Toshiba external drive stopped working

Hi,
I purchased maybe 4-6 months ago a Toshiba E05A100SBU3EW_C STOR.E ART 4 1TB USB 3.0 2.5 inch Hard Drive - Black from amazon and one day it just suddenly stopped working and I was wondering if any one knew how to get it working again on my mac or windows machine, please as it has a lot of important data

it makes no sounds or noises on my mac but when I plug it into my windows machine it does make a noise but then there is nothing in my computer and it will not recognise the device at all

After resuming from sleep, external drive stopped working, won't mount!

I put my mini to sleep, and have a 750GB SATA drive in an external enclosure that I had connected to it. The drive enclosure has it's own power which stayed on. When I clicked the power button on the mini to wake it up, I got a "device removal" error telling me the device was not put away properly. Since then I can't get my drive to mount. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and reconnecting everything. It won't even show up in disk utility. I also have MacDrive on my PC, and tried connecting it via FireWire 800 and USB, and it won't show up on my PC either.
PLEASE HELP! I need this drive for work and I'm stuck until I can get it working again. Thanks!

No. Powering off and on again didn't work. My drive is a Seagate 750GB internal SATA drive in a Vantec NexStar-3 external enclosure. I don't think it is a driver issue. After the device removal error it won't mount on my PC or my Mac via FireWire or USB.
What I need to know is if there is some way to connect to the drive and make it mount with other software, using some kind of keystroke during startup, or maybe through terminal or something. I can't even try to repair the drive because it won't show up in disk utility.

Time Machine Backup on External Drive Stops working after one week

I'm having a problem with the Time machine backup on an external LaCie drive. After e few days, it suddenly locks up, not performing any backup unless I force-restart my computer and switch off the drive.
*My setup*:
- iMac Alu 24 with MacOS X 10.5.1 and 3Gb RAM
- LaCie external drive 320 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> this is the one used for the bakcups, it is left powered on at any time (never switched off)
- 2 other LaCie external drives 160 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> they are generally switched off
TimeMachine is setup to its default scenario, backing up automatically on the external 320 Gb.
*Daily usage* :
- the iMac is set to boot automatically at 6:45
- I usually switch it off manualy at the end of the day
- Screen Saver is set to launch after 5 minutes
- sleep time for computer is set to 1:30 hour
- display sleep 15 min
- hard disk are set to sleep whenever possible
First symptom : the computer never goes to sleep
Second symptom : I had the following problem already twice since I installed Leopard, once with the original install and today with the updated 10.5.1 version:
- automatic backups went fine during the whole day : 7:45 8:45 9:45...
- then an automatic backup starts but never finishes

Why would Lacie external drive stop working?

My iMac has a Lacie used for TMachine but now it doesnt appear on desktop, Disk Utility and About This Area. The external power unit and USB cable look good too.
Any idea of the cause (or guess)

If you get a SATA USB drive cable kit adapter, you can get the HDD out of the enclosure
& attach the wires (plugs) into the drive to see if you can recover files directly; these kits
usually have their own power supply if to be used with 3.5" HDDs; while there are kits
for 2.5" HDDs that presume port-power is adequate.
Most computer stores have something along this line; be sure to ask of their return policy just in case it doesn't work, or is the wrong kit.
Hopefully you can get the goods outta it.

My external drive stopped working on Time capsule

Hello,
I installed a 1.5 TB drive on my Time Capsule about 6 months ago. It has been working fine till the other day. The drive works OK when connected directly to my mac, but on the time capsule it works for a long time backing up then says:
The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up . if the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
The problem started when I entered Time Machine to recover some files. I discovered the files were not being backed up so I quit Time Machine. The next time TM tried to back up, it reported that it could not back up because someone else was using the volume. The TC volume was still mounted and I could not eject it. I have seen this happen before, and have not had much luck using 'lsof' to identify the culprit, so I started quitting applications 1 or 2 at a time, and every hour TM would report that the volume was still being used. Finally I had quit all applications and logged out and logged back in again, and the volume was still there, so I restarted.
I would have thought that would have fixed the problem, but then the other problem started --- it would try to back up and near the end of the process, report the error. Finally I removed the drive from the TC, hooked it up to my macbook and ran Disk Utility, which reported it was fixing a minor problem in a header.
I moved the drive back to the TC and the error persisted. I moved the drive back to my mac and ran Time Machine. It didn't recognize that it was connected to the same volume, so it annoyingly did a full backup, consuming another 200GB of my backup drive. But it worked, and it continued to work every hour till I disconnected it and hooked it up to the TC and started getting the same error again. Why would TM work OK with the same drive on the mac and not the TC?
Any help to resolve this would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks very much. This is a great resource. The log file showed problems with a git object so I excluded the subdirectory, and the backup finally succeeded. It then proceeded to check the whole archive, I guess, bit by bit. The TM status said "Finishing backup..." with lots of network traffic for about 10 hours!! I just let it go and it finally finished.
I attached the drive to my computer again and deleted the extra backup that it had done.
Don't know what if anything was wrong with that file (actually the log complained about a number of files in that directory). I checked my disk with DU and it reported no problems. I have subsequently cloned that git repo several times and the OS has no trouble copying those files.

External Drive Stopped Working

Hi all,
I have an external USB Freecom drive which is self powered - until now it has been mounting with no difficulties but for the last two days it is not mounting at all - I see nothing under /Volumes. I have tried it in both USB ports to no avail. The drive is on as I hear it start up as usual and it makes the normal noises that I am used to but OS X fails to pick it up. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or how to resolve it?

Does it have an external power supply port? Use it. Test it on another computer. Test a different USB device on your computer. Do some sort of elementary troubleshooting.
If you have access to a two ended USB cable you can try that as well so it takes power from both ports or try a powered USB hub but the power supply option is a good place to start.
Next drive you buy get a bus powered firewire drive and in addition to less hassle it will actually perfrom well as USB drives really don't.

How can I interchange a Toshiba external drive with my Mac and Windows? It only works read only with the Mac.

I bought a Toshiba external drive IT and I can copy files to it from my Macbook Pro 5,3. I would like to know how canI interchange files with Windows and the Mac.

If the disk is read only, it is formatted for Windows and the Mac can't write to it
Reformat to FAT32
This will of course wipe all data so move it first

I have a Western Digital 500GB Studio Edition. The drive works fine with transferring small amounts of data (a few GBs), but when I try to use Time Machine to back my whole computer up (~70GB), at some point the drive stops responding. There is no pattern as to where when it stops working, it could be 17kb, it could be 69BG, but I have never been able to complete a backup.
What happens is that after a certian amount of time, the drive just stops responding. The "Ready light" is on, as if it is just waiting for me to use it, and Time Machine thinks it is still backing up, but its not. This also happens outside of Time Machine, if I just have the drive running for a while, the drive stops working. This is also accompanied by Finder freezing up until I unplug the drive. Sometimes (but not every time) I also have to unplug the drive from the outlet in order to get it to respond again.
This may be unrelated, but I am using Firewire 800, which, as I understand, should be able to transmit data at 800MB/s, but it is dramatically less than that. Again, the speed varies, but it is usually around just a few MB per second. I understand that this vary with the drive and computer, but I think that a year old drive/MBP should be able to transfer data close to 800MB/s.
I have a windows partition, and I experienced the same problems, especially when playing game stored on the drive. I recently got an eSATA ExpressCard, but unfortunately the drivers are only available for Windows. I haven't had any problems with the drive not responding since I have been using the ExpressCard, and data transfers have been very fast (again, not sure how fast, but games now run like they did on my internal hard drive).
I made sure my drivers were updated, I even installed the "WD Turbo Drivers". The Partition Map Scheme is GUID Partition Table. Under Energy Settings in System Preferences, I unchecked the box "Put the Hard Disk to sleep when possible".
I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem in the forums, or elsewhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

FW800 has a theoretical limit of 800 mb/s - that's mega bits (not bytes). The firewire bridge chip and hard drive's ability to spool do not usually even come close to that theoretical limit.
Still it sounds like your hard drive is not working. I'd get everything off it, reformat it and start over.
The reality of the situation is your mybook is not designed for video editing. I guess they do back ups fine but not much else. Your best path would be to either a) get an external hard drive designed to be used for editig - Caldigit, granite digital, etc or, if your computer suppports them, populate your internal bays with sata drives and use those as media drives.

CD drive stopped working on my Satellite L

MY CD drive stopped working, but then it recognised a disc which I had inserted, but then stopped working again.
I have deleted upper and low filters from device manager.
I have also downloaded the dvd ram driver from toshiba and my cd drive then worked, but after I closed down the computer, again it would not recognise discs in the drive.
I again downloaded the driver and it then recognised the disc I inserted into the drive.
However, now my computer will not recognise the drive even when I again download the driver.
Does anyone know why it would work intermittently or have any ideas that might help.

Is ODD recognized properly in device manager?
Which disc do you use?
Do you have this problem using only this one disc?

-test with different discs

External mic stopped working on my laptop

I was in the middle of recording music and then the external microphone stopped working, this is the first time it has done this. And yes I have it plugged into the right jack I also have checked to make sure that it is unmuted, I thought that maybe somehow the driver unistalled itself so I got another driver and still nothing. But to be honest I have no idead what I am doing here people so please any help will be greatly appreciated.

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
Reset the NVRAM.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

Windows accelorator driver stopped working

Every now and again I have a message which comes up saying Windows accelorator driver stopped working for Windows XP and has recovered. I have Windows 7 home premium so why would this message keep appearing every so often.

Is there any text before "windows acc...." in the error message? From the information supplied I would guess you are running W7 32bit and you've either upgraded from XP or you have loaded an XP grahics driver - I've only seen that sort of message from video drivers. I would check that either an updated Toshiba driver or a "WHQL" certified laptop driver is available from the graphics chipset's web site.

Portege R500 - Toshiba Flashcard has stopped working

Its not easy to say what causes this issue.
In most cases some other software parts could affect the functionality of different applications.
For example my flash card stopped working after Vista has ran some updates.
I have simply removed the old VAP (value added package) from the system.
I cleaned registry and system using the CCleaner (free tool) and then reinstalled the VAP again.
Now everything is running properly.
I think you should try the same too.
Remove the VAP and install the new VAP downloaded from the Toshiba European driver page.

How do I restore write permission to my Toshiba external drive?

My Toshiba external drive has been working fine up until yesterday. I was importing pictures into my iphoto library (on the drive) when my MacBook Air froze up. I gave it overnight to finish processing, but did a hard shutdown this morning because it still wasn't responding. When I restarted it, my external drive said that it is now read only (so iphoto won't even opoen that library). I have searched the web for answers and read about a potential solution in Disk Utility to Restore Permissions. However, none of the buttons in the first aid tab of disk utilities are selectable for me inluding the verify and restore options. The info for the disk shows that it is formated as NTFS. I can't recallI if I installed the NTFS for Mac when I first set up the drive, so I tried intalling it now to no avail.
One of the main reasons we got a Mac was for picture management. It's been 4 months and I have yet to get all of our pictures loaded into iphoto. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

An NTFS volume is not natively writable in OS X, so if you were writing to it, you must have installed a third-party system modification that is no longer working. You would have to update it, reinstall it, or refer to its developer for support.
However, even with the modification, iPhoto will not work reliably unless the library is stored on a volume in Mac OS format.

External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.
