Top Sites Refresh...

Safari 4: Top sites
My wife keeps "top sites" as her home page and it seems that it has taken on a new feature. Not sure why but when she starts Safari, the top sites fill in the images and then one by one they fade are replaced by the gray Safari image. This is a consistent behavior. After reading a couple of posts that looked somewhat related, I tried deleting the TopSites.plist and the com.apple.Safari.plist file and it's still the same behavior. Also, if I pin one of the sites in "edit" it doesn't seem to remember that setting either.
I ran repair disk permissions the other day and nothing too bad showed up. Any other thoughts on where to head?
TIA

Based on your description, it sounds like she's trying to launch Safari from the Top Sites list somewhere on her Desktop, and you can't do that. You must launch Safari from the Safari icon on the Dock or in the /Applications folder.
Don't go around deleting things when you don't know what they are for or what the effect will be; you'll just create more problems for yourself.
In the meantime, try this:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the problem continues.

  • Top Sites Refresh? Safari Yosemite

Is anyone else having an issue with the Top Sites not refreshing on Safari? v8
You used to be able to do a "force" update by hitting command-R, but that no longer seems to work?
    Any help is appreciated.

Many people are complaining about this, including me. To get this problem solved we need to all send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Top Sites continuously blank and refresh

I like and use Top Sites but it has become unsuable with this constant blacking out and reloading the thumbnails.  My MBP has not seen a problem at all.
I have been searching every other day for over a month trying to find a fix in Windows Safari with no joy.  I want to resolve, not switch browsers. Please offer up a solution that only refreshes the Top Site thumbnails once a day or as some controlable interval.  Started about two versions ago, now on ver 5.1.5. Windows 7 64bit.

I haven't seen a workaround for this one yet. Not a short term solution, but perhaps try reporting the issue to Apple via the safari product feedback form:

  • Unable to refresh top site previews in Safari 8

Just started using Safari 8.0 on OS 10 Yosemite as Chrome is not stable.   Trying to get Top Sites page working well but cannot get preview images to refresh.  All my top sites reflect login pages i.e. Facebook login page.  Searching for answer turns up doing PAGE REFRESH as a solution to his issue.  However there is no refresh button on the Top Sites page (as no site is loaded)  - using Command - R also does nothing.

    Hi!
Is this (Re: Top site doesn't work. Safari 8.0) the same problem? If it is, try what I mentioned there. I hope it helps.

Is there any way to get them to refresh?

  • HowTo: Refresh Top Site Page Icon (non-RSS)

I like Top Sites. I have four Google Sites pages that I used and Top Sites is a quick way to navigate between them. However, the Sites pages require a login and now all the icons in Top Sites for the Google Sites pages appear as the login page for Google Sites instead of the different Google Sites pages. This is annoying as I can't always remember which of the four Google Sites pages is which.
How do I refresh the cache that Top Sites has or force it to refresh its cache?

    HI,
This is annoying as I can't always remember which of the four Google Sites pages is which.
For Google, you would be better off using Bookmarks instead.
Navigate to all four Google pages. From your Safari menu bar click Bookmarks, name them Google 1, 2, 3, and 4 individually. (Or however you wish to name the pages to keep them separate). Save to your Bookmarks Bar.
That's much easier then using TopSites for Google pages.

  • List View webpart from subsite to Top site shows random error "List Does not exist"

    Hi All,
We have a list in subsite and we are creating a view for that list which we are showing in one of the top site home page. We have taken care of changing the web and list guid of list view webpart when we added on top site. Its working fine but some time
shows error "list does not exist" but when we refresh the error goes. Is it known issue or if there is any workaround for this? because we cannot go live with this random error.

  • Safari Top Sites thumbnail images not updating automatically?

is it happening just with me, or the automatic update of the Top Sites thumbnail images is not working anymore?

It is intentional. When on the Top Sites view, hit Command+R to refresh the images. Supposedly this was done because the previews don't do a good enough job of detecting weird login pages and wifi password pages.
Personally, I'd like it to have an option to go back to updating the images on its own again.

  • Safari 4.0.3 Top Sites and/or flash choke and I have to force quit.

I've tried multiple times all of the remedies I've seen on the discussion forums. Uninstalled an reinstalled flash. Dumped old internet plugins, reset, repair permissions, restart, trashed most safari folders, etc...in many different orders that have been recommended.
1- When I use Safari 4.0.3 Top Sites to go to some sites there is a frozen beach ball at about the time that the site is loading the advertising. This is predictable on sites with advertising. I have to force quit Safari. Then open it up again and back to normal. This is the usual procedure.
Sometimes the usual problem sites come up without a problem but that is very rare.
There is never a problem opening the sites using a saved bookmark.
I'm guessing that it's a page refresh/update problem withing Top Sites. Is it that it can't handle updating the animated ads when opening from Top Sites? Just looking for a solution.
Turning off Top Sites is not an answer. Avoiding using it is not an answer. I like the feature and want to continue to use it without problems.
2 - Rarely I've also had to force quit sometimes when clicking on a link on a page with advertising. It's as though I caught it (flash?) in some part of its cycle and it was off guard.
So, is it top sites, flash, scripting? I'd really like safari to work as it used to.

If turning that off improved the situation, this confirms that one of Safari's database files has become corrupt and is causing the crashing, and this would show up in your crash log as Thread 3 having crashed.
The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari 3.2, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
In other words it is part of Safari's (version 3.2 onwards) anti-phishing security feature.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db (although that location may be different on your system).
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

  • Why does Top Sites reject a specific URL addition

I have bumped into a specific URL that cannot be added to Top Sites graphically, from Bookmarks or from any source I tried using a drag, yet can be added by using the Bookmarks/Add Bookmark/"where to keep it" pull-down.
The amount of time I just wasted learning this empirically was insulting, maybe an hour to tie up the loose ends. In the end, I can march down my Bookmarks testing every link and some can be added while some can't, nothing to do with the specific link I started with.
Is there a guideline anywhere specifying what types of URL's have this problem (feature?), and more generally why the method used to add an URL could possibly have anything to do with anything? Anything along the lines of WHY would be refreshing as I haven't found any info on this issue on the WWW.
Trying to leapfrog the obvious questions; yes, I've done it before, and yes, BannedURL STrings was cleared and relaunched from TopSites.plist.
I also wouldn't mind knowing why such an obvious affordance like an "X" bans a URL instead of simply deleting the Top Site from the list in "Edit" mode, but that's a whole 'nuther topic.

I'm going to call my own question answered because I believe I understand, but I don't want to spend more time proving it.
It would appear, simply, that similar pages in question don't behave similarly. As a browser there's nothing I can do about it so I failed in generalizing. There's obviously an HTML code feature that is not implemented evenly by those coding stereotypically similar pages, relating to saving or caching. Meh.

  • IMac screen flashes black and white when returning to top sites or screen saver

iMac screen flash black and white when returning to top sites or before sleep...any ideas why?

    Howdy OatsaMae,
It sounds like your screen is flashing unexpectedly on you for some reason. I would recommend this section from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • How to change a thumbnail in Top Sites

    (Using  Safari 7)
I know I can drag a URL to the Top Sites page to add it, but invaribly it does not add the thumbnail I want.  A good example of this is the Google Calendar.  If I have the calendar open and drag the URL to Top Sites I get a thumbnail of the Google login page, which doesn't accurately depict the content.  This used to happen with Facebook, but mysteriously that finally changed to an actual Facebook page thumbnail.  This was never a problem with previous versions of Safari, so wondering if there's a way to force a page thumbnail onto the Top Sites page in Safari 7. Thanks for any help.

I understand. You could try deleting the cache database ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
