Toshiba External HD Still Read Only after Installing Tuxera

I recently purchased a Toshiba 1TB external hard drive.  I need to be able to move files from my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard to my older Windows XP computer.  Since I need both computers to be able to read and write to this external I installed Tuxera which I understood would allow me to move files between the two systems.  I managed to get one folder to start copying to the HD from the Mac but it stopped before finishing and gave me an error message saying it was not properly ejected. (I think I moved it slightly and the plug moved just a little).  I am now undable to copy any files to the HD and it shows that it is Read Only.  I tried going into disk utility to change this but all options are lite grey and unselectable.  I also tried doing a chkdsk /f on this unit by using my windows system.  It ran tough and seemed to be fine.  Any ideas?  This is driving me nuts!  My soul porpose of using this Toshiba unit is to copy photos and music files to be used by or moved to both systems.  Thank you!

  • Read only after install [SOLVED -- systemd related]

Anyone know why a new (booted ~2-3 times) install would suddenly mount read-only?  /etc/fstab is fine, /etc/mtab reports rootfs / as rw, and I am logged in as root, but I get "read-only filesystem", hence there are no logs, etc.

Nope.   I have a startup service I use on fedora, and since the target I usually use wasn't apparent, I casually systemctl enabled it with WantedBy=local-fs.target, figuring if that was too early it would just fail (it writes to to disk).
Using "mount -o remount,rw /" worked, so I tried a few things like switching fstab to use a UUID instead of a device node, that didn't work.  Finally I disabled the service and everything is back to normal.
I did this a couple of times (enabling, rebooting, disabling, rebooting) just to confirm that was the cause. I guess that target runs before the rw remount, maybe this causes systemd to crap out in some way.  Shame it can't just fail the service, log it, and continue.  Maybe even an oversight verging on "bug", though I am sure they are aware of it already.
I'd mark this "SOLVED" but I don't see a button...

  • All valid disks are read-only after installing UJ-835 firmware update

    Hello everyone,
I've just installed the firmware update for my SuperDrive. When I insert a DVD that is blank and writeable, my PowerBook does not ask me to prepare for a Burn as it used to.
When viewing in Disk Utility, the DVD is marked as non-writeable. In an iMac, the Finder will ask if I want to prepare for a burn when I insert the same blank DVD.
I tried other disks of other brands, yet the same problem. The disks are fine on the other Macintosh. The disks should be blank.
What can I do? How do I back out the firmware update?
    Thanks in advance!!

    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Originally, I was trying to burn with Maxell DVD+R disc. I have since tried Verbatim DVD-R and Kodak DVD-R. All DVDs do not appear in the finder, I cannot use my SuperDrive to back up to DVD! When I insert the DVD, the SuperDrive spins up, then down and then nothing happens.
I am able to back up limited bits onto CDs, they seem to work ok.
Anyone have any advice? How do I pull the firmware update out? Will a System Restore do the trick?

  • External drive now Read Only? Can't change after Lion installed.

I have several extenal drives attached. One has two partitions. One of the partitions is used as a SuperDuper Backup drive. SuperDuper couldln't find it now that I upgraded to Lion. I found that all my drives were changed to "Read Only" after the Lion update. I changed them back to "Read/Write" without a problem expect for the SD partition. It doesn't let me change from Read Only. Any ideas on correcting this?  Thanks.

Select that partition. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom see if there is a checkbox labeled, "Ignore permissions on this volume." If the box is checked then first uncheck the box. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. Enter the following at the prompt:
    sudo chown root:admin
Place a space after "admin" then drag the Desktop icon of the partition into the Terminal window. Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted (it will not be echoed) and press RETURN again.

  • External drive goes read only with error -50 after time

Running the special release of 10.8.2 for Mac Mini (2012) that was recently released.  I have two external USB drives.  The first contains my iTunes collection and the second is my time machine backup disk.  The iTunes drive seems to go read only after it's been mounted awhile.  I can read files off the drive, but I can't make any changes.  I can't delete files nor edit them.
If I try to do anything with the disk including a repair permissions or disk on it, I get an error -50.   The only way to get out of this state is to unmount the drive and remount it forcibly or reboot.
Anyone have ideas on what is going on or experienced a similar issue?

I did a little more research and there are quite a few people who've seen this error.  I don't think it's the drive.
I suspect the controller in the enclosure, a jmicron 0x2336, is responsible for my problems.  It looks like Linux and FreeBSD both had software updates to work around bugs in the controller.  If OS X did not get updated, it would explain everything. The drive sleeps and then won't wake up fully and OS X marks it as in error and goes read only.
The enclosure is a Thermaltake Silver II USB + esata.  It looks like a lot of people have had similar problems with them.  I saw posts on macrumors, adobe's support forums, etc.

Have you formatted it for Mac using Disk Utility?
If not, open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder) and select the drive to the left. Make sure that you select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and then the erase button.
If you have already formatted the drive, call back...

  • How to attach an external USB drive read-only

I would like to hook up an external USB hard drive and would like to do so in such a manner as to ensure that absolutely nothing is modified on the drive at all. Is there some way I can specify this before I connect the drive or while I plug it in? (e.g. hold down the shift key or something like that.) I have found all sorts of posts from folks who wanted to know how to turn off read-only mode, but haven't had much luck finding out how to turn it on.
I noticed recently when I plugged in a USB stick that it sat and blinked for some time. I'm guessing that OS X was busy indexing the drive. I'm not sure if the index was written back to the USB stick, or cached somewhere locally. If it was written back to the USB stick, I would like to prevent this from happening when I plug in a real drive.
Thanks for any tips you can give me.
    --wpd

If the drive is formatted NTFS, it will automatically mount read-only. If it is formatted HFS+ or FAT, I don't know of any way to external drives to mount read-only without installing OS X Server for $500.

  • External keypad won't work after installing OS 7.

External keypad won't work after installing OS 7. I have a "Zagg" keyboard that won't pair now to OS 7,...Why?

They do work. I have one and mine is working. Have you tried to reset your iPad? HOlding down teh sleep and home keys until it reboots then try pairing again.
A slightly more drastic thing is to go into the settings and reset all settings. THe downside, you will need to retweak your device but it can help fix keyboard glitches.

  • External hard drive read-only?

Just got a Macbook Pro last week and I have found that my external drive is read-only, where it used to work perfectly on my old Windows laptop.
I can assume that the drive is formatted as NTFS from reading other posts, and that I must format it as FAT32 (I believe), but in the Disc Utility I do not see this option.
Can someone aid with this slight problem? I seem to be heading in the right direction as I'm not too keen on using third-party applications to enable writing.
Additionally, sometimes the drive will not connect (light stays red) but I assume that this is possibly related to the formatting issue at hand. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

It is FAT32.  For some reason, OS X refers to it just as "FAT".
As AussieDJ indicated, you can use NTFS 3G.  This allows your Mac to write to NTFS formatted drives.  I personally have used this for quite a while and have never had issues.  I have seen some posts from people saying it can be problematic.  As I have never had a problem, I can't say specifically what issues might arise.  Apple does offer it directly on their download pages:

  • Make a field required on record creation, read only after that

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a way to make a pick-list field required on record creation, but read-only after that? The other twist to this is that we need to allow this field to also be read-write for all the integration edits, since this field's value could change in the enterprise database.
    Thanks,
    Neal G.

    Hi !
I think you can add a validation rule for that. Something like :
    IIf(PRE('<YOURFIELD>') IS NULL, <> '', = PRE('<YOURFIELD>'))
This means that if the previous value of your field is null (it's a creation), so the value must be different than blank. Else, it must be equal to the previous value, so not modified.
I didn't tested it, but I let you get back to me if it works... or not !
You'll just have to add a message saying that this field is required on creation and readonly after...
Hope this will help, feel free to ask more !

  • Word 2010 document becomes Read-Only after saving it

    Hi,
My Word 2010 document is becoming "Read Only" after saving it, for information my doucment is on the desktop . I searched on this forum and find a couple of solutions (deactivating auto saving, etc.) but it does not work at all. Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sylvain.

, I wonder why the docuemnt is becoming Read-Only when I am saving it on the Desktop...
I've read articles and blogs of people arguing each side of whether you should use the Desktop as a storage folder and I really
don't have anything substantial to add to either the pro or con side of the issue.
However, what I know about Word is that it behaves a bit different and seems to have issues when you’re actively editing document that are stored
on the Desktop.  I would speculate that the issue has something to do with the screen driver software.
When you’re editing a document, Word is actually using something like a dozen or more temporary hidden files and some of these are stored in the
same folder as the source document. If the source document’s folder is the Desktop, then there has to be interaction with the screen driver.
This interaction with the screen driver is one variable that makes the Desktop folder unique and possibly problematic and thus Word under certain conditions
    makes the file Read Only.

  • How to make fields read only after form is filled in

I am creating forms to be used within our company.  The customer srv representative (CSR) would fill in the form and send it to the customer for signature and initial.  There are a few issues I can't solve.
    1)  I need to make the rate & services fields read only after the CSR initials the form

Will the CSR have Acrobat or just Reader, and what type of computer will the CSR be using (Windows/Mac/mobile OS)? If just Reader (Wind/Mac), this is possible by setting the fields to read-only with JavaScript. The problem is this can't be considered secure, even if using a password as discussed here: Password-protect and hide one form field
With Acrobat you have the ability to flatten certain fields, which makes it a bit more difficult to change the "fields".

    ONLY.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    Dear Regina,
Have you tried to set_block_property in pre-record trigger to update allowed/not allowed depending on the event. And in post-record update not allowed. These triggers must be on block level. Also on item level to the item 'Comment' define pre-item trigger where take a new decision whether you want to open the entire block or not, the same way as on block level triggers. But in post-item trigger always make the entire block read-only again.
