Topcase & Keyboard versions

I'm watching eBay for a few decently priced top cases (yes, mine has the nice cracks on the edge) and keyboards but one thing seems to be amazingly rampant...several auction listings show version 1 keyboard images for items listed as version 2 and vice versa. The sellers have been less than stellar (read: not even answering) about helping me with my queries about this.
As I understand the differences:
Version 1 has the open apple symbol on the command key and the F keys have brightness, volume, numlock, external monitor, and then keys usually left used by Expose by default even though they do not have any symbol on them.
Version 2 has no open apple symbol and the word "command" on the command key (in keeping with the theme of the other modifier keys which have their names printed on their respective keys...makes sense). The F keys are completely different...sort of. F1 and F2 still affect screen brightness, but F3-F5 no longer do volume (swapped over to the right side of the row) and now there appear to be media playback keys in the middle of the row and a couple other functions I can't yet figure out. Also the numlock is apparently gone and the keys representing the number keypad are no longer numbered.
That all aside, if I get a version 2 keyboard and replace my version 1 keyboard with it, will there be any issues? I ask because I'm not entirely certain I'll get a version 1 keyboard even though the listings say the auctions are for a version 1 keyboard. Also, are there any differences between keyboards found on CD and C2D MacBooks? There are several part numbers listed among all of the auctions and I want to be sure I get the right one...if it even really matters.
Yes, it also appears that many people have successfully gotten their cracked topcases replaced by Apple (even out of warranty), but unless an Apple store will do it on site rather than ship my MacBook out for a couple weeks, I won't even bother with the thought. Seems like a pretty easy repair only requiring unscrewing a heap of screws and then unplugging the keyboard/trackpad connector from the motherboard (via iFixIt.com's guide).

Ok...so not even anyone on this board will give me an answer? Yikes.

I bought a Macbook Unibody back in 2010, and until now the system is still working perfectly fine, probably because I keep on updating my software version, currently I am on Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)...I don't have issues with it.
I bought this Macbook in Japan, the keyboard version is on Japanese (with US alphabets) becaue I was studying Kanji back then, and apparently I am now living here in the Philippines and some of my keyboard keys are lost and they were taken off by my naughty niece (LOL, couldn't blame her though... she's just 2 years old)... now I am looking for a replacement. I couldn't find Japanese version of Top Case replacements here in Manila... now I kinda realized I might as well use a US version moving forward.
Now my question is re: Top Case keyboard replacement for Macbook Unibody A1342 (US version), would it be compatible w/my Macbook if originally it had a Japanese version?

Replacing Topcase - wich one to buy?

I need a new topcase for my macbook bought in October 2006.
I've allready bought one on wich some keys don't work (backspace, the 4 punctuation keys right down, and the F12 one). Then i've noticed connector wasn't the same gold instead of Silver currently on my MB.. So I think i've probably made a mistake in the compatibility of this topcase with my MB model..
Have i right? and so if i buy no matter wich one with a silver connector will it be definitely working with my MB or have to check my serial number with the topcase's one..?
Someone can get me one but i don't know wich one i have to get..

When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
and the primary language is set to Japanese.
But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.

This bug also affects the Canadian English settings. If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard. Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times. The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

When I connect to the listed remotes the client sets the keyboard layout to Latvian which is a completely different layout than Hungarian (not even close...).
- On Windows 8 if I set the language on the login screen it stays on that language after the login.
- On Windows Server 2003R2 and 2008R2 even if I set the language at login it will switch back to LV after the login.

I get a full keyboard instead of numbers when I log in. Help!

I went to log into my ipad, and instead of a number pad I got a full keyboard instead. No matter what I try, I can't get into my ipad now. It won't take my password. Does anyone know what to do?

tried that... it doesn't work. It takes me back to the full keyboard version of numbers instead of the pad, and doesn't take my password. I just tried to reset from itunes and its reloading the software. I'll see how that goes. Thanks, though!

no Swype, no basic keyboard...in Settings: no keyboards installed, no active text input, nothing to choose from...
I tried to re-install immediately, no PR1.2 on NSU or yet...

can you please provide more info about your configuration? It would be useful to have quick voice input keyboard version, harmattan version (pr.10, pr.1, pr1.2 - you can find it in Settings->Info), language and regional settings, other input methods installed and everything you think could make your phone different from others. Yours is the very first (and until now unique) bug report for the v0.1.7 and it would help a lot to have as many info as possible to fix your issue.

MSI Keyboard Issiue

Hello.
I own an MSI GT70 0ND ( MS-1762 ) laptop and after some time i wanted to change my keyboard.
I bought a new one and it turned out that it don't work. I mean that if i press a key the system input is diffrent for every key i have pressed.
After some research i found out that my laptop uses a windows 7 keyboard layout and the new one that i bought have a windows 8 layout.
I also found that between the two keyboard versions the scancodes have been changed, this explain why they input is diffrent.
If i am not wrong the new keyboard i have is compatible only with the MS-1763 versions and since myne is MS-1762 it dont work.
Is it possible in some way to make this keyboard work correctly on my latop?

just to update this topic with final info :
Yes it wasn't easy, i was able to patch the EC-FW in my workshop area with private (non official) modification
to fix this entire messed up keyboard and to make this different keyboard type to work correctly in this NB
so no need to buy another keyboard

Hi I am having exactly the same problem since starting a new job where they are running all CC Adobe products, I'm working the same way as I always have using keyboard shortcuts to swap tools and I either get the menus opening or sometimes the tool reverting to the previous tool (often when resizing the brush) it's driving me crazy and this post is the first thing I have found so far where anyone else mentions it!

With the standard keyboard version of BB phone simply pressing Alt+RightShift+Del all at the same time will force the phone to do a re-boot. Back in the days of PC-DOS pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del accomplished the re-boot.
With the new BB10 touch screen phone, I would be curious to know how the re-boot can be manually done...???

Brand new mbp 15" i7 thunderbolt with erroneus keyboard

I heve bought a brand new macbook pro 15" and when I have opened the case I'm ver y surprised because the keyboard it's not the spanish versión that I wanted, it's english keyboard. I have bought in PC CITY, and it's not a customised computer. The Apple stick saya clearly in the box side "ESP" for spanish keyboard version. When I have seen this I have called to Apple, and they have offered me a keyboard changing, but not a computer changing. It's this normal from a premium brand -the best for me- ? Should I open the next time the box to see that all it's ok before to pay the NeXT Apple computer? PC CITY has closed all shops in my country, and they only offer me return the Mac and return me the money, but I don't like this because I have bought the macbook with a 25% price.
Have you have this problema any time? Should I accept change only the keyboard waiting x days, and sending the Mac to a repair shop? It's this politically correct? I think Sjobs don't like this.

I would let them exchange the keyboard. It's not that big of deal. If your logic board was bad, that's a different story, I would get my money back.That KB is easy to switch and just plugs in. You should be fine.

Late 2006 MacBook Pro replacement keyboard: firmware update required?

My late-2006 2.33GhZ MacBook Pro is still going strong -- except that a group of keys on the internal keyboard stopped working two weeks ago, requiring me to replace it. It was a delicate operation, but it worked like a charm.
Shortly thereafter, though, I started noticing a symptom that jogged my memory: when I'd go to type something, quite often the first character would be dropped, as if the keyboard wasn't waking from its low-power state quickly enough. This had been a common complaint with this model, and Apple addressed it with the MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update released in 2008. I recall installing it and very specifically noticing the problem had vanished.
So of course now I'm wondering: is it possible my new keyboard needs the firmware update too? You can see the catch-22 I'm in: I can't install it, since the computer is convinced the updater has already been run. when I do run it, I get a generic message that the update isn't necessary. I even tried removing:
/Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.BuiltInKybdFirmwareUpdate.bom
to see if that would enable the updater to run, but no dice.
Of course it's possible I'm simply losing my mind, and the keyboard already has the update. Could someone else with this exact model -- someone who has run the keyboard firmware update -- tell me what version their internal keyboard is at, based on:
System Profiler -> Hardware -> USB -> Apple Internal Keyboard

Any resolution to this? I do not have the exact same MacBook - mine is a 17" MacBook Pro, but in case it helps you, my updated keyboard version is 0.18 using the same installer
My problem is that when I originally used that software update (over a year ago), it created an intermittent keyboard/trackpad failure. Every 2 days, on a very regular basis, my trackpad and keyboard fail. In order to fix the problem, I go to the Utilities folder and run the "Built-In Keyboard Update Firmware" that the original DMG installer installed there. Once I run that program I'm good for another 2 days. Apple, of course, has no clue to what's going on.
Why am I telling you all this? I noticed that you are running Snow Leopard. I tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago. After the Snow Leopard install, my keyboard failed like clockwork; however, it turns out that the firmware installer that I have been relying on for the last year to fix my intermittent failures no longer works under Snow Leopard. My phone calls to Apple were a complete waste of time (apparently there is a very low threshold to get on the "Genius Bar"). One of my questions to them was specifically about a way to re-run the installer from the DMG file. They again had no clue, and In the end I had to downgrade to Leopard to get my Keyboard back.
All that said to let you know that even if you can find a way to re-install the firmware updater (I'd like to know how, if you figure it out), there is a good chance the actual firmware update won't install under Snow Leopard.

Discolouration solved?

I bought a white 2GHz MacBook soon after they were released (produced during the 20th week) and it soon developed the yellow discolouration of the track pad button and palm rest area. I waited until Apple acknowledge the problem and provided a solution before calling Apple Care. Apple agreed to have it repaired so I took it to a local Apple retail store for service. As it was only a cosmetic issue (although a definite defect) I brought it in once I got a call that the parts had arrived.
It appears that Apple is using a new part for the top case (including the keyboard, track pad, button) and bezel (the frame around the display that includes the MacBook name). Specifically the parts listed on the repair sheet are:

885909137527 Bezel, Display, Version 2
On first impression, the plastic of the new parts definitely appears to be different than the original. The fit is also better than the original parts I received. My machine arrived with slight tool marks on the top case palm rest area and the original parts appeared to suffer from poor injection molding. On the original parts the narrow region between the track pad button and the latch indent was warped such that it would rub against the track pad button and make for inconsistent resistance. Some clicks would take extra pressure to register. The original bezel also appeared to be looser: I could press around the face of the bezel to make a better fit but it would still be loose in a few spots. The new bezel is tight with no play in the fit. The new top case has an even clearance around the track pad button. Time will tell if the new plastic is less porous than the previous parts but so far it does look better.
I've dealt with Apple Care a few times in the past and have been consistently impressed with the service I received. Although the parts took a bit longer to arrive this time (no big deal to me as the machine was still usable), it took less than 6 hours from the time I dropped off my machine until it was ready for pick-up! Much better than the possible 3-5 days. All told I've been very pleased with this machine. Thanks Apple for acknowledging the problem and attempting a fix (only time will tell if the new plastic is as durable and cleanable as the iBook).

i just took my macbook in also, for discoloration. they replaced the keyboard and topcase, but not the screen bezel. which is fine because my screen bezel wasn't discoloring.
i agree, apple service at the store i bought it in was so easy and hassle-free! i got mine back 2 hours after i gave it to them. luckily they had the part on hand.
you're right, it is a different kind of plastic. it feels "harder" and less porous than the old one. getting a new keyboard was a plus for me.. my old keyboard's down-arrow key was really buggy. it didn't register unless i pushed it pretty hard. on the new keyboard, it seems the keys are slightly higher and have more travel than the old one.
all in all, i'm impressed with apple service. (this is my first mac, but i'm sure not my last!)

Long Load Times on Graphic Intensive Games

I'm experiencing some absurdly long load times (1-3 hours) with many games (SPORE, Portal, X:3, etc...) that I believe may be related to how graphically intensive they are. Older games with lower graphics quality (WoW, Civ 4, etc...) load up fine.
When I load any newer game the icon appears in the tray and the computer does nothing else for at least an hour, whereupon the program loads and begins playing immediately--often without any further delays or issues.
I also use Boot Camp to run Windows Vista (Ultimate 32) and experience no delays when running SPORE on Windows.
