Toshiba LCD TV as external monitor

Hi there,
my Toshiba 27" LCD TV has a VGA input so I bought the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and connected my Black MacBook to it: turning mirroring off I'm trying to get the best resolution for the LCD TV in order to watch some avi videos and dvd's
With my (now retired...) M$ PC (equipped with an Nvidia card) I was able to set a "custom" resolution to 1280x720 (it should be the native resolution of the LCD panel); is there a way to set such a resolution with the MacBook too, even if it's not listed in the suggested settings of the control panel?

Hello everyone,
I have a current MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Great machine.
I am also running Windows XP via BootCamp for some business applications and games.
I would now like to buy a "Full HD" LCD TV (probably the Samsung LE 40 M 86 BD) and use it as an external monitor for gaming, using a DVI > HDMI cable.
Will this work? I.e.:
+ MacBook Pro (2 GB / 2.2 GHz / GeForce 8600M GT)
+ BootCamp & Windows XP SP2
+ DVI > HDMI Cable
+ Samsung Full HD TV (1920x1080)
+ DirectX 8/9 games (Half-Life 2, Portal, Far Cry etc.)
= Big Screen Gaming?
Or are there pitfalls I am currently not thinking of?
(This is one of those questions where the typical TV dealer / Windows gamer will shrug and say "Yeah. Whatever. Should work. Maybe. Buy everything and try it.")

Thing is, I am trying this too. However, the only option I get is to clone the display. This is not what I want, I want to use the TV as the primary display. This way games will startup on the big TV and not on my Macbook Pro. Now I don't get the option to use that TV as a primary display.
So leaves me with the option to clone the display and have same image rendered on both screens... This is NOT what i want. In Leopard everything works great... obviously...
PLease let me know if you got any solutions for this

Turning Off LCD when on External Monitor - BootCamp and XP OS

Not sure why, but after updating to BootCamp 1.4, the latest Radeon video drivers, and the latest Mac firmware, my MBP no longer shuts off the LCD when hooked up to an external monitor (Samsung 193P on 15 pin analog). Have tried using the CCC program provided by ATI, to no avail. The XP settings also do not seem to make any difference...any thoughts, clues greatly appreciated. Looks like the system sees both the LCD and external as one and the same (listed as monitor one, instead of LCD as one, and external as two).

Why leave it open?
I don't know about the OP, but when I use my MBP for watching movies on my external LCD TV, I know the space above the F keys gets crazy hot. I don't want to risk closing the LCD screen which lays right on top of that furnace, potentially exposing it to damage--especially since movies are around 2 hours in length.
So I'd rather have my lid open when I watching a movie to let the MBP breathe, but I'd rather not see the MBP's screen lit up (distracts from the movie).
That's my personal reasoning.

LCD TV for external monitor?

I have a 20" iMac with FCP 6, and I want to get a LCD TV to use as a second monitor. Since I've never done it before -- i.e. hooking up a second monitor to an iMac, or configured FCP to use one -- I was wondering if anyone has ever done that, and if it would be worth it. I'm considering getting a 32" 720P LG, Sony, or Samsung. It's a lot of money and it'd be good to hear some firsthand experience before I drop a grand on a TV.
A side question would be, the 26, 32, and 37" TVs all have a resolution of 1366x768. At what size does the TV have to blow up the image to fit the screen (which would lower the quality of the image)?
This might not be a good question for a FCP forum, and if so just ignore me. But any thoughts would be helpful.

While I agree that you don't want to rely solely on a consumer LCD TV for any critical evaluation in terms of color/contrast, etc, I do like to see what my output will look like on a typical client owned TV. So here's my setup:
FCP output via Firewire to Sony DSR20 VTR. Analog (S-VHS) out from DSR-20 to an S-VHS distribution amp. S-VHS loop through from the distribution amp goes to a 13" professional color NTSC monitor. First distribution amp output (S-VHS) goes to a Samsung consumer 32" LCD TV. The composite video out of the DSR-20 goes to a 9" professional NTSC monitor which I keep in color-off mode for brightness/contrast evaluation.
The remaining distribution amp outputs go to an old VHS dub rack that I've been meaning to disassemble (someday when I have time), and to a couple of stand-alone DVD recorders.
While editing I have all three monitors on and can make the appropriate determinations.
But equally important and often overlooked is how you monitor audio. For that I'd recommend a decent pair of studio reference or near-field monitors connected to the analog audio outputs of your DV device.

T42 LCD is dark, external monitor sometimes works, Presentation Director seems worthless

On Friday, my LCD went dark. When I looked really hard, I could see all the screens that I'd been working with, but I couldn't bring them to light. If I shut the cover and waited for the machine to suspend itself, then opened the cover, I'd get the LCD back, for 10-15 minutes. Then the LCD would go dark again.
When I connected the T42 to an external screen, the LCD contents appeared on the other screen, and then the the LCD came back. While I had screen(s), I did a bunch of system updates (from Lenovo) and ran PCDoctor several times. Everything checked out.
When I disconnected the external drive, I lost the LCD again. I tried to work with the Presentation Director, but the T42 just doesn't want to obey. The Fn F7 keys are working inconsistently. I am in doctoral student hell, facing (what feel like) already impossible deadlines and I have to get this thing working. Does anybody have any suggestions?

How to connect macbook to both LCD TV & external monitor?

Hi,
I would like to connect my macbook to both my lcd tv and external monitor. However, I only need either the tv or monitor to be on at any one time. Cause when i'm during my work, I need my external monitor. But when I wanna watch movies, I want to watch it only lcd tv.
Any ideas? Is there some sort of switch? I don't want to keep changing the display connections all the time.
I understand there is a usb display connection to the mac but I do not need both the lcd tv and external monitor to be on at the same time.

I have installed arch on my T420 integrated HD 3000 and i have the Problem that when i start arch and the boot messages comes i can see the deamon starts ok,ok,ok who should be on the right side but on the NEC they was displayed 5 cm inside. Also when iam on the console and i type dmesg all the output scroll down and broke 5 cm from the roof. And when iam on openbox and i will maximize one window it would be maximized on the size from the Laptop LCD.

I have connect my ThinkPad per Dockingstation Displayport (I try also DVI) with an NEC PA241W. It seems arch takes the 1600x900 resolution from the Laptop :-(
I dont know what to do makes the Kernel the Problem?

i use my Laptop at home 95% and at work 5%
so my first choice would be to have the perfect resolution on my NEC external and when i opened a window it would display there and i dont have to open my Laptop to move the screen to see it on my external or is it so that you must have opened the laptop display to move the windows?
And when i would take it at work it would be perfect if i see it on the laptop with his resolution 1600x900

2 External Monitors with X130e

I've got a problem.
I have an HP monitor with a VGA output, and a TV with HDMI.
They both work, but not at the same time. I can use one, or the other, but together? Nada. I want to extend my screen to the monitor, and then the TV.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Hello,
The X130e's GPU may only support two simultaneous displays—it's own LCD and one external monitor at a time.
You can try using an USB to VGA (or HDMI) video card, which will plug into one of the X130e's USB ports. This is how I add a third monitor to my ThinkPad T410s at work, and it works well for my uses (apps and web browsing).

Tecra A9 - external Monitor shows stripes when using the Laptop pluged.

I've heard about at least 3 Tecras A9 witch produces stripes on the external Monitor only when the Laptop is pluged. When using the Laptop with the battery, the Monitor works just fine. they tried to divide the cables of the Monitor and the power supply as far as possible, but still the same problem. When using the Laptop with a non-toshiba-AC Adaptor, the external Monitor is working fine.

In my opinion you should visit nearest authorized Toshiba service provider. They can connect your Tecra to external monitors and test it. If the result is the same I am pretty sure you will get AC adapter replacement for free.
Do not wait and discuss for days here. Contact them and I hope they will help you.

T43 w/ Port Rep II - Dual External Monitor Setup

Hi,
I have a T43 with the ATI chipset. I am running it in a dual monitor configuration with the laptop LCD and an external monitor connected to the docking station. I would like to use 2 external monitors via the docking station's VGA and DVI connectors but I can't figure out how to get the system to switch from the laptop LCD to the DVI. Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?
I'm running XP.

Restarted my comp. Now the external monitor doesnt detect my mac

I have an older powerbook. Bought it from a friend. The Lcd screen has never worked. So Ive mirrored it and used monitors. I recently restarted my computer and when it was booting , the lcd screen flashed, as usual , and the ext. monitor went blank , as usual. then a floating bow on the motior said "Nothing detected" I unplugged the cord. Plugged back in , restarted comp. turned off monitor. and still nothing. I then Brought it to a friends and hooked it up to his monitor and got the same thing. I cant see anything so I cant even log in to change any settings. The cord is fine. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?

Reboot your Mac. When it gets to the point where you think the login screen should appear, press the F7 key. That key has two little windows on it and it's used to switch the display back and forth from the LCD to an external monitor.
I had similar issues back when my 1Ghz PB had a bad screen. That's how I found out about this key.

I am interested to find out which of toshiba laptop's currently on offer do support 2 external monitors simultaneously (one as normal and second as extended dekstop in windows). and in the troubelshouting part I did found this:
Cannot display information to a

Check that the cables connecting the monitors are firmly attached on
both ends. Some computer models do not support output to DVI and RGB
monitors simultaneously. Check the documentation for your computer
model.
But even if you find on http://www.csd.toshiba.com the pdf's of detailed spec's and user guides, there is no information about if they do support simultant output to monitors or not and what is the maximum resolution supported for this.

Toshiba Dynadock did not have really good reviews and it is working via USB which would be quite slow for all the traffic needed to show the graphic information for two monitors at 1280x1024.

is talking about about 'm9 ... to display to two external monitors which works well' so I thought must be possible. I know HP, Dell and Lenovo laptop's are able to do it so why not toshiba?

T430s 2352CTO 2 external monitors and laptop's LCD - is it possible?

I'm new to this forum, actually this is my first post, but I've been reading it for a while. I searched and searched and read till I'm blue in my face plus ran bunch of experiments and still can't figure out the issue.
this article clearly states it is possible to run triple display setup (assuming 1 of them is laptop's LCD) and 2 others are on Display Ports. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074304
But in my experience it is impossible.
I have 2 identical ViewSonic monitors (VG2236) connected to a Mini Dock Plus (433815U) via Display Port to DVI cables. In this configuration I can only use these two monitors or one of them in conjunction with laptop's LCD.
Windows display utility recognises all three displays but will shut the third one down if I try to extend the desktop to more than 2.
Please confirm that this configuration is possible or what am I doing wrong.
I really need to be able to use laptop's LCD and 2 external dispays for my work, that's the reason I bought the i7 version with descrete graphics

You'll want to make sure you have all of the most recent drivers and BIOS updates installed.

Macbook pro's doesn't send display to LCD or external monitor

Hi,
A few weeks back my macbook pro stopped sending output to LCD or external monitor and local apple support guys said that it had a problem in its logic board that needed to be replaced. Since my notebook was long out of warranty and the new logic board would have cost a lot, I just dumped it to my stack of broken hardware.
A few days back I was going through my old hardware and out of sheer curiosity I tried to turn it (the macbook pro) on. Voila! it did turn on however the poor thing complained about HDD being corrupt (I verified it by starting it in single user mode, otherwise it would immediately restart after displaying apple logo). I had the operating system formatted and reinstalled by the support guys.
Last night It stopped talking to display devices again and has been that way since then. Is there any hope for it or should I just scrape the poor thing? It would really break my heart since it works fine otherwise, I can log into it through VNC (I always keep a copy of VNC server on my machines) and it seems to work fine.

Your "A1226" "santa Rosa model MBP is one of the models which suffers from a well known problem with the Nvidia 8600 GPU.
Apple have an extended repair program which involves the free replacement of the logic board of this computer if tests establish that it suffers from this issue.
Your symptoms sound very like those which the NVidia GPU issue produces (I've suffered it myself).
I'm not sure where you are based, or how long ago you took your computer in (perhaps it was before the extended repair program was instituted? ) but I think you should pursue the possibility that you may be eligible for it. There is a very good chance that you are and that your logic board will be replaced free of charge. See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 for further details.

Broken LCD, External Monitor, Boot Camp

I have a 13 in white MacBook with Intel GMA X3100 GPU
Screen broke, I bought a Dell external monitor.
I used option+F2 to get it working, fine.
Now I want to use Windows XP in bootcamp. I can boot easily to windows, and the external monitor shows the windows startup screen, but when startup finishes, the monitor goes blank.
I think I found a fix: change something in control panel, but I can't see it (broken lcd). Also, I'm not aware of a new X3100 driver.
So, is there another trick, or a key board short cut (remember macbook keyboard)? That's the dillemma.

How about trying:
Macbook connected to power adapter, external display, keyboard and mouse (USB = best)
Turn macbook on and close display immediately after activating power button, On USB keyboard, hold D for diagnostic boot.
This should work, assuming the AHT disc is already in the optical drive (if your optical drive is broken, try an external optic drive)
