Toshiba 320GB external HDD suddenly thinks it is my 160GB disc!

PC: Toshiba Satellite A305D-S6848
Accessories: Toshiba 320GB external USB hard drive; MODEL: HDDR320E03X
Toshiba 160GB external USB hard drive;
MODEL: HDDR160E03X
The other day I started my laptop with both of these drives already connnected. Suddenly, my 320GB USB drive, which is about half-full of music and video, is insisting that it is only 160GB capacity, and if full but shows no files.
I have already tried running diskcheck......no avail....ANY suggestions to recover date on this drive as it is only a few weeks old and has all of this info on it.
Thanx

Does it work on another PC? Perhaps the user installed a bad USB driver or something.
If it doesn't work on another PC, you could try some data recovery tools. Search google for "data recovery utility"

  • Toshiba 320GB external HDD make my computer extremely slow

    Hi.
I bought this product a few weeks ago now and whenever I use it, it makes my omputer go so slow tp the point where I can't actually do anything on it, due to the fact that everything becomes non-responsive. Also, the rate at which I transfer files onto it is also very slow. Any ideas why and what I can do to speed things up a bit?
    Thanks.

    Hi
You have suggested the notebook becomes slowly during the usage of the external HDD.
I assume you transfer a data from the internal HDD to the external USB HDD.
I think its not very unusual the notebook runs slowly during the data transmission.
It depands also on the programs which runs in the background of the OS.
I dont know which interface you use USB2 or only a USB but the data transfer depends on the interface.

  • Toshiba 1TB external HDD

I purchesed one of these about amonth ago, to day when I plugged the machine into the mains an turned it on nothing happend. i have left it for about an hour and tried again, still nothing happens, what could be the problem and how would i go about fixing this.
    Cheers in advance.

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba 320GB external HDD. It would work when connected to by Dynadock, but not when connected to any of the USB ports on my Qosmio G50. I tried removing all the USB drivers and restarting without luck.
It turned out to be the fact I wasn't using the original USB cable that came with the HDD, but a stock stadard USB cable. The original cable that came with the carries 5volts whereas a std USB may not. And the reason the Dynadock worked is that it has a mains power source.

  • Toshiba 320GB EXT HDD Boot Fault

Hi all im new here only signed up because you guys seem to know your stuf!!
I'm rather pc literate, im a music/video producer and use TWO Ext HD's to save most of my work.
Ive had this Toshiba 320gb for around a year now, with no problems, never been damaged. But recently over the past week or so its started to struggle firing up Makin a "ticking" sound from the HD itself. I've tried it on other computers, I've tried it with different power supplies, and now I've left it on for like two days and its still not booted up.
This is really urgent as I work for several labels and need my work ASAP.
Other than sendin it to a data recovery centre is there anything I could do?
Or why would this have happened I dont wont it to happen again?
I've recently purchase two Seagate 500gb as these are well known for bein sturdy an never fail.
Please, please, please if anyone can help I would be massivly appreciative.
Cheers I'll check here daily for any feedback.

    Hi,
    that sounds not good....
If you are lucky, you can read out the data of the HDD with a Data Recovery Software like OnTrack Easy Recovery.
If you can not get your data back with this software, the only way to get the data back is to send your HDD to a Data recovery company, but this is very expensive.
I had the same problem with a external HDD and I could save my data with the software from OnTrack.
I wish you good luck, because I produce, too... ;)

I have just recently had to replace my laptop with a new Windows 7 device as the old Vista one blew up.
Just tried to log on to my external *Toshiba PX1265E HDD* and to my shock its not being recognized.
Issue is that i have a lot of pictures on it of my Son when he was a baby.
Is there any drivers or software out there that can get the files etc.... from the device using Windows 7.

    Hi
This external HDD is an plug&play device this means that no drivers are required
So it looks more like HDD hardware problem :(

  • Help - following external hdd crash

I have 6,250 tracks occupying 32gb in my iTunes, fully synchronised with myPod.
iTunes including the iTunes folder is stored on a 320gb Toshiba drive.
Whilst copying to the external drive the other night I got an error saying there was corrupt file.
Following this the the external drive was not accessible.
After a drive reformat and an iTunes repair, iTunes is back up and running ?
How can this be ? The external drive is empty yet the 6,250 tracks are still in iTunes.
iTunes show that the file is now stored on my pc hard drive instead of the external drive.
This cannot be as my pc hdd doesn't have enough space for 32gb ?
    Can anyone help ?

I then did a backup of it using XP.
Both are approx 33gb the same as my iPod.
Unfortunately now I have twice as much on iTunes, 66gb eveything is duplicated.
None have an exclamation mark and all can be played.
How can I get iTunes back to one copy of each song ?

  • Need new powercable for external HDD

Would be great if somebody could help me out. I need a new power cabel for my Toshiba 320GB external usb hard drive.
I can not find a serial nr on the HDD nor on the box.
The specs of the HDD are: 7200 RPM, read seek 8.9 ms, data buffer 8mb. Sofar I was not able to find a shop or an online store where I can order just the power cable.
Thanks for your help in advance, Nick.

I am afraid nobody here will be able to help. Such info you can get from someone who has access to Toshiba data base. In my opinion you should visit your local dealer or some shop with the same product and pick up info about this cable.
you didnt even offer the part number of this HDD. How to identify this product?

  • Twin unpowered USB hub for connecting external HDD and iphone

I have a MBA and a powered Kensington 7 port USB hub which works great when I am either at home/in the office.
Is there an unpowered twin port USB hub that would allow me to connect both my WD myv passport 320gb external HDD and 3g iphone to my MBA when i am truly on the move?
    thanks in advance

Because those are both drawing power from the macbook air, it might be questionable, but any should do, but I haven't seen any 2 port hubs, only four port ones, and I tend to like Logiix, as their support is good and their products are good also, and they are fairly low profile.

  • Sudden Time Machine & External HDD Problems -*All Backups gone

I really hope someone can help...
Today, I went to backup my MacBook Pro files using Time Machine and my external HDD, as usual.
Until today, Time Machine and the HDD have been running fine, and today I saw all backups in the HDD going back to September 2011.
However, today when I tried to backup an error message came up saying there was not enough disk space on the HDD. Here's the error message:
    >>>
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 299.79 GB but only 50.95 GB are available.
Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.
    <<<
Nothing would work. So I deleted 1 backup to free some space, but the same error kept coming. I deleted another backup...no go.
Then all of a sudden all HDD in Finder is showing NO backups/files/folders...nothing!!!
Time Machine still thinks all the old backups are on the HDD. So does finder, which shows the following for the HDD:
    Capacity: 159.7 GB
    Available: 50.95
Used: 108,747,599,872 bytes (108.75 GB on disk)
Yet NO backups/files/folders are showing on the HDD under Finder and Time Machine won't recognise the old back-ups — ie, it says "Oldest Backup - None, Latest Backup - None"
I've tried all sorts of things... including restarting, shutting down, repairing the HDD via Disk Utility etc and the tips here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...t=time+machine
    But nothing is helping.
I really don't know what to do next.
(BTW, by chance, i did keep two of the old backups that I copied over today from the external HDD to my internal HDD)
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    1. Although I wouldn't recommend what you are asking to do nor do I know if you can do it with the device you are buying (if it has its own RAID card you may not be able to do anything with it.) However, for a software RAID using Disk Utility you would need to partition each drive before creating any RAIDs. Let's assume you partition each drive into two volumes. Call them A1 and B1 and A2 and B2. Then you can create one RAID using A1 and A2, and a second RAID using B1 and B2. Keep in mind that you cannot access two partitions on a single drive simultaneously, so when trying to access one RAID you will find that you lose any RAID speed benefits when trying to access the other RAID to, say, copy data from one RAID to the other or when trying to copy data to both RAIDs from another source.
    2. If a RAID is connected to a FireWire port or to the USB port on the AEBS, then it can be used as a TM backup drive. TM can only have one backup volume on any one computer, but multiple computers can backup to the same TM backup drive or to other backup drives, but it would be more efficient for all the computers to backup to the same TM volume. TM will backup each computer separately into discrete folders on the backup drive.
In my opinion I would recommend having a single 2 TB RAID volume that is connected either to a FireWire port on one of the networked computers (and set up as a shared drive) or connected to the USB port on the AEBS. Each computer can then backup wirelessly to the drive except for the computer to which the drive is connected via FireWire, if that's how you choose to set it up.

  • Re: Satellite L550-129 doens't support Toshiba external HDD

Toshiba Satellite L550-129 doens't support Toshiba external hdd store.e canvio.
Al other thosiba laptops in the familie work with the store.e canvio and a lot of older coputers?????

If your external HDD is not recognized, then this can be caused by low power supply from USB port or its simply an software issue.
The Toshiba page http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/chd/store-externe-festplatten/canvio/ says that STOR.E CANVIO needs 900mA
The usual USB 2.0 standard provides 500mA
So you need an USB Y cable to connect such HDD to two USB 2.0 ports

  • Toshiba 320Gb HDD on USB2.0 freezes the computer

I have just bought a Toshiba 320Gb USB2.0 HDD and whenever I try to transfer data the light goes red after about 20 secs and the computer freezes. The only way I can sort it out is by turning it off at the wall. The HDD works fine through a USB1.0 port and other peripherals like printers joysticks etc work fine through my USB2.0 Pci card just not my HDD any ideas what this could be??
    Thanks

    Hi
You can also try to use the USB1.0 port. But if you want to use the high data transfer you can try to use the firewire port. Using of Firewire to USB2 adapter for example.

  • Toshiba external disk suddenly "unwritable "

I have read through so many forums, and I have yet to read a competent response.
Please understand that I am frustrated as well as that:
    1) I no how to "get Info";
    2) I know how to "unlock" with the little golden padlock:
    3) I do NOT wish to "format" the drive; and
    4) the Mac utility does not work.
So, where are all the Mac Geniuses on the Mac "support" Community?any forum have I read where similar–and I mean SIMILAR, not merely related–problems, all of which are answered with the grade-school teacher responses above.
If I must reiterate myself, I'll instead buy a Windows Tablet despite 27 years of sticking with Macs (I have to keep FOUR Macs thanks to the Intel chip; prior to 2006, I kept ONE Mac for several years and traveled frequently as well as published mags, books and more. Those days are GONE. Macs are clearly no less vulnerable to viruses and far more expensive.)

Attach the external HDD and click on it COMMAND+I.  It will generate an image such as this.  Post it.
    Ciao.

  • Sudden lack of external HDD usability?

Did Apple change something with OS 10.5.1? I went from having three functional external HDDs (two USB JBOD external enclosures, each with 2x250GB inside) and a FW400 80GB that's been kicking around since '03 or '04 to NO functional externals. My thumb drive still works, but given that all three kicked the bucket simultaneously and right after an OS update, I'm leaning away from hardware failure.
USB: Not even recognized by the computer.
FW: Shows up as Unknown Device in System Profiler; never mounts, has two FW400 ports on the back and so I can use one to connect it to the Mac and another to chain a second device. Chaining the iPod I own causes iPod to mount and sync normally.

too much to respond to...chainingyou should not do but you do...try the following see if it helps
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine...
It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged.
Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either.
It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the PPC mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime.
2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following :
RESET-NVRAM (enter)
RESET-ALL (enter)
3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again.
If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

    From Kappy post:
922 is only used in dual drive cases to provide a "build-in firmware RAID support"
    912 or 912+ is FW800, the "+" means USB2
    911 is FW400
924 adds eSATA support along with FW400/800
MacSales, OWC Tech Support library is where I would go first, as they do tend to have or links to, firmware updates for Oxford.
    From Wiebetech:
I just upgraded my Mac OS, and now I'm having trouble with my FireWire device. What can I do?
A: With nearly every OS update Apple releases, some external drives are not recognized after the update. The typical symptom is that the device will not mount but the volume is visible and grayed out in Disk Utility. This means that the device is working properly, but the OS does not recognize the volume as mountable. Sometimes the drive does not show up at all.
The first thing to do is to see if repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility First Aid feature solves the problem. If not, try repairing the disk with First Aid. Another possible solution is to zap the PRAM. This is done with a keyboard command while rebooting. Restart your computer and hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys. Consult the Apple web site for details.
If this does not work, then try pushing the PMMU reset button on the logic board. Consult the Apple web site for locations of the button for your Mac. If the drive still does not show up, shut down, disconnect all peripheral devices, and boot from the Mac OS Installation CD. The later the OS version, the better. Do not reinstall the OS, but when the Installer is loaded up and ready to begin, go to the File menu and use the Disk Utility program. Connect the drive that is having problems, then start the Disk Utility application. If you see the external drive and it is not grayed out, you know the drive is okay. Run Disk First Aid on it anyway. Then run it on your internal boot drive while you are at it. When done, unmount the external drive and UNPLUG it! Then restart the Mac.
When the Mac has restarted and is running on the internal boot drive, reconnect the external drive.

  • My disconnected external HDD is somehow writing itself to my internal HDD!

Ok, so the other night I got a notification from OS X that I was almost out of disk space, which I found very odd, because the last time this happened was when I had my external hard drive connected, and it was somehow writing itself onto my internal hard drive (it is formatted so that I can use it for both my MBP and the Windows machine at home). You can understand my puzzlement when I got the message, as I did not have my external connected at the time, and had not had it connected since the day before. I had, however, noticed some significant lagging in Safari and Adium, which I found very odd as being the only things affected. As of writing this, I will have cleaned off what has been written to my hard drive twice now (each time 50+ GB!), and I am starting to get very frustrated, with finals and projects coming due very fast now. It appears that the writing starts after I leave Safari/Adium idle for a while, which is very odd, as I can't imagine why either of these programs being idle would initiate this unexplained writing.
I have, however, noticed that there seems to be something invisible in the trash folder that will simply not delete, and has been there since I had the initial problem of my external writing to the internal drive. The Trash constantly tells me there is "1 item" in the trash, but nothing shows up. When I go to Secure Empty I get the little window that tells you the completion status on the emptying, and it always says "4 Items to delete." Even after showing all hidden files and folders, nothing shows up in the trash, despite there always being "1 Item" in there. My guess is that this could be what is causing the writes. What I don't understand is how in the world it managed to store my 100+ GB of stuff on my external in an invisible file that is taking up next to no space on my system, because when I do a scan using Grand Perspective, it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary files and folders that I know should be there. Certainly not 100+ GB of what I have on my external, as I know what I have where, and what are duplicates, and duplicates only show up after the external files have written themselves.
    Some additional details for consideration:
Bootcamped hard drive, 15GB for my Windows partition, have only used it to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, and have only connected to the internet on Windows a total of 3 times, each time to download Firefox, iTunes, and Safari, no additional browsing.
External HDD is a LaCie Firewire 400 drive, 320GB formatted for both Windows and Mac (HFS+, right?), haven't connected it in at least two days. Last time this happened it was actually connected, but this time has not been connected when the files have magically appeared on my internal HDD.
There is an invisible file (or multiple files) somehow not showing up AT ALL that is hanging around in the trash. I believe this invisible file(s) to be the culprit, though I'm puzzled as to how. Each time the mysterious writes have happened, Safari/Adium have been idle and open.
If you're wondering how in the world this is happening, don't worry. The first time this happened when my drive was actually connected, I took my MBP to the Apple Store in Indianapolis and totally stumped three employees, including the store manager. If he thought that was odd, wait until I tell him its now writing to my HDD without being connected!

Each time the problem is in the /Volumes/LaCie folder, which is hidden. This leads me to believe its a ghost from my external HDD, rather than from my Bootcamp partition. The 50+ GB that it has written so far has not been duplicates of less than 10GB of information on my Windows partition, it is all files and folders from my approx. 130+GB of information on my external.
In talking with a friend on my floor last night, he thinks it might be a ghost image, as some people have evidently gotten this problem in their email accounts here at the school lately. This ghost image is on my OS X partition, and I'm almost 100% certain it isn't a problem with my Bootcamp partition, as nothing appears in my trash on the Windows side. I have also never used my external with my Windows partition. Like I said, everything being written is from my external hard drive.
Thanks for the link, checking it out now.
