"Top Sites" capability GONE after upgrading to Safari 4.0.3

In a nutshell:
I've been running Safari 4.X June 09 with Top Sites becoming a key tool in everyday use, and a cool one at that. Top Sites worked on 15 August, did the minor rev upgrade from 4.02 to 4.03 on 16 August, and the Top Sites function is GONE on the 17th.
The rest of the story:
Upgraded to Safari 4.0.3 last night and to my dismay the TOP SITES function is now just GONE. No explanation, no warning, just "poof."
Read through the discussions, read through the support pages, took the immediate advice to reinstall...then tried the instructions for deleting select files under under com.apple.safari...et cetera...No Joy, 2 hours lost.

So Let me get this straight...I accept a minor rev upgrade, from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3, and LOSE functionality? Really, guys?
I lose the functionality, apparently, because the Intel GMA 950 is apparently not Quartz Extreme compatible.
Ok, then, riddle me this Batman: the support article above is dated June 2009. I've been running Safari 4.X since then with top sites working quite well under 4.0.2. My early adopted 2006 Mac Mini hasn't changed since it's manufacture.
What's going on? What am I missing? Anyone else seeing this?

Does your iMac have an Intel GMA 950 chipset? If not, then your comparison is not valid. If it does have the same chipset as my Mac Mini, then you may have eliminated a possibile cause. (same os + same chipset=reasonable assumption)
The central issues is still the loss of major functionality under a minor rev change.
What changed? The requirements for Top Sites to work? Then why did it work for me under 4.0.2? According to the article, Inel GMA 950 is not specifically named as supportable and therefore the function should not have worked at ALL when safari 4.0 was installed. NO Mac specific drivers from Intel at Intel's web site. Have NOT seen any under the apple support pages, but I could be missing them.

I had made a site using the previous version of iWeb (in 10.4) but after I upgraded to 10.5, when I opened iWeb that site was not there. I do have it because I published it to a folder, but how can I get it back into iWeb so I can edit it? Do I have to make it all over again?

All bought titles and albums gone after upgrading I Tunes

Hi Guys,
unfortunately all my recently bought titles and albums from the I Tunes store are gone after upgrading to 10.7.0.21
Can somebody please help me?

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library.
BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I aggree It's rather annoying that you can't remove these features when like me you never use them, however by far the most annoying part of this is that when you go into 'Customize Toolbar' you can actually add yet a second 'Show Top Sites' feature to the toolbar !! Even those people who actually want to use this feature don't require two of them. For crying-out-loud come on Apple, this has to be a joke right?!?

Reading List all changed to Top Site after Upgrade to Safari 7.0.5

Safari was upgraded to 7.0.5 a few days ago. Since then, all items on the Reading List, once click on, bring only the Top Sites.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Safari 5 Top Sites Rearranging Themselves after Quitting

Hello, all.
The thread title sort of says it all. Since upgrading to 10.6.4 and/or Safari 5, my Top Sites will rearrange themselves every time I restart Safari. Specifically, two sites are removed from Top Sites and I have to manually add them again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on fixing it?

Have you tried this:
Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network>TCP/IP.
In the DNS Server window, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites feature, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then repair permissions and restart Safari and see if the problem remains.

Show Top Sites and webpage at same time - Safari 8, Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite and Safari 8 I can't have the Show Top Sites/Reading List sidebar open anymore while I'm surfing the web. Every time I click on the sidebar it go to the Top Sites page. Is there any way to have the sidebar in Safari 8 work like it did in Mavericks where I could keep it open at all times, no matter what page I'm on? I have a 30 inch monitor so screen real estate isn't a problem for me. I'd much rather have all my bookmarks visible to me on the left side of Safari at all times rather than have to click on a folder and open them that way.
I don't want workaround like, "Use the Bookmarks bar." either. I have lots of Bookmarks and many of them are better suited in a folder and the Bookmarks bar hides items in folders, this the problem I am trying to solve.

I have figured out how to do this. I was clicking on the Show Top Sites button located in the Favorites Bar (called the Bookmarks Bar by me earlier) but there's a separate Sidebar button located next to the Back/Forward buttons.

Digital AV Adapter: "Accessory not supported" and "TV Out" settings gone after upgrading iPad 2 to iOS 5.0.1

I've used the digital AV Adapter (bought in Apple Store) nicely on iPad 2 with iOS 4.3.x.
After upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 the TV Out settings have disappeared from the General Settings menu (no matter if adapter is plugged in or not).
I thought that maybe it was time to do a full reset (just in case), so I did that, while the adapter was still plugged in.
When the iPad finished resetting I got a popup message on the lock screen saying:
"This Accessory is Not Supported by iPad"
The adapter sort of works, i.e. there is a picture on my TV, but I cannot control the TV output settings which I could in iOS 4.3.x.
The TV Out settings are completely missing from the General Settings menu (if they were moved in iOS 5.0.1 somewhere else, I could not find them).
The "TV Out" menu item is not there at all.
I cannot select between PAL/NTSC output anymore which is crucial for me as it seems that the iPad current setting is PAL, while I need to be it NTSC, otherwise video drop frames/stutters when played back over a TV.
What I would like to know if there is anybody out there who has iOS 5.0.1 and actually can see the "TV Out" settings under the General Settings (I think it should follow the "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" directly), because no matter what I did I cannot the settings menu to be displayed (I've reset the device, plugged and unplugged the adaptor and HDMI cable multiple times, tried different TVs, etc)
Or, if the settings are in fact, gone by design, then how am I supposed to play 23.976 or 24 FPS media on a 1080p50 TV without stuttering (don't answer that, I know it is impossible, I am just frustrated). This is the first ever device I bought from Apple and I must say I am not that impressed by such turn of events.
I mean, what kind of update removes essential features and makes the officially produced accessory suddenly "not supported"? Did they even test their own official accessory?? Seems not to me.

the settings are gone, i guess. But even worse, I cannot get the iPad2 to play Full HD thru the Apple digital AV adaptor using apps that support (and advertise this), like AVPlayer HD. This definiteley used to work before one of the last iOS upgrades. (I am now at 5.1.1).

After upgrading to Safari 3.1 (Tiger), application crashes on open

I just upgraded to Safari 3.1 on a MacBook Pro (Tiger). The installer prompted me to reboot. After rebooting, clicking on the Safari icon in the dock makes it bounce once, then nothing. The browser doesn't open. The console reports the following:

I verified that the "WebKit" file is in the correct location and was updated when I ran the 3.1 installer.
What to do?

Your system sounds like it needs some badly needed servicing.
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
And the update/s you performed may well have revealed pre-existing faults with your setup.

Complete library is gone after upgrade to 9.0.2

My complete library is gone after an upgrade to 9.0.2, however, the files are still on my external hardrive. Do I have to manually drop & drag each file to restore to iTunes? Is there an easier way to restore?
