Tools 8.40 on Solaris 10?

Hi,
I wanted to know what is the tools version that Solaris 10 machines support? Currently we are on Tools 8.40 and Solaris 8 and are now planning to upgrade to Solaris 10 (with the same tools version) and we want to know whether a tools upgrade would be required.
Thanks,
Vikas

Are PT8.40 still supported ? They even don't appear in the certification matrix on MOS (there are 8.22 and 8.44+).
You may want to raise a SR to ask your question about certification.

What happended to the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool 4.2 for Solaris 10?
I'm trying to debug a kernel panic under Solaris 10 on sparcv9. I tried the SUNWscat 4.1 package but it core dumps on Solaris 10. I found a blog entry that described the problem and mentioned a version 4.2 fix. That was from May 2006, but I have not found any update sense then. Was 4.2 ever released or is their an alternative tool for Solaris 10 that I can use?

One problem is that those of us who develop Solaris CAT do so as a "hobby" as it's not part of our actual jobs. But he good news is that management gave us the time to get a release out and 5.0 is now available here . We're now planning 6 month releases so we don't have a 5 year delay between updates.
BTW, the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool supports Solaris 10, OpenSolaris/Solaris Nevada, sparc, and x86/x64.
There are so many enhancements and bug fixes that I'd recommend reading the release notes (SUNWscat/docs/index.html).

  • LOM type tool for V210 in Solaris 10?

Is there a tool similar to LOM 2.0 that can pull daignostic information from the ALOM on server such as the V210 in Solaris 10? I tried installing LOM 2.0 from the Solaris 9 supplemental CD but of course it didn't work. Specifically I would be interested in pulling temperature information from the ALOM.
    Thanks!

    yes, no and maybe :-)
There is a command in /usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-V210/sbin which allows you to control the LOM, the name of this command is "scadm", the LOM packages on the supplemental CD are for different (older) types of LOM and doesn't to anything useful at all on a SunFire V210.
However, even though the scadm command let you administer the LOM, it won't display the temprature, but you can use the prtdiag -v command to display information about fans, tempratures and friends.
    Happy Easter.

Supposedly TogetherSoft Control Center does all this. However,

Anyone know of a SMART monitoring tool to use with Solaris 10 on a x2100? I tried smartmontools, but it is not properly implemented on x86 and ATA disks.

It's possible that with the 2nd drive in the system is seeing it as the primary (because of device name swapping) and it attempting to treat it as such. Check the following article:

  • Solaris 10 Support for Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H Motherboard

    Dear sirs,
I have been trying to get Solaris 10 to run properly on a Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H Motherboard.
The Solaris 10 operating system installed ok, but I have no network support. This is due to the standard and update drivers not working for this motherboard. I also cannot get video or audio subsystems to work.
I know this is due to Solaris 10 not recognising this motherboard, but my question is: Will Solaris 10 be supproting this motherboard in the future and doea anybody know if there are any Linux drivers which may work?
This is a link to the motherboard specs:
    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2800&
    ProductName=GA-MA78G-DS3H
Any help you may be able to give me would be most appreciated.

You can try this detection tool to see if Solaris 10 is/is not supporting your motherboard:
I doubt that Solaris 10 will be supporting more hardware/motherboard.
Have you tried Opensolaris? Opensolaris supportes more hardware than Solaris 10.
    HCL for Opensolaris is [http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/os/|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/os/]

  • What is the best way to backup ZFS filesystem on solaris 10?

Normally on Linux environment, I'd use mondorescue to create image (full & incremental) so it can be easily restored (full or file/folders) to a new similar server environment for restore purposes in case of disaster.
I'd like to know the best way to backup a ZFS filesystem to a SAN storage and to restore it from there with minimal downtime. Preferrably with tools already available on Solaris 10.
    Thanks.

the plan is to backup whole OS, and configuration files
2 servers to be backed up
    server A zpool:
    - rootpool
    - usr
    - usrtmp
    server B zpool:
    - rootpool
    - usr
    - usrtmp
if we were to cut hardware cost, it is possible to back up to samba share?
    any suggestions?

  • Solaris Logical Disks (Filesystems) not being discovered. WinRM CIM_ERR_INVALID_CLASS Error.

    Hello,
currently I am testing the Solaris monitoring with different kind of Solaris servers. We have one single system, a RAC database cluster of two servers, and one "Global-Zone" server hosting a "Non-Global-Zone". We're using SCOM
    2012 SP1 with Agent Version 1.4.0-906 (sparc).
My problem is, that only on one of the 5 servers the Logical Disks (Filesystems) are discovered correctly. All Solaris systems are using ZFS.
The one that works just fine is the single system. In Health Explorer under Hardware Availability Rollup I can find every filesystem that is also configured in the /etc/vfstab. A check with WinRM from the Management Server works fine (winrm enumerate hxxp://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wscim/1/cim-schema/2/SCX_FileSystem?__cimnamespace=root/scx
    -auth:basic -remote:https://<servername>:1270 -username:scomuser -password:<pass> -skipCAcheck -skipCNcheck -encoding:utf-8)
The same WinRM command does not work for the other servers. The WinRM command failes with following error code:
    Fault
        Code
            Value = SOAP-ENV:Sender
            Subcode
                Value = wsa:DestinationUnreachable

    Error number:  -2144108485 0x8033803B
The WS-Management service cannot process the request. The resource URI is missing or it has an incorrect forma
    t. Check the documentation or use the following command for information on how to construct a resource URI: "w
    inrm help uris".
As far as I can see in the scx.log, there are some messages like:

Do you have any idea what is going wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Holger

    Holger,
I believe it might be the (Too many files open) issue causing your problems. Try the following and let me know if it helps...
First confirm if this is the issue. Run the following command to find out the Solaris server's current file descriptor limit:
    ulimit -n
Next determine the number of file descriptors in use by the SCX Agent processes. A list of file descriptors is located under /proc/<Process ID>/fd, where <Process ID> is the process ID of the agent process running on the Solaris server which
can be obtained using the ps command. Or use the following command to list the PID’s and number of file descriptors for any processes containing microsoft/scx which should cover all of the SCX Agent processes:
    for i in `ps -ef | grep microsoft/scx | grep -v grep | awk '{print $2}'` ; do echo PID $i: `ls -l /proc/$i/fd | wc -l` ; done
Note: You must execute the above commands using sh, bash, or other Bourne-compatible shell. Be sure the commands are on a single line. If the result is a > sign, then press CTRL-C, check to make sure quotes and backticks are closed, and try again.
If the number of file descriptors returned is near the file descriptor limit obtained using ulimit, follow this procedure to increase the limit by putting a ulimit command in the SCX Agent startup script.
    1.
Find and edit the scx-cimd startup script, which should be located at /opt/microsoft/scx/bin/tools/scx-cimd in Solaris 10 and 11, or at /etc/init.d/scx-cimd in Solaris 8 and 9:
    vi /opt/microsoft/scx/bin/tools/scx-cimd
    2.   In the file, locate the section responsible for starting the agent daemon.
    start)
            # Start daemon
            echo "Starting $DESC"
            $DAEMON $OPTIONS
            exit $?
    3.
Below the echo statement, but before the line with $DAEMON $OPTIONS, insert this command on its own line:
    ulimit -n 1024
The end result should look like:
    start)
            # Start daemon
            echo "Starting $DESC"
            ulimit -n 1024
            $DAEMON $OPTIONS
            exit $?
    4.
Save the file and restart the agent:
    scxadmin -restart all

  • Monitor the OEM 10g from Windows or Solaris

    Hi,
I would like to monitor one instance Oracle 10g that is running on Solaris 5.10. I toolk the url (INFO: >>>>>>>>>>> The Database Control URL is http://zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:1158/em <<<<<<<<<<<) on the file emca_2010-08-27_05-32-20-PM.log.
Here my two questions about this:
first - I'm now on my Windows where I like to monitor my instance that is running on Solaris. I just put the url on my browse, but it can't open the url. The ping on the solaris is working. Any idea about the reason of why I can't access my instance with this url?
second - I'm using the exceed tool to access the solaris. My problem on the Solaris is that I don't know how start the browser there. If you know, can you tell me, please.
The output of the emctl status of dbconsole or agent is that they are running.
    Thanks in advance,
    Serge

    Dear 791633,
    Please see the emctl port number;
    $ emctl status dbconsoleYou should try different names to resolve it on the browser like ;
    http://ip_address_here:1158/em
http://host_name_here:1158/emOf course the host name should be known on the windows box.
    Hope That Helps.

  • Problem in Our Old Solaris

    Hi all,
We have SunOS 5.10 server with five (5) applications running.
Lately we encountered frequent running out of memory issues.
It seems that the server can not clean up run-away processes that still holding on the resources.
Even if we shutdown 4 applications and leave the 1 critical, the server still is crawling in performance.
We resolve this the rebooting the server and then the applications is good in performance again.
My question is, How do I kill and release or free-up all the held resources by run-away process?
I am only familiar with linux monitoring tools. Is there monitoring tool in SunOS 5.10 that will tell you how much total memory is free and used?. or how much % CPU is free and used.
Thanks you very much in advance.

I'm not sure exactly what resource you are talking about, but killing a process which holds a lot of memory or consumes a lot of CPU should immediately clear up its usage of memory/CPU.
If this is not happening there are two causes which i can think of:
    1) you killed the wrong process
    2) the process did not end but is still running.
The two most common tools to check a Solaris host for resource usage are prstat (to check the statistics of processes) and vmstat. Other tools which comes to mind are netstat (to check performance of network-related issues) and iostat (for disk activities).
There are also a lot of Dtrace scripts around which might come in handy (Google for the Dtrace Toolkit).
Also, if you are lucky someone installed 'top' on your system, which gives a quite good overview of CPU/memory usage. If its not there you can easily install if from www.sunfreeware.com

  • Solaris 10 vs Solaris Express

    Hi,
I'm a newbie here. My basic question follows: what is the difference between Solaris and Open Solaris(Solaris Express)? Which of them would you suggest for building a java development environment?
    Thx.
    gigo

Actually there are actually 3 versions. Solaris 10, Solaris express and open solaris.
Solaris 10 is the production version.
Solaris express is snapshots of the solaris 11 development work.
Theres also solaris express developer environment (SXDE) which is solaris express with the developer tools preinstalled.
Open solaris is the community project where the real development takes place.
As a development environment I would probably recommend going with SXDE but if your apps are going to be deployed in production on solaris 10 boxes, you probably need a solaris 10 box for deployment testing..
