Topics not opening.
Hello All!
I am compiling my RH8 project using WebHelp.
For simplicity sake, let's say my start page is TEST.htm and my default page is WELCOME.htm.
In my single source layout:
My navigation pane preferred format is DHTML/pure HTML.
My server name is VMHOST, connection protocol is FTP and server directory is /TEST_WebHelp.
I have Republish All selected.
My IT dept configured the VMHOST server to act as an FTP Server. (not sure if I'm using the correct terminology for that.) If I look at the list of folders on the server, I can see my TEST_WebHelp folder under Internet Explorer>VMHOST (VMHOST has a special icon and when properties is opened, the dialog box title is FTP Properties and type = FTP Server, Location = ftp://vmhost/.)
My project is being generated and published without error messages. After generation, when I open/view the project from RH it works like a charm.
But when I try to open it from Explorer (IE8) it is not working like a charm...I see my skin with all the buttons, I see my Contents, my Index, Search etc, but my default topic is not opening and the topics are not appearing when I check on a topic in Contents or click an Index, search for a word, click Home, and so forth.
Here's what I am typing into the address to open my project: ftp://vmhost/TEST_WebHelp/TEST.htm#Welcome.htm
If I type in the address ftp://vmhost/ I see my Directory SSV_WebHelp listed and if I double-click on the directory I see the entire list of files from the project.
This seems like it should be a simple problem that I'm just not solving due to inexperience on my part. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thanks!
Deb
Hi Deb
If you click Tools > Options > General tab and choose "Convert RoboHelp edited topics to HTML", then re-generate and re-publish, does anything change?
As an aside, once things are working, you probably don't want to leave that option to republish all selected. It will slow the process considerably in the future.
Cheers... Rick

Webhelp topic not opening in Safari directly
In an application that runs in Safari and has Webhelp, when you click the app's Help button from a page (.NET) in the app, the page's help topic should open. Instead, the help's TOC page opens instead. Help is developed in RoboHelp x5.
Is some change required in the Webhelp files? Our Mac users aren't happy.
ThxYou would have to ask Adobe that question, this is essentially a user to user forum.
Give us the link to where you downloaded the whproxy.js file and maybe we can see if that has been fixed some other way.

RHS9 & RH8/Clicking links to topics more than 3 "deep" in the TOC does not open the TOC
Our IT department recently purchased and installed RoboHelp Server 9. I am publishing two RoboHelp 8 projects to the server using WebHelp Pro output. When I view the projects, I am able to navigate the table of contents without issues, but if I click on a link in a topic that links to another topic that is 3 or more "deep" in the table of contents, the topic will display in the main window but not open its location in the TOC. I am able to navigate the topic in the TOC myself and view it without a problem.
The behavior we expect when clicking on a link to a topic that has an entry in the TOC is that the TOC will open and highlight the topic as well as open it in the main window. We need this functionality because we use a "recent updates" page and would like our staff to see where a topic is located in the TOC after they click the link to the topic.
This behavior does not occur with items two levels deep in the TOC or with our current WebHelp output. Using our smaller, 600 topic project, we tried removing all TOC books except for one that went 3 levels deep and then tried to duplicate the behavior - but it worked fine. So, we suspect that it is an issue with RoboHelp Server and the number of topics/TOC entries we have. (Roughly 600 in one project and 1500 in another)
We have attempted the Adobe fix described here: http://helpx.adobe.com/robohelp/kb/books-topics-missing-toc-webhelp.html which results in the same behavior, as well as some new behavior when attempting to access items 3 or more deep in the TOC - the message, "Loading, click here to cancel..." displays and the topic will not load. (Similar to this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4116269#4116269) We've since reinstalled the server, republished the projects and we're back to square one.
Any thoughts on this behavior? We're at a loss at this point.Hi there
Often, when this issue arises with regular WebHelp, I will advise the following change. Perhaps it will help with WebHelp Pro, I'm not sure. But it's worth trying to see.
In the Single Source Layout properties for WebHelp, look in the Navigation section and change the Speed Optimization.
I just checked my WebHelp Pro and really don't see anything similar that jumps out at me for this setting, so I'm guessing the suggestions in that link are possibly a way of doing that.
Cheers... Rick

Simplified Chinese in RH9 topics will not open in RH9 Editor
I upgraded a RH8 project with a simplified chinese character set to RH9 and the topics will not open in the RH editor. See screen shot below.
After clicking off on the error dialog, the topic opens in noptepad showing the HTML. This occurs on every topic in the project. I also had one of my collegues test the upgrade on their machine and same result occrred. I am not sure if there is anything in the project I can troubleshoot or what else to try. Checking any topic properties/general tab, I noticed the edtitor field is hard coded to use Notepad. I do not know why this would be unless RH9 is confused about how to process the character set .
This problem did not occur in RH8 with simplified Chinese character sets. I am going to submit a bug report to Adobe but if anyone has any knowldge or experience uin this area, please advise.
Thanks,Hi there
Try this. Click Tools > Options... > File Association.
Configure "Use Default Editor" as shown below.

Double-clicking topic checks it out and does not open
Hi all,
I'm experiencing a strange, vexing problem with both of our source-controlled help projects that no one else on my team is experiencing. This appears to be a problem with my computer/installation of RoboHelp.
Today, I went into our help projects for the first time in a couple of days, and when I double-clicked any topic, it automatically checked it out of VSS but did not open it. It also checked out the CSS file, template (master page) file, and any graphic files associated with the topic.
Normally, when I double-click a topic, the topic opens, and it only checks it out of VSS if I start typing in the topic. It does not check out the CSS, master page file, or graphic files unless I make changes to those files.
Like I said, no one else is experiencing this problem. We all have the same system versions (see below). It appears to be only me, and it's happening with both of our help projects. To my knowledge, I did not do anything to my computer or its application settings to cause this. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? If so, what can I do to fix it? Any other ideas?
My system information:
RoboHelp HTML version 8.0.2.208
Output type: WebHelp
Source control: Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 8.0.50727.42
Thank you in advance for any assistance,
LisaHi Lisa
That actually makes total logical sense to me. Here's why.
Each PC running the Microsoft Windows operating system has a database we all know as the Registry. Inside that registry are entries that govern the behavior of Windows. Consider the Registry to be similar to DNA. The DNA is different for every human, right? The same really holds true with Windows. Some might argue that this cannot be, because if you had the same setup it would be the same. But each copy of Windows has a different user and more specifically, a different serial number.
Okay, in this registry database is an area known as file associations. So Windows keeps track of which applications should open when files are double-clicked.
RoboHelp has a similar feature that is governed from the dialog you were in. But it also works in concert with Windows. So who really knows why sometimes it does the things it does. I understand that RoboHelp determines the editor by meta tags found in the HTML of the topics.
I do know that as part of any RoboHelp training class I facilitate, I regularly lead folks to this area and configure to the "Use Default" as an early step. I do this because if you import a Word document into the project and you leave Auto-select enabled, Word opens when you attempt to double click topics in the RoboHelp editor.
Happy to have been of some small help... Rick

When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6. Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere. After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c:\ drive of the computer. In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C:\ drive. Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
To get around this issue I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C:\ drive. Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file. To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users\<your logged in username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.
Photoshop and bridge should now start up with no issues.
I hope that this can help others out there as this caused me a great deal of frustration when upgrading to CS6.station_two wrote:
OK, here comes the explanation of what the scratch disk does and why it's optimal to have it on a physically separate internal drive (not partition!) other than your boot drive
I probably shouldn't say anything since it could complicate this thread, but the rules of thumb can be different under special circumstances when SSD is involved.
IF you have a LOT of empty space on your SSD-based system drive, then Photoshop can actually work great with it's scratch setting pointed at the system drive. This is because a) SSD transfers are much faster than spinning hard drives and b) there's no seek time, so simultaneous transfers to/from scratch and swap files aren't devastating to performance, and you can see a net gain because of the increased I/O throughput over what's possible using a separate spinning drive for scratch.
But if you don't have a huge amount of free space (hundreds of GB) on the system SSD, it's definitely better to use a separate drive, as station_two has said.
Also, up to about a year or so ago, you had to try to severely limit write activity to your SSD drive, since you could actually wear them out by repeated high data write activity. That's pretty much a non-issue now with the advent of things like the SandForce in-drive controller that does wear-leveling inside the drive. Modern drives will last 10 years or more in normal typical use, without special consideration.
As it turns out, making a RAID array of SSDs is a great way to boost performance across the board, have bunches of free space, and ensure even the heaviest usage doesn't shorten the drive life. I have done so, creating a 2 TB system drive C: made from 4 SSDs and Photoshop's swap file (and pretty much everything else) pointed to C:. This system flies, and I can barely tell when Photoshop and/or Windows "goes virtual" and starts using its scratch/swap files heavily. I don't even notice Photoshop auto-saves.
Sorry for the SSD diversion.
Back on topic:
Pretty much everyone who's successfully using a computer - Mac and PC users alike - comes to realize after a while that the task of integrating things on their computers and making everything work falls on THEM, not the developers of applications like Adobe. Some applications pose unique challenges, but to think you can just throw up your hands and try to make it someone else's problem when something goes wrong simply isn't a viable strategy. Maybe that's how things should be, but it's not how it is.
For those of you struggling to get Photoshop to run properly, bear in mind that it's on you to get things working. It works for most folks. It could be a configuration or setup choice you've made that may need revisiting, or some kind of restorative activity that you need to do, or even something very minor like clearing your Photoshop preferences, but it may well take your learning new things and doing things you didn't think you'd have to do to get back to where you can edit photos. It's no one's problem but your own.
So let us here on the forum help you - when we say to do something, try it. We're not here to jerk you around; we're users just like you who have already found the ways to make things work, and we'd like to help you do the same.

Can not open a pages 4.0.2 document using pages 2.0.2
We purchases our 2nd Mac and it has Pages 4.0.2. The existing Mac has Pages 2.0.2.
The newer Mac can open Pages documents created by the older one but the older one will not open Pages documents created with the newer Mac. Any suggestions ?Welcome to Apple Discussions
You haven't given us much information to go on. First, I'm not sure your question is at all related to the OP's (original poster's) question & it would have been best to start a new topic. When you do start a new topic, please give some more details such as the version of Pages, the version of Mac OS X & how you have been attaching the files. Have you made any changes to your Mac recently such as upgrading the system software? If you are using iWork '08 or iWork '09, there are dedicated forums for those versions.
You should set your Discussions profile to display your model of Mac & the version of Mac OS X. Go to My Settings in the right-hand sidebar of this window & fill in the information. This will save you having to enter it in each post. -
Edit in Photoshop CS4... does not open the selected file.
Sorry if this is an old topic, but I can not seem to find the answer and I was hoping someone here might know.
When in Lightroom (2.2 or 2.3) if I select "Edit in Photoshop CS4..." or any of those dropdown commands, Photoshop opens....and that is it. The selected photo from Lightroom is NOT opened/merged/panoramaized. duuh. frustrating.
So I re-installed Lightroom, updated to the 2.3, re-installed CS4. all with the same effect that Photoshop opens, but the selected file is NOT opened.
Has anyone experienced this? Any solutions?
Thanks in advance. When you remove the obvious,
that which is left must therefore be the truth -- Sherlock Holmes
Short version:
When I created a new lightroom catalog, and imported a single, standalone file, It worked fine. But when I imported to the new catalog, any photos from my existing catalog, it would fail.
Turns out that I was doing something a bit out of the ordinary with the IPTC Copyright field. In order to make my copyright information look "different" when I would export a file.
One would normally put in that field something like "© 2009 someone". I discovered a few months ago that I could make this field display as a multi line entry.
ie.
if you wanted to put XY into the copyright field, but wanted it to display as:
X
Y
all you would have to do is to put a carrage return between the two characters. (hint ctl^enter). Now when you displayed the "copyright" in an output file, it will display
vertically instead of all the characters in a horizontal line.
After being frustrated by this for a couple of weeks, I simply started removing every option that I might have applied to photographs that I would import with Lightroom. One of the last ones was the "vertical" information I put in the copyright field in a Preset. (when you remove the obvious...).
Funny thing is that no program really cares about the formatting of that field, or if it has multiple lines in the data, or special characters.......It even opens up just fine in Photoshop / Gimp / PSE / etc. with no problems.
But, if you have multiple lines of data in the Copyright Field (and I suspect others as well),
AND you want to open up the file from Lightroom in Photoshop, using the standard menu item of " Edit with Photoshop CS4", for some reason Photoshop will start, but never open the designated file. I would expect some parsing something just giving up after it encounters a CR.
But.....All is well that ends well. Now I can quit obsessing, and move on to something else...
Best,

Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google
Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google, an error message comes up saying safari cannot connect to the server. Can anyone help me with this please?
Hi Joshua ..
Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
208.67.222.222
Click +
208.67.220.220
Then click OK.
More about OpenDNS here.

Suddenly Preview will not open any documents
All of the sudden, Preview will not open any documents on my MacBook Pro OSX 10.8. I can get the program itself to open, but when I try a PDF, I get an error.
The only thing I did today was add a second monitor to my setup using the Diamond USB Display Adaptor Pro BVU195. I don't recall if the issue started immediately thereafter or not. I tried unplugging the device but it didn't fix anything.
I ran the disk utility and repaired any disk permissions that it identified.

Thanks very much!Okay, well, the Diamond displaylink for the second monitor looks like it was the culprit. I uninstalled and Preview (and Parallels) is now working again.
So, that leads to the next topic. I did a bunch of research and it looks like there is no way to hook a second monitor up to my MacBook Pro (not Retina). Besides this Diamond thing I've also tried Matrox DualHead2Go, which I couldn't get to work despite several hours on the phone with customer support. Is there no option? -
I can not open "www us army mil/" or most related web sites ...
I use the site a lot at work; it is also known as ako. It is a site created for use by US DoD personnel. If you type: - ako - into google several links appear. I can only open the one for their help page and their publicly available information page. The other pages start to connect then freeze, eventually I get a message that says:
"Safari could not open the page “http://www.us.army.mil/” because the server is not responding."
So far I have tried taking off pop up blockers, emptying the cache in my Safari menu, deleting all cookies, using Firefox instead of Safari, calling the "ako" help desk who did not do much, and loading all available updates for my Mac OS X (10.4.11).
Please advise:
Any help appreciated. I have had no other problems with loading web pages from across the internet. This has been an issue for me for a month or more, I just started working hard on a solution the last week or so due to no longer having my Dell with Windows which could open this page. I am relatively new to Mac systems, and not that computer savvy so if you know the answer, please simplify it if you have the time.

Super_B..Thanks for the help Mulder. I gave up for a while, and just got back to dealing this problem tonight. Anyway I got an idea after reviewing another one of your responses. It was Topic : "I am having trouble opening a particular web page." posted July 9th ref: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1590386&tstart=105
Any way I had already messed with my preferences a lot, but I tried one more thing which I should have done at first. I unchecked everything under the security tab, as several blocks were checked, and changed "accept cookies" to "ALWAYS".
The web page tried to do something this time but instead the page was just blank. I went back into preferences and re-checked "Enable Javascript" as you had suggested on the other thread. Well, IT WORKED!!! I am happy, I can open the page now.
I don't know which block(s) I needed to change, but I feel better knowing that it was nothing to big as near as I can tell. I still think AKO has some issues with its site, perhaps its security certs, but anyway this seemed to resolve my problem. Again I appreciate all the help.
Cheers

How do you get a topic to open in a custom window when accessed from the index?
I right click on an index key word and open Properties. There is only one topic associated with this key word. I click on the Advanced tab, select the custom window that I created. Click OK, compile, etc.
When I try to access this topic from the index, it still opens in the default pane. When I access it from the TOC, it opens in the custom window. How can I get the topic to open in the custom window from the index?
Thanks!
SueHello,
The link might not work in Preview (When the option to open link in new tab is checked) however it will work if you do a File>Preview page/site in Browser.
Muse Preview has only one tab and cannot open another tab/window which is why this functionality does not work in Muse Preview. but works in preview in Browser and in published site.
