where does Illustrator store its fontcache?
It would be nice to run a script on shutdown te delete all possible fontcaches.
So after spending a couple of hours fixing this problem, it seems that I still don't quite understand where the problem lies.
    I'm hoping you can.
As this is an urgent matter, I hope to get an answer or support as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to see what files Adobe Illustrator has open by using the Activity Monitor.app application.
To do so, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder). Locate Adobe Illustrator in the list and then double-click on it. This should open up a new window like shown in the image below:
Switch to the Open Files and Ports tab, and it should list every open file that Illustrator is using.

  • Problems Installing Adobe Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite

    Hi all,
When trying to install Illustrator CS4 on Mac OS X Yosemite, I receive an error: "required resources are missing."
Previously, I had problems using Illustrator CS4 when I upgraded to Yosemite, due to an error with the plugin "photoshopimport.aip." I had attempted to uninstall Illustrator, but the uninstall also gave me errors.  I ultimately used the CC Cleaner Tool to remove Illustrator.
Now, however, I can't reinstall Illustrator CS4 either!  I use the version provided on Adobe's website, so it's not a problem with a physical DVD.
Any ideas for potential solutions?  Many thanks!

I don't have an Adobe installation log, and it's not hidden either.  I tried installing Illustrator CS4 again, and I noticed that the install fails while ~80% through an "initializing" step.  So, it fails before it even starts to generate an install log!  I re-downloaded it and had the same error.
I did notice that I have some errors in the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool when I was removing Illustrator CS4.  If you look at my first post, I couldn't use it, or uninstall it, so I simply used the Cleaner Tool to remove it.  There are some errors in the Cleaner Tool log, such as this one:
2014-11-02 15:11:19.319 Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool[1573:8801317] The following session will be removed: bf2f18d647916c8449e4a221e4609a2

To make things worse, Adobe Support Advisor has been discontinued, which could interpret errors contained in Adobe logs.
I contacted Adobe support via chat, and they simply told me that Illustrator CS4 was not supported for Yosemite, and did not offer any further help or information...
Any other ideas?  Or am I simply stuck??
Thanks for all of your advice!

  • Artboards disappearing in Illustrator CS4

I'm using Illustrator CS4 on Mac OSX 10.6 and have created a 12 page document for folks at work.
Every time I re-open the document to make amends all but the first artboard have disappeared.
All the artwork content is still there, layers are fine etc but where the outline of the artboard page was there are now only guides Which are added to a layed named 'Guides For Artboard'.
When I create a PDF of this file it only does the one, first page. It's like it doesn't realise the rest of the pages exist.
But this doesn't happen to every document. It keeps happening to this one, it's happened to others but then when I open them again later they are fine.
    Is this a bug??
This file was created new in CS4 and is only edited by myself on the same machine.
Any suggestions would save me some serious grief!!
    Ta

No it's saved as a CS4 ai file.
But that did get me wondering, so I saved it as a AI CS3 file and upon reopening that it's done the same thing, added guides where my artboards were.
That makes sense as CS3 doesn't support multiple artboards.
But I am saving all my artworks as CS4 files and it's doing this to some of them which is what I don't understand.
Just wondered if there was a setting i'd missed or something

  • Trimming scanned artwork in illustrator cs4

    Hi All,
I often bring a scan into Illustrator cs4, and then want to trim it so I can work with only a part of it. I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I understand that you can mask it, but doesn't that bog down the file?  I have tried using scissors, but it says that I need to select a path. The scanned object is selected, which appears to be a path of sorts, so I must be missing something. Can anyone help?
    Thanks so much.

    spot 333,
I am afraid James is referring to the dirty destructive deed (if he is not, silly me; if he is, also silly me; this can only be a lose/lose situation I am afraid):
    With the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel  dropdown select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine);
    2)  Object>Flatten Transparency (just leave it at 100% vector and other  defaults).
This  will rid you of the parts outside the Bounding Box of the path that  shapes the Clipping Mask: a rectangle, even in case of other shapes such  as ellipses, which does not hurt in your case.
