Toshiba A350 sometimes won't boot properly

I notice there are number of problems similar to this but no one has a fix.
Problem:
1) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.
2) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop it boots to the Windows start up screen but with thin rainbow coloured lines on the screen (occasionally you can make out the background Windows start up screen). Doesn't go any further.
3) Most of the time it boots and it works perfectly. No crashes or screen problems.
After holding the power button down for a few seconds during 1) and 2) to "shut down" after a few attempts booting it will boot properly.
So far I've flashed the BIOS to the latest version and changed Processor Power Management to 100% under power options (advice from a link on Google). Neither have helped.
Any ideas on this problem? It seems quite specific to start up as it works well otherwise. Very annoying having to try multiple times to boot.
Specifications:
Toshiba A350 (approx. 1 year old, out of warranty)
Windows 7 Pro x64 (upgrade from Vista)
Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13Ghz
4GB DDR2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (512MB discrete video memory)
Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem
(Problem:
*Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.)
My laptop only doesn't start on battery only. The power light comes on and the stays on with the laptop in a freeze (nothing displayed on screen). The only way to get this light off is to remove battery.
Starts EVERY time with the AC power connected (with or without battery).
Works perfectly normal once booted
SOMETIMES starts with the battery only if I boot soon after I have already been using the laptop
I have tried the static release processes but doesn't work.
After having this trouble I updated to latest BIOS but has not helped
Tried a different battery and has not helped
Is a Toshiba Satellite PRO L500 T4400 4GB 15" Win7 Laptop - only 3 weeks or so old
Very annoying!
Please someone with an answer??

  • Mac won't boot properly unless in safe mode

Recently I updated my MacBook Pro to OS  X Yosemite. I then started the process of the data encryption.
I don't know what happened, but maybe the encryption failed, because now every time I turn my mac on, it won't boot properly unless it's in safe mode.
Either it will have a black screen with a visible cursor, or just the desktop with no dock or the bar along the top and no icons, or it does boot up properly, but works extremely slowly. Like if I was to press the apple symbol on the top-right of the screen, it would take 5 minutes to actually open it. Nothing works properly.
And so I opened up my system preferences, and discovered that the Encryption is stuck on half-finished. But I can't stop it. If I try to turn encryption off it says I have to wait till it's finished. But it never does, the progress bar never moves.
If I open System Preferences while in Safe Mode, the progress bar for Encryption is grey, and underneath it says "connect to power to continue encryption". But it IS connected to power.
Have I stuffed my Mac? Is there a way to get it working again?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My Sleek won't boot properly! Stuck on Recovery/Rescue m

Each time I boot my Zen Sleek it either goes to the rescue mode or it just locks up on the Creative logo. I've had it for a few months and this is the first time it seriously locked up on me. I hard reset it on the bottom and it's still the same. I tried to run Disk Cleanup through the rescue mode and it doesn't even run it!! I don't know what's going on... Yesterday it was playing like a beauty.

Edit- Found the problem. Whenever linux restarts the device doesn't have the power cut and it won't reinitialize. If I shutdown, and then restart, the power is cut and it's fine.

Wonder if you have a conflict between two audio cards ... for example, I have a friend with some PulseAudio problems caused by conflict between the HDMI audio from his graphics card and his onboard sound. Something would switch PulseAudio to the wrong card and it would just quit after getting itself into a twist. Unsolved, I'm afraid, but have a look at commands such as:
    aplay -l
    pactl list sinks
    pactl stat
(Latter two will need PulseAudio coaxed into life first)
and of course, the Arch wiki.
If there is a conflict, blacklisting kernel modules might also be needed.

  • MSI GT70 ONC-008US - Won't boot properly

For whatever reason, my laptop refuses to boot properly now. For awhile it just had a problem booting from sleep (no image on screen, seemingly working otherwise), so I avoided doing that. It also did this when trying to power on the laptop, but this problem was fixed ignored by simply holding the button and trying again.
It now it wont boot, despite the number of times I might try to make it. Nothing appears on the screen at all, sometimes my keyboard back-lights come on but now not even that happens. I don't know what to do. The hard drive (I think it's the hard drive?) makes a sort of clanking sounds a couple times and then goes quiet, occasionally making small beaps. USB devices power up per usual.
If you know what might be happening I'd be eternally grateful. My only guess is that the hard drive is failing, but wouldn't the screen still show something if it was simply the hard drive failing?
##UPDATE:## After trying a million times it finally booted. I still want to figure out what is going on. Please help

I've contacted at least three computer repair shops in my local area and all seem to think it's the motherboard. FML
It sucks. But it should still be under warranty from MSI. I would contact them to be perfectly honest.

  • Bootcamp Windows Installer won't boot properly on rBMP late 2013

I have been redirected to this community. I will repost the same question I asked in the mackbook pro community. I am new to Apple Support Communities, I hope this is okay for me to ask the question here again.
Here is my post in the other community: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5922375?tstart=0
I just bought my MBP Retina 13" Late 2013 last week. It came with Mavericks 10.9, and I have since updated it to 10.9.1.
I have installed Windows 7 64bit using Bootcamp, and ran into a situation, which I hope the experts here could give me a hand.
I used the first two options in Boot Camp Assistant (BCA) and sucessfully created a Bootcamp Windows Installer for Windows 7 64bit on a USB Thumb Drive (USB 3.0). Then I launched Boot Camp Assistant again, and selected the last option to install Windows 7 64 bit on the bootcamp partition, the installation went through successfully. Both Windows 7 and the bootcamp drivers are installed, and I am able to dual boot OS X and Windows properly.
However, if I try to launch Bootcamp Windows 7 USB Installer created using BCA as described in the above by holding down <option> key while rebooting, and select the USB device lableled as 'Windows', Windows 7 Installer starts (in BIOS boot mode, I believe) and then it freezes after it gets to the language selection screen, the mackbook no longer responds to either the trackpad or the keyboard.
In other words, this Windows 7 USB Installer boots properly when launched by BCA's third option. However, this USB Installer does not boot properly when launched by selecting 'Windows' after holding down <option> key while rebooting. What am I doing wrong here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Joe

I did create a Recovery Disk from inside Windows 7 this weekend following your suggestion. Unfortunately, this has the same problem as the installer.
However, USB Installer I created for Windows 8.1 could boot properly both in BIOS boot mode or EFI boot mode. This Windows 8.1 USB Installer is created using the standard procedure for the BCA; the only difference from the Windows 7 USB Installer is that I used Windows 8.1 ISO instead of Windows 7 ISO.
With this Windows 8.1 USB Installer, I am able to access the BOOTCAMP partition and perform necessary operations to fix startup issues, and perform backup and restore using the native Windows tools for the BOOTCAMP partition. And no need to spend $30 on WinClone
    Thanks for your help!

  • Toshiba CB30 Chromebook won't boot a custom kernel.

I've had Arch running on my Chromebook for a while now, but I haven't been able to figure this out.
It runs fine with the standard kernel. The problem is, when I install any custom kernel it won't boot. I've tried both linux-ck and linux-chromebook and I get the same error, so it's not a problem with the kernel.
This is the error I get
    I've tried re-making and re-making the GRUB config, so I don't think it's a GRUB problem.
    Any ideas?

Two ways of reaching the data if your hard drive is still alive, Sue.
    (1) Download a free CD that boots to another operating systems or to a preinstall environment and copy important files to external media. A popular bootable disc is Ubuntu. There's also KNOPPIX, Bart's, UBCD4Win, SystemRescueCd, and others.
    (2) Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and access it from another computer. To remove the hard drive, see the first two steps here.

  • G5 won't boot properly/running incredibly slow :(

    Hey, friends.
So my mom and dad were kind enough to gift me their old G5 (I think they got it in 2006). Trouble is, I can't get it to boot properly. It takes about an hour for it to go from turning on to the point where the contents of the desktop appear and I would (theoretically) be able to do something. After just sitting there for the longest time with the color wheel spinning, the screen went blank although the computer and monitor were still on. Eventually it came back, but the computer runs incredibly slow. Like, clicking on the Apple menu caused the color wheel to spin for about ten minutes.
I tried /sbin/fsck -fy, which is about the extent of my computer doctoring skills and this is the message I got:
    diskOs9: I/O error.
    Invalid node structure
    (4, 1771)
    ** Volume check failed.
    Any thoughts?
    Message was edited by: Alex_C.

Pull the drive and put in a new one.
I've never had much faith if any in Apple fsck or First Aid.
The G5 stopped being sold in 2006 so that would make it one of the dual-core / pci express graphics.
See if you have 10.4.6 or later DVD so you can attempt to repair and install while you wait to get Alsoft Disk Warrior, and a new system drive to work with and build a new boot drive etc to which you can copy over any files & programs you need.
An emergency boot volume is pretty much a necessity with Mac. Your system drive directory structure is not going to make it. In theory a Safe Boot can deal with minor corruption and rebuild boot cache.

  • Toshiba Satellite P200 - won't boot up. I'm scared of losing my files!

Hello. When I turn my computer on, it won't boot up. This appears on the screen:
    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click ‘next’.
    3. Click ‘ repair your computer’.
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manuafacturer for assistance.
    File: \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
    Status: Oxc00000e9
Info: windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt
I don't have the installation disc and don't want to restore to the factory settings as I will lose everything on my computer. Is there a way of getting it to the last recovery point? I haven't tried anything yet.
    Thank you!

  • Macbook won't boot properly.

Macbook won't boot. When turned on, it starts clicking; after a while, I get a gray screen with a blinking folder in the middle that has a question mark on it.  After a minute or two, it shuts off.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Computer won't boot properly

So with my pc, I have been having a problem where whenever I boot it up I will get the black screen of death.
Basically after I start it up, instead of the login screen I get a blank black screen with just a curser. I still hear the Windows chime.
However I can still boot into safe mode. I have determined that it is a graphic card problem because whenever I uninstall the drivers, it works just fine. No matter what drivers I use, it still won't work.  I have a gtx 970.  it works fine with Intel hd graphics 4600.  Also if I wait 1 minute between each attempt it sometimes boots up after around 5 attempts.
I tried re-installing my os but that didn't work.
I found some fixes where you do control alt delete and open the task manager and restart explorer.exe but that did not work either.
    Any more suggestions?
    Thank in advance.

I have followed the format.  I hope this helps a little...
Hi all, so I am having a problem with my newly built gaming desktop.  Whenever I boot it up, instead of showing the login screen it shows a black screen with a cursor.  Whenever I login, (I can still type in my password) I see a blank desktop with just my background.  Also if I keep it idol for long periods my explorer.exe will stop working and my desktop will disappear and just show my background.
Sometimes after about 5 attempts to boot it will succeed and boot normally.  (If I wait about a minute between each attempt)
These are the things I have tried:
    1. changing video card drivers
    2. attempting to restart explorer.exe (unable to access task manager)
    3. re-installing Windows
    4. using integrated graphics (worked just fine)
How I isolated the problem:  I am still able to access safemode.  I disabled my video card driver and my computer now works just fine.  Whenever I enable it my problem continues.  Also when it will boot up everything runs perfectly.  My games run just as they should.

My Toshiba A8 PTA83A-04F012 notebook will not boot. When I boot the machine, I get the normal Toshiba splash screen then the screen goes blanks with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. Apart from the CPU fan kicking in, nothing else happens. I've tried to boot from an alternative devices (eg  CD-ROM) but the same thing happens. I’ve even tried to get into the bios (setup) but it ignores my request. The keyboard seems to function normally. Please help. Tony

Sounds like it could be ram, try it with only one ram strip at a time, also did you install any software recently that could be not working correctly? Does it work in safe mode? Also in the bios see if the computer is reading the hard drive correctly, or maybe you changed a setting in the bios and need to use the default setings Detailed specs if you need them from toshiba http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=160275...

      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.

    PXE-MOF-Exiting PXE ROM.
I understand that this means that it is trying to boot from the LAN !
When operating in Safe Mode the C-drive seems OK, so there does not seem to be anything wrong with the HDD. But in Safe Mode I cannot connect to the Internet of course.
    I'm using Windows XP.
Anyone out there who can tell me what's going on ?
    All help gratefully received.

    Hello Collin

Please do not make experiments anymore and contact authorized service partner in your country as soon as possible. Who knows what is wrong there. Smoke can indicate to serious hardware problem and you should be careful with it.
I repeat again: please do not risk because it can end with more damaged hardware. Contact service and explain them the situation. Address and phone number you can find under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com Support & Downloads Find an ASP.

  • After Performing simple Terminal Command Mac 10.10 won't boot properly

    hey guys,
recently, i followed the steps in this tutorial:
How to Change View Options for ALL Finder Windows?
After doing so, my MacBook Pro OS X 10.10 does not start properly, getting stuck at the turning wheel after typing in the pw.
I noticed the terminal going through every single folder saying "find rm 'xxx' is a directory"
I triple checked the command line before.
I tried booting in safe mode.
I Hope there is a solution other than wiping all of it.

The command listed in that thread is exceptionally dangerous. Erase your hard drive and restore from backup.
