Top-level keyword problem

I have just two hierarchical levels in my keyword list - for example "animal species", which contains lion, tiger, bear, etc. "Bird species", which includes pelican, flamingo, etc.
The top level words are set not to export, and if I export a dng as tiff, of course they don't carry through to the tiff.
My problem is I'm re-doing all my keywords, assigning them to the raw, then using exiftools to copy them to the tiff (could just as well be vice-versa, doesn't make any difference). In this case there is no exporting. The tiff were long ago exported and have been finalized. I'm not re-exporting them from raw. The new keywords are just being written into the xmp for both tifand dng. Since the files have not been exported per se, the top-level keywords do show up if I browse the files in other programs that read iptc.
Any thoughts? I don't want any of these top level keywords to carry through when other programs that read iptc handle the files. They do not show up in the "Keyword Tags" field under the "Keywording" section header, or I would just do a select all and delete them from there. I don't want to remove them from my keyword list though, as I like the help they provide in organizing the keywords.

The same problem from 2007 - no answer then

  • Top-level Keyword dilemma- can someone explain "include"?

Aloha fellow LR users! I use LR 1.4.1 and LR2beta on windows Vista 32 PC. My problem is with top-level keywords. I have read many blogs and other keyword procedure specific tutorials on the web. Most all of them are extremely useful and enlightening, but none of them seem to explain the option definitions for keywords in terms that I understand.
If I right-click and choose edit keyword a dialogue box presents several options, some of which depend on whether an image is selected or not. Ill proceed as if no image is selected.
Three basic options (numbered here for reference only) are checked by default:
    1-Include on Export
    2-Export containing keywords
    3-Export synonyms
Option 3, I pretty much understand and I get that synonyms are NOT included on Export when the option to maintain LR hierarchy is UNCHECKED in the Export dialogue box.
My real question boils down to; do these options only refer to actual exports or do they affect the keywords applied to an image?
Okay, I dont use the traditional controlled vocabulary that serious pro level photographers use, but I have created one that works for me. There are times when I would prefer the top-level keyword NOT be included in the metadata. Is that even possible using LR? I assumed that de-selecting option 1 would prevent it from being included, but it hasnt worked for me.
If anyone can enlighten me with defining these options, I would be grateful.
    Thank you.

    >My real question boils down to; do these options only refer to actual exports or do they affect the keywords applied to an image?
Yes they do refer to export. Lightroom will apply the keywords to your image regardless of these export settings.
    >2-Export containing keywords
    When on will export Parent,Child
When off will export Child only.
The option on the export page "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy" uses the | (vertical bar or pipe) as keyword hierarchy separator and will write keywords as
    Parent|Child when checked
Parent.....Child when not checked (..... represents tab character)
    >There are times when I would prefer the top-level keyword NOT be included in the metadata. Is that even possible using LR? I assumed that de-selecting option 1 would prevent it from being included, but it hasnt worked for me.
When you add a keyword to an image the Parent is also added. There is no option to turn this off. Neither can you create a Top Level keyword tag using the same name as an existing Child keyword. But you can choose to export only Child keywords using option 2 in your list.

  • How can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image?

    Hello,
I want to know how can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image. I know there is an option for not applying a keyword to an exported image, but is there an option for not applying the top level keyword to the actual image?
I have organized my geographical (by location) keywords like this:
    Places
    USA
    New York
    Miami
    Spain.
If i add geographical keywords to all my images, all my images will have the keyword "Places", i dont think that it have any sence to have all your images with one keyword. How can i fix this? Any sugestion? i will appreciate it a lot any help or information that you could give me.
Excuse my english, i know it is not good. I hope that you could understand me.
    Thanks,
    Marcelo :)

Explicitly excluding a keyword only applies when "exporting". Unfortunately, there's currently no way to stop the keyword being written to the file when "Save Metadata to File" command is used. The natural reaction of users to this difference is to suggest that it is stupid. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the difference exists:
    1. "Export" creates a new file whereas "Save Metadata to File" writes the metadata back into the existing file.
    2. There are very good reasons why certain keywords should not be written to file, and the example given in the OP is one. Saving metadata to file is more often used as means of backing up important image related metadata, independently of the catalog or allowing the metadata to be visible in other aplications. It would be rare that such a file would be shared with a third party, so the reason for not including certain keywords is less obvious. Actually, not including it can result in no end of confusion and grief. For example, if the top level (or any keyword) was excluded during the save metadata process then the other keywords would be orphaned when image is imported back into the catalog (e.g. buiding a new catalog).
The development team are aware of the need, in some circumstances, to exclude certain keywords when save metadata command is used. How and when the issue is resolved, without adding even more confusion/complexity, is some way off.

  • How to exclude top-level keywords from export?

    Hi,
I have keywords organised into a hierarchical structure; I never want the top-level keywords to appear in the exported image but can't find a quick way to do it.
I can make it work by going to one of it's children and editing that keyword tag, unchecking the "export containing keywords" however I can't see a way of batch performing this action and the number of keywords I have make it impractical to do one by one.
I tried clicking on the top-level keyword and unchecking the export option. It still exports and is even listed when I make the keyword tags dropdown "Will Export".
If any of your gurus know the answer or can explain how I am misunderstanding the export terminology, please let me know...
    Thanks,
    Steve
PS I have tried exporting with & without option "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierachy"

Thanks for that - its nearly right but I had tried doing that already and it didn't work.
The reason why is when simply unchecked the Export Containing Keywords and Export Synonyms remain ticked but greyed out. I assumed that having been greyed out they are no longer effecting the output in any way but I was wrong.
So, simply uncheck ALL the items in that dialogue box for top-level terms.
    Thanks again!

  • Top Level Navigation Problem

    Hi guys,
recently, I ran into something really strange. The Top Level Navigation (TLN) became faulty. If the user clicks on certain entries in First Level Navigation or Second Level Navigation the content area is not loaded properly. The content area stays empty as well as the detailed navigation iView (no navigation entries listed). Furthermore, the TLN does not get updated.
The weird thing is it only affects a few users and the set of affected navigation tabs is different for every user. The problem affects standard tabs (System Administration, Content Administration, etc.) as well as custom tabs. The set of affected users and the set of affected tabs seems to be arbitrary chosen.
A new log entry is written every time the problem occurs. Find an example below:

While searching SDN I found a SAP Note that might be interesting. SAP Note 982496 contains the description of a similar problem with almost the same error message. However, this SAP Note describes a problem of NW 2004 SPS 17. A problem that should be solved in newer releases. We patched our system last time (NW2004s SPS 09) a few month ago. We never had any similar problems until last week when the above described problems started.
Unfortunately, the problem starts to escalate. More and more users and more and more navigation tabs are affected.
Does anyone of you have any experience with this kind of problems? Please suggest how to troubleshoot and solve this very annoying problem. Of course, I am going to reward helpful answers.
    Best regards,
    Martin

    Hi Harini,
    thanks for your suggestions.
    1) Clearing the browser cache did not help at all.
    2) We disabled the navigation cache a long time ago. That means navigation is not cached.
    3) We are going to restart the portal server today. I keep you updated.
    Best regards,
    Martin

  • Top level navigation problem anonymous portal

    Hi everybody,
We have an anonymous portal with named anonymous users.
When you log on in the portal with a normal user, the top level navigation works fine and all the content is displayed.
When you log on in the portal with an anonymous user, all the content is displayed, the top level navigation works.
But when you press e.g.: the second tab in the top level navigation, you can see the right content, but the tab is not highlighted. In the normal portal the tab is highlighted. The auth scheme of my top level navigation iview is set to anonymous.
Did I forgot to set a standard sap iview to anonymous or something?
    Kind regards,
    David De Kerpel

    Hi,
You have the following options to solve this problem as suggested by SAP:
    1. Disable the short urls feature. Go to System Administration --> Navigation --> Short URLs, set the "Use short URLs" to false, save the configuration and restart the J2EE Engine.
    2. Log in as a standard user (not anonymous) and navigate to all iViews/pages that will be viewed by anonymous. Navigating to an iView/page or a navigation node means that you can see a link to it in the TLN or DTN.
    3. Deploy the PAR file attached in the SAP Note 913367, which fixes the problem.
    Regards,

  • Keywords Following one of my top level keywords is a mid space dot. Every new keyword is inserted within this keyword. How to I get rid of this?  Chris

I cannot add much to the above question, only say that I have three catalogues and the others do not share this issue.

    Do you mean:
    A) Get rid of the dot?
    or
    B) Get rid of the keyword entirely?

  • Keywording Problems

Some of you may remember my posts about problems in transferring over five years of keywording into Lightroom. It's now done (almost!).
I've been away travelling for three months and have only just got back to finishing it off.
Before going further, I should say that in accordance with my normal practice of only upgrading every other new version - my only way to take practical steps to counter Adobe's innocuous practice of overcharging UK buyers - I'm still using 1.4.
To make a usable Keyword Tags panel, I opted to use non-export top-level keywords and some similar second level. I type these in all caps to distinguish them easily. To make the list accessible and logical, I opted to use the old dodge of leading spaces to force the order. So, my top-level keywords include, for example, [sp]PLACES, [sp]PEOPLE, [sp]OBJECTS & THINGS ([sp]=space).
The reason for the leading spaces is to force the non-exporting keywords to the top of the list, because I will sometimes generate new exportable keywords which will start out at the top level, and will later be moved further into the hierarchy.
The list quickly becomes unusable if the two types are intermixed. Also, if I import images with existing keywords which occur twice or more in my list, LR places a new instance of the word in the top level, because LR doesn't know which of the existing instances to chose.
But I'm finding that I can't get the keywords to identify themselves reliably from the Keywords panel on the right hand side. If I begin to type a word, it correctly offers me a hierarchical option from the existing keywords. But if I accept this by pressing 'enter', LR will create a new top-level keyword without the leading space, and will not use the existing instance of the word. So, for example, I type 'fire' and LR suggests
    "fire > INTANGIBLE THINGS > OBJECTS & THINGS" (note that there are 2 spaces after each >);
I press enter, and end up with a new entry:
"OBJECTS & THINGS>INTANGIBLE THINGS>fire" as well as the existing
    " OBJECTS & THINGS> INTANGIBLE THINGS>fire".
I'm really finding this process annoying in the extreme. I've put in weeks and weeks of work to get to where I am, but the system seems set up to sabotage my best attempts to use it.
Any suggestions? Is there any substantial change to the keywording in LR2 which might make me change my policy?
    Best regards
    Patrick Cunningham

    Patrick-
Since I am at level 1 in my keywording, and you're at the very advanced level- as are many others, who may or may not see this thread, may I suggest you give a quick test of v2? (30 day free trial) on a smallish catalog, but with all your keywords.

  • Problem with Back button in Top Level Navigation

    Hi all,
We are facing a minor problem with the Back button in the Top Level Navigation in Portal. This button is present under the Roles and Worksets menu along with the History, Forward, and Add to Portal Favorites links.
The problem is faced when we have some worksets under a single role. While browsing accross these worksets by randomly clicking on them, we wish to use the Back button as well to go back to the previous workset. But when we use the Back button, the Detailed Navigation panel in the last workset is not retrieved.
I will explain with the System Administration Role. I open the worksets under this role in the following manner:
    First I open Transport;
    Next I open Portal Display;
    Next I open System Configuration;
Now I wish to go back to Portal Display workset by clicking on the Back button. But when I do this, although the Portal Display workset opens up, but I cannot see the Detailed Navigation Panel. See the screenshot below:

Please help me in solving this issue.
    Regards,

I think I have found a resolution, although not very pleasant:

  • Problem with WPC and Top Level Navigation

    Hi all...
I have one problem. I'm using WPC and my role name is shown in Top Level Navigation (TLN).
    For example:
    Role name: Test
navigation nodes: company, About Us, Finnancial, News...
"Test" role is shown on TLN first level and the first level of navigation node is shown on TLN second level.
How can I remove the role name from TLN first level? I already changed the entry point parameter to "No" however this case the navigation node disappear from TLN.
    tks

    Praveen,
How can I set the "No" Entry Point parameter to my navigation nodes??
In my role configuration I only changed the External Connector and Entry Point Parameters.
Where can I set up the No entry point parameter for my navigation nodes?

  • Can't drag keywords to top level in the keyword HUD

After having imported my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, I found the keyword HUD cluttered with all of my 300+ keywords, many of which were duplicated. No idea why that is, but anyway. Some of them now live on top level, some on second floor under the main keyword "iPhoto", some of them are duplicates, some are not. That's the situation.
So I want to (a) drag some of them to first level, (b) build my own hierarchy, and (c) consolidate those duplicates that are alloted on separate levels. Now I find myself in trouble. Technically, I can drag any second level keyword from one to another first level keyword, but then they remain always on second floor. I find no way to move it to *first level* in the HUD.
I know that this can be done when the keyword HUD is almost empty. In that case, I drag it to the bottom of the list, see a white border pop up around the HUD, and let go. Simple. But not when the HUDs filled up to the brim?
    Am I missing something?

OK ... but you're gonna groan. This is, btw, a long-standing bug (but still an excellent question).
Use the search field to search for the keyword you want to move.
Take advantage of the now empty space in the Keyword HUD to move the keyword.
    Clear the search field.
Note that if you set up a well-organized hierarchical keyword list (which seems to be your goal), you can use the other work-around, which is to collapse all levels of the outline.
You might find these remarks on merging duplicates helpful:

    Hi,
We have faced a similar problem earlier, one of the developers changed the property to 0. Luckily for us, one of the user id has got Content Administrator as the first tab, so we could change the iview template and got the TLN. Check this option.
The following is a theoritical idea only, i have not implemented this
Download "com.sap.portal.navigation.toplevel.par.bak" and change the code. Check out this link
    https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/42/fd515a2aa95277e10000000a1553f7/content.htm
You have to change the code as
    levels=2;
    before this line
    if(levels>0)
    { %>
Take a backup of the existing TLN par and upload the edited one with the same name. Then try login and see whether you are able to get the contents, update the property back to 2.
Note : try to upload the necessary jar files in NWDS.
