Toshiba external hard drive is not seen by my time capsule

I am trying to connect an external hard drive to my time capsule, I am doing this with other hard drives and it work perfectly, but I just got a toshiba 1,5 tb drive with external power supply and my time capsule simply ignore it, it is not shown in the disk part of the airport setup screen, if I connect one of my other external drives it does show both in finder and in the airport set up screen.
I have tried to format the drive in all the different ways I could, as I read that if the partition map scheme is master boot record it may have problems, and if the drive is not formatted as either fat32 or mac OS extended it will not show. no matter what I am doing it still is not picked up by the time capsule when I plug it in.
it work perfectly if I plug it directly into my macbook. I have truly run out of ideas. I actually have two identical toshiba drives so I tried the other one to be sure it was no a problem on the first drive, but it act in the exact same manner. I tried to look at some of the hidden files, but not being a computer expert it did not make much sence to me.
please somebody help out here.

Hi Bob,
I would like it to appear along with the time capsule it self under shared, so when I click on the time capsule I would see two drives the time capsule and right below or above the hard drive. and I would like to be able to see it in the airport utility under disks under the time capsule in the drive screen, but the drive is not visible in either locations.
yes I have read many places that the drive need external power supply, as this drive is quite large 1,5 tb I did take one with external power supply. I do however have two other drives one 500 gb and one 750 gb without external power supply and they both work perfectly on my time capsule "plug and play" like it is supposed to, funny enough one of these drives do have the partition master scheme as master boot record even as I have seen several discussions where it is stated this would not work. on these new drives I have tried with the three different partition master schemes I have tried with mac OS extended formatting as well as FAT 32 formatting, I even formatted the drives on a windows machine to see. but it still do not appear when it is connected to my time capsule. Before my time capsule get the blame for this I have to add that I have tried on two other time capsules - though in other environments - with the same result.
so please any new idea is very appreciated.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

  • My toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it. I have the preferences checked to show icon and have checked utilities folder. nothing. Help!

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • What would be a faster backup solution, a thunderbolt adapter to a separate external hard drive or a 802.11ac Airport Time Capsule?

What would be a faster backup solution, a thunderbolt adapter to a separate external hard drive or an 802.11ac Airport Time Capsule? Does not need to be easier to backup just faster.

    Thunderbolt by a blazing mile.
Even using gigabit on the TC instead of wireless will not come anywhere near as fast as the thunderbolt.
Let me add though.. hard disk speed might make the difference rather less great. Thunderbolt is so fast the hard disks are left behind.. so the speed is always going to be dependent on speed of drives.. the TC on the other hand is processor bound.. it uses a slow drive since the fact is, a super fast SSD will go no faster.. whereas with thunderbolt and a decent box that can use the power of ssd, it will be as fast as internal SSD on the computer.

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • Can I regard a time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?, Can I regard a time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?

Can I just regard a time capsule as a wireless external drive? I don't think I need time machine to back up, I just want more space to store my files (music, moves, photos). To save the space on my Mac, can I move those things to TC, and open them(watch movies, photos and listen to music) directly?
And, if I bootcamp windows 8 os, can I still share/use the stuff on the TC, like a regular(wireless) external hard drive?

Apple says specifically not to move iphoto to network drive.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

  • How can I backup an external hard drive connected to my mac with time capsule?

The hard drive on my IMac is 500GBytes.  It is just about full.  I have purchased an additional drive to attach to it permanently through the Firewire 800 interface.  My plan is to move my photographs and iTunes to the attached drive.  I currently use 2TB time capsule to backup my hard drive. Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
    Thanks,
    Herb

Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
I assume that you are asking about Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule here, correct?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Here, you will see list of items that are excluded from backups. By default, the hard drive attached to your Mac will appear here.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button to remove the drive from the list of items that are excluded from backups
Now, the drive will be backed up along with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes, and any changes that you make to the hard drive will be backed up as well in the future.

My laptop is Macbook Pro and I used to use an external hard disk, which used to work fine with me. However, over the last week, the Mac system started not to recognize the hard disk and accordingly does not see it.

  • How to set up a Toshiba external hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

    Hi there,
I just bought a Toshiba external hard drive that says on the package it is compatible with Macs. I plugged it in, installed the Pogoplug PC for Mac (no idea what this is) and Tuxera NTFS for Mac (it was in the "Mac Driver" folder). Now what? Is my data now automatically going onto the hard drive? Do I need to install anything else? This seems too easy! What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

New hard drives out of box should be formatted for your Mac
go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format"
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
There is no such thing as a MAC or PC hard drive,.....they can all be formatted as you wish for either PC or Mac (or both)
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

    natgray17 wrote:
I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

  • HT1338 I bought my macbook pro november 2011 and I still cannot use my toshiba external hard drive.  what updates do i need to get?

I don't know my operating system.  I bought it in nov of 2011.  I am trying to axcess a toshiba external hard drive.  what new update do I need to get?

You can find out your current system version by select About This Mac from the Apple menu.  To make sure it is updated, select Software Update from the Apple menu.  A Mac from Nov. 2011 is probably running "Lion," and the latest version of Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.4.
But that should not affect the connection of an external hard drive.  There are no special updates for connecting standard external drives.
Does the external Toshiba drive connect by USB port?  Is it the smaller type that gets power from the port (no conection except for the one cable), or is it larger (with its own power supply)?

  • External hard drive does not shut down

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.

  • I have a Toshiba external hard drive that i used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I want to transfer files to my new Mac and it won't accept. Help?

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I am not able to get the files off of it (pictures) onto the Mac. I am NOT a very technical person. IS there a simple easy way to explain and do this -- OR a simple way to just say it is not possible?

If you connect the external hard drive to your Mac does it show up in the Finder? If so, do the files you are trying to transfer show up? What happens when you try to move them over?
What kind of Mac are you using and what operating system does it have running on it?
Let us know, we'll keep helping you.

  • What to do? coudn't open my toshiba external hard drive that I can open before

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I've been using without any problems before I upgraded my OS to Mavericks...Now I couldn't find the drive anymore but it seems that my mac detects it but it just is not opening it anymore...couldn't find it in my finder window....Anyone who knows how to fix this? Thanks.

Have you reset power on both the Mac and hard drive?
From time to time, during sleep/wake cycles, my network attached drive wouldn't show up in my Fiinder. When I would click to Connection, they would come up grayed out. Cycling power on the Mac didn't really help much. But cycling power on the hard drive unit did.

Maverick wont recognize my toshiba external hard drive. Two days ago, before attaining Maverick (what a mistaaake), it recognized the external. Now it only recognizes other external hard drives, but not my toshiba. All my music is locked away
    Thanks for your time...

Once I press mount it says:
The disk "TOSHIBA EXT" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I have a very valuble music collection on this. I got it around a week ago and it hasn't been acting the same since Maverick. I'm just hoping the problem IS maverick here. But it must be.... Because Maverick won't even recognize my brookstone mini projector. I really appreciate the help, what should I do from here?
