Toshiba L855-S5113: Backlit Keyboard Upgrade

Greetings!  I have a Toshiba Satellite L855-S5113 and would like to upgrade the keyboard to a backlit keyboard.  Does anyone here have experience performing this modification? I found a backlit keyboard for my laptop however, there is an additional 4 contact ribbon cable attached to the keyboard.  I removed my keyboard and I could not find an additional 4 contact connection point on the mobo.  I discovered the touchpad ribbon cable has 4 contacts.  I don't use the touchpad or buttons since I use a wireless mouse so I am thinking I can disconnect the touchpad ribbon cable and connect the new backlit keyboard ribbon cable to the touchpad connection point on the mobo. If this works and I have power for illumination, will I need to change BIOS or update a driver or both? Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help, Travisimo

i have found the way to light my keyboard.
its a hardware mod(kind of). the backlit keyboard has 2 ffc cable, one, the standard with a lot of pins, to transmit data to the motherboard, and another one narrower (just 4 pins) for ilumination
backlit doesnt work if i connect it to its port, but there are three more port of this kind so i test them.
there are two verey close at the left side and another near the standard keyboard connector.
the 2 from the left side, give little voltage and the bright of the backlit is very poor. the other one near the keyboard standard connector (i can read kskaa intel near it) give enough voltage, and oh yeah! it light my keyboard, but its too far for connect the two cables of the keyboard.
also, i have to disconnect a 4 pin ffc cable to do this, but the laptop worked just fine while i was testing this.
so maybe i will buy a 4pin ffc cable to connect to this port the backlit cable.
btw it would be awesome if you guys could help me to activate the voltage in the backlit port.
i have the feeling that it works, due to if i connect to the backlit port the backlit cable, in control panel\device manager\ appear a unlnow device which windows cant find the correct driver.
i have another question.
im using windows 7 ultimate (genuine, a present from mr Steve Ballmer ;P ) 32 bits... could be possible that in 64 bits the backlit would be correctly managed?
thanks in advance

  • Upgrade to backlit keyboard?

I have the 2 GHz aluminum unibody macbook... I really regret not buying the more expensive model now that I see how often I would use the backlit keyboard.
After some Googling, I found http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Unibody-Upper-Case-Backlit/IF160-001 and it says "This upper case is fully compatible with the non-backlit models and will provide backlight capabilities."
Obviously, I don't want to DIY because I'm afraid I would break the laptop/void the warranty, but would Apple upgrade this for me? (Even if I have to pay extra $$$?)

If I took it to a Genius Bar and offered to pay for the upgrade (part/labor) even though it's under Applecare they wouldn't do it?
From what I understand, they don't do upgrades save the rather trivial memory installation (at very high prices compared to doing so yourself). They're primarily devoted to handling warranty/AppleCare concerns. They also install replacement batteries.
Really - your best route to this upgrade is to have an Apple Authorized Service Provider do this for you. They typically handle upgrades as well as warranty service. They will do a lot of the services that the Apple Store won't do and your warranty status is not at risk if they make a mistake. There are many in your immediate area.

    Hello ElyMayor,
I understand you would like to upgrade both your Dv7’s to have backlit keyboards, is that accurate? I will assist you with finding the necessary information.
Neither laptop has the chance to be upgraded with a backlit keyboard. Checking the services guides for both computers, they do not show the keyboard available. Also looked at the HP PartSurfer and the parts were not available there as well.
When upgrading the keyboard the motherboard as to have the additional plug specifically for the backlit keyboard. Normally that connection is right next to the main connection the keyboard plugs into.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Can I use backlit keyboard with my Satellite C660-2D7?

    Hi all,
wondering if there is such a thing as a backlit keyboard that can be fitted to the Satellite C660-2D7 , the old one is very easy to remove.

  • Satellite P750-13F - How to enable backlit keyboard on Windows 8

    Hello!
today i installed Windows 8 premium on my P750-13F, which has a backlit keyboard. In order to upgrade to Windows 8 I had to uninstall some Toshiba drivers and other programs.
Now I have Windows 8 fully functional, but I don't know how to access to the FN button functions (Screen brightness, wifi on/off, volume up/down).
Now that that FN-button is innoperative the function that I miss the most is the one for keyboard illumination, because I can still do everything else by some other ways (I mean volume up/down, screen brightness etc.) but i don't know how to illuminate the keyboard now.
I tried installing Toshiba Hardware Setup Utility, but it won't install with Windows 8. I don't really care much if the FN-button remains innoperative (although it would be nice if it wouldn't) but what I really want is to be able to change the keyboard illumination.
I will be very thankfull for any ideas.

Toshiba need time to prepare and test the Windows 8 drivers so you need to wait a while.
    Update drivers "Coming soon."

You need the Toshiba Value Added Package for Win8 & P750, and possibly the Flashcards support utility as well.

I bought my Satellite P50-A-12Z over a year ago, and since few weeks the backlit keyboard has stopped working.
I used to hold FN+W to turn on/off the light keyboard, but now it doesn't work anymore and I have the message "chronometer" on the top right of the screen as you can see on this screenshot:

    Hi
I don't know if this will help but try please following: perform complete shutdown - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03EY0002R01.htm
Start notebook again and press F12. There you should find option to enter BIOS settings. Enter BIOS settings and try to enable keyboard backlight there.

  • Backlit keyboard no longer working.

I just recently upgraded my 2010 macbook pro RAM. I went from 4gb to 6gb and now my backlit keyboard is no longer working. I have tried messing with the keyboard settings as well as the F5 and F6 buttons. The keyboard does not even come on in low lit conditions. Why is my backlit keyboard no longer working?

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Can I Replace a Keyboard(Non-Backlit) with a Backlit Keyboard in my HP Pavilion 17-e119wm Laptop?

Hey guys, my name is Armando
I bought this laptop back in April -->http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Anodized-Silver-17.3-Pavilion-17-e119wm-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-A10-5750M-Qu...
cause my old HP laptop had too many problems. Anyway I was wondering if this laptop in the link can change its regular keyboard for a LED backlit keyboard instead cause I usually find my self using it in the dark most of the time and the keyboard gets hard to see in the dark. So I was wondering if you guys would know if it can be upgraded. ( it would be helpful for me playing games on Steam in the night)

    Hi
    No Armando.
There is no ZIF connector for it in the board, so basically you've to change the whole motherboard & I don't see any compatible boards with that function.

  • Satellite A500 PSAM3A - Can I install a backlit keyboard?

    Hello,
i have a Toshiba Satellite A500 laptop with the following numbers i can find: P7350 part number PSAM3A-04200E serial number- 79365650K.
I would like to install a backlit keyboard onto it,
    Is this model compatible?"

    Hi
Satellite A500 PSAM3A-04200E seems to belong to Toshiba Australian notebook series.
In order to use a backlit keyboard, the motherboard needs to provide a special connector/port for keyboard illumination cable.
You could get some details from a Toshiba ASP in Australia

But I found some parts retailer and many of them provides keyboards W/O BACKLIGHT

  • Keyboard upgrade for iBooks????

I have a G4 iBook and want to upgrade to a powerbook backlite keyboard or a smoke grey or black keyboard (for the TI powerbooks) is this possible, is it just a simple swap? ant info would be good...
    Thanks

The 12' PowerBook an all iBooks are supposed to be cheap or "budget" portables. To keep this possible Apple probably decided it would be less cost effective to put a backlit keyboard in these models. And left it out to keep the price down. If you want you could try putting in your own fibre-optics. It would be a challenge and would void the warranty. But hey what fun...

  • Toshiba Satellite S70-B - Keyboard backlight not working?

Hello, I purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite S70-B laptop with Windows 8 on it. When I received it, I removed the harddrive and installed a SSD with Windows 7 on it. After getting help from Toshiba support, all the drivers and harware seem to work except the backlight keyboard? I spoken to several Toshiba support techs and finally came to the conclusion to send it in to change out the keyboard. Yet I fear if I send it in, they will remove my SSD and reinstall a hardrive with Windows 8 as their solution. Does anyone have other suggestions... ?? Any help is appreciated.

I am having problems with my keyboard backlight too. I spilled water on mine and had to totally take it apart, until then  I never had any problem with the shortcut key turning it on and off. I found this last night. Unfortunately. it didn't work for me Also became disappointed when I searched and searched for that magic timer on my desktop he spoke of. Let me know. 1) Shut down laptop
    2) Turn on and start tapping the F2 button until you get to the BIOS screen
    3) Scroll over to power management and change the setting for your backlit keyboard from off to on.
    4) Press F10 to save and continue to start up.
    5) Enjoy.
Believe it or not, I JUST fixed this issue on my own a665D laptop. I am still tweaking it though because after this, the shortcut keys don't allow you to turn the backlight off so I'm typing on a keyboard who's LED's wont go off as of yet. But this should help for now.--REVISION: I am done "tweaking it" as I have found the answer and it was glaring me in the face. Instead of just turning it to the ON position through BIOS, turn it to TIMER. You can set the amount of time you want it to stay on when ever you press a key and the FN+Z shortcut works when this is set up so you can turn the keyboard on, off, or to follow the timer right from your desktop. I hope this helped.

You are officially awesome. Worked perfectly; I never would have ventured into the BIOS without an exact guide like you gave (Would have blown up the laptop or something lol). But anyway, thanks so much,

  • Dv6-6c35dx installing backlit keyboard

I recently purchased a refurbished dv6-6c35dx and I am very satisfied with the laptop.
I have upgraded the Ram, gotten an extended battery and upgraded to add bluetooth.
The ONLY thing that I am missing to complete it is a backlit keyboard.  I have 2 main questions:
    1.  Does the motherboard on the dv6-6c35dx have the ability to install a backlit keyboard?  And if it doesnt, is there any way around this?
    2.  What is the part # and price?
    Thank You!!!

Bluetooth and a backlit keyboard are two completely different things since Bluetooth is added by just installing a different card into an industry standard slot.
Backlit keybords have a separate connector for the backlight and your motherboard either has the socket for the backlight connector or not.

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Where-can-I-buy-a-backlit-keyboard-for-an-hp-dv6tqe-6...
I would remove the keyboard and look to see if there is another connector which is not currently being used. It would be approximately where the connector for the dv6-3000 backlit keyboard would fall...right next to the zif connector for the bigger ribbon cable...see the picture in the eBay auction.

  • Replacing a standard laptop keyboard with a backlit keyboard ??

Is it possible to obtain a backlit laptop keyboard replacement for a standard laptop keyboard? My computer is not that old but I use it late at night and the backlit keyboard would come in handy. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase an upgrade for this?

    Hi,
Most likely you need few more things than just a keyboard with lights. First thing is you need somewhere to plug cables for lights that means you need a new motherboard and depending on your video card you may need new card, new cooling system ....
    Hope this makes sense.

  • Sat P500-150 Backlit keyboard

    Dear users,
I need to know if the *Toshiba Satellite P500-150* has a backlit keyboard. I called Toshiba and the person at the helpdesk told me that in none of the specifications of the P500 models he could find anything about a backlit keyboard BUT he wasn't sure that information was true. I know this isn't true because there are reviews of the P500 series on youtube which show they have a backlit keyboard. I tried contacting differend dealers but with no results.
Could someone maybe help me with this one?
Thanks in advance and kind regards.

    Hi lirecobe,
I agree with you. Some P500 models are equipped with backlight keyboard.
Unfortunately Keany seems to be right, the specifications on the Toshiba website shows nothing about backlight keyboard on this model. :(
So you should look for other P500 models if you want this feature.
