Top utility installation in Solaris 10
Hello I've a SB 150 with Solaris 10 loaded. I tried to install top utility using pkgadd command and it showed that the package was added successfully. Following is the package name that I installed:
top-3.5.1-sol25-sparc-local
After this I have rebooted the server also. But when I type top in the terminal it gives the following output:
bash-3.00# top
bash: top: command not foundMy question is any further steps required to configure this utility.
Thanking you all in advance.
Thanks and Regards
Britto Sidhan
any just for the sake of it, i've never seen a problem in Solaris that was solved by rebooting the server, futher more the name you posted indicates that you installed a version of top which was configured for Solaris 2.5.
Even though a Solaris 2.5 top should work under Solaris 10, it might be advisable to find a more recent top, if not else Solaris 10/SPARC is 64 bit and 2.5 was only 32 bits, and its also a much much much more advanced OS than 2.5 was.

Hi. Just trying to work my way through installing solaris 10. Never used solaris, unix or linux so please excuse my ignorance.
When I boot from my dvd drive I am getting "not a ufs file system" message. I usually run xp however even when I have an unformatted and unpartitioned drive in I get this message.
Does the solaris 10 system allow partitioning upon installation? when I go to the appropriatemanuals it says to use the configuration utility. Then it says to get the configuration utility from the solaris installation dvd. FINE I say.
Then in order to put this on a floppy drive I am supposed to be running volume manager. all the instructions seem to assume that you have an installed bootable unix system.
How is this done?
Is there an easier way? If so what?
Thanks in advance.
Tim CMy guess is that you only have NTFS partition on your hard disk, and no free space or any other partitions. Right?
Of course, Solaris allows safe partition upon installation, as long as you have either: (1) free space = unpartitioned space. (2) Solaris-recognizable partitions (FAT32, Linux, and Solaris, not NTFS unfortunately).
However, if you proceed with installation with NTFS on the whole hard disk, you will have to over-write the NTFS with Solaris partition, and which in turn means you say "bye bye" to your current Windows.
By the way, you have to install both x86 boot and Solaris parition too. It takes very small space for x86, and the rest is for Solaris. -
How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10
How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10
Hi Java Specialist,
I am trying to setup a network interface with the following steps on a new fresh Solaris 10 installation using the instruction titled How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10 3/05 ONLY from http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/816-4554/esxhb/index.html:
1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb up
2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment prior to installing Solaris
10 on top of it.
3. # Added saturn to /etc/hostname.lo0.
4. # Added 10.56.8.101 to /etc/inet/hosts
5. # Added 10.56.0.0 255.255.240.0 to /etc/inet/netmasks
6.# reboot
However, the following errors kept recurring:
svcs –xv …. unable to qualify my own domain name,
failed with exit status 69.
Any idea on what other steps have I missed? I was hoping to only do step 3 – 6 for the change to apply permanently.
Many thanks,
JackHi Java Specialist,... in a Solaris forum?
1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb upThe loopback connection (your lo0)is NOT a physical interface. There are no hardware components for it. Nor can I think of any reason why it should ever be anything other than the default 127.0.0.1
Use your favorite Internet search site (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo) to learn more about it.
2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment ...I have no idea how a nonexistent software construct gets a DHCP address in a MS Operating System, unless you are confusing this with the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" which is an utterly different concept. Again, go see what Google tells you.
<br>
<br>
<br>
... completely unrelated to configuring an IP...
unable to qualify my own domain nameAgain, search the Internet or even search these forums with that string of words.
Go back through your two most recent posts and read the responses again.
They seem to both be on the same topic as this new one -- configuring an IP on something.
How to initialize new IP address on secondary interface permanently
How to change IP address permanently on Solaris 10
When you've done all that, then come back and tell us what you are actually trying to do. -

2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
- A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
- Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
- ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
- In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

Installation error Solaris 10-u6-ga1
I must be missing something really obvious on the installation of Solaris 10 U6. I've come up against the error message upon manually partitioning, and using UFS. After the install the error is:
Solaris 10 10 software installation partially failed
Solaris 10 packages partially installed
SUNWlur
Then at reboot it loops and loops
If I install using ZFS no problem. Unfortunately I have to use UFS for this install.
I pulled down the sol-10-u6-x86-ga1 dvd and installed on an Vmware to see what I'd get. If I manually setup the drive, it fails to with the same error.
Here is my drive layout both sparc server and vmware(x86)
/ = 10 Gb
swap = 10 Gb
/etc = 10 Gb
/usr = 10 Gb
/var = 10 Gb
/export=remaining drive space.
I'm I missing something obvious?
thanks
billThere should be more information in the install log about why the one package failed. If you search for the package name in the log you should be able find it. Then that might help determine whether the package can be installed on its own, possibly fixing your reboot issue.

Why do my applications hang (Mail, Disk Utility, Installer, Safari)
After the latest software update. Mail, Safari, Disk Utility, Installer, Activity monitor and some more applications do nothing more than jumping in the Dock and then hang-up with the spinning wheel always spinning... I think it was after the 2006-003 security update, or maybe the ITunes update....I'just don't know anymore...
I have tried to downgrade to the 10.3.7 combo update but the installer App behaves just the same... If it wasn't for Fire fox I wouln't be writing here.
During my search on these forums I have found a thread that stated that the latest ITunes update was responsible, I downgraded it to 6.0.1, and it worked until I restarted my mac... Then it didn't work anymore, all my Apple apps are not opening.
I really need some help with this...
The wierd thing is that all other (non-Apple) programs run just fine, like the whole Adobe CS and Macromedia Packages.
If anyone has a solution, please be so kind to let me know.
Thanks allTry this and see if it works for you.

kmosx: Apps unexpectedly quit
Posted: Dec 19, 2004 8:11 AM
Here are some possible reasons for this problem.
1. Recent Update: Download and reapply the most recent Combo Update: Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo
2. Font duplicates: Please read the articles by Kurt Lang and J.Otava here: Kurt Lang: Font Management in OS X Panther and J.Otava: Fonts & Apple Type Services
3. Corrupted preferences:
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
- com.apple.ATS.plist
- com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
4. Permissions:
Symptoms:
a. Only Apple applications affected
b. Also happens when you switch to a new user.
c. First appeared after update to 10.3.4, 10.3.5 or 10.3.6
This usually happens if you do not repair permissions before you update to 10.3.4 or later. There are (unconfirmed) hints that corrupted cache files might also contribute to this problem. You can clean caches with programs like Cocktail or Panther Cache Cleaner. The only solution I am aware of is to do an Archive&Install.
You also might want to read this article: Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
If none of the above solves the problem you might have to do an Archive&Install:
1. Insert the Install CD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key
2. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
3. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
4. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
5. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
6. Install Panther
7. Restart
8. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
9. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and install it.
10. Restart and repair permisssions
11. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
12. Install all missing updates and restart.
13. Repair permissions

Does "top" command work in Solaris?
Does "top" command work in solaris?
# uname -a
SunOS rac1 5.10 Generic_120012-14 i86pc i386 i86pc
# top
top: not found
Edited by: user11936985 on Aug 29, 2011 8:44 AMTop has two sections, the summary information at the top of the screen which gives load averages, process counts, etc. and a bottom section which lists the "top processes". The prstat command standard report is similar to the bottom section of top. So if that is what you need, then prstat is an adequate substitute. It doesn't report the information in top's summary section. On the other hand, prstat is actually a much more powerful tool than top, especially is you use some of the other options. For example, "prstat -a" gives you the "top process" report plus a summary report of usage by user. If you use "prstat -J" you get a top process report with a summary by project and "prstat -Z" gives a top process report with a summary by zone. You can use options like -v or -m to get more information on each process in the "top process" section. There are other options mentioned in the manual page.
Top works and works well on Solaris. You can get a copy form sunfreeware and probably other sources as well. It doesn't come from Oracle with Solaris 10 (but does come with Solaris 11). If you're a Linux shop you might want it because it is familiar. However, you may want to look at prstat as well because it can provide some useful information that top does not. -

Need Agent Installer for Solaris (SPARC)
Hi All,
I have downloaded Grid Control Agent Installer for Solaris from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/agentsoft.html.
When I tried to extract the zip file, I am getting the following error message.
"Can not open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."
Even I tried using http://sac.us.oracle.com/download/index.html also but getting the same error.
Please send me the location if you have,
Thanks
SumathiMost commands are identical. Performance analysis, loading all are similar. Tape interaction, creation of tape devices is going to be pretty much the same.
The differences show up a lot at the hardware level. HBAs aren't usually the same, many drivers (and their quirks) are different between the architectures. If you're debugging connectivity to a tape library, those differences may be critical.
So you can't get as close as you may want, but I'll bet it would still be helpful.

11gR2 installation on Solaris failed with prereuisite 124861-15
The 11gR2 installation on Solaris 10 sparc failed with prereuisite 124861-15.
When I tried to install the patch 124861-20, it failed with the following(see below):
I have Sun Studio 12-2 installed on the system.
It was complaining that some packages (SPROmrcom, SPROlangx, SPROlang,SPROsunms ) are not installed.
Where can I get these packages? Should not it be included in the Sun Studio 12-2 installation?
Thanks.
Zhigang
