Top Cropped on Video

I have imported a movie from my camera (Sony DCR-HC42). When looking at the thumbnails the movie looks perfect. But, when I play it, the top is cropped off of everything. Any idea why, or how to fix?

OK Here is one more thing to try.
First, Do you have the Advanced Tools available? To do this, click iMovie/Preferences. Then but a checkmark by "Show Advanced Tools". This is at the bottom of the preferences window.
The Advanced Tools should now be showing in the space between the Projects Pane and the Events Pane.
Now you will see the CROP tool. It is the button on the Advanced Tool Bar that is the thirsd from the right. Click it and you can crop your video. Your choices are FIT and CROP. If you choose FIT, it will use you footage to try and fill the screen for your chosen aspect ratio. If you choose CROP, you can move around a box to choose what part of the frame is showing. I recommend playing around with it until you get the results you want.
Good luck.

  • When i crop a video using FCE, how can i export just the selection?

When using the cropping tool with FCE 4, say i just crop out a single square from near the top of the video. if i were to export this video now, the new video would consist of the cropped out selection surrounded by black. is there anyway i can export the cropped out selection without the black? i'm not looking to rescale the image, just to remove the selection at it's original size without all the black around it.

FCE's a fixed-resolution editor and there's no way to export at the resolution of your cropped image unless it matches one of the sequence presets.  In FCP you could set a custom resolution and export as that.

  • Won't crop my video.

I am trying to crop my video to do a clone effect. I've watched many videos and tutorials on this. I use the crop tool, but when I try to crop it, nothing happens. In the tutorials I've watched, to big white thin lines go across the screen making an X when putting one clip over the other. But it doesn't do that for me. What do I do?

It sounds like you need to turn on "Image + Wireframe" in the Canvas window. Click on the box top right center of the Canvas (to the right of the button displaying percentage) and make the selection.

  • It's cutting the top of my video off!

I uploaded my video and it looks great but then when I move it up to the library for the last editing, it cuts off the top of my video. I'm interviewing a coach and part of his face is cut off. But when I put my mouse over the video, the video looks good. Then I push play and it cuts his face off.
    What am I doing wrong?

Open the clip inspector for the clip (in your project) Go to the "Rotate, CROP, Ken Burns" tab of the inspector. Select FIT rather then CROP.
You can also go into Project Properties and set FIT as the default for new clips that you add to the project.

  • How do I legitimately crop a video to 2.35:1 rather than just artificially do it.

So premiere allows you to use the crop effect, or crop the video during the exporting (on source you can delete pixels on top and bottom). But this only adds black bars to the video, the video is still physically a 16:9 video, just with black.
How can I do this. (I want to upload to vimeo and it be a legitimate 2.35:1 video rather than a 16:9 with black bars).
    Thanks

dont worry about "Source scaling", can leave that on "scale to fit". just change the output resolution to match the crop. uncheck aspect ratio icon (the chain link) so you can adjust the height pixels independent of the width.

  • "Trimming off" the top of the video in iMovie?

Alright, so I'm recording Minecraft(a video game) with Screenflow for a youtube video and editing in iMovie. Problem is, in the UI of minecraft, the version number is shown in the upper-left corner of the screen. I'd like to somehow "trim" the top sliver of the video off so it doesn't show this. Is that possible? I've tried cropping but the cropping options are inexcusably light and imposing a "black box" image on the top of the video is impossible because it doesn't allow your to "Stretch" the image properly. How can I go about doing this?

So when you crop using the crop tool, you are getting a black rectangle after you apply the cropping? In searching the iMovie Help, these are the directions on how to use the Crop Tool in iMovie '11.
To crop a video clip or still image:
In the Project browser, select a video clip or photo, and then press the C key or click the Crop button.
Click Allow Black if there are black borders on the image that you want to be able to include in your crop.
Allow Black applies to photos only, not to video.
In the viewer, click Crop, and then drag to resize and reposition the green cropping rectangle to focus on the part of the image you want.
To resize the cropping rectangle, move the pointer to a corner of it until the pointer turns into a plus sign, and then drag.
Click the Play button in the viewer to preview your work.
When you’re satisfied with the crop, click Done.
Whether you crop media in a project or an Event, you can change or remove the crop at any time by selecting the cropped photo or video, clicking the Crop button, and then making whatever changes you want.

  • Imovie 11: When moving clips from event to project, the top of the video clip is cut off.

I'm working with a new project. When I add clips from an event to the project window, the top of the video clip is cut off.  Quite a bit of it is cut off.  It happens on every clip.  The aspect ratio is correct and I've set the video to fit in frame.  How can I fix this?  I would really appreciate any help.

You may have stabilization turned on in the project. On one of the clips, click on the small gear icon at the start of the clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that opens, uncheck the box "Smooth Clip Motion" against Stabilization. If this fixes it for you, do the same for the other clips.
Also, it's a good idea to turn off certain preferences in iMovie>Preferences (an iMovie menu item). In the Browser tab uncheck the boxes for both "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed" and "Apply rolling shutter correction for clips that have been analyzed". See this picture:
The stabilization process causes a zoomed in effect on the video, as it has to "average" the pixels in order to smooth any shaky motion. You therefore lose a certain amount of the picture, depending on the extent of stabilization applied. Here's what iMovie Help states (in part) about this process:
"iMovie stabilizes video by analyzing the camera motion in the video and then moving the picture the opposite way to steady it onscreen. In this process, iMovie zooms in on the picture slightly. The amount of unstable motion in the clip determines how much zooming is necessary.
Zooming in crops out some of the picture, but you can fine-tune the level of stabilization to strike the right balance between keeping the video steady and retaining as much of the picture as possible."

  • How to crop a video in Premiere Elements 13?

How do I crop a video in Premiere Elements 13?  I see 'pan and zoom.'   And, it retains the aspect ratio automatically, but I don't always need the 'pan' or the 'zoom' -- just want a tight shot on an actresses' sunglasses, which reflect something she is shocked to see.  When I go to help and ask about cropping, it sends me to Photoshop.  Still learning here.

Seems that it is impossible to crop video frame in 13, all guidelines in Adobe pages or any other lead to versions 12 or older, crop is not anymore in same place. Little odd, very simple and needed tool. FreeSpeechZOne have asked this long time ago and no answer??

  • How to crop a video

So we have a wmv file that we are cleaning up using Soundbooth CS4. Don't really have any experience with SB, but it was included with our Creative Suite install so we thought we would give it a go.
We didn't even think we could crop a video, but when we do a "save as..." from the original file there are these crop settings in the export dialog that really seem to suggest that we could. So we select the crop tool, adjust the size, set some of the other properties that we want to change on the other tabs and save as...
And then we get the progress bar and it process and process. And eventually the new file shows up in the files tab. And it is exactly the same size and uncropped.
So are we just not understanding what that is supposed to do? Or does it just not work? Or ... ? ? ?
    Thanks for any help.

Soundbooth (and the other applications in the video suite) usually route video through a separate Media Encoder application.  I was able to reproduce this issue when cropping video files, but was not able to reproduce this problem in the very latest build of the tool, so it looks like it may be fixed.  You might want to try updating the next time that Adobe Updater pops up, hollerin' about updates, and see if that helps.
Okay.  While this looks like a simple new paragraph, I've actually been sifting through their bug database and found the bug report.  Looks like this was fixed by the team in the last 2 months, so it's unlikely to be fixed in any updates out right now.  Sorry you ran into the bug, but thanks for the detailed steps and information.

  • When I Share my project using QuickTime the top of my video is chopped off, how do i fix this?

when I Share my project using QuickTime the top of my video is chopped off, how do i fix this?

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system is it running?
    - Mac OSX; Premier Elements 11 v11
Where is the audio in the project - numbered audio tracks, Narration Track, and/or Soundtrack? Any chance that you are using a XviD.avi file?
    - audio is either in the soundtrack , or in audio 2 when part of a video
Besides the full properties of your source file including file extension, what are the full export settings that you are using presumably for Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG?
    - i was just using the default for MPEG, which is the NTSC DVD standard, file type MPEG2-DVD
What player are you using? Does the file playback video and audio using the VLC player? Does the problem exist in a new project?
    - i have tried in quicktime and VLC, both have the same effect (picture works, staccato background noise).  I have not tried in another file, but will do so now.

  • Is there a way to crop a video clip after I rotate it?

I rotated a clip due to faulty attachment of my helmet cam.  Is there a way to crop the video clip after rotating it 4 degrees?  I would hate to lose this footage, but I cannot use it as it is.

If your export looks like the screenshot in post 6, then please write your Publish+Share settings in a reply to confirm your present situation.
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    and then what?
    MPEG
    AVCHD
    XAVC-S
    AVi
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
    Image
    Audio
You might only be seeing MPEG, AVCHD, and XAVC-S in the list because the other are hidden from view. You need to use the small scroll bar to the right of the choices to scroll down to the ones beyond XAVC-S.
If you select MPEG and do nothing but accept the first choice of Presets which is NTSC DVD Standard, then you are going to get a 4:3 export. Under those circumstances, you have a 16:9 project setting, then you are going to get the type of result that you are seeing in post 6.
If you are doing that, then look at the MPEG Presets = NTSC DVD Widescreen, do your export, and let us know if all is OK.
Do you have any special receipt requirements for the export? With further information from you, I will help you with the export setting appropriate for your project and maintaining what you are created in the edit area.
    Thanks.

  • Top half of video is missing on imported WMV files. Running  CS3 & Win XP Professional

Top half of video is missing on imported .WMV  files. I'm running CS3 Adobe Premier Pro with Win XP Professional OS
    Hi all,
I just installed my Adobe Premier Pro CS3 for the very first time. I then IMPORTED a WMV file into the Project Frame and  then Dragged & Dropped it into the Time Line. All the windows (or Frames) Project Frame, Source Frame and the mini-Project Frame show this video with the top half missing. I’m running Win XP Professional with the latest Service Packs installed.
    Please Help.
    Thanks
    Derek

After Searching the net for a while here, I found a solution to the "Half Screen" problem!
The half screen video problems seen while trying to play WMV files in my CS3 Adobe Premiere Pro program seems to have been due to a recent Windows software Security update made to it’s Windows Media Player programming. As soon as I removed that update, my WMV files now show normally within Adobe Premier Pro.
If you wish to uninstall this Windows Patch / Security Update on Win XP Machines:
No#1 Prior to removing/un-installing the file, shut off "Windows Automatic Updates" and set update preferences to manual. Thus in the future you can select which Updates you want to instal (and which one not to instal)  *remember to ignore the KB2834904 update in the future! That is at least until Widows fixes this Security Update / Patch.
    A) Go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel
    B) In the Add/Remove Programs, check the "Show Updates" box located at the top of that window
    C) Scroll down to "Windows XP Software Updates" and within that section, scroll down to "Security Update for Windows Media Player" KB2834904 (mine was dated 7-10-2013)
    D) Click on the REMOVE button and re-start your system.
If using Win 7 Operating System: to remove this Patch / Security Update the file to remove is: KB2803821 - In Windows 7, go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel, click on the "View installed updates" link in the left sidebar, search for KB 2803821 and click REMOVE.
    Good luck everyone!

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Automatically Crops Source Video Upon Import

This is really confusing me and I've never had this kind of trouble before.  I have source videos that are 720x480, but as soon as I import them into Premiere, they are cropped to 540x480.  It's not a problem with sequence settings or anything, because the imported source file is cropped before it's even in a sequence.  I tried looking on-line for a solution, but couldn't find any.  Does anyone know how this can be fixed...maybe some import settings that I don't know about?
Here are some screenshots to visually represent what I was saying:
This is properties of the video
This is what Premiere automatically does right after the video is imported as a source
This is a screenshot when played with VLC:
This is a screenshot when played from the source in Premiere:
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.  This video is due Saturday and all my footage is cropped, please help me.  Thank you!

    11.  Re: Adobe Premiere Pro AND Adobe Premiere Elements 13 Automatically Crops Source Video Upon Import
My AP Elements (version 13) has exactly the same bug. I have a DVD where 25% of every VOB file's images' right border has been cut away during the inserting phase into Elements. No adjusting of frame and pixel aspect ratios, black borders narrow or wide, project settings automatic or manual do not help. Gone is gone. But the same VOB files play normally (100% image) in many other players/editors. I have experimented with VLC and Wondershare Video Converter.
On the other hand Elements is able to read correctly other DVD's VOB files. See discussion about this very same bug in Elements thread.

  • When I Crop a video it doesn't fill the frame back up, it just outlines it in black and stays the same size

When I Crop a video it doesn't fill the frame back up, it just outlines it in black and stays the same size

No, I am using the crop function, and the directions say after I press done it will fill the frame, which worked a year ago. Now when using th Crop function, the black area stays black and the cropped video stays the same size. I even shared it to a Master file to see if it would process during sharing, but the black area remained black and the cropped video remained the same size. Still a bit frustrated.
