Toshiba Canvio Restore Issue

Hi,
I did a quick search on the forum to see if there was an already existing article and did not find any. My apology if there is already one, feel to relocate the discussion.
Recently, I bought an external hard drive in order to do a complete back-up of my computer and make a complete system restore. Doing the back-up was fine, it took around 30-40 minutes to transfer 180 GB of data using a USB 3.0 Port. Doing the restore was sadly another story.
I tried to do as it was stated in NTI Backup Now EZ for a full system restore. Unfortunately, while booting with hard drive, I get the following message: Missing Operating System. Trying to boot while having the hard drive being last in the booting priority list simply started Win 7 normally.
Something else I noticed too, while this hard drive is USB 3.0, when it is plugged in any of my USB 3.0 ports, the BIOS does not recognize the device as being connected on certain occasion, while in a USB 2.0 port it is always recognized.
I did an attempt on reading the .BNF files with the File and Folder restoration tab but was unable to see the files from both easy and advanced mode.
As one can see, I did many attempts but from now on I need some help because I am starting to run off possibilities to be honest.
Specifications:
O.S.: Win 7 64-bit Home Premium
Hard Drive Specs : Toshiba Canvio DESK External hard drive 2 TB USB 3.0
Hard Drive Model # : HDWC120XK3J1
If you need any other information, just let me know.

If I understand you correctly, you are attempting to boot from the external drive that contains your backup image.
I don't know anything about this program, but I feel certain that you are expected to boot from a special optical disc (CD or DVD) that you have burned.
Please read your User Manual for instructions.
Booting from my external drive is exactly what I tried. I did read the "Help section" concerning the restore procedure. As you will be able to see in the first image I linked, it is writen to refer to the software instructions. I linked then, with the next three pictures, what it looks like in the software and how to reach the "Complete System Backup" instructions. I did all this procedure and the only message my notebook shows me is "Missing Operating System".
What is your take on this ?

  • Toshiba Canvio Restore Problem

    Hello,
I am having trouble with the restore option on my Toshiba Canvio external hard drive. I have pictures and other media backed up on the drive which I can no longer access. The files are on the drive, but somehow I am unable to access or recover them. The only files I am able to retrieve are the last two backups I made.
    Here are some attached screenshots.
In the first image you see my opening an older backup.
In the second image you can see the restore box. Here is where the problem exists; I cannot see or access any files. If I click on "restore" it comes with a message saying "please select a valid job!".
In contrast, in the third image we see a more recent backup where you can see all the files.
Please help!! How can I fix this problem and restore my old files!

    Hi,
I'm assuming that NTI Backup Now EZ is what comes with the Toshiba drive (I have a Canvio, but didn't install the Toshiba software)?  And that's what you used to do the backups?
I think that NTI Backup compresses all of the files that you backup into ".NBF" files, the files  as shown in your problem2.jpg image.  I did some quick googling, and didn't find any thing to extract files directly from the .NBF files, so you're probably going to have to use the same software that you used to do the backup, to restore.
Have you tried just clicking on one of the .NBF files?  What happens?  Sometimes apps  associate with extensions like .NBF, so that might just startup NTI  Backup in restore mode.
Another thing,  in your problem3.png, did you check some of the  checkboxes in the left pane  (to select which directories you  want to restore) before you tried clicking the Restore button?

  • TOSHIBA Canvio Connect (EZ) Boot up and Restore Problems

I just recently purchased a TOSHIBA Canvio Connect (EZ) portable hard drive to back up my HP Pavilion. The backup went well. Following the Canvio instructions I created a boot drive on a USB Flash drive. Then I booted up the PC using the Flash drive and pressed the F12 Key as per instructions. I tried several times booting using the drive and pressing F12 but most of the time the computer just comes up normally and twice I got a  screen that read UEFI Boot Services with the option to select UBFI IPV4 Net Card or to select UBFI IPV6 Net Card. The screen shown in the instructions said I would have option to select USB to bring Up EZ.

HP Pavilion.   ...   pressed the F12 Key as per instructions
You are dealing with the computer's BIOS/UEFI now. That has nothing to do with the external drive.
The instructions probably assume a Toshiba computer. You'll need to consult the HP people.

Ask them how to set up the UEFI in your machine to boot from a USB flash drive.

  • How do I recover files from a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive?

I have been backing up my computer with a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive. My hard drive failed and I had to buy a new computer. I would like to save my data to the new computer, but I don't want to do a complete system backup because it would overwrite my new computer's operating system (or would it?). I would like to save individual files to my new computer. Is it possible to do this?

No way. Doing that would never overwrite you OS at anyhow. You can able to restore files from the backup copy, though you will not be able to restore file one by one.
    Alternate way
Try professional recovery software if the above methods didn't help you. Download it from here,

Please share if you've any further question than this.
    Good Luck!!

Every HDD is a “wear part”.
What does this mean? Well, sooner or later every HDD will die… and in most cases such issues appear suddenly and are surprising.
Such HDD is an simple plug’n play device…this means that you have to connect it to USB port and it should work…
If its not the case, the device could malfunctions and usually this isn’t fixable.

  • One Computer No Longer Recgonizes My Toshiba Canvio Portable 500 GB Hard Drive

Hello. I have a Toshiba Canvio Portable 500 GB Hard Drive. I used it to back up my files on my main computer and connected it to that computer every now and again to download more files. Suddenly, it stopped being recognized by my main computer a while back. Or more accurately, my main computer recognizes it but says that it needs to be formated before it can be used. I have not idea what happened to it. Oddly, the hard drive is recognized by all of my other computers (a MAC, a Chromebook and a standard PC Laptop) and I can access the files on there using those computers.  I have never used any of the other computers to download files. Is there a way to figure out how to get my main computer to recognize the hard drive again without reformatting it? I'd like to add more files from that computer to it. Thanks for the help. (I recently reinstalled windows and the drives for the hard drive on my main computer and still no luck.)

If you can get the 2008 started move large libraries such as  your iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes libraries to an External HD. Once you have verified the libraries have been successfully moved then Trash the ones on the internal HD and empty the Trash. Once these operations have been done then use:

  • Toshiba Canvio Desk 4tb not recognizesed on TV

    Hi,
I replaced my D3 Station 3TB (i broke it...) with Toshiba Canvio Desk 4tb, and i got a question; why is not working on my tv(Samsung LE40C530)?
My tv recognizes HDD-s only up to 2 tb, so i split the disc on two partitions(i did the same with db station and it worked perfectly...) but still it doesn't work, tv won't even change to media player when drive is plugged in, nothing...
I tried everything, changing between GPT-MRB, different partition size, different cables...but nothing seems to work.
So, am i missing something here or is my brand new Toshiba Canvio Desk 4tb just incompatible with my tv...i hope the first but...
    Please help!

    Thank you for answering,
I know, Samsung D3 Station was also an USB 3.0 HDD...and Toshiba Canvio Desk manual says that is USB 2.0 compatible.
I guess just isn't compatible with my TV...:-(

but I don't know if my computer can mount this without the thunderbolt stuff and all that.
Will I have to buy some kind of USB thunderbolt connector thing?
    Thanks..

    A Toshiba computer? If so,..
    1. Which computer? There is a label on the bottom.
    2. Which backup application?
    3. Attach a picture of the error message.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Using toshiba canvio hard drive without using time machine

Has anyone used the Toshiba Canvio external hard drive to save files to without using time machine?  I want to move files off of my computer onto the external drive not just duplicate all the files on my computer as a backup.

I guess the external drive is hanging off the Mac..
Getting access to the drive from PC should be possible.. you may need to move public directory onto the external drive and then set up permissions to do it.. I have not done it and simply would not do it.
External hdd are cheap enough buy one for the pc.. That is then formatted NTFS which windows is going to natively read.. this will be much easier if the backups are ever required than to use HFS+ formatted disk hanging off the Mac.
You can also get your dead TC fixed.

PLEASE HELP. I beg all the geniuses on this community.
    Thanks

I see this posting is pretty old but here's my experience, for what is worth.
I bought today a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 1Tb and I have both PC and Mac at home.
For 90 $ at Radio Shack I thought it is a good deal although it did not say on the box very much.
It was formatted NTFS and had some software on it as well as a manual.
I tried to mount it first on my Mac OS 10.7.4.
Without any drivers and with it's own cable it worked at first attempt.
I could copy some music to it and it just worked fine, I could play it.
Then I read the instructions and it says you must install the Tuxera NTFS driver supplied on Canvio to work read/write otherwise will be read-only.
Once I did that I attempted to copy and it shown some activity. Then I decided to reboot as indicated by Tuxera software and after that it only mounted in read-only mode. I tried to deactivate Tuxera, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reinstall, reboot again, nothing helped. The Toshiba web site did not help at all.
Eventually I thought to try reformatting it and use it with HFS+. I copied all original content somewhere on my Mac for backup then started Disk Utility and opening the Canvio I noticed it offers a format option as Win NT NTFS Tuxera, which I thought to try and that worked indeed. Then I copied the original content back on the newly formatted partition. I can use it perfectly fine on my Windows 7 as well as Mac. It works pretty fast.

  • Toshiba Canvio 1.5TB Portable Hard Drive Blue Light just keeps blinking

I have a Toshiba Canvio HDTC615XK3B1 1.5TB Portable Hard Drive and its been working fine so far. This morning I tried to access some files and when I plugged it in, the harddrive made the usual virbation but the blue light goes from solid to rapidly blinking. My computer (macbook) doesnt recognize it either. Ive tried it on multiple computers too. Please help!!!

Unfortunately, the drive might might be failing unfortunately, especially considering it's not working on multiple computers. You could try to reformat it, but that would cause you to lose your data. Alternatively, you could make a warranty claim.
