Top half of display blocked out

I believe the announcement posted at the top of this board contains errors that are repeated throughout numerous posts on this subject (eg MS update causes problems).
First, the update shown for Win XP (KB2834904) may be incorrect --the CORRECT update may be KB2834903  --at least that is what shows up for my XP-Pro SP3 system.  (The actual update may vary depending on the actual version of Windows Media that is installed.)
Second, from the various posts of users encountering this problem it seems that many have taken the over zealous and aggressive 'solution' of doing a system (restore point) rollback and removing all patches released on 7/9/13.  This is unnecessary, and is not permanently effective.  Simply rolling back all updates will then cause them to show as not installed and still needed the next time the system is scanned for needed updates --probably in the next day or two.
A better solution --(until MS releases a corrected update) is to simply mark the update as hidden by going to:
         Win 7                                                                 Win XP
Windows Update;                                             Windows/Microsoft Update;
right-click on the update;                                 UN-check the box on left for the update AND click on the "+" box
and select hide.                                                 and check the box "Don't show this update again".
The user will then have to monitor the Windows/Microsoft Update for a re-released version of the update.  To monitor the updates for revisions periodically look at either of the KB articles or Microsoft Security Bulletin MS13-057 by googling the numbers.  At the very bottom of the respective document is a section labeled "Revisions".  Curently the only version listed is: V1.0 (July 9, 2013) Bulletin published.   If/when Microsoft releases a revision to fix this update, the version number and date will be incremented along with a brief explanation for the revision.

I just saw your reply ( http://forums.adobe.com/message/5506470#5506470 ) in another post where you apparently included a picture of the setting you have for your MS Update downloads.  As I noted earlier in this post the devil is in the details.  If the picture is truly the download setting option you have set, then it could explain how this/certain KnowledgeBase updates are getting installed despite your wishes.
The setting I use/recommend --especially until this situation is corrected--
is not:         "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"                           (2nd choice in the dropdown list)
but rather:  "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"   (3rd choice in the dropdown list)
The difference may seem subtle, but the option you appear to be using in fact allows the update to actually be downloaded and stored in your PC, then subsequent installation of other desired updates could have the unintended consequence of also installing the undesired update.
The more desirable choice checks only for updates and does not download anything --yet--.  This give you a clear chance to 'hide' the undesired update(s); before they ever get downloaded to your PC.

    You are never going to believe this.
    Up to the last time I used my Windows 7 64 bit computer with Premiere Elements (about 1 am this morning), I was having no problem with the display.
    Just now I went to do some troubleshooting with a .wmv file that I use all the time for mini test runs only to get 1/2 the display.
    Windows Updates
    and what was described as
    Microsoft Windows
    Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2803821)
    7/11/2013
    was found and deleted and solved the problem. Apparently the KB number is different in Windows 7 than XP. In my Window 7 64 bit, the KB number to be deleted was KB2803821. In Windows XP, I was told it is KB2834904.

  • Most of the top half of my Edit Menu in Safari is grayed out.  How can I get it functioning again?

    Yesterday and today the top half of my Edit Menu in Safari 5.1.10 is grayed out and unusable.  I have tried everything I can think of including reinstalling Safari, repairing permissions, restarting.  I am at a loss.  Can someone tell me what to do to get the menu working again?

    I'm replying to my own question - I have no idea what has changed in five hours, but I just logged on again to see if anyone had repllied to my question - and the problem is fixed!  A total mystery to me, but thank you anyway.  I think these discussions are of great help when you have a problem and no "guru" to go to.  Thanks.

  • Image displaying with blocked out areas

    Hi - I am new to these forums so I hope this is the right place for this.  I downloaded an image of a web template to look at the colours more closely before possibly purchasing it and when I opened the image in CS4 it had a bunch of triangular blocked out areas - kind of like a mask of some sort I think.  I then tried creating a new document and opening an existing, unrelated PSD file and now they have the same triangular blocked out areas.  Help please!!!

    Sorry for the delay - I tried uninstalling and reinstalling without success... I also opened a different pre-existing .PSD and it had a different display issue than this one.  The image below is from a new document creation, but the same pattern still showed up in a document that I had initially opened.

  • I used the ticker tape mode to add subtitles to a clip. When playing it in the pc, the Subtitles are fine, however, when playing it on the tv, only the top half of the words are visible. Any idea why?

    I added subtitles to a movie clip using the ticker tape option. When viewing on the iMac, the words are visible, however, when playing it in the tv, only the top half of the words are visible. Does anyone know why?

    I would agree with Keith Barkley, it may be the TV Safe Area. You can see what spots might be blocked out or cut off by going to iDVD and opening the original DVD project, under the View Menu > Show TV Safe Area. If your title gets cut off by the cropping rectangle displayed, that may account for the cut-off.

  • After screen replacement, top half of screen starts by looking normal but then fades to black while bottom half stays bright but with images blury. What might went wrong?

    A friend recently gave me their old Macbook pro 15 because they broke the screen and the Apple store quoted them $500-600 to fix it. I looked online and bought a screen of ebay for $170 in hopes of fixing it myself. After getting the screen I hooked it up using the steps I found online. Sadly when I turned it on, the top half of the screen was working apparently normally, but then it faded to black. The bottom half stayed bright with color the whole time but the images were always blurred. When I close the screen with it on, then open it after turning the computer on, the top half lights up with my desktop images as if it is working fine but then fades to black. The bottom is still blurred the whole time. What all could be wrong? Display cable, Inverter cable, not registering the screen or something, the screen is bad? I don't now a ton about all this and I have learned most of what I know from online research. I am not sure if I should send the screen back or if there is another issue. I just want to fix this thing.

    Unfortunately, you don't even know the lower half of the computer is working properly, because you didn't have it until after it had been abused. So forget the attached screen for the moment. Connect an external monitor to it, fire it up, and see whether you can get a usable image on the external screen. If you can, send the defective "new" screen back for a refund, or replace the LVDS video cable first to make sure that's not where the problem lies, and if it isn't, then resort to sending the screen back. If you can't get a good image on the external, give the junk machine back to your friend and walk away.

  • IMac G5 2.1 G Bottom Half of Display Doesn't Work

    A friend of mine on 11/11/05 bought from an Apple Store an iMac G5 2.1 G. About five weeks ago the bottom half of the screen went out. The top half is fine, but the bottom half is shot. A week later he took it back to the Apple Store, and they determined that it would cost $1100 to fix, so he kept it and bought a new one for $1300.
    He didn't have the three year warranty, but the person at the Genius Bar told him that he was twelve days late to get it fixed for free. I told him that he should go back to the store and pursue this, but he doesn't want to worry about it. Nonetheless, is he just the victim of bad luck, or does he have any recourse for a free repair?
    Thanks - Somethingfromnothing

    In other words, is there any way at all to somehow bypass the password and back it up to iTunes?

  • We have an iPhone 4S and can only see the top half of the screen.

    We have an iPhone 4s and can only see the top half of the screen.  The phone works fine as far as making calls and you can kind of text, if you can figure out where the keypad is.  Is there a fix for this or is it trash?  It is out of warranty and we don't have insurance on it.

    Then I guess you'll have to live with a broken phone as a new one is your only option.

  • Why would links or search bars on the top half of the page not work on any site when i use firefox but work fine in IE?

    links and search bars on the top half of pages dont work and its not that i click them and they dont work but it wont let me click them its like it doesnt see them

    Recently, the Yahoo Toolbar and the Babylon extension have been reported to cause that problem. They seem to overlap invisibly over the top of the web page display. If you have either or both, uninstall or disable them/it, or see if an update is available that solves the problem.

  • Top Half Becomes Black Again, After Removing Update

    Hi, I'm very unexperienced as I have just gotten into video editing so bear with me when I do not know what to do.
    On a recent thread, the cause of the top half of the screen being black was do to a Microsoft update, which I had removed the other day and successfully fixed the problem.
    However, after opening up the program (Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0) today I imported a new file into a new project which resulted in the top half being black again. Yes, my files are in WMV because I am just a YouTuber and the format suits my basic editing and filming just fine (I have seen many arguements about how 'dumb' it is to use this format) and that's what format my camera spits out. I have made sure that the update doesn't reoccur, but the issue is back. Help?

  • Display:block not showing anchor link as a block in IE9

    The display:block CSS code is making the anchor link inside a div, i.e.
    <div><a>some text</a></div>
    behave as a block in a site viewed in Chrome etc.
    However, it is not behaving like a block in IE9. Instead of the whole width of div which should behave like a block and be clickable, only the actual text of anchor link <a> is clickable.
    Please advise on how to ensure the whole div behaves like a block in IE9 also.

    I checked and found that the probable problem is as described below.
    I have indicated the style for a.link and a.visited in the starting of the css file as
    a:link { color:#009900; text-decoration: underline;}
    a:visited { color: #4E5869; text-decoration: underline;}
    Later in the css file, I have defined styles for cbt, cbt a, cbt a:link and cbt a:visited separately. the styles for cbt etc is as below:
    cbt { display:block;  float:none;
    position: relative;
    margin:5px 2px;
    padding-left:1px;
    padding-right:1px;
    padding-top:5px;
    padding-bottom:5px;
    z-index:4;
    clear:both; }
    cbt a, cbt a:link {  font-size: 1em;
    text-decoration:none;  text-align:justify;
    text-justify:inter-word;
    font-weight:normal;
    word-wrap:break-word;
    color:#00C;  display:block; }
    cbt a:visited { color:#CC0033; }
    The anchor link a is nested inside cbt tag in the html file as
    <cbt><a href="abc.com">some text</a></cbt>
    Inspite of the above codes, the anchor link a inside cbt tag is not taking the styles defined with cbt a, cbt a:link, but is instead taking styles defined in a:link initially.
    Hence they are behaving as inline elements in IE9 when hosted on remote server by taking the initial style defined.
    However,when the same page are viewed on localhost in IE9, the links behave as block elements (taking the later defined styles). The links also behave as block elements inside Chrome browser when viewed on localhost as well as on remote server. In this situation the links are taking the styles defined later in the css file.
    Please advise on why the css behaviour is so erratic.

  • Do third party replacement tips fit on the apple in ear headphones? I prefer foam tips as they block out much more sound, but I'm not sure if Apple use the standard fitting for headphone tips!?!?!?!

    Do third party replacement tips fit on the apple in ear headphones? I prefer foam tips as they block out much more sound, but I'm not sure if Apple use the standard fitting for headphone tips!?!?!?!

    Answer found. Please find below an amazon review explicitly mentioning adding third party foam tips. Sounds like they fit and work like a dream:
    "As a audio engineer, I own about a dozen different sets of earphones and in-ear 'phones. My favorite, by far, are my sure SE530s. I have some Sennheiser cx400s which are good workhorses, but lack the finesse, clarity and stunning accuracy of the Shures. For convenience, I bought the Apple's, as I wanted something I could use with the phone for calls.
    I found the sound to be quite clear and beautifully clean, but like many, no matter how I tried, the stock Apple tips never made a good seal. The seal is absolutely essential to getting bass out of a balanced armature design. For you non-engineers, just trust me that if you don't have a proper seal, you will have no bass.
    In my case, I think the trouble had to do with the largest size being a tiny bit too small, and the silicon being too rigid, yet slick, so they left small airgaps and were easy to remove. I tried using some foam tips from a third party, but their large was more of a medium, and never came close to a snug fit.
    As an experiment, I dug around in my ear-tips from my Shure's and tried their rubber tips which are about the same size as Apple's large tips, but made of a more pliant and slightly sticky rubber.
    OMG, what a transformation. Suddenly the sound blossomed, the bass became rich and well balanced, and the "top-heavy" sound was totally mellowed into a rich, well balanced and incredibly detailed presentation.
    Make no mistake, these are the best 'phones under $200 I have ever heard. The bass is deep and warm, very detailed, and totally lacking fuzz or buzz that I can hear in the Sennheiser set. Look at getting tips from a better headphone. The trick is it has to have a soft rubber base that can expand over Apple's slightly larger stub. Some tips, like the Shure foam tips, have a rigid plastic sleave in the tip to keep it's position correct, and these won't expand over the larger Apple posts."
