Toronto Final Cut Pro User Group Tuesday May 15th meeting

May's TOFCPUG meeting is not to be missed as we will be reviewing the National Association of Broadcasters convention that took place in Las Vegas last month.
The meeting will provide up to date information relating to developments with Final Cut Pro, associated software, related technologies and advances in the Macintosh platform. The meeting program has been designed to provide attendee with the scope of technologies shown at the conference and is of interest to anyone who produces and edits media on a professional level.

200% or more is not strange. Remember that your mac has 4 cores (you say it's 3 months old, so I assume it is a new model), so 200% amounts to using 2 of these 4 cores to the max.
Regarding the question of creating a new admin user: while it sits in the same system, it may help if the problem is caused by some user-specific preferences or settings. Not likely in your case, since you seem to have reinstalled from scratch, but still it is worth a try. It takes 5 minutes and may help pinpoint the problem.

NO image , just sound - also for Final Cut Pro users

Hey everybody!!
I am editing a movie on Final Cut Pro, and I use Quick Time 7.1 to capture the clips and source them to FCP. The type of recorder I am using is an HDV, and up to a couple of days ago, things ran smoothly.
Then I started having problems with my Mac, of a different kind, and I had a friend of mine RESTORE my system. After that, I can't work on my film anymore, cause the Quick Time files from Capture Scratch only play sound, and have a blank screen. Every time I try to open them a window box appears, telling me that Quick Time is missing some components, and cannot play the clips properly. I tried downloading most of these programms, like Divx and On2, but the clips still can't play. I also tried erasing and re-installing Quick Time, but this doesn't seem to work either.
I must have edited and delivered this video by tommorow, so what do I do??

After that, I can't work on my film anymore, cause the Quick Time files from Capture Scratch only play sound, and have a blank screen.Sounds like you have "lost" your HD video component package. Try re-installing FCP (or specifically the HDV, AppleIntermediate, and/or DVCPRO HD components depending on "Easy Set-Up" option used for capture).

Often, I much prefer that to the Manual, though the Search function is very clunky. Search for Nest for example and you'll get about 50 listings for the table of contents and indexes alone, when all I would really want is the explanation of how to actually create a Nest.

Search.

Ease of use to get through the manual instead of going through the books themselves.

Better organization of the search results. Again, if I search Nests, make the first set of results the answers that actually show me how to use the tool, not the 50 times it appears in the table of contents and indexes.

Honestly, Apple's is the best I've seen for the moment.

Just crack the app open and start. Use websites like the Creative Cow for more input and ideas.

I thought the Tutorial that came with my first copy of FCP (Version 2.0) was outstanding at introducing me to the interface and how FCP operated. I came from Media 100 and in particular, the Log and Capture operation was completely different than what I was used to.

Media Manager. Not sure why it has to be so convoluted. Media 100 was too easy with this one. Select the Sequence to be up-rez'd, set your new format and capture.

Actually both. If the electronic search gets too frustrating, I'll pull the print manual out to find what I really need.

Not really. Internet based help is always nice, but I don't keep my FCP workstations connected to the web so that would actually create a bigger hassle for us.

17" Powerbook display, 17" 20" and 23" Apple Displays and a 17" Sony Display.

Highest resolution for that monitor.
• Do you use multiple computer displays?
Yes. 23 & 17" on one G5. 20 & 17" on the 2nd G5. 17" Powerbook
Powerbook G4 17, G5 Dual 2.0, G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.5) AJA Kona 2 on both G5's, Fibre Channel and SATA arrays in use.

Final Cut Pro User Manual

Hi,
I am currently tutoring a class on Final Cut Pro 5.
does anyone know where I can get physical copies of the manual?
I currently am teaching via a non-searchable PDF version of the manual and would be grateful if anyone can help.

Brand new final cut pro user having trouble with .mpg files

Hi everybody,
i am brand new to editing on my iMac and final cut pro, so i will apologize now for any questions that seem really dumb. i am trying to bring in some .mpg files into a project and only the video will come in, no audio...when i play the files in quicktime player by themselves, they play just fine. i tried to export the files to quicktime movie files via the quicktime player (i don't have quicktime pro) and then those files played the video but no audio...not sure what to do..please help.

Final Cut Pro User

Hello, I am new to this, but I have just finished putting together a sequence and was asked to render out the sequence in order to be able to send out as a smaller file via send space. I know that the sequence is rendered, but how to render smaller?

What do you mean 'non-searchable"? My versions of Adobe reader will search the help file with no difficulty. What's up with yours?

Final Cut Pro X and 4:3 monitor

Hi, I'm sorry for my bad English!
I need an help about my 4:3 monitor and my MacPro.
I am a Final Cut Pro user... When I used Final Cut Pro 7, the software was perfect in my 1024*768 screen resolution.
Now, with Final Cut Pro X my monitor doesn't show all the window and I have to move the window to see the rest of the window.
Is there any solution, as letterbox the monitor? I can't spend any money for a new monitor and work with Final Cut in this way is very impossibile.
Apple didn't think to users with an old monitor!!!
Help me! Thank you.

An ATI 4870 was the only 4xxx there is no 4600, or it is ATI 2600XT which were being recalled and replaced and may not be certified for FCP-X

Wierd Final Cut Pro 7 behaviour!

i am running Final Cut Pro 7 on a Mac Pro with 10.6.3.
For the first time since upgrading to FCP 7 i have encountered a very strange thing.
Here's the scenario:
I have a 2 min XDCAM 720p25 Sequence with a few layers of audio and a roughly 3 of video. I have proceeded rendering the the entire sequence.
Now here's the strange part, once the render has completed and i proceed to export the sequence, using the same settings and the export has completed, the entire sequence suddenly has an orange Unlimited Render strip above it. Even after closing without saving and opening the project again the render strip is still visible.
i have deleted all preference files, the necessary ones in the Final Cut Pro User Data folder and the FCP plist.
if anyone can help please contact me urgently!

Ok, shot in the dark about your orange line. I'm pretty new but I believe your playback control quality settings may be set to Dynamic. Under the menu Final Cut Pro>System Preferences select the Playback Control Tab. In the Playback labeled area the second box is labeled 'Video Quality' if this is set to Dynamic it will/can cause you to see an orange line above your footage. *Even after you've rendered it.
Basically its a setting that says Final Cut will vary the quality of playback in order for you to see the footage with all its effects. You'd use this if you had complex cuts with FXs and transitions and fades in and out, etc... It won't allow the complexity of all those edits to stop the preview. Instead it drops the preview quality down and up based on how well your processor is handling all those edits.
You can select another 'Playback Quality' setting and the orange line should go away. But playback may suffer. Of course this doesn't effect your final output just your previewing quality while working on the project. I'd love to know if this helps.

Using Final Cut Pro?

I'm pretty decent at using Imovie for the Mac, and i'm thinking this may be something I could enjoy doing, but I would like to take some classes. I eventually want to get final cut studio, and seen they have final cut pro training classes, but I think one needs to already be a video editor in order to take those classes. Do community colleges have video editing classes or certificates? What type of classes do you suggest I take? I wouldn't mind doing weddings, and other types of events.
